When I was 8 we moved from Cali to the twin cities we listened to this song a lot it will always hold a special place for me.
I love this song for its stereo separation. There is one mama and one papa on each channel. No mixing. Years ago I installed one speaker in the bushes at the two corners of my sister-in-law's pool. We sit at a midpoint and drink wine late into the night. You can't tell where the music is coming from. Then this song comes on and it makes you LOL with singers at each end of the pool. Lots of songs from that era are unmixed as stereo was new. I have a Mamas and the Pandora station just for this.
Did anyone else have like five remixes of this in the 90's? This song seemed to get the trance treatment a lot.
Young Michelle Phillips though <3
Papa John Philips. Horrible person.
Couple of days ago, someone posted video of Animals -Rising sun, and in the same youtube playlist it got this song too. And so many more amazing tunes. My favorite playlist now.
A high school friend's mom had been friends with Cass Elliot before Cass croaked. The pictures of them together were some of that lady's most prized possessions. My friend kept telling her "mom you could sell some of those..." but "never" was always the answer. I don't blame her.
Because they weren't credited on albums back then, a lot of people don't realize that The Mamas & The Papas (along with plenty of other bands like The Beach Boys) didn't record their own music- it was all done by The Wrecking Crew or a similar group of studio musicians and then the group learned it later!
Check out The Wrecking Crew on Netflix if you get a chance, wicked good watch!
Bobby Womack slays this song
