cleaning a ship's Hall is removing dirt and marine life from the ship's ecosystem without damaging the hull lining cleaning the bottom of the boat can be done in and out of the water the hull isn't the only thing that needs cleaning the propeller shaft running gear and intake track must also be cleaned and maintained if not addressed violations can become a real obstacle forly known as bof falling ship fouling is the accumulation of marine life on the hull a buildup of barnacles and Aquatic Life can cause a boat to slow down drastically the engine to overheat and a blocked intake all of which result in excessive fuel consumption and damage many of us have an inex explicable attraction to the underwater parts of a ship we rarely get to see them but we always know that huge menacing propellers lurk just beneath the surface like sea monsters While most of us will never go near one for some the submerged Hall of a ship is a daily workplace let's look at the first thing a diver does when under the hull of a ship underwater ship repair repair is a precise job that begins with an indication of a problem this indication can be a certain sound or vibration for example telling us that there is something wrong with the propeller as one of the most expensive and necessary parts of a ship any damage to the propeller must be discovered and repaired immediately after analyzing the damage the next step is a thorough underwater inspection the inspection is followed by writing a complete damage report explaining the exact location and extent of the damage that occurred we also often ask why our repairs underwater and not dry dock but let's find the answer getting a ship into a dry dock can be very expensive and timec consuming the ship had to be dismantled taken to dry dock repaired and then refloated if a dry dock is not currently available there is additional waiting time before work can begin these lengthy procedures take up valuable time from a ship's sailing schedule costing shipping company's money at the same time if the ship suffers obvious damage it is very important to repair it as soon as possible for example a damage propeller can cause vibration secondary cavitation and additional load on the engine all of which ultimately result in increased fuel consumption even a bend in just one blade can cause an imbalance in the pressure Distribution on the propeller causing excessive load on the engine that is why underwater ship repair in most cases is optimal this is a cost effective method that allows ships to continue loading operations in Port so they can Sail On Time underwater repairs are critical because even if the damage doesn't have any impact on your boat at the time it can produce so much secondary cavitation in your Rudder later that the cost of repairing the initial damage is only a fraction costs you will incur later in the dry dock what underwater repair methods are there the method used depends on the type of damage found sometimes divers indicate cracks burs and scratches on the propeller caused by the impact of sand or foreign objects in the water sometimes the entire blade is bent or parts are missing depending on the hydrodynamic properties of the propeller some some of this damage can often be repaired using hydrodynamic reshaping one method is straightening for example if a propeller has bent blades divers can set them in the water using a cold static load press which can range from 50 tons to 250 [Music] tons in cases like this straightening is no longer an option workers weld the missing parts to correct the imbalance if they don't have time to weld a new tip or blade they can do the cutting if it has a controllable propeller workers remove the entire blade and repair it metallurgically on land if time permits other times workers removed the entire propeller while the ship was in the water repaired it in a repair shop and then reinstalled it in addition to propeller and Thruster repairs they can also perform underwater metallurgical welding and ship Hull repairs they had to install special Coffer dams around the damaged Hull plating providing a dry environment and then they cut out the damaged armor plating and replaced it with new ones there are different Coffer dams to suit different types of ship Halls what is the most difficult part about working underwater compared to working on land for starters working underwater near large floating machines is a potentially deadly environment working in such an environment requires a high level of discipline endurance and concentration another challenging thing is that the work they do is usually done during cargo operations at the Port where many different factors have to be considered dealing with agents and Port Authorities weather conditions getting the right technician to be present at the right time and place changing ship schedules plan and adjust their schedule what safety procedures are implemented when divers work on ships they have quality assurance and special Health procedures first and foremost safety starts with oneself and a common goal sh prepars are never worth a person's life secondly the whole thing is a very procedural job so there are a lot of safety regulations on the plane and also in the house that are implemented and they adhere to them strictly in addition diving is a highly regulated job and before they can become divers they have to pass a diving course worth 50,000 a year what does it take to be a successful Ship Repair diver this is not not a simple job but difficult to which they have to devote a lot of time to perform well they need to be very fit both mentally and physically sometimes they are called on an urgent job in the middle of the night and they have to be prepared to leave bed run outside and do what needs to be done some of their operations took up to 40 hours without a break and they had to finish them on time because the ship had to leave they have both male and female divers all of whom perform very well in their jobs to be successful you have to be passionate and put your heart into it to succeed you should never take any job for granted
