patreon itch twitter instagram pity me now yo guys i came across something ultra fascinating and marks the end of modern gaming as we know it but it's so subtle that if you blink you'll miss it so i need to build up to it before i can show it to you so super mario 64. stick with me i promise this is going somewhere interesting a legendary game in its own right the aesthetic jiggy the controls fluid but the camera absolutely rancid that thing is stinky man some say that the boss of this game is the big bowser as usual but oh no no no the real boss is this camera oh my god say you want to turn around right the camera goes huh what what you say you see you wanna do what turner who okay fine it's about as difficult as trying to get your girlfriend to pick a place to eat and the camera issues extend far beyond this as well what i don't understand is why nintendo would ever make a camera like this in the first place like how could nintendo play this game before releasing it and think yes this camera system is quality enough for our brand new console's launch title it just don't make any sense to me man now of course i'm putting on a bit of an act because it's obvious to me that super mario 64 was one of the first 3d platforming games ever to be made and you can easily tell by the promos made for this [Music] it was at the very forefront of a new era in gaming all the years prior to this the gaming industry was perfecting what it meant to make 2d home console games and the era before that was perfecting what it meant to make arcade games both had era transitions that came with their own learning curves now naturally no one had any idea on the best way to do many things in 3d at the beginning but the biggest unknown was arguably controlling a camera in 3d space and so nintendo just did the best r d that they could for super mario 64. and believe it or not back in those days questioning if this camera was good or not just was not a thing that happened because there was practically nothing else to compare it to you either take playing this incredibly revolutionary 3d game with mario or you leave it and so what you get is problems caused by the overlap of an old era blending in with anew but of course today we now have a very strong idea on how cameras generally should work in 3d thanks to the contributions from the entire industry over many years and so why do i tell you all this right well although the gaming industry has grown to be so big that it's kind of fractured into many different eras at this point we recently just entered a new more traditional type of gaming era what i like to call the compute era where our capacity to compute has advanced so much that we can do some pretty crazy stuff in real time now okay sure it may not be as exciting as the blend in between arcade and home consoles or 2d to 3d but it does have its nuance and this is what i've been building up to take a look at this image let me know if you see anything that you shouldn't be seeing pause the video if you want more time to try and find the answer on your own but if you look in the background some of the npcs are a-posing and spawning into the game from the reflection we the gamers should not be able to see this you see game development is a lot like disney world they both share the common goal of tricking you into believing that things are more than they appear so that they can maximize your immersion while interacting with their world but if you were to catch a disney mascot without their mask on for example all of a sudden it becomes pretty difficult to see minnie mouse walking around the park instead of the truth cassandra i know you're in there i just watched you eat a corn dog with sauerkraut on your lunch break who do you think you're fooling so then what's going on here because i mean the 2020 spider-man game is a very polished project by industry veterans how could something like this happen well i'll tell you you see throughout the last gaming era the reflections used were always cheap tricks because simply put using a true reflection would make it way too hard for most games to keep the frame rate high and it just wasn't worth it for most games but in our new compute gaming era developers are practically getting realistically calculated reflections for free for free which completely goes against how games have been refined up into this point traditionally a video game will just check which direction the camera is facing and then check what is and isn't in view of the camera and then just do all the smoke and mirror illusion stuff outside of the camera's view all of this helps the world feel alive and lived in but because this game wasn't designed with this newfound power to render reflections in mind you get these weird uncanny moments like this as an old era begins to blend with the new again it's not the biggest deal i don't think most people really care about this until we're looking back in retrospect because just like the super mario 64 camera scenario right now we're just excited for the advancement however i personally think it's incredibly fascinating to be able to witness this blind in real time you know what i mean look just have a peek at this clip for example you can see as spider-man runs up the building npcs all over the place are disappearing houdini right here houdini right there another houdini here's a bunch of houdinis in fact thanks to this reflection i can tell you with certainty that if the camera can't see the npcs they simply just stop moving altogether i mean look the proof is in the pudding which makes the game feel a lot less like a living breathing world and more like a world that centers around you the player it's that damn blind i tell you for the last 30 years doing whatever you want with npcs when the camera can't see was the perfect solution because this is what you're expected to see while it happens but not anymore hell not even just random car reflections are safe anymore it's unclear to me where this error will lead and the problems and solutions that will follow especially with unreal engine promising practically unlimited polygons for real-time games it is insane to me that that is where video games are at now but look i'm pretty sure this era is here to stay it's exciting it's ambitious but it's also about damn time now i'm hungry and i'm off to go eat some french beignets i'll see you at the rest
