it's kind of hilarious that back when this trailer came out a pretty popular theory was that Joel was a ghost here. so many people (including myself) thought that was ridiculous.
Agreed, if you want to take apart and decipher the trailers pre-release then thatβs on you, but going into something more or less blind and just letting the game take over you is a much more satisfying experience than trying to work it all out before playing it ya feel
P.s. this trailer is so fuckin good
I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
And I fear no evil because I'm blind to it all
And my mind and my gun they comfort me
Because I know I'll kill my enemies when they come
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell on this earth forever more
Said, I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul
But I can't walk on the path of the right because I'm wrong
It irks me when people constantly complain that games give too much away in their trailers and promotional material and then turn around and claim the game was false advertised because Joel didnt show up in the parts they showed.
I just feel like the first playthrough is something Naughty Dog really wants to preserve. They want you going in with as blank of a slate as possible and if they show legit cutscenes and story beats that cheapens those moments.
(And they didnt lie*. Joel shows up a good bit in the game and you get a suprising amount of him and Ellie together dispite his death. Just because it didnt happen in the way you wanted doesnt mean it didnt happen.)
*Edit: this is to counteract the false advertisement argument that "Joel's barely in the game, they didnt make him or his death important, ect." He is un the game, you go through sequences with him as Ellie and him dying/his decision from the first game hugely impact the story. Hes arguably still one of if not the most important character.
Through the Valley was great. Crooked Still teaser was great. The forest teaser was great too, although why the fuck does Emily have an avatar if she was like in the game for 10 seconds?
Whatβs not great was literally replacing Jesse for Joel. Thatβs outright lying.
He said "you really gonna go through with this?" Implying the revenge for his death. He knew she didn't completely have it in her, which is why he asked. She replied with complete confidence that she could. But when she finally got to Abby, she just couldn't. Joel here (to me) is basically still being the parent to her that knows it's not a good idea. But he can't do anything to stop her.
Movies do it all the time, edited and deleted scenes etc.
I don't mind how something is advertised if it protects the experience, as long as what we get is good...and what we got was absolutely amazing.
That is so true. All the trailers were great and did a great job at hiding the "twists". It really reminded me of the whole Metal Gear Solid 2 thing. It's just a shame the leaks ruined that for a lot of people.
I think they did a great job, I hate it when trailers spoils too much (I'll use the Spiderman movies example again).
The best thing about the reveals is the gameplay, I remember how many people were saying it was fake and 100% scripted, no way they'd name all the NPCs... Yet the game delivered.
So in the end, they gave us what they promised us, while protecting the story.
