(upbeat music) (plane engine roaring) - [Sam] The Landor Livery has been saved and now all the other retro BA-747 livery. (upbeat music) - This is our new toy, this is Negus. - [Sam] I'll take one too. - There we go. We have one there for you. - [Male Voice] One for me, Yes. Wow! - [Sam] Controller just gave us a hint, I think that the 747 is about to take off from Cardiff. - [Male Voice] Oh, here. - It's going to be difficult for them to land in these conditions. (suspenseful music)(loud applause) (plane screeching) - [Sam] That was the best landing I've seen on the 747 was stunning. (dramatic music) - Off, that's the aircraft shut down. (car doors close) - [Sam] All right. - All right. Where are we off to Sam? - So, let's go to the first stop today which is called Dunsfold Aerodrome. - Dunsfold in Surrey. - We're going to see the BA Landor 747. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Yeah, we just got here at Dunsfold. This is cool. This is first time I am driving on the runway. Look, I'm following the car and driving on the runway and look what's ahead of us. It's the BA 747 Landor livery. (upbeat music) - [Sam] A very typical winter, very drizzly. I'm really glad to see the Landor livery has been safe among all the retro BA 747 Livery. There's been a campaign to save the Landor because it's just so great and grand. - Wonderful aircraft. City of Swansea. Came in on runway 07. Before it landed, he did a fly past and then he came round and did quite a steep right hand turn and put the plane down so softly. It was a beautiful landing. It was really under the pilot off who said how pleased he was with landing. Stopped very quickly. (upbeat music) (plane tyres screeching) - [Male Voice] It was absolutely amazing. It's a quite an iconic colour scheme. It's many at time I've seen this plane at Heathrow, many a time. It's a beautiful aircraft. It's such a shame though, they're going to to be extinct before we know it. - [Sam] It's always incredible standing underneath the 747 and my head just about clear the underneath belly height here and look at its main gears. This aeroplane flew with British airways over 20 years. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Sam, we're going to take you up to the cockpit of November Lima Yankee now. Let's go ahead. (upbeat music) - One last time incredible, walking off the stairs here. Wow! - Welcome aboard. - Here is the staircase. - [Sam] Oh my God. Coming up. - [Male Voice] How does it feel waling up one of those? - [Sam] It feels such a long time since I've flown the 747. (sighs) Oh, look at that. Look at the cabin. (Upbeat Music) (Upbeat Music) - I'm really going to miss this the most exclusive cabin in the sky, the upper deck of the British Airways Jumbo, JFK to Heathrow, said at least seven of these every night. I mean one every 45 minutes uh on the red eye. - [Male Voice] Care we asked, how much preparation work had to be done last few days? - It's been quite involved. We've changed all four RV211 engines in five days and the engines that have come off are going and the engines put on or for static display purposes. - [Male Voice] And the interior will be kept as well with the seats in business class in the economy like that? - [Flight Attendant] Yeah, that's right. Yeah. She's going to be preserved as is. So the reason this 400 is in particular special to preserve is because she wore the original Land or Livery that she was delivered with in the early nineties. So we're really pleased to see that she's been preserved. (upbeat music) - [Sam] That was a great tour inside the land or British airways 747. Well, now I'm going to continue to go to Cotswolds Airport to see the next 747. Look at this, with just drove past the wing. (Upbeat Music) - [Sam] So we just entered Cotswolds Airport, where the next BA747 is and look at it as getting really dark outside and in the middle of woods and there will be a 747 in front of us soon. (upbeat music) - Hi, well welcome to Cotswolds Well, my name is Susannah Harvey I'm the CEO here and this is our new toy, this is Negus. This is one of the last BA747 that left Heathrow Airport on the eighth of October. (upbeat music plays) (plane engine roaring) (plane engine roaring) - Hey Sam, can you notice something about the logo up here? - [Sam] Yeah? - A is in fact is in a lower case, - [Sam] Right it's a lower case but this is originally what it has been, right? - [Susannah] Yeah. And then it changed when it went to the next Livery. - [Male Voice] Suzanne's right, um in fact, this is the first livery for British airways which was created in 1974 by the merge of BOAC and BEA. The logo for BOAC was this classic speed bird and I think in the merger, BOAC was the senior partner which is why the speed bird logo actually survived the merger and appears right there on the nose. I think partly the insistence of the BOAC captains who just couldn't be parted from their beloved speed bird. (upbeat music) - [Susannah] Three of the the engine cannons have a slightly different paint scheme on them. So this engine behind me is one of the original engines that was on the aircraft. Three of the others were removed and were replaced with end-of-life ones. And you'll notice that the original one is completely grey all over and the new ones you can see it goes blue, grey, blue So that's one thing that we need to do is is get these re-sprayed So they're all in the correct paint scheme and she looks same absolute typical conditions. (uplifting music) (laughs) - [Sam] I don't know how to open the door either. - Yes. - It doesn't rotate. - Yeah. - Hold on. Ooh! It's coming. - Giant effort. - Yeah! (Suzanne laughs) - Okay. - We did it, well done! - Turns out It's quite heavy, but this is my first time. And maybe last time ever turn on at 747 door. - Yeah but mind the gap. And I'm afraid we haven't... - [Sam] Okay, coming up. - actually got any power on at the moment. So it's a bit dark, but come and have a look. - [Sam] Oh, it is dark. (both laughing) - [Sam] Ghost house here. Oh my God! - I'll tell you what we'll use some of these are quite handy. - [Sam] All right, - There we go. - [Sam] I'll take one too. - We have one more for you - [Sam] One for me. - Yes. And then... - [Sam] um okay. Wow! This is actually quite scary. Imagine, spend a whole night inside a 747 here. (he laughs) Look, there's some sections of some four seats has been removed, right at the economy here. Oh, this section seats have removed here. - [Susannah] All of these are actually for sale on eBay. At the moment, It's about a third of them that have sold and the money is going to be going back in towards her preservation costs. Every year we actually run a scholarship programme and we take on 10 kids and put them through about five hours of flight training. So any profits that are left over beyond her costs of preserving her and keeping her one piece we're putting back into our scholarship programme. So hopefully we will be able to put like two or three kids through their PPL every year, which is great. So yeah. - [Sam] So quiet here, isn't it? Susannah, thank you so much showing me the British airways livery 747. - Oh you're most welcome. And we can't wait to see everyone come and visit her here. - Absolutely and follow @suziejet. That's her name on Instagram. (Susannah laughs) (Intense music) (up-beat tempo music) (up-beat tempo music) - Today is the day at Cardiff and not only me there's lots of aviation fans came out to see the 747 departure. - [Male Voice] Are you going to miss the 747 because today this one will be the last one? - I mean, How can you get more iconic than that? Let's be fair but definitely, I think for all of us, I think I speak for all of us. We will definitely miss her a lot. - I have a little young fan here, Hunter and Xavier and their whole family came out and actually Hunter can speak Cantonese. (Hunter speaks in foreign language) - Remember everything you saw today, okay? - Okay. - Yeah it will go down to the history book today the big day today. So we just had some movement. Now, the 747 has been pulled out behind that wall. Now we can see the cold. We can see the whole plane. (upbeat music plays) - I'm going to go over this thing up and wait for this plane's landing. Okay? - Okay. - All right. And have a great Christmas ahead. - Okay. You too. Bye-bye. (uplifting music plays) - So we just arrived at St Athan airport standing on a tower here you can actually see Cardiff airport from a distance. You can see a blue tail, that's the 747 actually. So we're this close this got to be the shortest 747 ferry flight ever; four miles distance. - I'm Tara, I'm one of the photographers today for this amazing event. And I just want to say that that blue sky over there you can see behind me. I actually ordered that for all the photographers. - So the controller just gave us a hand I think that the 747 is about to take off from Cardiff. (plane engine roaring) - [Sam] Oh yeah. (camera shutters) (Audience chattering) - [Female Voice] There she goes. (excited chatter) (plane engine roaring) (Camera shutters) (plane engine roars) (Camera shutters) - [Sam] 747 took off. And now just went into the clouds. I see the visibility dropping, you think the plane's going to make it? - The navigation aids here at St Athan are fairly basic which means that the pilots need a fairly high cloud base to get in right now with this weather passing through it's going to be difficult for them to land in these conditions. So maybe they're grateful for a couple of extra minutes to fly around. - [Male Voice] She got airborne one 80 out downwind and now 3000 feet at 130 knots. So she's, she's low and slow. Probably just skirting under the weather actually. (nostalgic music playing) (nostalgic music playing) (camera shutters) (nostalgic music playing) (nostalgic music playing) (nostalgic music playing) (nostalgic music playing) (nostalgic music playing) (audience excitedly cheering) (plane engines roar) (plane engines roar to stop) - My God! That was the best landing I've seen on the 747 was stunning. I'm having tears coming out, so emotional! (intense music playing) (intense music playing) (intense music playing) - 16 wheels on a 747 breaking heart, that was a show, that was amazing landing. - [computer animated Voice] 30, 20, 10... (instrument panel whirling) - [Sam] And then winter also cooperated on the final landing. And now the 747 is shutting down his engine and it's now toll to this resting place here. - [Pilot] Okay, so we are here in St Athan on the runway just about to shut it down for the last time. So Di is going to be doing that. (plane engine roaring drowns out the speaker) (inaudible dialogue) (levers click) (inaudible dialogue) - All right, so Yankee Dot Charlie. Thank you very much. - [Diane] Who knows... (levers click) - [Diane] Last one. (lever clicks) (plane engine roars) (upbeat music plays) - [Flight Attendant] Door's just open, I can't wait to get back onto smelly because she's homey. - We miss the airplane's smell (both laughing) (cheerful music plays) - Well now I'm one of the first to go inside of BOAC 747 together we're going to power off the aeroplane with the crew. This is the aeroplane smell we missed. This is the stairs we missed boarding on the 747. - [Sam] How did you split up your work today? Because everyone would want to have that final landing. - So we all played a really important part. Everyone had their role to play, but when it came to flying the aircraft on this occasion Diane and myself flew it. So I completed the takeoff out of Cardiff, I handed over control to Di, who flew a fantastic approach and lined us up in exactly the right place. And I took control back to do the last final part, which was to land it here In St Athan. - How long was the landing role you had like today like? - Good question. - Yeah. - Do you think we stopped in about 1500 metres, 1400 metres. - [Sam] World's shortest 747 flight today! - Quite possibly it was a flight time Di, it was? - 17 minutes. - There you go. So it was a short flight. I don't know if it was the shortest but we made sure we had enough time to do what we needed to do to safely put it down here in St Athan. - The 747 is just a wonderful aircraft. It's been an honour to fly it. We're delighted that this aircraft is going to be a museum piece. So for years to come people can come and visit, have a look around even if they've never had a chance to actually fly it or fly in it, they'll still be able to see it. - It's a bittersweet moment It's very emotional, but we are very pleased as a crew and as a community that this aircraft in particular the BOAC livery will become a museum to inspire future generations. - I brought this from my, my aviation collection. It's a real museum piece over 50 years old. - Wow! Look at that! - Stunning! - There's a predelivery painting of a BOAC 747-100 it's 50 years old. And I was just leaving the house. It's part of my collection. I just grabbed it off the wall and brought it with me. - Okay. So we'll switch off to the IRS mode selectors, the emergency exit lights set off, Off cargo heater was off, we had nothing in there today. Air conditioning packs to off. And finally we'll switch off the APU. Now finally, the battery switch off. That's the aircraft shut down. This particular aircraft has flown with us for 21 years. - I guess we're we're, we're all emotional because it is literally that last flight. It's it's a moment we've spent years flying these aircraft as we just said, it's unique view from the pilot seat, up there sitting of nine metres up is incredible. When you see a 747 there's people say, you know they can see a little piece of, of Britain when they come and see the tail fin and the aero plane cause it's you just stands out. Isn't it? It's so iconic. (plane engine roars) (Pilot laughs) (upbeat music playing) (upbeat music playing) - The wonderful story on the 747 continue dispatcher, Scott? - That's it. - Just proposed to her, his friend Phillipa on the 747 here in the galley! - So I'm supposed to be at work, obviously I'm not. And I followed Phillipa here today, She had no idea that I was going to be here and obviously waited for the right time and come up under and proposed on the aircraft. - He's amazing! - Well it's memorable thing. - Show us the ring. Beautiful! Congratulations! Here's the moment. (audience applauding) (cheerful music) - [Sam] Are we all invited to our wedding? - Yes, of course. - [Sam] Yay! - You need to invite a 747 as well! (laughter) - The reason why I've chosen to do it on the 747 is because Philippa's grandfather was one of the crew for the first VA 747 commercial flights. And then her father has flown for 44 years on the type, as well as her uncle who was also a flight engineer on the classics. And then later on a flight engineer on Concord. So it's in Philippa's family, it's in her blood British airways and especially the aircraft. So that's the reason why I've chosen to... - [Sam] Fantastic! fantastic stories. - We've got these tags that we're giving away today from Victor Papa. - [Sam] Wow. - Which was the transatlantic record breaking now. - Yeah. This is the metal tag from CIVP. - Yeah. - Wow! (upbeat music playing) - [Sam] Wow. - [Female Attendant] I need one more. - [Sam] Wow, That was great. - Only just realised who you were when you took your mask off. - [Sam] Oh my God! - And I was standing on the stairs. I then recognised you. - [Sam] Really? - And I went, Oh my God! It's that man that my daughter has been following all these years. - [Sam] It's the aeroplane freak - It's the aeroplane freak. - It's an end of an era, end of the chapter 16 years of my career flying British airways, several, several hundreds. And now we say good night. So thank you, Queen of the Skies, it's been a blast. (sombre music plays) - It's been a really emotional day. Hugely iconic aircraft. We are so going to miss her. We've all loved flying her, it's been an absolute deliberate privilege and a very special thing for us to do and what a way to finish today. Absolutely amazing! (Uplifting music) - What a great day, bittersweet day but great memories forever I will keep it in my heart. Thank you 747, Queen of the Sky.
