The Kavalier Discusses: Best Online Shoe Brands Under $200 | Are DTC Brands Worth It?

[Music] hey guys and welcome back to another episode of trending Heath today we're excited because we have with us John Shanahan from the cavalier John appreciate you being with us absolutely I cover a lot of things on my channel from the smallest like clothing startups and shoe brands and basically if you want to go from buying like Johnson and Murphy or a cold shoe to something a little bit nicer I'm trying to explore the space where I'm not getting into full luxury but really that kind of sweet spot of like really high quality but great values what the questions that I think a lot of people are looking for new years and the whole kind of new direct consumer is coming about how do you feel that the direct consumer movement has really added to the variety what's really interesting is a lot of brains come out now and they say that they're like cutting out the middleman they seem like we're coming here we're delivering cutting out the middleman and that is true to a degree like the traditional path was you build a shoe to sell it to the North Shore Dillard's or Barneys and then you sell the consumer and there was markup in each of those things but we're what I see today is there's a brand that will come out and that will build a shoe they will then go to a manufacturer that's already making shoes for another major brand and then those kind of buy extra time on the line to design their shoes and buy from there so there's still there's still a middleman in there but it's not the the retailer and there's not as much markup and that sort of thing but what we're getting are these cool brands that are designing shoes that part really truly available like if you wanted to get a Chelsea boot you know you had to go to like East Saint Laurent or somebody Adam Barney's it was a really high-end but now you're giving up a brand liked after knee solo or you know XY is the other brand Thursday boots that does a Chelsea boot at $200 there so the fact that you're getting these shoes that previously were not available or very expensive all of that's now coming down and you're getting like with Thursday booty are you getting a good your wall to chew of $200 which just didn't exist ten years ago and so that's it's changed that a lot but there's also things like like with Thursday boots it's like they will position themselves as a lemons quality but they're not quite in there and so you have to get to kind of watch out and that's what I really try explore my channel is like is a company that's saying that they are making a you know hundred dollar sweater and delivering 450 is that what they're getting to and there is some of that out there where it's not but then in more cases than not you know like Thursday's are a good value because that great construction and great leather that sort of thing and so that's really how it's changed introducing these new styles that were previously much more expensive but bringing the price down while also still delivering a higher level quality then the $80 you know Church DSW issues yeah one of the questions that we get a lot from customers that come into our store every day is only have a certain amount of money to spend they come in with you know the most of the retail brands that you see some of them are good a lot of mohkumat them are bad but let's say you know you get a guy comes in to say dollars what what would be your recommendations for maybe the best dress you as well as maybe the best sneaker that you've seen out there for the dirt consumer for uh well I think it's whether you're looking at direct consumer or even you know the gap makes sneakers and that sort of thing it's like if you're looking for great dress shoes and you have a fixed or a lower budget I think the the breaking point where you start to get you know good construction in good leathers is about $150 it's like 150 is your your base point $200 is basically we're gonna really start to get into good stuff like Beckett Simenon for you can depending on when they run their sales they actually make their shoes to order in small batches and then deliver them three months later so you wait but you're only spending $150 a lot of times and they have great casting leather they do Blake sticks construction leather soles and that's probably the best you're gonna get at that lower price point when you get into $200 Mirman is often recited they make a good year well they actually they make their GU your weld in China and they finish it in Spain and so there's like that's the way they get the cost down and but I haven't found I found there yeah but with Mirman you're getting what you pay for in that respect but I think if you're looking at about $200 Thursday shoes they have a 360 degree well they have nice stuff and that's when you start to get into like okay then above 200 you start to look for Allen Edmonds on sale or the factory seconds that sort of thing I'm also finding you know if you get into 250 that's when you can really start to find shirts over the other stuff but yeah like Peggy's Simenon for the lowest price dress shoes while still being good quality I also found the Lake McKay is another one but you have to watch out like Blake McKay does a really nice shoe for like 175 190 but they also sell them at DSW and the DSW ones are cemented not a stitch like on their website and so that's so you definitely have to watch that because it does like yeah and then as far as sneakers like there's a there's a renaissance right now and sneakers obviously with like Nike and big brands but I've what I've really found is the sub sub-genre I'm like minimalist sneakers where before he had coming projects with $400 and you had to get those but then at the same time that 400 other shoe what you were paying for was casting another Italian construction nice sole but now there's brands that are coming out that are saying like here's a $200 shoe with the same characteristics of a common project and the excellent choices within there is like greats come in at 179 I believe and they're mean Italy calfskin leather and those are shoes in the last for 10 years don't care them and those are shoes that are leather lines so it's like you put a shoe tree in there and get really nice form you the moisture out in those lasts for a long time so it's like greats there's a company crown out of Northampton England they make all their shoes in Northampton England they have really nice leather so a really nice soles extremely comfortable back in seminar I'm wearing the trainers right now and those come in I think 150 and those are made to order that sort of thing and then MGM eye is another really good one and then MGM is a great example of where they talk about cutting out the middleman but a lot of these small brands are actually like microscopic in comparison to some of the big ones and they're not always they don't own the factories it's like they're still kind of the middleman which is interesting but but without enmons it's like that's probably the biggest brand that people discuss on the internet and say like is this you know their quality is going down or you know they've changed a lot and they have which is interesting but they're still making considerably more shoes than all of the nita see brands combined and I think that's what's most interesting now it's a C like we have a lemons here and Thursday boots shoes but there's still a lot of value being delivered from a lemons like a shoe made in the USA with longtime craftsmen and what was most interesting to hear from you guys is that while you will get anything around shoe or a Louboutin shoe it's like those shoes are way more expensive than elements but they're not merely it was good yeah that's a fact I mean I can't tell you how many designer shoes come in here and customers think that they got a great deal on these shoes and they're gonna last forever and they paid a thousand dollars for these you know you still are on Chelsea boots and it was completely glued together so yeah again just because it's high price point like that doesn't make spring shoes again John thanks for being
