as we worship and a special happy father's day to all of our dads this morning we just pray that you feel loved and encouraged and blessed today let's worship together this morning i saw [Music] is lord that in all of our days we can praise you god we thank you father for who you are and what it is that you do and have done for each and every single one of us father god i just pray this morning lord that as we continue to worship you as we continue to sing your praises this morning father us pastor steve comes up lord to give us a message this morning father i just pray that you would move this morning lord lord that we would be here and we would be available to hear what it is that you have to speak to each and every single one of us this morning father father i just pray lord that anything that could be preventing us from worshiping you today god will just be left at the foot of your cross god and that your glory and power would reign through father we love you we thank you for this place we thank you that we live somewhere where we can worship you freely god and i just pray that we would continue to do that this morning lord i just lift every single person in this building into your hands this morning and every single person joining us online today father just move this morning god in ways that we know you can [Music] amen turn your eyes upon [Music] jesus face and the [Music] hey it's me again it's mark your pastor of youth and young adults there are so many exciting opportunities that i had to come back and let you know about a new one we've added a special graduation prayer service for our grade 8 and our grade 12 graduates it's on wednesday june 30th at 7 pm and we're asking all grade 8 and grade 12 graduates and their parents and their families to join us here at bbc in the main auditorium for graduation prayer service we'll be celebrating our graduates in a few ways but most importantly we'll be joining together in prayer to ask god's blessing on these students as they make these transitions out of elementary into high school out of high school into post-secondary education or work etc hey dress up bring your grandparents it's going to be a celebration i'm asking you to help in two simple ways first if you are a grade 8 or a grade 12 graduate hey please go to the church website click on the ministries tab and the junior high rooted or senior high starting line box and then scroll down to the jot form so you can sign up to come secondly as a larger church body you've heard me say many times that we can encourage these students who are in these grades would you contact tell them to contact me and to sign up and these students at bbc right now who call this church their home that's amazing but we also have families where students aren't part of the ministry yet it would really be a big help if you let them know and we could be celebrating them at this time hey church pastor josh here a few weeks ago pastor steve made an announcement about the deficit in our general fund we are so encouraged to see how we as a church have responded to the need and that we are now at 97 of our budget for this fiscal year and with two more weeks to go to reach our total goal it's amazing to see how our jehovah gyra god provides for the needs of his church we praise god for this provision and also thank you for responding to the leading of the holy spirit to give having said that i want to bring our mission fund to your attention our mission budget is in a deep deficit as well we have finished well in the last few years but this past year has been especially difficult now i understand that for most of us this pandemic has hit our finances hard and we are truly blessed to see our church's faithfulness in giving despite the difficulties but i'm here to ask your help with our mission budget by doing two things number one please pray pray that god would reverse this deficit and that we would even surpass our total goal for the year and number two if you are able i'm also asking us to reach deeper and to give in faith not as a replacement for our tithing towards a general fund but as a separate special offering in order to ensure that we continue to be effective in both our local and global initiatives and commitments if you give digitally make sure you select mission fund in the drop down window to designate your donation or write mission fund in the memo portion if you choose to give by check may we be obedient again as the holy spirit leads us to meet this need thank you and god bless i don't care how late you stay out stay out as late as you want you want to borrow the new car you want to borrow my credit card kids today they really have it rough i have no idea where we are or where we're going i mean when i was their age life was easy super easy why haven't you gotten a tattoo yet how come you don't have any piercings yet yep we're lost we are completely lost ew sports just do whatever the mechanic says to do vehicle maintenance is completely overrated look whatever the mechanic is asking just pay him pay him whatever he wants i wish they had soap operas at night i like that boy you should date him you should date him immediately well what about the creepy guy with a motorcycle he's cute yeah sure spring break in tahiti sounds fun hey make sure you get all your video games done before you start your homework you don't have to pass all your classes what you have a project due tomorrow and you've known about it for four weeks and you haven't started yet sweet doesn't anybody want to know if we're there yet remember if you need anything between midnight and 4 am please come wake me up hey i'm on the phone could you bring the baby over and let him climb all over me hey hey can you please turn that music up [Music] well we just stopped for lunch 10 minutes ago but yeah let's stop again i never have trouble with my toddler i never have trouble with my teenagers i never have trouble with my adult children you know she's right we are ruining her life yes more homework to correct all right whining yay tantrums hmm vomit we just really need to spoil these kids more sorry buddy i don't know any good jokes at all you're 16. you pretty much know everything now i think 18 is a great age to get married okay remember make sure you turn on all the lights before you first of all happy father's day everyone god bless you uh just to say that registration again was full for this morning so a couple of things number one please do not register if you don't plan on coming all right that should be self-explanatory but uh we have had a lot of people registering and not everyone's showing up so just to to squelch the myth you cannot scalp tickets outside the front door all right so don't register and come expecting to you know to you know scalp those tickets outside the door if you do register in all seriousness and you find out you know later in the week perhaps that you're not going to be able to make it please call into the church office and tell them you know there's five of us we're registered we're not coming please let someone else have that opportunity secondly if um if you tried to register for the service today and you're at home and you were not able to um we are praying about and we are open to the opportunity of starting another service if there are people that are wanting to come but are not able to come so if you were wanting to come this morning and you were not able to come this morning we would also ask that you just contact the church office and let them know let's bow our hearts and word of prayer heavenly father we're so grateful for this morning we're so grateful for every opportunity we have lord of coming together and worshiping you and just spending this time in your presence looking into your word father through your holy spirit will you come and will you speak to us and will you encourage us father in jesus name we do pray amen well again good morning everyone i i heard this story of this widow and every morning she would go out onto her front porch and she would hold her hands out and she would begin to pray and say lord you know that i don't have food to feed my family today lord you know i just don't have the resources i just don't have the money so lord i pray that you would once again provide for me and my children this day and she would stand out there on her front porch her arms raised praying this prayer over and over again now her neighbor was an atheist and her neighbor got tired of listening to her and so you know one day he thought you know i'm gonna i'm gonna prove my point i'm i'm gonna teach this widow a lesson and so he went out and he bought all these groceries for her and then brought them and put all these bags of groceries in front of her front door and then he rang the doorbell and he ran and hid in the bush and the widow came out and she saw all these groceries and immediately she just broke into praise she was saying thank you god thank you lord for once again providing thank you lord for your goodness and your mercy to me thank you lord and just then the atheist jumped out from behind the bush and he said ma'am that wasn't god that provided you those groceries today that was me i just wanted to prove to you that your prayers to a god who doesn't exist are meaningless and without skipping a beat the woman continued to pray she said lord i thank you for providing these groceries for me today and even getting the devil to pay for them we're continuing our series today on prayer we've looked at why we should pray and even what we should pray but today i want to focus on who it is that invites us to come the fact that it's god who tells us to come to him and to present our prayers and our requests i want you to turn with me in your bibles to jeremiah 33 verses 2 to 3. jeremiah 33 verses 2 to 3. it says this this is what the lord says he who made the earth the lord who formed it and established it the lord is his name call to me and i will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know from these verses we see three very important truths about prayer number one is the prompting the fact that god has invited us to call on him he invites us to come he invites each one of us this day call on me is that complicated no right that's not complicated that means in any situation in any place in any language just call out to god you don't have to be eloquent you don't have to be profound you don't have to come with some form of required wording or posture you simply call you simply call out to god you call to him when you're happy so that you can rejoice in his blessings you call to him when you're sad and you can find hope and comfort you call to him when you're convicted and you will find grace and mercy through the cross of jesus christ you call to him when you're depressed and you'll hear words of encouragement and words of support you call to him when your world is turned upside down and you will find that he is the god of the upside down kingdom you call to him when your burden is too heavy and you will know what it is to have the holy spirit come and carry you through it you call to him when your strength is gone and when your faith is weak and you will find that you are able to mount up on wings like eagles to run and not grow weary to walk and not faint these words of jeremiah it's important to understand the context it's important to understand the context in which god spoke these words to jeremiah jeremiah was called to be a prophet during the time of king josiah king josiah had been a good king during his reign he had led the nation of israel back to god however in 609 bc king josiah died and israel's future was very uncertain king nebuchadnezzar had come to power in babylon and his armies were marching against israel jerusalem was under siege the greatest army of its day was surrounding it and god had spoken to jeremiah and god had said jeremiah i'm going to take you and i'm going to take israel and i'm going to exile you i'm going to remove you from the land for 70 years and when jerusalem when jeremiah had had shared that king zedekiah had not taken very kindly to those words and he had had jeremiah locked up and there were people all around him that were threatening to kill him so so just just picture this okay you have this prophet surrounded by people who are wanting to kill him a prisoner under guard in a doomed city surrounded by a great army that was about to destroy it it was in that context that god said jeremiah just call out to me call out to me jeremiah god invites us to come whatever is happening in our lives you don't have to be a prisoner you don't have to be in a doomed city you don't have to be have people threatening to kill you you call out to god whenever there is a need whenever you need him call out to god why is it that so often we take so long to do that why is it that sometimes we have to get like jonah where we are in the belly of a fish on the bottom of the ocean before we remember to pray god says call on me and i will answer he stood ready it's important in this passage to understand that in order to receive you have to first ask god not only wants this he requires it of us god has placed himself in a position of dependency upon our asking ezekiel 22 30. i looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so i would not have to destroy it but i found none as one pastor wrote in creating man with a free will and making man a partner in subduing the earth god voluntarily limited himself he made his work on earth dependent upon man what he would do or not do god commissioned man with the responsibility to subdue and rule over the earth in god giving man responsibility for life on earth he also limited his own involvement god involves himself as man his caretaker makes requests of him man by his prayers holds the lifeline to the blessings and specific involvement of god in human affairs this is why jesus taught us to pray your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven we pray god you come and be involved god come and be involved in human affairs be involved in our world god we give you permission to come and bring your kingdom and bring your righteousness and bring your power to bear on the problems that are around us so why is it that often we wait so long why is it that so often we pray so little we have been invited we have been invited by god to come to call on him so why do we usually only do that as a last resort god stands ready all the resources of heaven are at his disposal but it's our job to call on him to ask prayer is powerful i said this the first week prayer is powerful i heard the story that there was this farmer and his wife now the farmer's wife went to church every sunday she was known as being a very righteous woman known by everyone in the community but the farmer not so much i mean the farmer was being known as a guy he he never went to church his language was vulgar you know he just wasn't a very nice and one night this farmer went out and got drunk and he came back and his wife was there in the kitchen and said you know i've been waiting up for you and this farmer hauled off and hid his wife the wife went to the bedroom she knelt down on her knees and she began to pray the farmer went down the hallway and was listening in to what his wife was praying and the wife prayed this oh god i've tried oh god i've prayed but god i have had it i can't take it anymore so god either save him or kill him i don't care which and that farmer made a beeline out of that house out to the barn and he bowed down on his knees to receive jesus christ as his lord and savior and his life was completely transformed he started going to church he was a different person and months later they were driving to church together and the wife asked what was it that finally did it what was it that finally made the difference and the farmer said man it's when i heard you pray that prayer because i know i have learned one thing god always answers your prayers that's our prompting god has invited us to come he invites each one of us call on me number one but number two not simply the promise or simply the prompting what is the promise what is the expectation god says to jeremiah call on me and i will answer you that's the promise call on me and i will answer you you do your part i'll do my part our job is to pray god's job is to answer we have the assurance that if we do our part he will do his part we have the assurance the expectation the confidence that god will answer us first john 5 14 this is the confidence we have in approaching god that if we ask anything according to his will that he hears us and we know that if he hears us whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked for the promises is that god hears us and wants what is best for us now that doesn't mean god will give us everything we ask for because again you have to pray according to his will not according to our will god is a good parent good parents know you don't just give kids everything they ask for they might ask for a knife they may ask for something that's going to hurt them you don't give them that you give them what they need not what they want but the promise is that god will hear us if we pray to him god will hear us psalm 55 verse 17 evening morning and noon i cry out in distress and he hears my voice god hears us always hears us that's a promise in understanding this promise you have to understand who is it that is making this promise who is the one that invites us to come well it says in verse 2 that i read at the beginning this is what the lord says he who made the heavens and the earth the lord who formed it and established it the lord is his name the god who invites us to call on him is the almighty the infinite god of creation that's who it is that is making this promise to us there is nothing that is too difficult for god and a matter of fact jeremiah in the chapter before affirms this when he says ah sovereign lord in jeremiah 32 17 ah sovereign lord you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm nothing is too hard for you remember the old song that was based on this verse i'm not going to sing it today and test your sanctification but um but our lord god thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy great power our lord god thou has made the heavens and the earth by thine outstretched hand nothing is too difficult for you nothing is too difficult for you great and mighty god great in counsel and mighty indeed nothing nothing absolutely nothing nothing is too difficult for you do you believe that do you really i mean you've maybe you've sung that song before do you actually believe what that song says if we really believe it are we acting like it are we acting like we really believe that do we live like it i think one of the problems is that so often instead of praying god thy kingdom come thy will be done our prayer is god my kingdom come my will be done we ask god to do what we want and the problem with that is that we don't know what we need sometimes very often we don't have all the information we don't have an understanding we don't know exactly what it is that is best for us and sometimes we come to god and we plead with him and we beg him for things that would only hurt us that would only drive us farther from him i heard about a a gospel singing group that was invited to go to northern ireland this is back in the day when the catholics and the protestants were fighting each other and you know there was a lot of terrible stuff that was happening anyways this group was going to go and there was this kind of outdoor venue in front of this department store in londonderry and they were ready to go they were going to set up and they were going to sing outdoor this big venue and all the people were going to come and listen to them and everything looked great but there was a problem there was rain in the forecast and so they said no problem we're just going to pray the rain away we're just going to pray that this rain doesn't happen and so that group got together and they gathered together in this little park in front of the department store and they began to pray god you're going to hold off the rain god we know that that you're going to hold the rain away so that we could have this concert that so we can sing these songs and and bless the people of londonderry and as they were praying suddenly drop drop drop and the skies grew black and the lightning began to come and the rain began to pour down and the team was so dis they were so disheartened they're like god why why are you allowing the rain god why well the organizer realized you know what there's a hall just around the corner and i know nobody's using it right now let's just go use it and so very quickly they just ran to this hall they opened up the doors they moved their signs and they began singing inside this hall and all these people that were supposed to be gathering in this park decided to just go down the street and into this hall and they were all up in that hall as the group was singing and in the middle of that concert a car bomb exploded outside that department store that car bomb had been parked there the night before it was just sitting there waiting to go off and if that car bomb had gone off when that singing group and that big crowd of people was in that little park across the road from the department store many many many people would have been killed but as it was the bomb went off but all the people weren't there they were down the road out this little hall listening to this gospel group you see god knew what they didn't and even though the team was so disheartened and even though the team was saying god why are you allowing this reign god why are you allowing this to happen it's spoiling our plans god had a greater plan god prompts us he invites us to call on him and promises us that he will answer when we do so number two but number three the provision what is the provision call to me and i will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know i will tell you great and unsearchable things that you do not know we're invited to call out to god god promises to answer us and what is the answer it's revelation that god reveals himself to us the word that's used for unsearchable is the hebrew word batshar the word literally means cut off something that's cut off it's the same word used in deuteronomy 128 to describe a fortified city with walls up to heaven the city with the walls up to heaven is cut off it's impenetrable there's nothing that can get into it and that's the picture inaccessible impenetrable the greatest things of god are not the things we learn with our brain they're not the things that we can figure out in our own strength the great things of god the inaccessible things of god are only learned in prayer as god reveals himself to us that's first corinthians 2 14 says the man without the spirit does not accept the things that come from the spirit of god their foolishness to him for he cannot understand them because they are spiritually discerned so often in life we can find ourselves in situations that are beyond our control so often you know i'll i'll listen to someone do in counseling and this person will be telling me of all these problems and their life they have this problem and that problem and this problem and that problem and it's like a big knot this great big knot and the more they try to untangle the knot the tighter the knot becomes and it just seems impossible the answer is inaccessible it's unsearchable god is the god of the impossible god demonstrates this to jeremiah in the chapter before by asking jeremiah to step out in faith and to do something to show his power and his might to the people around him he says jeremiah i want you to buy a field now think about this again think about this because it's a lovely picture you have this guy prisoner surrounded by people who want to kill him he's in this doomed city surrounded by this army that's about to destroy it and jeremiah is told jeremiah i want you to invest in the future i want you to buy a field that is equivalent to renting a deck chair on the titanic after it has hit the iceberg right not a great idea who does that you know the ship is going down why invest in something that isn't going to be there and yet god knows god knows this is god's way of saying to jeremiah jeremiah i know things look tough i know things look impossible i know jeremiah that you can't figure out how everything is going to work itself out but jeremiah i got this i got this jeremiah i'm going to take control of this jeremiah 32 verse nine so i bought the field from anathoth from my cousin hannah mel and weighed out for him 17 shekels of silver i signed this and sealed the deed had it witnessed and weighed out the silver on the scales why invest in something that was about to be destroyed because god had a plan because god knew and maybe in your life there is something that is happening and you just can't see around it you just can't see how this impossible situation is going to be overcome god has got this it may be inaccessible to you but it's not inaccessible to him there are times when naomi asked me to come into the kitchen because she needs me to reach something for her it's because she's like three feet tall right so so you know she'll be up there trying to reach something and we have these very high shelves in our kitchen and so i'll just walk in there you know because i got the big lanky arms and you know i'm able to reach right up at that top shelf and i'm able to stay here it's nothing for me i just walk up whoop it's what's inaccessible to her is not inaccessible to me i can reach things that she can't god can reach things that you can't god can get stuff that you can't even with the tallest ladder on earth god is able to do things that you can't do and he doesn't mind when you ask him for help in a matter of fact he wants you to ask him for help so is there anything beyond your reach anything beyond your strength god can untie the tightest knot he has the resources to meet your need he has the wisdom to solve any problem he has the power to cover any weakness all we have to do is pray spurgeon wrote prevailing prayers are victorious with the god of mercy prevailing prayers lifts the christian to mount carmel enables him or her to cover the heavens with the clouds of blessing the earth with floods of mercy caused the fire of god to fall on the altar of sacrifice prevailing prayer bears the christian aloft to mount pisca and shows the inheritance of god's pilgrims to the promised land it elevates us to mount tabor and transfigured us there until the likeness of the lord jesus christ radiates through our inner man if you would ever reach something higher than ordinary experience of a fallen man look to the rock that is higher than you gaze with the eyes of faith through the window of prevailing prayer when you open the window on your side it will not be bolted on the other we have been invited to pray we have been invited to come i want to take that a step further this morning i want to say if there's anyone in here this morning that needs prayer i invite you to come we're going to have people up here after the service to pray this is the first time we've done this really since the pandemic head but we want to make sure every sunday we have prayer we have people here that are willing to pray with you that are available to pray with you we're going to do that through the rest of the pandemic but we also have just outside those doors up there we have a new prayer room that we are developing and we want to raise up prayer teams that are available to pray for people and we want to specifically pray around this strategic opportunity that we have on sunday mornings called the sunday service this hour that we spend together we want to raise up prayer warriors who will come and who will pray before the services while people are still at home wondering should i go to church shouldn't i go to church we want people here an hour beforehand praying god would you please put in the heart of people that they need to come this morning they need to come and and praying for all elements of the service we would love to have people praying during this service praying that lord with the pastor who's up there on the stage right now lord would you be just filling him would you be using him father would your spirit be touching hearts and lives as people listen to him and for our kids downstairs in in children's church and for the ushers and and for the worship team lord would we just cover this service in prayer that the people who come especially non-believers who come would feel and experience god and as i mentioned after the service i want to invite you not simply to come and pray but i invite you to come and be involved in prayer in praying for other people we need intercessors we need prayer warriors we need people who will be involved there is no greater joy than praying for another person and just being a conduit of god's blessing in the life of another person it's wonderful it's wonderful even the past week i've had the opportunity to pray for people and it's been just wonderful to be involved that god would allow us to come and be involved in that process god wants us to be a blessing he invites us to call on him he promises us that he will hear us and answer us and that he would reveal himself to us what a wonderful wonderful promise that is but we have to do something an invitation is only as good as the person who receives it and accepts it in order for an invitation to have any value you have to be able to respond to it heard the story of a guy who was having financial problems and he went to his pastor and said pastor you know i'm having all these financial problems what should i do and the pastor said well you probably just need to pray about this you know pray hard about this and the man said okay and so he went home and he prayed god i pray that i would win the lottery god just give me the word give me the numbers i prayed that i would win the lottery and well the lottery came and the lottery went and he didn't win and so he went back to god and said well i don't understand god you know i prayed that i would win i didn't so maybe maybe it's unbelief maybe i'm harboring unbelief in my life and so he's he prayed god i pray that that that you know i believe that i'm gonna win the lottery so god please let me win the lottery the lottery came the lottery went he didn't win and so he thought to himself well maybe there's sin in my life and so he came and he began to confess all the sin his life god you know if i've wronged anyone if i've done anything god forgive me and i just pray that i wouldn't and finally this booming voice came from heaven and said enough already would you just go buy a ticket you can't win unless you buy a ticket i do not encourage anyone to go buy a lottery ticket okay i'm not saying that this morning i'm not saying you know that that's a that's a great idea towards financial planning but i'm what i am saying this is that you know it does require you to do something right it does mean you have to do something if you will do your part god will do his part no matter what's happening in your life right now no matter where you're at if you're high if you're low if everything's going great if your life is a mess god stands ready and he invites you this day to call on him let's pray heavenly father we thank you for your goodness and your love father we thank you that you invite us to call on you and that you will answer you will reveal yourself to us and father we pray that this morning lord we call out to you in good times and bad times in strength and weakness we call to you father and we thank you lord that you are a god that loves us and you are a god who wants
