welcome back my name is Carrie and today I'm going to show you the latest affordable prefab home from an unlikely Builder that's Making Waves online every once in a while an idea captures the imagination of the internet it goes viral and it doesn't matter where you look it seems like everyone's talking about it well it happened again I was recently cruising the internet minding my own business when I saw a prefab home with a price tag of 43 000 and I thought to myself finally a price point that won't get me lit up in the comments and might even lead to a little bit of activity on the like button for the YouTube algorithm people are constantly on the lookout for what could be the next affordable housing solution so when I saw the headline I knew I had to find out more turns out yeah it is available but there's a bit more to both the story and the bottom line for those looking to buy the home I'm talking about is the 540 square foot getaway pad from Home Depot that has a price tag listed at forty three thousand eight hundred and thirty two dollars what I'm going to do is show you the home figure out why it's gone viral and and let you know what's involved in buying one yesterday I did my big weekly deep dive to find out what's new and exciting in the prefab home industry and a 43 000 prefab home from Home Depot was eating up most of the headlines on the first page of Google News the last time I saw this many headlines about a single topic was a couple years ago when rumors started flying around that Elon Musk was living in a boxable casita on the SpaceX property in Texas this time around doesn't include Elon or boxable but the price point is similar so maybe the 40 to 50 000 range is the key to going viral I guess we'll find out a few of the headlines that caught my attention were USA Today Home Depot's prefab one bedroom home kit latest housing crisis solution New York Post would you pay 43 000 for Home Depot tiny house The Daily Mail would you live in a tiny home Home Depot sells range of miniature houses for under fifty thousand dollars an Insider Home Depot tiny home kit with spiral staircase under 50K all of those were within the last four days bit of a buzz here from what I can tell the media bus started on May 31st with a tweet from The Frugal gay on Twitter who said Home Depot offering one bed one bath 540 square foot house for 44k thoughts then he posted a picture of the getaway pad a screenshot from Home Depot's website that includes the base price of forty three thousand eight hundred thirty two dollars when I saw it the Tweet had been liked more than 35 000 times which triggers the algorithm and led to it being viewed more than 15 million times in less than a week that's more views than my channel got all of last year but okay it's an absolutely absurd amount of views if we can run up 35 000 likes on this video that'd be great thanks in advance if you're in North America you'll likely know what Home Depot is but for everyone in other parts of the world that might not it's a chain of hardware stores and sometimes if you're lucky they'll have a hot dog stand out front they've got all the essential departments and centers like the garden center kitchen Department building materials etc etc even though this is a new tweet I don't believe it's a new offering from Home Depot it's just getting some new attention which is as good of a reason as any to have a closer look at what they've got going on with these things it almost seems too good to be true doesn't it first glance at the Home Depot prefab home offering renderings and it looks pretty good a one bedroom one bathroom that's listed as a getaway pad 540 square foot one bedroom and rooftop deck tiny home steel building kit Adu cabin guest house it's a bit of a mouthful it turns out they've actually got a full line of these things with different sizes designs and price points and they certainly aren't the best surrenderings I've ever seen but good enough that we get the idea and that's all that matters it's noted that the kit has pre-assembled steel panels that facilitate hassle-free installation that it's made of high quality steel to ensure durable use and that its termite and Shrink proof for easy easy maintenance no shrinkage must be nice first things first it says rate in the title that this is designed to be an Adu or an accessory dwelling unit meaning it's the second home on a property that can be used for whatever the homeowner needs more space for the description says plus one introduces our getaway pad steel frame home kit architecturally designed to provide extra space outside of your home for personal use the framing kit is designed for easy assembly on your own concrete slab it then says this getaway pad home kit by plus one homes includes only the steel structure and necessary components to assemble them the Home Depot offers most finishings you'll need to complete your personal space such as doors windows Electrical Plumbing and finishes the getaway pad home kit has allowances in the steel frame structure design for all elements required offering 620 square feet of total inside Area allowing you to utilize the space the way you desire there it is the bubble is officially burst because based off the original tweet one might assume that they're getting a fully finished home for the listed price but that isn't the case the forty four thousand dollars is actually just for the steel panels that make up the shell of the home everything else required to finish the home is up and over that price right down to the toilet I see this as a good jumping off point for the handy or Weekend Warriors who have the time skills and money to finish something like this which I do not although I did stand near a sewage treatment plant and drink beer while my brother-in-law fixed it the other day so maybe I picked up a few handyman skills by observing I doubt it I'm going to assume that a lot of people who saw that headline myself included were likely excited about the idea of a 44 000 prefab home but once you let the initial disappointment wear off it's still a pretty interesting offer that is worth exploring further when I first heard about it I thought it was a bit strange that Home Depot was in the prefab space but then I realized like most everything else in their store they're the retailer they aren't actually manufacturing the steel panel home kit the kit itself comes from plus one home kits who say they're on a mission to deliver affordable prefabricated houses that can be built by anyone their website says our Plus One Billing System makes life easy I like the sounds of that construction is fast and efficient because of our detailed construction guides we support and guide all our clients throughout the process and what comes next throughout their Adventure building their own home yada yada and finally it says our system is made to be simple like a jigsaw puzzle so any diy-er can build their very own house it is still pretty interesting so let's have a look at the model that's been the center of attention online as mentioned the getaway pad is a one bedroom one bathroom plan with a rooftop deck which I like the way they have the layout set up the entrance is on the side into the living space kitchen the bathroom is located in the middle of the home and the bedroom is at the back it's noted online that the rooftop deck is an upgrade but if that's something you're looking for it's available and they show a spiral staircase to get you up there it isn't clear what the room on the rooftop is but they show a barbecue of a science so potentially some kind of summer kitchen and or wet bar I guess if buyers are finishing the home themselves they can make it whatever they want feel free to let your imagination run wild as far as the finishes go the sky really is the limit with this thing the kid handles the structure and the buyer can put the final touches on it however they want depending on their own personal style and budget if you're DIY capable individual they aren't going to just let you marching off the street and throw one of these things in the back of your car they've listed that the very first step is to take the preliminary plans to the local Authority for approval and any corrections they require need to be sent to home people or plus one homes before it's ordered the kit can actually be customized to meet the local building Authority's requirements which is kind of cool and not something that I was expecting it doesn't say it flat out but it sounds like approval from the building department is a requirement of purchasing one of these things which I think is great you don't want to get it home start setting it up and then get shut down in my mind that should always be the first step find out if you can put what you want to put where you want to put it moving beyond the shell they do provide a takeoff list which is said to be a basic materials list of what will be required to finish the home you can then customize what finishes you actually buy and install it yourself or I guess there is always the option of hiring a contractor to come out and handle it but I think that kind of defeats the purpose at that point why not just have them build the whole thing they'd probably prefer it one thing's for sure the internet is having an absolute Heyday with the potential of a forty four thousand dollar prefab home but there's more than meets CI had us all excited for a couple minutes there though it's still an interesting idea but there is more time and money involved in the original tweet lets on Home Depot is selling 540 square foot prefab homes from plus one home kits allowing people to DIY their own Adu these kits have gone viral this week like nothing I've seen in a while so it'll be interesting to see if this is a 15 minutes of fame situation or they'll become a popular option in the space this isn't the first time I've heard about the prefab home options from Home Depot but it is the first time I've taken the time to check them out so I'm happy it's gone viral I always find it interesting to see what people are drawn to with anything to do with prefab home options so I'll be following along with what they're up to and posting updates right here on my YouTube channel that's all I've got for today if you like manufactured home videos make sure to subscribe to my channel because I've got new ones coming out every single week thanks for watching see in the next
