hey guys how's it going Laura with garden answer we are on Mackinac Island in Michigan here for proven winners grand Garden Show and right behind me is the beautiful Grand Hotel so what we thought it would be fun to do today is just show you around the gardens here at the hotel [Music] so this is a garden that greets you when you initially arrived at the hotel super welcoming and beautiful we've got even some fall elements already we've got a little bit of kale mixed in here we've got some zinnias some osteo sperm um potato vine I just I love just the wild riot of color and then right up in the center you can see well first of all the first thing I noticed was the verbena so the meteor showers I think this is meteor showers verbena absolutely beautiful I love that plant that's a pollinator attractant like crazy but you can see the pineapple right in the center which is the international symbol of welcome so it really works perfectly in this spot this is the second of the two kind of welcoming beds the first one is when I just showed you it's a little bit smaller this is the bigger of the two and they've kind of designed this and they're really neat like horseshoe shape and I don't know if there's some reason behind that there probably is I did notice that a lot of the plantings are repeat so it's a lot of the same colors which is really nice it makes it very cohesive but I did notice in this one we've got some beautiful super beena and then some purple fountain grass and I love especially on this kind of breezy day it adds a lot of movement to this area I think it's absolutely gorgeous so this right here is where you enter the Grand Hotel and you can see the patio which is 660 feet long it's the world's longest front patio before we head up to the porch I wanted to stop and show you guys this super beautiful flower bed it's so long and so full of color there are marigolds in there snapdragons more verbena looks like they're super bells and supertunias tucked in along the edge they use approximately 125,000 annuals in their garden beds every year just to create this super striking display and it's absolutely gorgeous but even more gorgeous is right to my right here look at this view this is the tea garden and we will head down there and show you guys up close and personal views and show you the plants down there as well but you can see the water the big fountain is just a beautiful space so we're up on the porch now and again this is the world's longest porch at 660 feet beautiful love all the white rocking chairs but right along the edge and worked into a lot of the planters up here are red geraniums and that is their signature flower here at the Grand Hotel and they use 2500 drain suggests on the patio alone and think a total of 260 planting boxes which is amazing this is my favorite look at the views you can see the golf course the church the water in the distance and the tea garden down below I think Aaron and I are gonna play a little chess now [Music] I lost we're down in the tea garden now and you can see the hotel right to my right up there we just came down the set of stairs and it's just beautiful down here they have all kinds of games set up for people to play I'm not interested in playing any of them right now because I don't want to lose any more but they've got things like croquet which I love to play we play this in my parents garden all the time but right when you get to the base of the stairs so you can see this long sidewalk here and they've got it lined with benches so people can sit and watch or just sit and enjoy the flowers and the beautiful garden that's surrounding them lots of beautiful annuals you can see they just use annuals all over the place it's backed by a bunch of roses I don't know what variety they are but looks like there's a lot of pink which looks really great up against kind of this white picket looking fence and then let's head this direction and take a look at some hydrangeas over here so it looks like these are a type of hydrangea arborescens either an Annabelle or an incredible I'm thinking Annabelle because there's a lot of staking going on in the center to keep these upright and the animals tend to flop a little bit more than the incrediballs do absolutely beautiful though I love kind of this creamy white with almost a chartreuse look to it bunch of lilies right up front here which are gorgeous color and another beautiful hard range it looks like a quick-fire almost none of these things are labeled so I'm hoping I'm not getting it at least close in my ID here but I just planted some that look just like that lot smaller but the blooms look really similar I love the pink so they start off white like this and then they aged to a beautiful pink like that I love that it's kind of like you get two plants for one and then there's another bank of hydrangeas over here that are to die for you guys have to see them but first this urn this actually reminds me a lot of the urn in our Versailles garden a larger version of it a little bit different color but it's got a ram Rams head on the side beautiful I love it I could find a spot for that in my garden and check out these containers they're humongous I want to say that there by Crescent garden because we have quite a few pots by them and this has kind of the same look I'm not sure but this is really impressive there's one on each side yeah these are pretty impressive but these are the hydrangeas I wanted to show you so this is at the base of the other set of stairs so there's like a main staircase that comes down and then splits off we came down the right side this is the left side so this is what you see when you come down here and they're absolutely gorgeous so I'm imagining that they start off more of like this white right here and then they age to the pink as a you know you get later into summer and closer to fall I don't know what variety these are exactly they look like they could be like even a Zinfandel or pinky-winky even they are a hydrangea paniculata of some variety looks like we've got more quickfires right back in there really nice now let's take a look at the fountain this area is super pleasing just the sound of the water it just feels so peaceful the fountain itself is gorgeous just very grand it really fits the scale of the hotel and then back behind it you can see starting over there they've got I think those are crab apples down there I need to get closer to see for sure but it's just a back planted with hostas and rhododendrons there's a big wall of harbor Vitus and Cedars back in there you can see they've got more great big pots kind of flanked by some smaller pots which i think is awesome because these are full of hydrangea and ferns which I've never seen that combo together and that's really beautiful you almost can't see the hydrangea foliage you think that the blooms are kind of coming from the burns we've got some Brenna red back here looks like Jack Frost blooms beautiful forget-me-nots like blooms in the spring I bet that is wonderful in the springtime looks like some almost like tiny tuff stuff hydrangeas right back in there really pretty lace cap type beautiful roses look at this and then of course like the lights are beautiful at night the whole thing it just it glows it's a really really fun area but you guys have really might like what's down around this corner we've got some more annuals in here looks like a rib beck yet I don't know if that's an annual Rebecca it might be there's some dahlias the red right there zinnias up front some I don't know if you see it Cleo more cleome I don't know I planted some last year - really neat annual flower but this is what I wanted you guys to see it is kind of a topiary horse and carriage which is fun because that's how you get around on this island you either have to ride bikes or you need to get on a horse and or a carriage you need to get on carriage pulled by a horse so this is really cool that they have this down here you can see it when you're coming in to the main road when you come to the grand comes right along that fence right there so you can see down in here you can see the gardens you can see this you see all the beautiful flowers in the front but this is primarily ivy looks like on both the horse and the carriage looks like it's doing very well and then there are pots in here just to provide a little bit of extra color with some geraniums and osteo spur mums yeah it's really pretty this that is gorgeous I love the colors in here you've got some astilbe that the bees are loving this looks like the variety visions maybe and then you've got some ligularia back here which is a great shade plant and great for kind of a boggy area so this and it does feel moist down here I wonder if they planted that down here on purpose because both astilbe and legal area like a lot of water beautiful heuchera right here I don't know what variety maybe black pearl maybe not quite dark enough it looks really gorgeous against the color of the hydrangeas down here more hydrangeas look at the blue that's something that does not happen in our area because we are so alkaline so high alkaline that this right here would be pink it would be that color at at our home so this is just absolutely beautiful I want to pick a big bouquet of them and I'm a huge fan of any kind of spiky bloom so this Veronica right here looks so pretty kind of coming out of the hydrangea look at that look at the bumblebee I love seeing that so again there's a lot of repeat plantings down here and this is totally my color scheme all the pinks and purples the dark colored foliage look at the ajuga down there how pretty that looks it's just such a pleasing landscape to me and I like the Pops of yellow in and amongst the you know the with the leg Yule area and the yellow foliage beautiful nine bark back in here you see that that looks beautiful in front of that hedge love it so now I want to go around the corner because this is a really inviting pathway and if you follow it all the way back it's where you pick up your bike so they have a little bike rental area where you can rent bike so you can ride around the island so when you pick them up then you have to ride your bikes back and down this little Lane and look at that isn't that a picture it's just over grown with trees I mean to me anything is overgrown because in our area this doesn't exist not even close it's just so green and lush looking and there's hydrangeas peeking out all over the place it's just wonderful and this right here is one of the best things to me I love it when stuff is mass planted like that see all those hostas there's 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 15 15 hostas in this little area and it's just so striking if there were only three it would not near is like wow factor as it does when you've got so many and look at this hedge of hydrangeas so beautiful look at the size of those blooms so we just made a big loop around the tea garden and we're ending on this bed right here you can see the Grand Hotel right behind me and then right to my right you can see the games that we saw when we initially came down here but I really wanted to end on this flower bed because of how beautiful it is particularly from this angle you can see the benches down here lining the front to begin with then you have a shorter layer perennials and then it gradually gets taller as you get to the back I think it's so well done and the colors are beautiful and I love that there's Joe Pye weed right here this is one of the perennial I'm talking about in my presentation on Tuesday so I love to see a big drift of that right there there's beautiful day lilies daisies peonies dusty Miller just a bunch of beautiful things in this bed so as far as the Grand Hotel goes it's kind of hard for me to put my finger on what style it is inside I do really think about it I think it's kind of a mixture of like modern Regency which is bold colors the use of really bold colors and bold materials like metals and glass to contrast each other and complement each other to kind of give you this feeling of opulence but you still feel comfortable there's also some baroque elements in there like the way pictures are framed some of the designs that way some of the carving really both florals like bold florals and bold stripes bold colors it's just such a unique different experience and I think that's what they're going for because it's something you don't get anywhere else you go I think they want guests to feel like it's a gift to them like you come here you experience something completely different but yet you still feel feel comfortable here I would definitely recommend if you ever have a chance to come to Mackinac Island and visit the Grand Hotel I would do it it's totally worth every every second the island itself is amazing you really feel like you step back in time like I said earlier there's no vehicles on this island it's all horse and carriage and bicycle so it's just a completely different feel something I've never experienced before and of course we're here for the Grand Garden Show for proven winners so we have been able to tour some private gardens which we will do some video tours for you guys to see a great time to come to the island because you get access to places you wouldn't normally get if you weren't here for the garden show these homes are privately owned and the owners are just so welcoming and they're so proud of everything that they've done in their gardens they really really strive for beauty like beautiful color beautiful plants beautiful design and it really shows it's so worth it so inspiring so anyway that is the garden tour video for today of the Grand Hotel Gardens I hope you guys enjoyed it and we will see you in the next one bye [Music]
