[Music] oh Never Can Say Goodbye in 2009 one year after br's release melee went into the Dark Ages tournament's pretty much hit an all-time low in terms of its attendance at the time the fact that people even still played melee must have been really bizarre I mean I feel in 2022 it's been established that the melee Community is tight but in 2009 it wasn't as clear the community was much smaller and the future of the game was beyond leak despite this people still hosted tournaments and still argued who the best in the world was in 2009 there was really only one player who could be considered the best depending on where you lived see in the US the clear-cut answer for the best in the world was clearly mango for the past year he smacked around every other competitor in his way with his former main Jigglypuff although jiggly puff is generally considered a slow and more boring character he made her into an aggressive mind reading monster but there was a problem while mango did in fact destroy everyone who came in his way there was someone who he hadn't fought yet someone outside the US entirely Armada much like mango Armada was faren away the greatest player in Europe he made Peach and he had mastered playing her beyond what anyone in the US had he had a legendary punish game matched with an optimal neutral game in short a deadly combination there wasn't a sing single person who could pose any threat to either mango or Armada so naturally people began to speculate who would win in their first encounter which would take place at the tournament Genesis at the time the majority of people thought Armada would come to Genesis and maybe get top 64 as America was considered to be the stronger country which was and still is definitely true but none of this discouraged Armada and he still went into Genesis determined to win [ __ ] wow oh oh my wow this [ __ ] is hella good [ __ ] oh Against All Odds Armada defeated every single big player at the tournament even Mewtwo King who was nearly undefeated at the time wor can't describe the feelings that is in this room [Applause] this just doesn't happen I don't think it's ever happened before or after this Armada is one crazy bastard Armada finds himself in Winner's finals where he must fight mango for the very first time on Mango side of the bracket he had a fairly easy route to Winners finals barely dropping any games on his way there so this was it for the very first time mango versus Armada wow wow oh W what the oh my [Music] god [Music] wow [Music] nice wow we're coming to [Music] Europe in a close set Armada barely clutches out the victory against mango 3 to2 this was insane his very first time in America fighting against completely new players and Armada beats every single one of them to make it to Grand finals on the winner side while that's already crazy enough on its own even crazier was just to come mango brutally defeats hungry box 3 0 in losers finals to get to Grand finals on their loser side where he must defeat Armada in two sets to take the tournament while he played with his Falon in their set in winners for Grand finals he decided to either ride or die with Jigglypuff it was only their first time at the same tournament and even then it was already back and forth in this coming set these two would make history mango got to win two sets like hey mango welcome to physics where you [Music] at I don't think mango lost his tournament 6 [Music] pound not be mango this B he's [ __ ] mango up God [Music] damn was like I'm right I ain't even going to get to 20 he might [Music] win oh [ __ ] oh oh my [Applause] [Music] wow everyone's yelling it's so hype come on man go go [Music] [Music] is playing so good the tables turn drastically yeah this is [ __ ] with him now yeah he could have just won the tournament just now I don't agree but that [Applause] is [Applause] cing [Music] while melee was certainly in the Dark Ages at this time the influence this set had was Monumental people still talk about it to this day I mean look at me I'm talking about it right now this set was [ __ ] nuts mango won two sets back to back in some of the craziest melee I've ever seen period he genuinely must have sold his soul to the devil for this win because some parts are downright unbelievable after almost almost losing the tournament game four mango makes the call out of a lifetime and rest Armada after successfully predicting he'd roll away this just doesn't happen I'm not even just saying that that's the read of a lifetime it's crazy too as Peach puff is one of the slower matchups in the game but these two somehow made it into an intense battle while people considered mango the best after this it was clear to everyone that Armada was a strong competitor that could go toe-to-toe with any American player the question on everyone's mind now was when were they going to fight next Genesis 1 set the scene for the coming rivalry between mango and Armada they played a total of three times and even from the get-go it was really competitive with their set count being 2 to one while people were itching to see when these two would face off next they wouldn't get the chance to see it for two long years as mango didn't really participate in any serious manner around this time Armada on the other hand would ironically try his heart out for the next two years only to become known as Mr second place as he lost three grand finals in a row each to different players while Amaro was doing everything in his power to claim a first place Victory mango just sat back and enjoyed the show while it seemed mango was more than comfortable taking a break from La there was definitely one thing that could rope him back in to ahuh Genesis 2 would take place in July of 2011 the stakes could not be higher every single big name player would be there mango Armada hungry box mewt King and ppmd any of these five could have easily taken the event but what everyone wanted to see was a rematch between mango and Armada not only did people want to see mango at his first serious event in a while they also wanted to see who was truly the better player between these two only playing as at one tournament and their game Count being 9 to6 meant that there wasn't a clear favorite in terms of who was better with Armada becoming the master of getting second place this would be his opportunity to win the first big event against every player that had beaten him in the past 2 years and for mango this would be his chance to prove he was still a formidable competitor despite not playing for a bit and with that the tournament began reminiscent of the first Genesis mango and Armada both performed well in the early bracket and seemed to be on a collision course to once again meet in winners finals but out of nowhere this happened that's [Music] it what the [ __ ] mango was beat by someone nobody expected Taj would beat mango 3 to2 sending mango down to round six of losers while this was definitely a Twist Taj would meet Armada in winners finals and get completely outclass by his Peach just like Genesis one Armada secures himself a spot in the winner side of grand finals because mango was out of the game for so long his odds of making it to Grand finals seemed unlikely but definitely possible his road to Grand finals would consist of shroomed hungry Brocks and a rematch with Taj things didn't look easy but mango was set on delivering this tournament after all it was Genesis M mango definitely wants to prove that he's the best right now but armad wants to prove the same [ __ ] too so mango you could call this a warm-up for a mo right now this boy spazzing [Music] [Music] out not only did mango make it to Grand finals he completely embarrassed his opponents on the way there in his rematch against Taj he messed up Taj so bad he actually forfeited the set after just two games in a best of five now that's what you call classy a pking controller dog a pking controller forfeit my [ __ ] he forfeits he forfeits he knows he got mango put Mel gave this [ __ ] the corporation in a repeat of Genesis 1 mango would claw his way through the losers bracket to face off against Armada on the winner side one player was looking for their opportunity to prove themselves the other was looking to reclaim a former glory the stakes were high both on a competitive and a personal level they say lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place well that my friend is a lie man you already know what it is we have finals the rematch [ __ ] is hype son Mano got to win two sets yet [Music] again [Music] all right man I don't need to tell you what fox and piece need to do man you just see two [ __ ] go at it [Music] [Applause] [Music] we got the first Genesis all over again I [Applause] [Music] know they just [ __ ] each other up back and [Music] forth same [ __ ] different turn yeah same [ __ ] same [ __ ] [Music] ready [Music] oh I think that's [Applause] it [Applause] Armada finally did it he won his first major event against mango who was playing like a man on fire in an absolutely exhilarating 3-2 set Armada had finally shown he could close out a first place finish at a major event not only were they now tied 1 to one for Genesis wins but their set count was now at an even 2 to2 with their Genesis wins being tied the next question people had in mind was who would win the tiebreaker at this point Genesis was becoming synonymous with the mango or mod rivalry it's where their first two meetings were both of which were instant Classics well unfortunately everyone looking forward to the tiebreaker would have to wait for 5 years the melee landscape had changed drastically in the past 5 years going into Genesis 3 the set count was in armada's favor for sure but I wouldn't call it one-sided by any means while everyone really wanted to see mango and Armada face off at this event it seemed really unlikely as mango had the worst year of his career in 2015 and Genesis 3 would be the first tournament of 2016 Armada on the other hand had possibly the best year of competition in 2015 winning events consistently throughout the year Genesis 3 the last leg of the trilogy begins right out of the gate both players perform about as well as you think they would Armada easily makes top eight winner side dropping only a single game to Mewtwo King on Mango side of the bracket he's one set away from making top eight winner side but unexpectedly loses to axis Pikachu oh the forward smash doesn't Quick Connect he overc committed he overc committed oh is he going to survive he is get it he manages to make top eight on the loser side but if he had any hopes of making it to Grand finals he would have to win four sets one against nintendude two against one of the five gods and won a rematch against axe the two Gods mango would have to defeat or beat eaten by Armada and winners this secured a spot in the winner side of the grand finals this bracket run would eat most players alive but something about the Genesis magic just makes miracles [Music] happen been uh this has been some of the fastest I've seen mango move in a long time no yeah he's playing pretty [Music] nutty [Music] [Applause] Cena and Meo taking it in convincing [Music] fashion it's got to be oh the is riding is riding on this next 30 seconds yo yep oh man he is fearless that's it that's it he does it and there you go The Crowd Goes Wild Alex 19 hugging [Applause] him for the third time in a row mango and Armada sit in gr finals mango fighting his way up from the losers bracket Armada getting there with ease just like the first two Genesis events both players were playing absolutely out of their minds at this event I mean this is just insane the tie that had lasted 5 years would now be settled in the most climactic way possible the Genesis Trilogy would soon come to an explosive [Music] end oh now we got there's been so many things that's held us down but now it looks like things are finally coming around I know we got a long long way to and we back going to put ourselves together to poish up right if you've never been HB before I know you refuse to be down any don't you let nothing stand in your way want to every word I say every word I no stop these are the two people that everybody wanted to see see them in Grand finals St come on let's do this I know you know someone that has a negative vbe and if you try to make that only push you aside they really don't have nowhere to go ask them where they're going they don't know but we won't let nothing hold us back going to put our together we going to if you ever been down I know you refuse to be any you let I love what I'm seeing right now from the crowd and the energy it feels like ten you know it feels like a first it does feel like a first it's crazy man it's crazy how things turn out we really really got to on we're Che it out stop it St it St it hey is this not what happened at the first exact same thing on the same stage uhoh no stoping ST no stop it St no stoping ST no stoping y PPS his fist BGA puts his head down the only person to congratulate him it's rare you see mango look defeated but that was a that was a great uh yeah that was great man that was [Music] wonderful I mean you could argue these two are the best to do it you know good job forada got two Genesis titles yeah mango won but that was crazy man they both the show mang that's a that's a rough it would have been rough for anybody oh yeah you got to give it up to though for not letting the mangle's pressure consume him like that most people would have honestly some of the best melee I've ever seen both players played some of the best melee in their careers at this tournament but all in all Armada was able to close this event out in style breaking the tie after all these years 2 to one this is just one of my favorite tournaments of all time watching this live was such a roller coaster it was one of those grand finals you just really couldn't predict who would come out on top and don't even get me started on Mango's insane run and that closest nail set against hungry box in losers final I mean come on that was insane just an amazing event an absolutely perfect way to finish off the trilogy now I know what some of you are thinking what about the other Genesis events well there's been eight in total as of right now mango and Armada actually did meet in Grand finals in the exact same way once again at Genesis 4 but if I'm being real mango got the bricks beaten off of him so this story ends at three maybe we'll talk about it some other day but that's definitely the black sheep of the Genesis sets I mean plus calling it The Genesis Trilogy is just way cooler than the quad Trilogy so I chose to end this documentary on this high note I mean what a Trilogy it is while mango and Armada have tons of classic sets with each other these are the three sets that Define their rivalry for the rest of melee history there will never ever be a string of tournaments like the Genesis [Music] Trilogy special thank you to my patrons Avery Lake and Christian Bradley Avery Lake and Christian Bradley thank you so much
