The First Snow Bath of This Year WAS VERY COLD | Pastel Winter on Svalbard Has Arrived

oh my god [Music] do [Music] [Music] we are in a cabin 70 kilometers from longer view so we packed up our snowmobiles and our sleds and started driving these 70 kilometers towards the cabin in sevilla sv a group or simply svea was a mining town and when fully active it was actually the third largest settlement here on svalbard around three hundred workers living in long ibn commuted to sveagruva for work on a daily or weekly basis i was actually here a lot one winter because my friend olivia opened up a simple hotel in one of the old mine barracks so you could go and stay in svia you could even visit the mine i've actually been in the mine a bunch of my friends worked here for her so i kind of just visited them and helped them out and lynn actually was one of those people so the annual production in one of the mines called svyanud was up to 3 million ton not a relevant quantity on the world market but the biggest productivity ever reached in a coal mine in spitsbergen as a result the company made some good profits with coal mining and via node for some years profits are the exception rather than the rule for coal mining and spitzbergen mining was stopped in sevilla note in 2015. in 2013 the company storanovsky had opened a new coal mine at lunk if yellet which is just a little bit further north but it never came into the stage of productive operation it never even opened the reasons were within politics and economy and in 2017 the norwegian government as the owner of students decided to put an end to all coal mining in sveagruva including sveanod and lunki philet so by this summer most of central svia and svalbard will be gone now miners are working on clearing sorting and throwing away more than 100 years of coal mining history after almost 100 years of coal production here the land will be returned to nature once again we're staying here till sunday and we came yesterday which was thursday so it's a long cabin trip this time the cabin doesn't have any running water no electricity but for some reason we have 4g internet here which bothers me what i love to do when i go on cabin trips is to disconnect so now i first i just put my phone away and put it on no mobile network and then i um i'm reading my books this cabin is difficult to keep heated there's only a fireplace a wood stove that's the only source of heat and it's a big cabin so there's actually two bedrooms in this cabin and this cabin is a little bit crooked so the doors open this is where i slept it's not very fancy and no you don't bring any sort of proper covers or anything you just bring your sleeping bag that's it let me make up the bed oh it's night ta-da so this is this one christopher slept outside to keep the fire going and this is the other bedroom which is cool and then you have this in between room with some stuff and then this is the cabin so we're just borrowing this for the weekend i think it's going to be good when i change this though this does isn't that it's not a very good stove no but right now it's what we have so you means that you have to fill the stove every hour or so all the time even during the night so you have to wake up put some wood in to keep it all warm but today it's really toasty but it's not cold outside no i don't even know if it's like minus two no we've been using like 120 liters of wood in 120 liters in in cost that would be what like 500 corners in one not even one full day almost 22 hours it's incredible let's have a look at what the weather is because it felt very warm outside look don't mind this one it's snowing it's so quiet you might remember that last time when we saw the sun for the first time it was right here it would have been so much fun to see it here again this year but it's on tuesday we have to be in town wow there's so many reindeer here like here as well there's like one two three four five six seven eight nine that's all the ones i can see that are like really close there's often a lot of polar bears here walking on the fjord and on this ice and hunting for seal but it's very difficult to see it's like this so but it's not uncommon to have polar bear visits here [Music] you tell me you're scared [Music] you tell me you're weak [Music] but i know you're stronger than what you think [Music] and i know it's hard [Music] yeah i know it's rough [Music] but we'll make it through [Music] and i'll back you up wherever you're going i'm going to i'll follow you through the black and the blue what it's minus seven that's not a lot though and the wind is picking up a little bit note i can barely say that tomorrow it's not really picking up at all but yeah so we are staying here till sunday which is a good three days and that means well three nights and four days of pure coziness books we're gonna go out skiing today no showers we're gonna wet wipe our little armpits i love it i absolutely this is our first cabin trip for this year and it was a well needed one because we needed to get out of the village i needed to get out of the village to do something else and just to drive snowmobile yesterday it's the craziest sense of freedom when you live in a town that's this big and you can't go anywhere when you hop on your snowmobile and you can drive basically anywhere you want it just kind of sets you free today the time is 12.03 what do you want to do today you're going to ski you look like a little potato yeah that's good okay so what are we going to do today i think we're heading out i'm going to be on skis you're going to be on your snowmobile your engine skis should you make breakfast for us now your breakfast master today i breakfast master tomorrow and also our friends are coming today so aina and olivia are coming tonight with lynne and this is so exciting because we haven't been on a cabin trip all of us in such a long time like one or two years ago we would go on every single cabin trip with olivia in there every single one we would all go so i kind of missed that so that's gonna be fun it's gonna be a lot of people but i think they're arriving at like nine tonight because they have to leave from the village at around seven because lynn has to work until six so she gets off and then they can go so they're going to be here at around 9. that's nice then we have this day to ourselves and then we all play tomorrow i'm going to go skiing again with lynn and we're just going to do fun stuff wow [Music] it's a must [Music] i do let's bring me to the toilet it's an emergency we're gonna have to walk around here that's where the toilet is but this is all snow so i need to walk around it let me walk this way go get him is that protecting me are you not coming with me you are my polaroid protection because i left my gun inside hmm i look rough and i need to go to the bathroom so we are gonna go to the outhouse oh my god there's no wind and the sky is turning pink and this is just incredible wait look at this that's a lot of snow also look i'm out in my cabin boots they are so good they're for indoor but you can also walk outside because they have this thing on them so happy today i love it okay so in here is the toilet should we go and check it out it's very dark i is i should have brought a light with me i'm gonna have to have the door open in there look i found a little toilet light so to explain the toilet situation this is just a hole and underneath is a bucket that we put a um a plastic bag in a big one of those black plastic bags and then you do your business and then you bring that home with you and throw in a specific container in the village i'm gonna be snowy yes it will be easier yeah he cubed awesome hands yeah see look at him okay okay i'm going down this hill on this oh yeah yeah [Music] i need to go more like this i'm [Laughter] activity activity number two let's go yeah you should be going down here i'm not a very good skier but that is not stopping me i think i'm just not used to it at all right now if you go low i feel like you can't fix that hard i also have like not downhill skis in that sense so like we're just gonna have to get down here it did better a second ago fine when i get to the bottom we just we're aiming to go down here it's so what i was gonna say is that i keep thinking that it's daylight now and like that we have tons of daylight so today i forgot that it gets dark at like two or like three so christopher was like shouldn't we be going outside i'm like what's the stress he's like well i mean it'll be dark soon i was like oh that's a very good point okay now i'm gonna have to just gun it i was gonna say down here we're going we're going it's such an amazing feeling to just be out in the middle of nowhere and just kind of do nothing and everything you know we just hang out go skiing basically similar things that we would do in our cabin but just where nobody else is there's it's just such a special feeling i don't know there's something about it and also that it takes you a while to get here you know driving 70 kilometers is quite a long trip but not really on here but you know it's still a while to go okay i'm gonna go up to the cabin now it looks so cozy make myself another coffee and i'm gonna start reading the second no the sixth book of the seven sisters i'm gonna be so sad when i finish them all it's been like a really nice series to just kind of get lost in it's very teenage literature style kind of okay let's go up to the cabin how to give grim a good workout i just got done with the skiing i'm so sweaty let's see what time it is it's 2 30 2 30. and our friends are coming at 9pm or something wow it's getting dark now but look it's incredible so the old mining settlement that they are taking down is right there i used to well i helped out there uh one winter a little bit because my friend olivia who's coming today was running it the hotel that they opened there but they're closing it down now and taking everything down and restoring everything to the way it was it's unreal okay let's go in and have some coffee [Applause] my gosh you tell me you're scared you tell me you're weak [Music] but i know you're
