bunker shots present a massive challenge for the majority of recreational golfers there's a very common way that bunker shots are taught which I think is probably wrong for the average golfer I'm going to explain in this video why what might be a better option what Club selection might be a better option and hopefully get you out of the sand predictably every time now if you don't subscribe already be really useful if you did more people watch don't subscribe than do so please hit the Subscribe button it helps me it's going to help you [Music] right let's begin by looking at the normal average run-of-the-mill bunker lesson what are you told typically open the face right up the analogy may be said a glass of water on the club face right we've got it flat we've got the club face aiming vertically right that's usually step one in the sand it exposes tons of Bounce it's going to stop you digging it's a lot of Loft on there though second piece aim left try and cut it all right so aim left big cut swing big open face ball goes to the right spins right Happy Days goes really high really soft now have a think about where that advices come from typically it's come from the best players on the planet they do not struggle with the same full swing issues as your recreational golfers do all right not all of you are going to suffer with the same issues let me point out a couple I still give some full swing lessons right and one of the most common issues with amateur golf is I think across the globe it's fair to say is an open Club face I still got an open Club face already at some point in the swing that puts you in a bit of a weak position the second issue and that's often related to the open Club face is a club path that does what goes out in down and very very steep so the advice you're given to play a bunker shot most golfers already have a ton of it so what happens if you double down where we go open face at address we go let's say I'm left for a cut big swing that the face is already being cracked open for a lot of you and then a swing it already goes over the top so double dose is open really open really steep down and across what happens golf ball does not want to come out now luckily enough there's not a lot of sand in this bunker so it did but if there's a little bit more sound than that this ball is going to struggle to get out of the sound most of the struggles I see I still do clinics they are usually balls that don't come out because there's not enough energy and speed on the golf ball right open face cuts don't put much speed on the golf ball why do tour players do it well the majority of them don't suffer with an open Club base in the backswing or late downswing right that club is Club face is already in a pretty functional position they don't need to try and throw the club out they don't need to try and square it up or manipulate it with hands and wrist for the majority so they need to take speed off the ball right they're a different breed that's not you so we're going to kind of throw all that out completely and look at a better option for players that already have an open face already have an outswing path which is going to be most of you first thing I'm going to suggest that you change Club this was a 60 they'll play my initial shots with um I do use a 60 but I don't suffer with an open face and a club path that goes out to win right so I'm okay with that I can afford to take speed off the golf ball I'm going to suggest you go to a 54. all right now it's more manageable it's less often already even if you do ad Loft to it it's still not gonna be a problem still need plenty of speed on the golf ball the big changes though are going to come at your setup all right so traditional face open get the handle nice and low aim left don't want any of it we don't need it hands low will typically lead to a club that goes more vertical you don't need more vertical all right you need more on plane so we're going to stand you up closer to the golf ball Gonna Stand nowhere near as wide if anything is probably more in common with let's say a 40 yard 30 yard pitch shot than a flop shot which should be more the other end of things open face Cutty right so we're going to stand up to it I'm going to rotate the face open just a hair just a little bit so we're going to go from 12 o'clock to maybe 12 15 12 20. not much at all don't need a lot there's already bounce on the club I can increase it a touch I don't need a ton all right so standing up pretty tall pretty close if anything the toe might actually be slightly lower than the heel again not a problem catching the heel will tend to slow the cob down more catching the toe you will be able to Skid through a little bit more easily so we're in we're close we're tall I feel like I'm actually keeping my chest up away from the sand and the golf ball Low's problematic right for one reason I've already mentioned steep but the second one when you're low is there's much more availability or possibility that you can get the club really deep into the sand I'm talking about far underneath the golf ball you get up and away from it and suddenly the amount of sand that I can actually take is limited all right so you end up creating more of a shallow long divot versus something that's very deep and needs to start very close to the golf ball along and shower is going to give you more margin all right nice and Tall the toes down and the swing is going to be as simple as you can imagine right as you imagine you're taking the club straight back no wrist tons of width and refrigerant it would look much more like this so we're not getting any kind of complication from using the hands and wrists and twists in the club it's a big wide swing and then a big wide swing on the way through all right Ultra simplistic and you don't need a big swing now the reason you don't need a big swing is it's not an explosion anymore you're not having to apply a ton of speakers you've got so much loft and the attack is so steep it's now going to be shallower there's going to be less Loft on it you can start to use a bit of thin Nest a little bit of control the test I'd like to use or recommend is you see how slowly you can actually swing this and get the ball to travel the required distance a little bit under here but didn't quite make it up the hill not bad though not much effort right not a lot going on my hands and wrist not a huge amount of body speed again I'm going to keep referring to recreational I can't say amateur right because there are some Ultra Elite amateur golfers out there so I'll say recreational weekend golfers as soon as you ask them to apply more speed in the swing typically things get exaggerated things get more opens things get more steep you want to keep the speed down right so it's very much like a long pitch go again so tall stretching out a little bit I'm just going to draw a line we're left aiming a little bit a line to try and Trace maybe not the line you usually see in the sand right usually it's dragged in here try and hit it there somewhere I'm not worried about that we're going to take a sliver of sand that's probably six eight inches long at least it can start significantly back from the ball as long as it doesn't keep going deeper and deeper tons of width feels very straight both sides of the ball through the lot right it came out with a ton of speed contact was actually pretty good wasn't thin didn't really bounce into it it was just Ultra shallow so I can dial that down a touch bring it down a notch take a bit of speed off it once I've got control over that depth and it was a really nice simple shot now it doesn't have to go sky high priority number one for you should be to get the ball out of the bunker knowing you've got that priority you don't need speed you don't need Loft you don't need to cut it you need a nice simple upright setup wide swing if anything feel like the toe end of the sole is what hits the sand and it skids through the sand versus attacking it all right as soon as you try and attack the sound that's the problem you've got to really go in there and if you want to do a dry drill you know people will draw lines and say right I'm just going to hit this line there you go I've got control but they're not really practicing control of depth all right so I don't really like that line if you're going to draw a line I would draw a second and see how shallow an amount of sand you can take in between those two lines and you start to create something that's much more functional right you could be two three four inches behind the golf ball with your initial contact on the sand there and if it travels through that same depth the ball is still going to come out okay I'll try and demonstrate one for an example there's not much sand left in here at the minute but let's go quite a long way back and the intention of same thing same setup very unconventional tall chest away from the ball I'm going to try and come in back here somewhere and just skid it through no problem little spinny one okay that was probably this far behind the golf ball but because I'm not crashing the club in because I've got appropriate Loft on I'm not struggling with too much loft napping to apply a ton of speed and really drive it forwards I can skid the club through no problem if the sound's a little bit deeper do you do the same thing oh the only adjustment I would suggest you make let's go up here there's a bit more sound the adjustment I would suggest is you actually stand further away still so still tall just give yourself a couple more inches and that limits just how far into the sand the club can get and you can still take relatively shallow divots all right so quick recap stand up to it open the face a little bit swing is very wide both sides of the golf ball no real wrist action okay keep it super simple let's go for this deeper sound just a little bit of fun so I'm going to stand such further away try and limit the sound I can take keep that big wide Arc came out easily in a nutshell is your bunker hack
