The Dragon Ball Iceberg Explained

hello everyone welcome back to another iceberg video my video on the youtube iceberg did relatively well for my channel so i decided to do another one and what better iceberg to go with than this dragon ball iceberg fun fact for those of you who came here from my other iceberg video i used to make these videos where i would voice acts android 17 and do reactions and stuff it was cringy as all hell but it did show that i like dragon ball so so doing a dragon ball iceberg should be pretty enjoyable for me and for my viewers hopefully just taking a look at it there's some stuff on here that i already know about so for a lot of it i won't have to do all that much research because i already know some of it so let's stop wasting time just get right into this dragon ball iceberg there's only six levels this time folks so of course we're gonna start with the very top yo son goku and his friends return yo sun goku and his friend's return is an ova made in 2008 and at the time it was the first piece of new dragon ball animation in over a decade unless you count the openings to dragon ball z budokai 2 and 3. i've never actually watched this because plot wise it really doesn't seem all that interesting i mean the most interesting thing that happens in this is that we see vegeta's younger brother tarble i mean look at the two villains for this ova they look pathetic this lva just not looking very good is probably why it's never been dubbed into english and it's probably never going to be dubbed into english at this point the big green dub oh i know all about this one the big green dubs official name should be the a b group dub because it was an english dub produced by a company called ab group which operates out of france they were the ones responsible for distributing the ocean dub in the uk back in the early 2000's now of course it gets this fan name because for whatever reason this dub renamed piccolo to big green ah it's the green let that child alone that's honestly his name they they say his name in all seriousness it's known for its very awkward voice acting also every single attack that goku does is a kamehameha every time he powers up it's a kamehameha and saiyans are now just warriors and super saiyans are super warriors yeah in case you can tell this dub is just dumb thank god they just stuck to dubbing the movies instead of the actual anime dragon ball af dragon ball af is the title giving to a series that fans speculated was going to follow gt the reason people thought there was going to be a new series is because this image was posted in a spanish magazine called hobby consalas which they called super saiyan 5 goku that was back in may 1999 in october 2000 the same picture was posted to a website called majin.com where again it was called super saiyan 5 goku and that dragon ball af really was a real thing and a month later the administrators at the website had to admit that they were tricked by a con artist the easiest way to tell that this was never really a thing was because there was no advertising in the japanese media i mean come on when it comes to dragon ball whenever anything happens with that franchise there is a lot of advertising surrounding it and of course there was no official announcement from akira toriyama shueisha or toei animation although super saiyan 5 goku did get a little reference in the budokai tenkaichi series super saiyan 4 gogeta's alternative color is actually pretty much the same as super saiyan 5 goku so so yeah i guess bandai namco decided to give a little shout out dragon ball evolution oh god you all know what dragon ball evolution is don't you it's an american live-action adaptation of dragon ball that got everything wrong the main problem with it of course is the ridiculous americanization i mean goku in this movie is a white american high schooler played by a guy who at that point was nearing his thirties balm is also white and has black hair instead of blue hair and that hairstyle on a real life person is just ridiculous yeah chichi is somehow one of the few characters who escaped whitewashing yamcha was played by a guy who was pushing 40 so him hooking up with bulma who was played by a girl 17 years younger than him was kind of and just look at what the hell they did to king piccolo needless to say the movie was a huge flop everyone hated it pretty sure most of the people who were in that movie are embarrassed to have ever been in it oh by the way guess who currently holds the rights to make a live-action dragon ball movie disney oh yeah that can only end well can't it dr slump dr slump is a comedy manga that akira toriyama worked on from 1980 to 1984. it also had an anime that ran for 243 episodes despite how hugely successful it was there was never any real attempt to bring it to the west the main character of the series o'reilly who was an android would later appear in dragon ball where she easily beat general blue she also appeared in dragon ball super years later where she proved that she's still insanely strong by blasting vegeta through a wall apparently akira toriyama has actually said that she has the strength to destroy the earth with one punch and if she got into a fight with goku she'd win yeah just think if she was around every single time someone was threatening the earth she would have just beat them all easy dragon ball gt the black sheep of the dragon ball anime franchise it began just one week after dragon ball z finished unlike dragon ball and dragon ball z dragon ball gt was not based on a pre-existing story written by akira toriyama this means that people have debated for years on whether or not gt can really be considered canon while toriyama didn't do any of the actual writing for the series he oversaw the production of the anime and gave his approval for the story and the depiction of his characters he's also the one who came up with the series name with gt standing for grand tour regardless of whether or not it's actually canon gt is very much a mixed bag when it comes to the overall quality of the series goku spends pretty much the whole thing as a kid after a wish to emperor pilaf mate to turn him back into a child his granddaughter pan is a constant presence trunks has grown up to be a real dork most of the z fighters are pretty much non-existent for the majority of the series yeah it's kind of a mess it's not awful by any means but i could definitely see why so many fans just don't like it okay now down to the second level harmony gold harmony goal was the first company to attempt to localize dragon ball way back in 1989. their dub didn't do very well however it was only aired in philadelphia and detroit and they were only able to dub the first five episodes of the anime and the first and third movies because the dub failed in the ratings it was cancelled and never re-aired it wasn't seen in its entirety again until last year when the five episodes in the two movies were uploaded to archive.org by tom servo the dub is not bad by any means which is pretty impressive considering this was made in the 80s this was back when dubbing anime wasn't taken very seriously in the west and more often than not produced very bad dubs but no this dub contains some very good acting from the cast most of whom would later go on to appear in the power rangers in fact goku is voiced by barbara goodson who voiced the main villain of the first season of mighty morphin power rangers rita repulsa it's also worth noting that almost everyone's name was changed in this dub goku's name was changed to zero bulma became lena yancha became sadaki hua became squeaker oolong became mao mao krillin became bongo and of course most infamously of all korin became whiskers the wonder cat yeah this is a weird but nevertheless pretty important part of dragon ball history and if you have time definitely go and check out the dublinarchive.org gohan was going to be the main character of z okay i think what this one means is that gohan was meant to become the main character at the end of z after the cell saga because the series was actually supposed to end there you know gohan defeated cell goku was dead and asked the others not to bring him back so it seemed pretty obvious that if anyone was going to take up the mantle of the series hero it was going to be gohan unfortunately as we all know beating cell was pretty much the peak for gohan after that they did one more saga and of course goku came back and once again became the main character and gohan never really did anything noteworthy again sad really well i wonder what's next for me you peeked what you peaked you're kidding after all that yeah sorry but but i get stronger though right yeah but no oh gohan rice commercial now i can tell you that what they're referring to here is [Music] this okay so let's explain this this was made while dragon ball z kai was airing and um it's actually not advertising rice it's advertising this stuff momoya seaweed paste by the way that's not the color of the jar this stuff actually is black and you're supposed to put this on rice and can we just talk about this animation here what the hell has gohan turned into that looks disgusting and look at how he's holding that jar he's holding up his right arm but that is his left hand that is not his pinky finger that is his thumb oh and of course everyone gets that face krillin grows a nose and bulmer looks a lot less hot now doesn't she oh and there's another one as well one where shenron turns into that thing as well also piccolo ends up like that as well and if you look at his face he's like what the hell is going on so yeah these are really weird commercials but you know it's japan they're kind of known for that thing [Music] zero is our hero going back to the harmony gold dub now this is a line that said in the opening to that dub check it out here again why the hell did they change goku's name to zero saying that though the opening team to the harmony gold dub is actually really good it's pure 80s cheese and i just love it the bang zoom dub the bang zoom dub is a second english dub for dragon ball super it was made for english-speaking asian countries most of the actors who appear in it were based out of la and it's worth noting that three of the voice actors from the harmony gold dub show up again wendy lee michael mcconaughey and steve kramer in fact wendy lee voices bulmer here just like she did in the harmony gold dub 30 years apart they were originally going to dub 52 episodes but stopped at 27 and then it was just cancelled after that those asian countries just decided to air the funimation dub while the dub is okay for the most part a lot of people seem to have a problem with lex lang's performance as goku which yeah is pretty bad lord beerus you don't honestly think a game is a fair way to decide the fate of an entire planet do you kind of i didn't think you'd be eager to fight me again after the way our last battle ended yeah that is a tough call if i'm honest with myself i don't think there's any way i could ever beat you it's over eight thousand not nine thousand now we all know the famous line it's over nine thousand that brian drummond screams out in the ocean dub of dragon ball z in the original japanese it was actually over 000 and that line was kept the same in pretty much all of the other dubs except the english dub apparently it's over 9 000 fit the mouth flaps more also it's over 9000 has still got to be more accurate than whatever the hell they're saying in the russian dub all right folks now we're going down to the third level the speedy dub the speedy dub is an english dub produced in malaysia by a company called speedy video distributors sandaran originally they had a deal with saban to distribute the ocean dub in that country however funimation eventually nullified that contract so to get around this they imported some low quality footage of the latin america dub from mexico and decided to dub over it themselves into english however they did an absolutely terrible job of this dub it is by far the worst english dubber dragon ball out there you can also tell the people acting in this derb aren't even voice actors due to their incredibly robotic and monotone performance and you can tell they took one look at the script and they didn't even realize what they were supposed to be saying so yeah this is without question the worst english dubber dragon ball out there although saying that it is worth checking out it's definitely one of those so bad it's good things toriyama hated drawing goku's tail this is related to a question a lot of people have for why the saiyans just don't seem to have tails anymore but more specifically it focuses on goku and toriyama's reasoning for getting rid of goku's tail it turns out he didn't hate drawing goku's tail but he just found the whole idea of it annoying as he explains here it's just that i'm always thinking about how things are supposed to work so it was a real pain to figure out how he put his pants on or stuff like that that's what always bugged me most is there a hole in the pants does he put his tail through first and then put the pants on so that made me just want to get rid of the damn thing which i did in the end so yeah he didn't hate drawing goku's tail it's just he just couldn't figure out how he was supposed to droid over goku's pants kind of a weird reason to get rid of tails altogether but hey it's his series so piccolo is toriyama's favorite pretty simple one this when he was asked who his favorites were he said goku was his second favorite and that piccolo was his favorite he said that piccolo daimo as in demon king piccolo was his favorite villain out the whole series and that after that piccolo became his favorite overall seems kind of weird that even though piccolo was his favorite piccolo never really got to do any amazing feats like goku did i mean sure he killed all of coolest henchmen in the first cooler movie and he had that awesome fight against android 17 but apart from that krillin breathes through his skin now as you've all probably noticed krillin does not have a nose so a lot of fans are wondering how does he breathe when toriyama was asked he simply said oh he breathes through his skin you know as if krillin was a frog or something this was obviously just a joke from toriyama though in reality it's pretty obvious that krillin can just breathe through his mouth the blue water dub the blue water dub is referring to the english dub of dragon ball and dragon ball gt made by the blue water studios in calgary alberta canada it was produced by ab group yes the same ab group who made the big green dub and westwood media it's been referred to as the budget sister studio of the ocean dub and yeah you can really hear it when you listen to the actual voice acting well sorry to disappoint you but unfortunately i don't have time to train every boy who shows up at my door unless you two can work together so is that who you're supposed to be my rival yeah i'm goku it's not bad or anything but when you hear it you can really tell they couldn't afford the same kind of actors that the ocean group had like the ocean dub the blue water dub was aired in canada and the uk it also had some very weird openings for gt and dragon ball the opening for gt uses the same track as the japanese version but the vocals are out of sync with the actual music so it just sounds really awkward [Music] with all my friends [Music] and as for their opening for dragon ball [Music] [Music] yeah that was just embarrassing the 1995 dragon ball dub this was funimation's first attempt at dubbing dragon ball back in 1995. because they were a new company and didn't have the money to produce the dub themselves they hired a company called blt productions that operates out of vancouver canada it's best known more than anything for its opening theme however like the harmony gold dub this attempt at dubbing dragon ball also failed the army managed to dub the first 13 episodes and the first movie before the series was cancelled due to poor ratings funimation's reasoning for this is because at the time dragon ball was not a good fit for the us market dragon boy dragon boy is a manga made by akira toriyama in 1983 that essentially serves as the prototype to dragon ball the main character is a boy called tang tong who instead of having a tail has dragon wings when he goes on a journey he meets a character called princess of the flower country who design wise basically looks like a cross between bulma and chichi there's also a character called ping yao who looks like a fat version of hua and the dragon jewel which is basically a miniature version of shenron and just like dragon ball the manga is based off of the chinese story journey to the west the manga only ran for two chapters from august 1983 to october 1983. it's pretty funny to know that akira toriyama had no idea at the time that the concept he came up with here would eventually go on to become one of the most successful mangas of all time the adventures of tong poo the adventures of tong poo was a one-shot manga made by akira toriyama in november 1983. just like dragon boy this is basically a prototype to dragon ball however unlike dragon boy this one actually foreshadows what would happen in dragon ball when we learn about goku's backstory for example tong poo is actually an alien from a planet called planet 12 who was sent to earth to investigate the planet and naturally there's a bomber prototype as well named plamo and she looks a lot more like bulma than the princess from dragon boy does in fact the first thing she does when she meets tong poo is trying to shoot him just like bomber did to goku toriyama clearly knew he was onto something with dragon boying the adventure of tom poo since they both came out in the same year i'm sure after he was finished with tong poo he was like hmm what would happen if i combined this with dragon boy and we all know what happened next don't we okay folks we're halfway there now down to the fourth level the original plan to eradicate the saiyan special i'm sure a lot of you have heard of the plan to eradicate the super saiyan's ovary that was released in 2010 alongside raging blast 2. but this is actually a remake of an rva made in 1993 called dragon ball z side story planned to eradicate the saiyans it was only released in japan and was actually made to coincide with the super famicon game of the same name the plot is that dr raichi a scientist and the only surviving member of the tuffle race has been hiding out on the dark planet and is planning to eradicate the last remaining saiyans he sends devices to earth that release a substance called destroying gas which can apparently destroy all life on the planet goku gohan vegeta trunks and piccolo all rush to destroy the devices but standing in their way is frieza cooler turles and lord slug now obviously all of these characters at this point were dead and it's revealed that dr raichi was using an android called hachihyak which is powered by the hatred of the tuffles it's also revealed that dr raichi himself is also a ghost hachikak ends up being too strong for the group to take on but eventually goku gohan trunks and vegeta all combine their powers together to destroy him for whatever reason this special has never been released outside of japan probably because the game it came out with was never released outside of japan either dragon ball fire safety and traffic safety psas this is referring to two rvas made in june 1988 called goku's fire brigade and goku's traffic safety as you can imagine these were made to teach kids not to play around with matches or fireworks and also to switch off gas appliances and put out cigarettes before going to bed of course the fire brigade in this ova is made up of goku krillin yamcha and master roshi goku's traffic safety is obviously to teach kids how to cross the road properly except unlike in the fire brigade psa where goku is the one who teaches these two kids about the dangers of fire it's actually goku who learns a lesson in this one he's repeatedly told by this girl and this traffic safety lady who okay that's just launch that's just good launch drawn with blonde hair instead of blue hair it's worth noting that goku is actually kind of a jerk in this psa when he's on his way to palmer's birthday and he knocks this tiger guy off at this log and then asks where west city is and then the guy tells goku he just leaves the guy to fall to his death and when he's crossing the road he nearly causes several cars to crash and doesn't even seem to care about it and then when he finally does get to bulma's birthday everyone else who's been waiting for him to get there so they could start eating ends up going hungry because goku just eats everything the second he gets there so yeah he kind of deserves it when everyone else just beats him up the dbz telephone game the terebico or the cnc as it was known in the us was a vhs game console it was shaped like a toy phone which you connect to your tv's audio output jack there were four buttons on it colored red blue green and yellow and the players would receive calls from the characters in the game asking them questions which the player would then answer using one of the four buttons on the phone in 1992 bandai released a dragon ball game for the system called dragon ball z gather together goku's world it was fully animated by toei animation and all of the voice actors reprised their role for the characters in the game the gameplay for this game if you can really call it gameplay is weird basically at some points in the animation the characters will stop and call the player on the phone and when this happens it's kind of awkward because whoever's holding the phone on screen just stands there staring at you until you answer the phone basically the story is goku gohan trunks krillin and bulma go in the time machine to visit the past and it's basically a bunch of reused clips from dragon ball the one scene that everyone remembers from this is when goku actually goes into the past and meets himself as a kid and nearly causes a time paradox another notable thing about this video is that it's the very first time that we see perfect cell and he's a bit of a weakling in this video all it takes to get rid of him is just goku punching him in the face people have said that this ova is only for absolute completionists when it comes to dragon ball and yeah i can see why it's really not that exciting and honestly i can see why this type of game never really caught on 17 and 18's genitals are the reason why cell can make cell juniors now obviously this is just a fan theory apparently the reason android 17 and android 18 are male and female was no accident it was a purposeful design choice so that when cell absorbs them he'd be able to make copies of himself aka the cell juniors okay the first problem in that theory is that dr gero didn't make android 17 android 18 male and female because they were originally human they were male and female anyway and also their siblings so the thoughts of cell mixing their dna together to make cell juniors is kind of disgusting and most people who read the theory seem to believe that it's actually piccolo's dna that allowed cell to reproduce namekians reproduce asexually after all although in their cases they actually produce eggs not live offspring so it still doesn't completely explain how cell was able to just spit out live versions of himself like that but yeah overall i'd say the main reason he's able to do it is because of piccolo's dna ford commercials in 2015 ford decided to use dragon ball to advertise the ford focus they produced two commercials and even got the funimation voice actors in to do the lines the first one is krillin making three wishes to perunga for three different cars one with a good sound system one with a rear view camera and one with a big gas tank and then perunga tells him he can get all three of those things in the ford focus so naturally he just gives them a ford focus and then he goes away so basically he's supposed to grand three wishes but he technically only granted one and the second one is just goaltending trunks fusing into a ford focus i get what ford was going for here you know trying to get anime fans to buy their cars but these commercials to me they're just not funny they're just cringy and awkward kind of like me except i don't have a marketing team or a dubbing company behind me do i the ocean dub after the freezer saga if you watch dragon ball z in canada or the uk in the early 2000's then you'll remember that during the freezer saga all of a sudden all the voices changed to the funimation dub yeah you'd be watching one episode and then the next episode everyone sounds completely different and honestly they didn't sound as good because at that point funimation really hadn't found their feet when it came to dubbing after the garlic junior saga all of a sudden it was the ocean dub again although goku and gohan would be recast at some point in the cell saga goku who was at that point voiced by peter calamis would be switched over to kirby murrow my favorite english voice that's for goku god rest his soul and gohan's voice actress saffron henderson would be replaced in the same episode by jillian michaels other than that it was pretty much business as usual we got all the same voice actors back and still gave great performances come on scott mcneal brian drummond i take them over chris sabbat any day but yeah the ocean dub came back right at the start of the android saga and they stuck with dragon ball z until the series ended okay folks we're down to the fifth and penultimate level now dragon ball fight son goku win son goku this is an unofficial live-action dragon ball movie made in korea in 1990 it was produced by an animation studio called daiwan who actually did work with toei animation in the 1970s and 1980s despite it being unlicensed and clearly very low budget it's actually considered to be the most faithful of the three live-action dragon ball movies that have been made saying that though it's clear that the people behind this movie really didn't have the resources to make a really good dragon ball movie oolong is quite literally just a normal sized guy wearing a chinese soldier uniform and a giant oolong head hua is just a plushie kamehaus is a cardboard cutout yeah i know it was low budget but they couldn't at least get a to play oolong and look at goku's hair that doesn't resemble what his hair looks like in the anime at all in fact it looks like some kind of weird early version of heihachi mishima's hair also despite the fact that this movie is clearly based on the original dragon ball series nappa is in this movie and poi smokes and oolong can do the kamehameha yes so in case you couldn't tell this movie makes zero sense yet at the same time i'd say it definitely falls under the so bad it's good category it's definitely a lot of fun to watch and at the very least you can tell the filmmaker's heart was there they definitely put a lot of effort into it and that's what really matters the solar entertainment dub this is one of two english dubs produced in the philippines in the 1990s but it's safe to say that this one out of all the english dubs is by far the most obscure apart from the fact that it was apparently officially licensed by toei we know almost nothing about this dub we have no idea when exactly it came out we have no idea who the voice actors are it's like everything about this dub is just a mystery as far as we know they only dubbed two movies broly second coming and bio broly which they combined into one and called it dragon ball z the movie the voice setting is uh i mean trunks sounds okay i guess um mr satan although he sounds like a bit of an idiot sounds accurate for the most part gohan sounds okay goten sounds mentally challenged like even more mentally challenged than he sounds in the funimation dub well collecting dragon balls was easier than we expected wasn't it and the woman voicing vidal and android 18 she hurt my ears oh they're leaving me hey wait for me wait up hey mr satan was talking to me first where are your manners both of you i'll honestly go as far to say that this performance for 18 is possibly the worst performance in any of the english dubs the android 18 in the speedy dub sounds better than the one in the solar entertainment dub dragon ball the magic begins this is the other unofficial live-action movie made in the 90s this time coming out of taiwan it's a remake of the first dragon ball movie the curse of the blood rubies because this movie is unofficial all of the characters names have been changed goku is now monkey boy bulma is sito oolong is piggy yamcha is westwood roshi is turtleman but guess what they call grandpa gohan sparkle unlike fights on goku wins on goku though this movie actually got remastered and also had an english dub and you can just tell that this one had a much higher budget than the other movie but again it's unofficial toei does not recognize this movie how sad is it that toei pretty much has to acknowledge that dragon ball evolution was made with their consent yet at the same time they have to completely ignore these two movies which are actually closer to the original source material despite not being officially licensed damn shame the portuguese dub of dragon ball z the portuguese dub of dragon ball z was produced between 1995 and 1999 and it can best be described as a semi-serious semi-gag dub because of complaints from parents saying that the show was too violent around the saiyan saga they decided to insert jokes and pop culture references the thing i'm most familiar about with this dub though is dodoria and his beautiful singing voice [Music] and captain ginyu for whatever reason spoke like a lady he was he was still voiced by a man but for whatever reason he was talking in a falsetto voice anytime there was a change in voice actors the characters would break the fourth wall and acknowledge that their voice had changed apparently one time vegeta said i'm so mad my voice has changed again overall it sounds like it was actually genuinely funny and didn't try too hard to be funny unlike the funimation dub which tries way too hard to be funny kenji yamamoto's music kenji yamamoto was a composer who was best known for his work on the dragon ball video game series though it also produced music for some of the dragon ball movies as well a lot of us heard his music in the original budokai games and we were like wow that music sounds great you won't know why it sounded so great because most of it was plagiarized in 2011 toei publicly acknowledged that most of what he'd done was copyright infringing there's a list of the music that he plagiarized in jesus i mean did he really think that people wouldn't realize that he'd ripped off iron man by black sabbath [Music] i mean that's a pretty well known band there kenji pretty sure someone's gonna realize that you copied them he's also copied led [Applause] zeppelin he's plagiarized pink floyd he's plagiarized journey and he's plagiarized strativarius twice of all the bands for him to plagiarize more than once i wasn't expecting it to be stradivarius i mean they're popular but they're not huge like pink floyd black sabbath led zeppelin and journey needless to say after he was fired by toei he hasn't been able to get any work since then because well no one wants to work with a thief do they dbz's alternate ending in the early 2000s akira toriyama re-released the dragon ball manga as the kanzenman or perfect edition release it featured new art and compressed the story from 42 volumes to 34. aside from a few story tweaks he also made a change to the ending in this alternate ending goku hands over the nimbus cloud to ube which is his way of officially passing the torch to him and in the original ending where toriyama said that this really was the end of the road this version has taken that message away and instead replaces it with a scene of vegeta saying that he was one day going to surpass goku yes i couldn't really find much information on this one unfortunately it's just funny to me how goku really seemed to believe in ube and then ube ended up really not being all that effective the creative products dub this is the other english dub produced in the philippines in the 1990s creative products were actually the very first company to dub dragon ball z into english though they only dubbed the first 35 episodes before dubbing the original dragon ball anime into english in its entirety in 1996 they dubbed the two cooler movies coolest revenge and the return of cooler and combined it into a single movie called dragon ball z the greatest rivals it was released theatrically and also got a very limited vhs release in the philippines honestly everyone in this dub sounds pretty good for the most part except piccolo piccolo sounds awful go ahead go let me handle this so that's what it is looks like a pile of junk to me i honestly don't know what the hell they were going for here i guess they thought piccolo needed to sound like gilbert godfreed fortunately this dub does have a cast list so i know who to blame so screw you raymond boyco also this dub actually featured what was probably the very first english version of charla hedchala sung by gino padilla he may be a little flat but he does give a pretty solid performance here by the way if you want to watch this dub i recommend checking it out on archive.org someone's remastered it into hd and it honestly looks great way better than these compressed to hell avi versions that were floating around the internet for years okay folks we're down to the last level now and the stuff we're about to look at now is apparently very obscure the ocean dub of dragon ball z kai some lost media for you here folks between 2010 and 2014 the ocean dub studios apparently produced their own english dub for dragon ball z kai not much is known about this dub as to this day it's never been aired we know it exists because kirby murrow mentioned that he'd auditioned to play goku in the dub paul dobson another ocean voice actor also mentioned it brendan hunter who played tien and ube in the blue waterdubs also mentioned it and scott mcneal even went as far to say that they'd finished dubbing it they just hadn't done the final chapters yet ryan drummond later said that recording had been completed but he had no idea what happened to the dub and that he's never seen it apparently right now it's been kept in towie animation usa's archives and they're just waiting for a network who'd be willing to license it considering how long it's been since kai ended it seems pretty unlikely that we'll ever see this dub of the series the world of dragon ball z the world of dragon ball z is an ova produced in 2000 by funimation it basically serves as a recap of the series from the emperor pilaf saga of dragon ball all the way up until the beginning of the android saga what's interesting about this rva is at the time funimation had only dubbed the frieza saga which means for everything before then they had to use footage from the blt and ocean dubs so this to my knowledge is the only time all of those dubs have been combined into one official video and i gotta admit it's weird hearing chris sabbat narrating over ocean dub footage no time was wasted as a plan was hatched to recover their friends who were lost in battle by using the dragon balls of planet namek to bring them back the korean snes commercial at some point in the early 90s these strange animated commercials were made to promote the super nintendo in south korea or the hyundai super convoy as it was called over there now while i'm sure nintendo gave them permission to change the name of the console and to make this commercial i have a hard time believing that they were able to officially license any of the characters who appear in this commercial i mean we got buster bunny from tiny toons we've got michelangelo from teenage mutant ninja turtles we've got chun li and ryu from street fighter and of course we've got goku and a very tall krillin as well and he's even taller than bowser in fact that's all i can really say about this commercial there's no other information about it all i can say is i'm honestly surprised that none of the copyright holders sued this company gohan's age was changed to four years old in the beginning of z when gohan first introduced himself to bulma and the others in chapter 196 of dragon ball he said he was three years old however in the title page of the very next chapter gohan introduced himself to the readers as four years old i don't know why akira toriyama changed it it can't have been a mistake since gohan clearly held up three fingers in the last chapter i guess maybe toriyama decided that three years old was too young so he decided to age gohan up by a year although four is still pretty young that's barely out of being a toddler the anime also kept it as four years old but for some reason in the original funimation dub when bomber asks gohan how old he is he says four and a half instead of four years old hey gohan how old are you um uh four and a half i guess six extra months makes all the difference doesn't it the frontier enterprise is dub frontier enterprises was a dubbing company based out of japan that specialized in dubbing japanese products into english it was most active during the 1970s and the 1980s apparently one of the films they dubbed was dragon ball cursed the blood rubies in 1988. now the only quote evidence we have of this dub is information from one of the company's voice actors dick neeskins in an interview with vantage point interviews he briefly mentioned that he voiced in dragon ball but incorrectly referred to it as dragon ball z this was the first time anyone had ever heard of this frontiers enterprises dub when lost media wiki user ekkov fox asked him for any more information about the dub neeskin said that he couldn't remember anything about it because it's been so long he also claimed that he'd had a script for the dub at his home at one point but must have thrown it away when he was moving most of frontiers enterprises dubs were shown on airline flights so it's possible their dub for curse of the blood rubies may have been shown on plane flights but this also means they wouldn't have been commercially available for purchase if this dub does indeed exist then it's probably sitting somewhere in toway animations archives right now and if this is the case then i very much doubt that they have any intention of releasing it so it seems like this is one piece of media that really is going to be lost forever toriyama does not really think that goku is a good guy when dragon ball z ended akira toriyama stated that he was unhappy with goku's portrayal in the anime he never intended for goku to be a righteous pure-hearted hero he'd actually intended for goku to be a self-centered and selfish man who only cared about fighting he didn't fight for others he only fought for his own enjoyment the reason why he does so many questionable things throughout the series and endangers the lives of his family and friends is because he puts himself before them that's how akira toriyama wanted goku to be portrayed in other words goku was never meant to be a good person which kinda makes you wonder why goku was able to ride the flying nimbus when only someone who's pure-hearted is able to ride it of course one can make the argument about goku being a terrible father but but that one's been beaten to death so much at this point that's just not funny anymore it's weird isn't it we all know goku as this goofy lovable guy but toriyama never wanted us to see him that way he wanted us to see him as a jerk it's been over 20 years since toriyama said all that so chances are his opinion has probably changed by now since obviously goku is still the same as he's always been in the anime so obviously he's not going to convince anyone now that goku's a jerk is he but just imagine if goku was like that in the anime he'd almost be more like vegeta in a way wouldn't he let that sink in and with that folks that is the end of the dragon ball iceberg as i said there was some stuff i was already aware of like all the different dubs that were listed on here since i'd actually made a video about all the dubs a while back but there was plenty of stuff on here that i wasn't aware of namely all the different opinions and things that toriyama said about various characters listed on here that stuff about dragon boy and the avengers at tong poo was actually pretty interesting i had no idea that those two stories were how dragon ball originally started out then of course there was those weird weird-ass momia seaweed commercials that i don't need to see again that animation is just gross i don't really have a clever or funny outro for this video planned folks so um i'm just gonna say i hope you enjoyed the video please like
