hey everybody coming at you live from the gear room now I have very limited free time nowadays and what's bad is often times during this time of year it's it coincides with deer hunting season and I don't like to be in the woods bothering or interfering in with the deer hunters and then you've got times like this where I only have like one day off or one day furry and it's raining and been raining for three days and rain just doesn't make good videos okay so enough of the chitchat now I love do-it-yourself product of projects I like cheap projects and then sometimes I like projects that can make things a little bit better things that you just can't buy all right now sleeping pads let's talk about them if you've got just a typical sleeping pad what is alright say it's a foam pad what does it do okay the cold ground when you're laying on the ground it sucks the heat out of your body so what does this do this is insulation all right this insulates you from the ground okay all right that's pretty clear you have that's a foam pad they're not real expensive and then you have things like the self inflating mats if you want to buy like a real expensive one this is the climate static v recon and this is insulated and this was about it maybe 60 bucks now but I think I paid 80 for it when I bought it but what does this do alright this thing it insulates you from the ground correct okay now it was $80 now now that we have that clear how can you make something better you could certainly try to make something cheaper by a do-it-yourself but those only have the qualities of insulation what if you wanted to have the qualities of reflectivity all right then you're talking about a layered mat and I've been trying to collect their what I think is right things for a while Niall and I finally collected everything up but the thing about my lore is its reflective and the closer you get it to your body the more it reflects your body heat back but if you touch it you can sweat in no time so the closer you get it the better off you are so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna make a layered sleep pad gonna be an experiment and if it works I think finally I've got enough material here that I can make at least two possibly three so if it works for me I'll make another one for me but I'm gonna make this and I'm gonna see how well it was not to mention the fact that it's gonna be really cheap much cheaper than 80 bucks so let's look at the materials I got into how I plan on doing it the actual basis for this will naturally be mylar and you can buy like you can the largest they sell the mylar blankets but the largest amount of my lawyer you can get is these a little survival tube tents so what I've done is from previous projects I have a couple of mylar sleeping bags that I have known all right and I thought to myself I thought well I'm gonna cut that up but then I thought no I'm not gonna cut it up I'm gonna use it just like it is because it's gonna be double life what's better than one layer of my large two lawyers now over here I have behind a furniture store I found about 12 sheets of this foam packing and it's a little less than 1/4 inch thick which is great it's just the right size so what I'm gonna be doing is I'm only cutting this stuff up using it all right and I think what I'm gonna do is the layers I'll have them the mylar underneath this and then they uh sent in some cloth that way the mylar will be sandwiched in between and if my hate goes through this insulated material it'll reflect back through the other material all right multi-layered thing and then I managed to latch ahold of a huge role of woodland camo fifty/fifty it's a 50% cotton 50% polyester very cold stuff I was looking for some large material to do this out of and I just sort of looked up and got the whittle of woodland camo it's a very very heavy roll is 60 inches wide and there's a lot on it Oh in the future I might figure I had a waterproof that stuff so I can make some other things out of it so now that you know the materials that I've got what we're going to do is I'm going to start cutting and sewing and we're gonna see if we can piece this thing together all right step one we're gonna lay out the mylar sleeping bag okay and then you want to measure it and what you want to do is you want to cut your first foam pad the size that will slip inside it I've got this pre-cut now this one piece had a cut in it down the middle so I had to take that up I figure if anyone's cut the one that goes inside it you'd be the best one all right this is gonna take a while to feed that in so I'm gonna cut the camera back on that Ridge all right that took quite a bit of bumbling around but I had managed to get the pad inside here so what I'm looking at now what's that encapsulated oh I'm gonna take some more tape and I'm gonna tape up this end right here so once that's completely encapsulated then I'm gonna have a layer on top that I have cut and then I'm gonna have another layer on bottom so it's gonna be it's gonna be foam scoot back a little bit it's gonna be foam my lower foam mylar foam and it's gonna be inside a cloth sack all right so let's take this up and get this sitting on the cloth so we can start cutting the cloth reflective tell you cold weather tape using the good school I think you can buy this like it hating their stores they sell like things for repairing all right so now we got a bag all sealed up in there let's lay it on some cloths all right this thing doing now beware I've got a nice bag a nice encapsulated bag here with the foam on the top of the bottle so that's gonna be the initial pad right no part of the mylar will be touching my body but it will be replaced and this is that uh I cut me off a nice piece of this woodland camo here I'm gonna lay it out this way so that you can see it make that awesome it's a piece of tape back here for some reason all right now let's flip it over upside down and I'll show you what I'm gonna do because it's got to be sewed not wait a minute I was right flip it back over I'm just bumbling around I'm excited about doing this because I've been I've been wanting to do it forever but I've just been kind of putting it off there's been a nice steady drizzle after all right so we take the bacon bless like this somewhere around here and then what we're gonna do is I'm all this over slowly pull that over cuz now it's gonna be a bag I'm gonna make it inside out alright so what I'm gonna do now is I'm gonna so I'm gonna cut off moving the camera one hand I'm gonna cut off this this excessive right here alright and then I'm gonna sew all the way down the side and then I'm also across the end and then I'm gonna turn the bag inside out slide the padding in and then sew across the end if that makes sense it's actually a very simple project now instead of cutting this off right here this excessive the successive part right here I've got it folded over right here just like this and so what I believe I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take this down just like this and what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna so you all know take them this is how I'm gonna get a pretty good fit without having to go through a bunch of fancy measuring and stuff what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take this down and then I'm gonna sew down through here right along this edge of this tape just like this and then I'm gonna slide the mat back in it and then uh well you know something I think about it I may just feed I may put the sewing machine in the floor and just sew right up against here that way I'll know that it'll be reasonably tight fit yeah that's exactly what I'm gonna do just set it in the floor and sew it I'm gonna take this up and then I got to go to work and I will pick back up on this tomorrow I'll put the sewing machine in the floor and we'll sew it and I'll show you what it looks like that forward and back in is locking in the stitch keep it from going undone right there son the bags turned inside out and then I have all along this line here some so the next step is I'm going to trim them all that excessive off and then pull the pad out and turn the bag inside out see now that I've got it turned inside out I got a nice thing and that's hidden same on the England and down the side all right I got it laid out flat right there so now what we're going to do is we're going to slide the foam backing and yes it's like a giant pillow case one last look before we put this in we got foam pad mylar Pompeii it in the middle mylar phone patients so now that that's done all I get a denial just fold this fold it over and then try to seal that so that edge this will be the only one that you can actually see the same it didn't he'll be ready to test [Music] all right so I'm outside and I could not like to test it it's 46 degrees Fahrenheit all right and when I'm out here is I'm out here I'm gonna talk and I have what a tip will typically wear when I sleep okay least of all again polypropylene undershirt with the t-shirt wool socks and pants line what I'm gonna do is I'm relying on this I'm all lay on this $80 insulated climate static V and I'm awake here for about an hour all right and I'm gonna see how I feel and then I'm gonna switch over to my home eight and to make it fair instead of using the sleeping bag I'm gonna use it a down blanket on top of me in a snug pack jungle blanket or I may just start out with one to see how food you'll also have this one singing on camera I think I'm just gonna start with this belong here I may use that over my lawyer all right that's pretty good all right I'm a light like that I picked you back on in about one hour and tell you how I feel alright that was around about an hour and I would not say my back didn't get cold I'm definitely not hot not warm I probably could have put the other blanket on but I didn't I just want to use one blanket so I can kind of get a idea if the ground was pulling anything out of it because right now I just have what I typically have on a trip which is a juster cheap tarp for the ground and then you know depending on how cold it is I'll have a blanket but most of the time I'm in a bag but most of the time I'll just have a blanket of some kind sometimes a damn blanket most of the time I'll carry two of these snug pack jungle blankets because I love them so much so this thing it does work it's $80 worth of value I think maybe there's 60 now but I wasn't hot I wasn't cold so I guess it did its job now this is insulated like I said to me at the beginning of the video what I'm shooting for is insulation and reflectivity so what I'm gonna do sit bundled up it turned out pretty nice I think I got camera just enough all right I went ahead and crank the camera on backup I'm eventually gonna make a stuff sack for this sign but for now I just put to stress this thing was it's a little bulky but it was just a little over 1 pound which is incredible and now that I'm thinking about it I should put a zipper on one end to velcro that way it's dirty I can just clean it so for now I guess I could I can bust these stitches and pull it I want to see if the idea what I think this is a little bit bigger than mine yes a sign length but it's it's about three maybe two to three inches longer clean water hole lay down I didn't let's say how I feel here in the wall I am so excited this is so awesome I think this is the best thing I've ever made I didn't even go in our it wouldn't even hit five to ten minutes and I lay down and I could actually feel my back getting hot if you can ever scrounge up the stuff to be off one of these things you've got to build it I just I couldn't believe it anywhere that my body was touching this I could literally feel hate it's it's amazing it's mind-boggling I just I'm so happy I can't wait to get after this winter whenever I actually get a real day off from Walker in and I can get out and I can try to test this thing for real and when it gets really cold I think you're supposed to get down to 29 overnight pretty soon and I just I can't believe it I cannot believe it my back actually felt hot I am I am dumbfounded I am shocked I am I am flabbergasted this is so awesome remember foam My Lord my lord oh the phone never touches my back so I can't spoil you and yet it's only about a quarter of an inch of wire or less this is just oh I love this sign I love it I got it being working by the error but I think I'm gonna sit my up let's set my timer and take about 30 minutes night Oh Oh me that is so awesome I love it I love it alright so I just I'm dumbfounded I can't believe this if you ever if you ever get a chance to do a project like this make it make it it's worth it's worth the effort and this was just a idea that popped in my head because I you know you had all the materials alright enough rambling I keep you long enough learn how to sew make stuff you don't have to buy everything if you can dream it try to make it and I shall see you the next one
