new york city is more than just manhattan there are four other boroughs worth exploring here but how are they different from each other as a local who's lived in four of the boroughs in this video i'm gonna share what makes each borough unique including which is the most rich borough and which is the most dangerous p.s it is not the bronx but before i get into that let's hear from some natives from each of the boroughs on what they think about it we're always on the go it's never a quiet moment no matter what point of the day it is you have the serene the quiet the calm as well as you know the nightlife in the city right down you know right over the water what makes queens unique is its diversity and its food i think it's so special about the bronx resiliency and culture i think those two things you know amazing museums amazing parks awesome food awesome bars like they said each borough has their own unique flavor that makes them special and that's really why you should explore them all so with that let's get into the unfiltered truths on the differences between the burrows but before i get into the raw and gritty details if you like this type of content give this video a like and subscribe so i know to make more videos like this now let's start in the bronx [Music] the bronx this is one of my favorite burrows what is the bronx known for well it is the birthplace of hip-hop which makes it pretty special most people associate the bronx with yankee stadium the bronx is also home to the real little italy little italy in manhattan has really become touristy over the years if you want some authentic italian food head up to the bronx for that because it is the best in the city by far it also has pelham bay park which is three times the size of central park regarding culture the bronx is really known for their italian and hispanic latin communities you'll have some of the best bars and restaurants that are italian or hispanic latin origin here we come back from a lot the bronx is like one of the more poverty hit burrows that we have you know like and it's also you know like the last one to be gentrified like we're still not even gentrified yet coming back from all the things we've come back from like the fires that used to happen a lot in the bronx we still you know burst things out of that the bronx is really known for their accent they have a very heavy new york accent that has a more stereotypical italian and spanish emphasis when i was growing up i talked like this i was like very hi how are you what do you want i have my hoops on and i was like i'm talking to you or i'm talking to her she's a whole lot hi i'm opal a fashion blogger in new york city and you can find my work at vocalbyopal.com or follow me on instagram at opal by opal we have a very colorful and vibrant style um definitely more street style though where you'll find sneakerheads they love their jordans we're talking hoodies and we're talking caps and even like big puffer jackets oversized jackets ripped jeans and all of it when you think of street style supreme you will find a lot of those influences over in the bronx now let's get into those demographics this bureau has by far the largest hispanic or latin population at 56 it also has 9 caucasian 29 black and 4 asian for education 74 graduate from high school and 20 have a bachelor's degree or higher let's get into the income details the median household income here is significantly lower than the other boroughs at 41 000 a year the median rent is only 1 212 it's a steal compared to the other boroughs the most well-known and popular things to do in the bronx go to the bronx zoo the new york botanical garden or yankee stadium of course but my personal favorite is wave hill house it's really beautiful i have two guides on the bronx with 16 things to do there that i highly recommend so check those out when you're visiting let's get into safety crime is relatively high in the bronx compared to the other boroughs but what might surprise you is it is not the most dangerous burrow it is actually the second most high crime borough so despite its crime the bronx is relatively safe and it really depends on what neighborhood you go to what makes the bronx unique for architecture and landscape is that it is the only borough that is connected to the mainland of new york state [Music] manhattan what is manhattan known for well tourist attractions most of the tourist attractions are in manhattan it also has most of the sightseeing in the city that is well known but the other boroughs have really cool sightseeing as well it's just not as well known just seeing just these eccentric personalities from entertainers to painters to the photographers and i love how it's just a melting pot full of people and it's so special that we even have our own drink i mean it's one of a kind and it's a home for everybody it's also known for being expensive manhattan is by far the most expensive of all of the other boroughs so if you're looking to save money i would really recommend going to the other boroughs so what are the demographics of manhattan 47 white 12 black 12 percent asian and 26 percent hispanic 88 have graduated from high school and 62 have a bachelor's degree or higher of course with that high level of education you're gonna have some crazy numbers with income and that is the biggest difference with manhattan is the income the median household income here is 93 000 a year which is by far the highest of all the boroughs and the median amount for rent that people pay is 29.90 now this is significantly lower than it was before the pandemic the pandemic brought down the number tremendously it's actually the lowest it's been in nearly a decade so now is the time to move to manhattan if you're interested in doing that so let's get into architecture and landscape one of the things that makes manhattan unique is it has the most amount of skyscrapers out of all of the other burrows and when you look at manhattan they're skyscrapers on the lower part and in the middle part the other parts are not as many skyscrapers and that's because they were originally marshland so you only can build skyscrapers on land that's really stable lower manhattan has this really strong bedrock which skyscrapers do really well on greenwich village area and the east village it's all marshlands so skyscrapers would actually sink into the ground if they were built there and that's why they don't they don't have any skyscrapers there if i have to give like one thing that you cannot miss here i would say doing a classic harbor line cruise this is my favorite thing to do in the city uh you can get on the boat right near chelsea piers it's a beautiful 1920s style yacht and it sails all around the city you can get some champagne you can do some wine and cheese tasting it is like such a great experience so highly recommend that i think it might just be the most grown up boro of them all after all it is the business capital of the world so of course you'll find business attire structured jacket lasers trench coats you will definitely find that all black attire that people usually associate with new york city fashion you also have so many different neighborhoods and it really depends on where you are sometimes if you're uptown you'll get a little bit more stylish high fashion looks and if you're downtown let's say the lower east side it's a little bit more casual let's get into the history so manhattan's namesake comes from the lenape native american tribe who named the island manhatta in 1626 peter minou a dutchman actually bought manhatta from the native americans for around 20 now the native americans didn't understand the concept of land ownership so they really thought peter was kind of a fool for selling them something that no one can own i mean think about it like this if someone came up to you and said hey i want to buy the air you're breathing for 200 bucks would you be like uh sure because you can't buy air in fact the british took over and that is when new york officially became known as new york the new york we know today but things changed again and in 1776 that is when the revolutionary war started between the british and the americans now the british didn't officially leave until 1783 and that is officially when the americans took over there is a lot to cover on the history and i really can't get into all of it in this video otherwise it would be like hours long so i do recommend taking my secrets of new york tour where you'll be taught the full history of the beginnings of manhattan in new york city so that will be linked below check it out now let's talk about safety something people are always curious about the upper west side is the most safe part of manhattan and the least safe part of manhattan is midtown in fact midtown has more crimes reported than most areas in new york city as a whole including all of the boroughs don't worry though most of the crimes are not major by far manhattan is the most fast pace of all of the boroughs people walk fast here people talk fast here it's just known for the fast-paced lifestyle it is also i would say the least family friendly of all of the boroughs and not a lot of families live in manhattan unless they're extremely wealthy and that's manhattan for you now let's get to the next borough queens is known as the world's borough because they are the most culturally diverse regarding culture what i love about queens is it is the most friendly burrow of them all which is why so many people with families end up moving here it's part of the reason why louie and i live here you can find a little bit of everything in queens and that's why i think it's so unique in queens you'll find an array of different cultures so it's a little bit more laid back you'll find just earthy tones blacks grays blues people will be wearing athleisure athletic wear puffer jackets and the sneakers just regular boots combat boots they're not as experimental with their style as let's say brooklyn i would describe queens as a little bit more contemporary and laid back this is the most diverse borough of all of the boroughs which makes the demographics pretty spread out demographic wise it is 24 white 17 percent black 26 asian and 28 percent hispanic 83 of the people that live here graduated from high school and 33 graduated with a bachelor's degree or higher making this borough the third richest borough of all five boroughs the median household income here is about 73 000 a year and the median rent here is about 1500 so it's one of the cheaper boroughs to live in there are so many things to do here in queens um the most notable though is really food because queens is the most diverse borough culturally it has some of the best food in the city take a trip along roosevelt avenue where you'll find chinese food and even in different parts of china like sichuan east food hot pot taiwanese food you got hong kong food style japanese korean it's basically like a foodies paradise my favorite type of food here is greek food we have the largest population of greek people here in queens than any other borough and that makes the greek food absolutely phenomenal if you want to get some good feta head to astoria for more things to do on queens i have two guides on places you can't miss in queens and i have a guide on long island city as well for safety queens is actually a relatively safe bro with low crimes across all categories but the most common crime here is burglary it's still not that crazy though not very common for architecture and landscape the unique thing about queens is it is the largest borough geographically with 108 square miles it's also connected to long island which makes it different from the other boroughs and one thing that stands out about queens is that it has two of new york's three airports here so that's very convenient when you like traveling [Music] staten island what are they known for well sadly they're known as the forgotten borough but you shouldn't forget them they're also the greenest borough because they have the most park land out of every other place in new york city they actually have more than 9 300 acres of parkland there and the thing that staten island is most known for is the staten island ferry which i think is kind of hilarious because it's not really an enjoyable experience compared to the other things you can do on staten island on the topic of culture staten island has a huge italian american population which leads to awesome italian restaurants and bakeries i featured a few of them in my staten island guide so check that out but they also have a large filipino and sri lankan population which is super unique to staten island you won't really see that in other boroughs we have our own music culture and arts culture we have a little bit more grit because we kind of felt like the outsiders of the outcasts so our scene is very cultivated our our arts you know music center it's a more residential community and you'll find a lot of plants a lot of graphic tees and definitely you can't forget those designer purses design your shoes designer jackets designer everything but for the most part they are much more laid back let's get into those demographics it is 59 white 10 black 11 asian and 19 hispanic or latino for education 89 of the people that live here have graduated from high school and about 36 have a bachelor's degree or higher and leads to them being the second richest borough of all the bros right behind manhattan the median household income here is 89 000 a year and the median rent is 1 600 relatively inexpensive to live here compared to brooklyn and manhattan there are tons of things to do in staten island has the most parks out of all of the boroughs it's actually known as the borough of parks and one of my favorites is conference house park for safety state island is actually the safest burrow pretty cool right for architecture and landscape staten island is unique because it's mainly residential so it really doesn't look anything like the other boroughs in any way shape or form you're going to see a lot of houses here i feature them in my two guides on staten island so if you want to learn even more things to do in staten island check those out because it's actually really cool burro for transportation here you need a car if you're going to live in staten island if you're going to visit staten island you're going to need a car about 54 of people commute to work using a car here which is extremely high compared to the other boroughs only 30 of staten islanders use public transportation it's way lower than any other borough so public transportation is not very popular in staten island and i can tell you why because i live there and it's not that great just get a car brooklyn is a very popular borough it's probably the second most featured borough of all the boroughs right after manhattan for tv and movies two common phrases that originated from tv shows and movies in brooklyn is forget about it and how sweet it is they originated from the 1950s tv show the honeymooners which was set in brooklyn and whose characters commonly used those phrases the culture of brooklyn is really known for its hipster vibes and great food scene you can really get anything here from cheesecake to bagels to pizza those are some of the things i would definitely focus on when going to brooklyn because they're phenomenal the coffee culture in the united states started in brooklyn i recommend going to brooklyn roasting co they have really good coffee and it's made in brooklyn which is pretty cool the reason most people love living here or are proud they're from here is because of that underdog number two special feeling of being from a place that is in the shadow of the other place across the river and still succeeding and still being amazing despite that and lastly most people associate new york accents with brooklyn accents but that's not actually a new york manhattan accent it's a brooklyn accent manhattan is a leather jacket brooklyn is definitely the denim jacket you'll find a bunch of hipsters they're all experimental with their styles they're wearing color of all sorts from head to toe they're wearing color you'll find hats of all kinds you'll find sneakerheads if you want patterns brooklyn is the place to be you'll find florals plaids polka dots stripes all of it they also like to join different influences from across the world and across generations so you'll have some 80s style some 50s style and they'll just mix it all in and make it their own brooklyn is definitely where you will find more fashion forward brooklyn let's get into those demographics it is 37 white 30 black 12 percent asian and 19 hispanic for education 83 percent have a high school education and 39 have a bachelor's degree or higher now with that level of education you have a median household income of about 66 000 a year and the median rent here is about 2 599 there are tons of things to do in brooklyn i think brooklyn is probably the second most popular borough after manhattan for attractions my favorite thing to do is go to brooklyn bridge park and have a picnic the view is amazing i also love going to the rooftop bars here my favorites is harriet's rooftop and westlight check those out and also watch my guides on brooklyn i have tons of them now this was a shocker let's talk about the safety because surprisingly brooklyn actually has the highest crime rate of all five boroughs most people assume it's the bronx but it's not the bronx is a close second though for architecture and landscape brooklyn is one of the largest boroughs it's 69 square miles and regarding its architecture they're really known for brown stones and those are the differences between the five boroughs which burrow is your favorite comment below and if you like this video please subscribe watch my other videos on new york city and i will see you next time bye
