I highly recommend seeing the documentary β€œEnjoy Poverty” if you can get your hands on it. It's built upon the premise that poverty β€” in itself β€” is an exploitable resource. And it's not impoverished people getting to exploit it.

Know a few people who did exactly this. Held fundraisers to go to Africa to 'help' people. They were in a guarded compound that was essentially a high class hotel, went out and took photos with the locals, then went on safaris and stuff.

Explains why only rich kids went to volunteer abroad while growing up.

Listen if you really want to help people, you DO NOT feed a multi million dollar industry, and PAY for the opportunity to help people.

You can join a non-profit like the peace corps, or Doctors without borders, or a million other charities.

Don't do construction if you've never done it, it's dangerous and you can ruin buildings. Great lesson from the video about that.

If you're PAYING for the opportunity to help people, it already sounds very scammy to me.

These pay to volunteer organizations need to be sued/legislated out of existence. That's on us people, get organized, make it happen.

Watched the video. This is very true and unfortunate. Most of these programs are outright scams.

The only way to do real good is to donate personally to an orphanage and make sure the funds are used. I had lived in a developing country for several years as an expat and helped to build a playground and a library for an orphanage by relying on my local contacts to do the construction.

Very glad I opted out of an "opportunity" to do this. It was a week where about 1.5 days of that was actual work and they told me upfront that lodging was in a high end hotel. 100%, the church was making money off of it. Nobody anywhere, ever needs or needed whitey to come visit; ever, at all, in the past and future.

Missionaries aren't just colonizers but they're infamous for exactly this behavior in my country. It's disgusting.
