a primary theme of Naruto exists in the hypocrisy of its antagonists each new major foe builds upon the ideology of the last and adds a new perspective to the recurring conflict these battles inform Naruto's worldview and force him to confront his own hypocrisy which then allows him to do the same to his enemies Obito served as a culmination of this theme but that's also the reason why he couldn't be the final boss because he tried to abandon his sense of self he was in theory the perfect tool for someone else to manipulate he had become a near blank canvas for someone else to project their will upon but the source of his internal conflict was his failure to abandon his personal desires he retained his individuality thus he couldn't become a true tool but without an external force influencing his decisions his character wouldn't have worked this is where moderate comes in if Obito was the final form of Naruto's hypocrisy someone who had unknowingly fallen victim to the same principles that plagued the whole shinobi Madara was the response to this theme he wasn't without his own contradictions which I'll elaborate on later but he was able to recognize hypocrisy as an unavoidable facet of the shinobi world obito's offshoot interpretation of the infinite tsukiyomi was a selfish escape from the harshness of reality he had personally been dealt a bad hand and so he made a relatively shallow assumption that the entire world was a living hell that should be rejected I say shallow not because his conclusion was illogical or inconsistent but because he didn't have the same wealth of experience that someone like Madara had Obito may have grown up knowing only war but he was a mere teenager when he forsook the world Madara had lived through a similar childhood of war but he was able to mature and even experience a period of peace as an adult it was only after he saw the flaws of this so-called peace that he deemed the world a lost cause and pursued the infinite tsukiyomi colleano svet annuity she calling a toyota corona o'connor's calling on societal guiding high show up Onizuka citizens I say hey well how much titled Ecotec nourishing us and so I coming Nick shaming of querido Inga calcaneal Kilohana Scott holiday Kim the world hinges on duality and humanity is no exception to this for a society of ninja to function disputes were vital yet the Allied forces wanted peace Naruto advocated love and unity yet even he craved a degree of conflict shown through his intense desire to surpass Sasuke in battle what's more the pursuit of peace repeatedly bred new conflicts Hoshi Rama brought an end to clan warfare with the foundation of Konoha but he also created a new threat in Madara Itachi massacred the Uchiha clan to prevent a coup d'etat that could destroy the village but he also led Sasuke to become a rogue ninja who nearly destroyed the village himself examples like these highlighted a byproduct of this human paradox the willingness to sacrifice one ideal to preserve another to protect the leaf hoshi rama sacrificed his bond with Madara Itachi sacrificed his entire clan bloodshed in the name of peace a world with only winners only peace only love such a thing wasn't realistically attainable in the dualistic reality of shinobi so Madara decided to create a new world in a dream realm these connections could be severed and the human paradox could be neutralized no more duality no more hypocrisy that Madara was a hypocrite didn't directly undermine his core ideals because like I said he operated with this in mind he too was a byproduct of the paradoxical world he had been raised in but he took it upon himself to fix that this is where he and obito differ Obito wanted to recover his past and be with reen so while the infinite tsukuyomi might have also been beneficial to the whole humanity his primary concern was himself what about Madara his family was dead his clan had rejected him his village had rejected him his best friend had rejected him he had no personal connections left the eye of the Moon plan was created not out of a desire to restore what Madara had lost but as a cure for the human paradox in other words he wanted to save the world he would be the one to rise above the rest of humanity like a messiah and guide them into a new world free of duality but just because he had cast off his human connections didn't mean that he was without human I previously said that modaress contradictions didn't undermine the crux of his philosophy but they did serve to facilitate his downfall nevertheless when the sage of six paths first distributed chakra to the populace that chakra was meant to connect people's mental energies and allow them to understand each other without words this concept of ninja shoe was later twisted into ninjutsu we're sad energy was instead projected inward to increase one's own power this desire for power only amplified conflicts and furthered the human paradox because the stronger the power the stronger the desire for conflict modernist saw this dilemma and sought to erase chakra but to actualize his dream he would first have to take all chakra upon himself to lead his chakra free world he required chakra that's the first contradiction albeit a willful one on moderate part his second contradiction ties into the first though this one was to an eighth for moderate to fully grasped his power and desire for more were unmatched so naturally his desire for conflict was equally tremendous now I know what you're thinking didn't matter I want peace yes Madara desired that as well it all loops back to duality if Naruto could simultaneously seek peace and conflict surely moderate could time and time again following his head attends a revival moderates passion for battle took center stage when Kabuto asks if he wanted to go capture nine tails you know a cornerstone of his I of the moon plan mater instead took the opportunity to show off his powers while Obito and ten tails engaged the Allied forces Madara prioritized a battle with hoshi rama but when faced with a mere doppelganger of his rival he took a seat and waited for the real deal to arrive even in his battle with gai he said I'll acknowledge this chakra of yours Madara loves to fight how could he possibly erase that part of himself for the sake of his dream world would he even be moderate at that point [Music] stolen aku Naruto you totally poke another my no he wouldn't his passion for conflict was far too prevalent for him to abandon it entirely [Music] his third and final contradiction was foreshadowed in his backstory though this one was a bit more complicated than the rest for starters muttering hashirama were reincarnates of Indra and Asura the two sons of the sage of six paths they're dynamic directly paralleled that of naruto and sasuke so I think it's best to explore the failings of the former through the failings of the latter when Naruto and Sasuke clashed at the end of part 1 Naruto demanded that Sasuke acknowledge him as an equal but he contradicted himself when he tried to enforce his will on Sasuke you're coming back to the leaf with me and that's final that's not equality that's dominance and so the two failed to compromise similarly during the formation of the leaf village both sides of the conflict saved madara and hashirama demanded send you dominance so once again there was no compromise this cooperation was merely a quieter form of conflict as moderate put it so after witnessing this flawed peace he concluded that true understanding was a fantasy and abandoned the very village he had worked so hard to create he later returned only to wage war against hashirama and this leads me to perhaps the most important detail of modaress characterization his back [Music] [Music] Madara has a complex about people standing behind him something which was undoubtedly the result of his tragic upbringing once his family was gone he was alone with no one he could trust to watch his back no one but hashirama the two managed to rekindle their friendship for a time but when moderate went rogue hoshi rama was forced to betray that trust and literally stab his former friend in the back these two men who had attempted to use their power to foster empathy had now been divided through battle mater a solution was to remove chakra from the picture but the irony of all this is that by starting the war along with Obito he became the threat the world needed to unite under the same shinobi headband he concluded that chakra created only conflict but he failed to realize that fighting was a bond in and of itself this applied not just in the face of a common enemy with the fate of the world at stake but way back in the early days of the series as well when Sasuke first fought Naruto he stated that shinobi of a high enough level could read each other's thoughts through no more than a trade of blows and when the two clashed again after the 5k summit they were able to convey an entire conversation through a single exchange great ninja like Naruto and Sasuke conversed through battle and compromised through conflict therefore by leading a chakra less world with chakra moderate would be cutting himself off from that world this connects to why he couldn't be Hokage Naruto said in his confrontation with Obito that the Hokage is the one who walks ahead of his comrades but moderate refused to let anyone stand behind him and if he wouldn't let anyone follow him he couldn't lead anyone he couldn't walk in the front the mistake he and his rival had made was that they didn't cultivate those who would come after them but while Hoshi Rama's will a fire did eventually reach Naruto moderate had only cut down his potential successors he used Obito is a tool for his resurrection he saw Sasuke as just another pair of Sharingan and just as hashirama had once sacrificed their friendship to protect the village Madara sacrificed his Uchiha child to protect the infinite tsukuyomi he did the very same thing he had criticized hashirama for doing mistaking the cause for the end mistaking his dream for true peace he tried to become a God and avoid the pitfalls of other humans but he walked right into them anyway because he was only human Mara's character incorporated the thematic narrative of the entire series but while he tried to rise above the duality of humanity and thus reject the idea of compromise he ultimately failed to do so which gave the protagonist a chance to defeat him unfortunately he wasn't defeated and as such his character arc wasn't really resolved then again all the details for a complete character arc are there I guess it just doesn't feel complete since it lacks the same turning point that the preceding ideological clashes had there was no final battle to drive things home no opportunity for Naruto and Sasuke to prove him wrong on their own in place of that we got Kaguya this is the part where I say Kaguya ruined the ending of Naruto in all seriousness though Kaguya isn't a terrible villain she's just a terrible final boss for this particular series as I've outlined in this and my previous video Naruto is at least in part a story about human hypocrisy once moderate all doubt the duality of mankind that was endgame you can't go bigger than that the theme had reached its logical conclusion so it made sense that Kaguya wasn't subjected to the same contradictions that plagued most of the antagonists up to this point she wasn't even human how could she possibly succumb to human hypocrisy the closest thing she had came from two anime original episodes that fleshed out her backstory but even that was more along the lines of irony than anything else she said she wanted to live a peaceful life but her interactions with the divine tree wound up becoming the source of generations of human warfare on a scale that had never reached before outside of that I don't really get Kaguya maybe there's more to glean out of her narrative impact from boruto but if that's the case she might have been better served as a villain in that series instead oh well I'm not gonna dwell on it I want to give a meteor sighs thank you to King Kevin thirty stone cold triple o seven and all of my other patrons for their continued support I feel that I should apologize for how long it took to make this video it this one shouldn't have taken a month to make I was slacking so I apologize for that but one's Anime Expo / because I will be going there in the next couple days so there that'll be a time where I'm not working on videos but once Anime Expo is over I plan to get back to a more consistent uploading schedule and on that note I do have plans to make a part 3 to this hypocrisy series just to address any interesting comments that I got and tie up any loose ends that I may have missed after that you can expect a video about prophecy and destiny in Naruto sometime in July so stay tuned for that and I'll see you next time
