robert johnson was an american blues musician whose two recording sessions in both 1936 and 1937 gave us 29 different songs those songs have gone on to influence generations of musicians today he's often called the king of the delta blues sadly johnson passed away in 1938 at the young age of 27. this might surprise a lot of people but up until the 1980s the general public believed no pictures of robert johnson were in existence neither the 1961 release of robert johnson king of the delta blues singers or the 1970 release of robert johnson king of the delta blue singers volume 2 contained an actual image of robert johnson instead the record companies use artwork on the album cover eventually it was found that robert johnson's half sister carrie thompson was in possession of several photos of him johnson's first photo was published almost in passing in the february 13 1986 issue of rolling stone magazine the photo is commonly known as the dime store portrait the next robert johnson photo that was released to the public came in the 1989 issue of 78 quarterly the photo is known as the studio portrait [Music] in 1990 robert johnson the complete recordings was released both the dime store photo and the studio portrait featured predominantly in this new robert johnson release the album contained 41 recordings 29 of them were original songs while the other 12 tracks were alternate takes in 2020 a confirmed third photographer robert johnson appeared on the cover of brother robert growing up with robert johnson by annie anderson anderson's father was once robert johnson's stepfather even though they were of no blood relation anderson and johnson still lived together for some time as brother and sister hence why she called him brother robert her photo appears to be from the same occasion as the dime store portrait that was released in 1986. in this photo robert appears to be smiling and having a good time annie has kept this photo safe in her possession for a remarkably long time around 2008 a supposed photo of robert johnson and johnny shines began to circulate the november 2008 issue of vanity fair debated its authenticity scholars have since declared it not to be robert in the photo some even believe that the photo to be tampered with david honeyboy edwards and robert lockwood two people who personally knew robert johnson didn't recognize either one of the people in the photo around december 2015 another photo was published reporting to have robert johnson in it it was quickly proven not to be johnson by scholars the photo had a number of glaring errors for example kraft passed away before johnson met coleman the clothing the furniture and even the coke bottle was proven to be from a period after johnson had passed as of right now there are only three confirmed photos of robert johnson while it's doubtful that another photo of the blues musician will ever appear you just never know this is john at still living the blues thank you for watching please remember to hit the subscribe button click like and leave a comment you
