hey y'all Scott here I need to lose weight done I have a lot of money and I'm willing to give it to that Mouse what happened see you wonder why these companies refuse to make the exact game you want because they're so worried about becoming this that they end up becoming like this anyways because they didn't make the exact game you want that's business it's what every company is trying to avoid a product that regardless of the quality flops financially it tanks all the money you poured into it gone not made back and you're left having to make a statement to investors Great Clips is hiring it's the commercial failures something we've all noticed in gaming even if you don't pay attention to the industry you really think they're selling anthem for a dollar because they're nice believe me they're not they would sell it for two if they could well this just makes me want the Reminisce on some commercial failures throughout gaming history whether they were a video game a video game accessory barely anything that made hundreds of employees lose their jobs this will be fun obviously the game that kick-started the whole failure Trend was ET on Atari 2600 the infamous worst game of all time garnered its reputation due to absurd miscalculations they were expecting this game to sell so well Millions upon millions of copies there is a rumor for a while they produced more ET games than there were Atari 2600 consoles on the market like out of all games to be hotly anticipated E.T the video game and the movie was a big success but like who watched that and said I can't wait to play it you think they'd put more stock into Like a Star Wars game or something you know a big action movie that kids and adults both enjoyed that at iconic scenes that translated to video game seamlessly and we need to cleaned house at the box office but is that really reason to expect the video game to do well I mean have you seen the box office results Atari Rush development of the game anticipating big results for that holiday season and because of that the game released in a confusing State players didn't know what to do and many returned it to retailers resulting in millions of unsold copies on atari's end bringing forth crippling Financial losses I mean it's pretty wild that ET caused that and not Oscar's trash race but in reality it didn't Direct directly cause atari's downfall and the video game industry crashing for a bit it was more so the straw that broke the camel's back after numerous poor decisions it's just fun to blame video games on life's problems E.T wasn't the first commercial failure in gaming but it's easily the most well known and frankly didn't even do all too bad sales wise selling over 2.5 million copies however because of the returns and bad word of mouth Atari ended up with so much unsold inventory they had to bury some of it out in New Mexico to find new one we may be setting our standards too high to start things off so let's reel things back in a bit go on that Katana was hyped up to be the next evolution of first-person shooters all the way back in the year 2000 being designed by John Romero who helped create Wolfenstein 3D Doom quake as some of the most influential games of all time after leaving the company behind those titles it's software Romero set off to make his own game daikatana hey now there's got to be some people interested in that at least 40 352. damn it this game is notorious for its pompous ass ad campaign claiming to be the next Jesus Christ just because John Romero was involved yeah you know what else he was involved in atheism how could it be the next Jesus Christ then John Romero is about to make you his [ __ ] I'd prefer lunch the marketing was bad enough but then you look at the game itself ah yes the vital ingredient in [ __ ] making so I tried the PC version here and I got to this portion whereby just stepping over an imaginary line the game asks you to stop and load the rest of the level there's frogs and bees right here though and I ain't just wasted my ammo throughout the first part of the air area so I'm getting pushed around by them constantly triggering the loading screen to come back making it piss hard to kill them especially without ammo so by the time I finally do so right around the corner is a turret that auto locks to me and fam I can tell why this game didn't sell fans are outraged at Dai Katana after the reported frog and Bee usage in the game it's just not a good game it's poorly designed to its core and doesn't do anything noteworthy it's like Wolfenstein doom and Quake weren't huge successes just because John Romero worked on them they were revolutionary and were actually fun but for some reason the company behind Dai Katana didn't think that's why people cared and thus we have one of the most infamous game releases of all time one that lost a ton of money and ruined the reputation of John Romero for a while there but hey and past the bar but that makes me ask was there ever a video game product that sold zero copies there is now the you draw game tablet released in 2010 for the Wii and in 2011 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and that part is key here see this was a time in which various companies started putting their once Wii exclusive series on 360 and PS3 to mixed results you thought touch the ferret was gonna work on PS3 do you draw tablet for the Wii stunk but it was a unique idea for the time a drawing tablet for a game console you're required to play Dr blowhole returns again with first time it's been done but based on the Fairly positive reviews at the time I can't help but feel that some of these tablets have degraded in responsiveness over the years either that or I've been writing my name wrong all this time you draw and we actually did fairly well everything about it was aimed at children from the design of the tablet to the game's release for it so for what it was I guess it was fine now the company behind the udrot tablet THQ already wasn't doing too hard but after the relative success of you draw they thought this was some powerful brand it's like they hadn't seen something still a copy before so they bet hard on introducing you draw for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. much like how I'm betting hard on introducing Windex to these ants should have learned from you draw 1.4 million unsold units out of how many sold like 18 million right wait less well I never accounted for this you draw was something that only worked in the Wii environment this was a cheap drawing tablet with gimmicky games was there any demand for this elsewhere only three you draw games were made for PS3 and 360 as well which just raises further questions why did you assume this was going to be successful when you didn't even make any damn games for it can the games you did make for it you drop for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 was not only a commercial failure it was pretty much responsible for tanking an entire company I mean how stupid could you be for assuming a Wii drawing tablet would be a hit on the consoles people told me they [ __ ] my dad on is their voice chat but let's be fair here this was stupid this was just [ __ ] dumb Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story plus Bowser Jr's Journey for the Nintendo 3DS a remake of a Nintendo DS game with nothing wrong with it that can be played on any Nintendo 3DS console released in 2019 when the 3DS was all but dead and buried I wonder what happened shame when they go like this much like you draw this commercial failure brought an entire Studio down with it this time being Alpha Dream the longtime developers of the Mario Luigi RPG series what a beloved and consistent series from the Game Boy Advance to the Nintendo DS to the Nintendo 3DS each handheld was graced with one or even two original entries which many times were lauded as some of the best games on their respective systems though definitely less so in the 3DS as Mario and Luigi Dream Team and paper jam were a bit lower rated than usual for the franchise and not bad games at all they just had more glaring problems such as dream teams incessant tutorials and paper Jam's lack of freshness and creativity so when the series is in a bit of a rough patch you go back to its roots in 2017 a remake of the first title on Game Boy Advance was released for the 3DS Superstar Saga plus Bowser's Minions this felt completely warranted I mean Superstar Saga was a fan favorite but was showing its age and could be tightened up a bit plus with a 3DS remake that meant you could play the entire series on one system that does simplify things still though releasing in late 2017 didn't mean less eyes were on it than usual I mean the Nintendo switch had already launched at this point Superstar Saga released the same month as Mario Odyssey many were upset this was a 3DS game and not on the switch because well many of us were over this thing by that point so you know when a few months later Nintendo announced another Mario Luigi remake on the 3DS that hit well yeah that was well Bowser's Inside Story plus Bowser Jr's Journey was announced in March of 2018 for release in 2019. why Ted is an excruciatingly long time from reveal to release for Nintendo for a remake just months after a very similar product from the same series just launched for perspective Super Smash Brothers ultimate was revealed after this game and launched before it did I don't know why they announced this when they did but that's not the biggest question concerning this game the biggest question is its existence Bowser's Inside Story is a fan favorite generally considered the best of the Mario and Luigi games but there wasn't much that needed updated or changed it was already playable on 3DS and there's a whole ass game they skipped that might have needed a remake way more the Remake wasn't necessarily better or worse it was still the same great game it's more so up to personal preference which version you like but I think even people who prefer the Remake will admit this was a waste and it's obvious looking at sales consume tumors thought so too as this ended up being one of the worst selling Mario games of all time and ended up bankrupting Alpha Dream it's incredibly sad but I mean were they expecting this to do well if they were truly in financial ruin why would they put the fate of their company into an unnecessary remake on a dead handheld that could already play the original release well they were thinking outside the box which is also where they died but hey look at the bright side it was death not a lawsuit Death Jam rap star a rapping karaoke game that didn't get the rights to its raps I mean what do they think was gonna happen from not getting the rights to use 50 plus songs in their game maybe once you get past the 55th felony it resets not only did the game not perform the greatest sales wise I mean it released within two years of Activision launching nine Guitar Hero products I think another music game that's just karaoke at the end of the day is gonna get drowned out you had a lawsuit on top of that where there's no defending yourself you're in the wrong and you have have to pay up do you really think the rap star developer 4mm has 8 million in cash lying around like what else have they made so they should be fine you know you just can't catch a break Square Enix I don't know how it's right there so many games at Square Enix has published I always tend to see articles come out about how they underperformed Tomb Raider from 2013 sold over 3 million copies in its launch month but Square wanted 6 million oh well boo damn who you weren't able to make enough money for a 40th yacht I mean obviously the rising cost of game development makes it significantly harder for some of these games selling 3 million copies to be seen as adequate I mean around that time Square Enix also released Sleeping Dogs yeah snoring mutts plus Hitman Absolution All of which they claimed were failures Square would often times expect too much from some of their franchises like Tomb Raider 2013 was the first new Mainline Tomb Raider since 2008 after a string of games that were just okay you were thinking this one was gonna outsell some of the best-selling titles in the series lifetime sales in the first month the same month God of War ascension Gears of War judgment and BioShock Infinite came out the same can be said for Hitman an Absolution I mean what it had been six years since the last Hitman game it comes out the same month of Halo 4 Black Ops 2 held the same damn day as Family Guy back to the Multiverse I mean that's just business 101 don't do that and even after a busy holiday season for a new entry in a one storming franchise selling over three and a half million units four months later I think that's pretty respectable but Square just has to chase the Trends they have to compare themselves to the rest of the industry if Call of Duty made a billion dollars in 10 days surely exhausted canines can get the hell out of here I find that companies can oftentimes be so blinded by what they perceive as the latest Trend that it can severely hurt them once again as an example Square Enix just had to break into live service games because why they wanted to impress their eight-year-old son this not genre more so business release strategy is all the rage these days made Popular by games like Destiny and fortnite like wow alcohol was made Popular by substance abuse so these games were designed to live on for years getting free updates consistently focusing on online multiplayering ways to keep the players engaged with this one title it's a sound idea I just find that most companies absolutely bought [ __ ] they launch with barely any content because they're saving most of it for free updates later down the line the core gameplay is almost always repetitive as all hell because it's designed around being addictive but because they're trying too hard it ends up not working and worst of all companies like Square Enix try cramming this business model in the games that would have been so cool without it the games like Avengers that would have been great as a single player cinematic action game but nope forced online connection repetitive gameplay repetitive environments it's just banking on the name and the fact that live service games are big but that doesn't excuse it from being a pretty mediocre and Bland game which is why it bombed but then one year later they didn't another Marvel game Guardians of the Galaxy which was fully just single player it was actually pretty good but once again didn't perform as well as Square was expecting which was probably because nobody trusted this damn thing after Avengers another game of theirs forced into the live surface formula was babylon's Fall by Platinum Games a company known for their Ultra refined accessible yet incredibly deep single player hack and slashes with Gorgeous art styles Square Enix told him to make babylon's Fallen overly simplistic shallow online only hack and slash with Hideous visuals it launched in 2022 and six months later they announced the online service would be shutting down and thus we can never play the game ever again damn I mean is that what happens if a live service game fails we just can't play it ever again one of godfall sells bad I haven't played it yet and will never have any desire to do so but what if I get a lobotomy what will Square Enix take away from all these failures that we don't want bad games that we don't want games by these developers that we don't want games should we buy games just to send a message to these companies like hey I have my enhance money for this week but I'll buy Mighty number nine instead to show the video game industry I want more games like this well good games like this but still I mean so many series are resurrected these days with titles that we're told as fans if we want to see more games we should buy this one Super Monkey Balls Star Fox clanoa chibi Robo all series we've been told to make sure we buy this one or else but why focus on just these games when we can look at the bigger picture how can we live with ourselves when all these games are failing oh these commercial failures were miserable and just look at these portason games that failed cry cry these companies need our help we should make sure to support every game that comes out so then fans I don't know of a series I don't care about can be kinda happy one day who needs bail money who needs to repair the roof I'm gonna spend all my cash on ensuring that we never see another commercial failure in gaming ever again I need the world to do the same we gotta spread the word all right everybody just like we practiced I'm ready to think I'm making a difference you could always go back to vegan but this is so much more effective it's like not a gunshot that Goodwill exactly I think most of society's problems stem from failure murder failure to live bad movies Failure to launch failure failure what we're doing here is something somebody's never done before something important Dreams Come some games go foreign [Music] to a place not your shelf though these are large corporations that need our raid to save [Music] their graves we all got some cash wipe bother even life [Music] are new jeans worth more than Mighty number nine number nine by the game it's better than feeling the shame you don't have to play it's all for the sales charts anyway you'll make some pounds good job you boosted their Mirage [Music] before I don't have to play [Music] [Music] wait [Music] you guys I think I got it all wrong we can't buy every game if we're not interested in one why should we spend our money on it if a game fails that stinks but failure is a part of life without failure you wouldn't have success we shouldn't feel the need to buy a piece of entertainment we're not interested in we should focus on what makes us happy and what we want to experience and now people we don't know tell us what we should like it won't embarrass ourselves so we want to damn it okay it wasn't worth it anyway some days I'll play a better game [Music] get away [Music] [Applause] [Music]
