everyone who goes to the earth doors knows the Trangia it's probably the oldest most known simple effective robust alcohol burner you put alcohol inside you get the lid with the rubber so you can enclose it in there I know a lot of people don't like doing that but you can still do it and you have the simmering ring which you can also use to extinguish the flame of course you have to allow it to bloom which takes time until the flame starts going out of the holes and to be honest the Trangia itself on its own is actually not the lightest it takes quite a while to cool down so it gets very hot because it's made out of brass and if you just want to stop make a Brook you know continue on your way I found that actually takes it about 15 minutes to 20 minutes to cool down enough so that you can close it and continue on your way which in my opinion it's just too much it's just too long and also just the profile itself again not the flattest on the other hand of the spectrum we have gas and then we have the simple very effective very lightweight titanium stove usually known as the BRS this one is actually by Alex I love it's exactly the same if you do buy that you really want to buy the premise because otherwise the fit doesn't always work Coleman is fine but again sometimes it doesn't work from what I've seen Primus always works and that stove weighs 25 grams which is great no issues there the problem is that the gas canister on its own weighs a hundred grams now it's great because it fits perfectly into five hundred and fifty six hundred fifty mil mugs and then you can place the solve in there your lighter whatever else and continue on your way it's very effective doesn't take a lot of space but I did see a video by Wiltshire man and he said something that kind of stuck with me he said meth has so guest doesn't now obviously that's an opinion but there's something to it you know your your nature you sort of want to even if you're not bushcrafting you just want to experience something that is more natural gas makes a lot of noise it doesn't feel exactly like normal fire I don't know how to explain but there's just something to it and I watched the video by wheelchair man where he basically made a stove using fire rope and the lid of a Branston Pickle so I I took the the lid itself and I put it on my scales and I realized when I mean that's 10 grams on its own you add the fire rope and it's actually not that lightweight all things considered so I did some experimentation looked around my house and I found this lid which is a hartley's jam lid so I took some fire rope and I shove it in there and there you have it you have a stove an open stove you don't have a lid you can't really you don't have anything to extinguish the fire with but it's it's quite effective but believe it or not that here weighs 32 grams and then I thought well I want something that I can enclose it can be a little bit lighter something I can extinguish the fire with or even if it's just in my in my backpack I don't want you know the rope to either fall or out of it or although there's just quite a bit of pressure there and those indentations are holding it together but still and then I thought wait a minute this is perfect all right this is a small Vaseline tin and surprisingly on its own it weighs 5 grams and there you have it now with the fire rope this on its own weighs 22 grams with the lid it's 26 grams now mind you okay that's one gram more than the titanium but then we're eliminating the gas canister wait and the profile I mean the profile is just amazing this is so flat you can put it in your pocket you wouldn't even know that it's there you can extinguish the fire with the lid you can enclose it and basically throw it in your backpack it doesn't really weigh anything and honestly this is great so I did some experimentations and basically this type of burner vs the Trangia and I have to tell you yes the Trangia is a little bit faster but honestly not by much really we're talking about seconds I mean on an average I would say okay let's say 20 to 40 seconds faster for the Trangia but either way we're still talking close to eight minutes for a boil if this is not --guest okay it's not going to take two or three minutes it's going to take seven to eight minutes and if this is closer to the eight minutes and this is that say you know seven minutes and 20 seconds this is seven minutes and 58 honestly who cares by that point who cares it's it's about the same this way is nothing it's flat it has the lid I can extinguish the fire with it and also and this is the the unique thing about it okay this can't hold a lot of alcohol you're not going to cook with this we're going to boil with this but with the way that I put it together I don't even need a measuring device I just pour in the alcohol and as soon as I see it on top I know that I have enough and that's exactly for one boil maybe a little bit more you know if I'm not really careful which is essentially an ounce right so enhance an ounce of alcohol and honestly I have to tell you I don't have any problems with the flame it holds together fine the only difference is that I normally use this and when you put the attraction in there you want the I don't know what to call this you want it at the very bottom if I put it like this it would be too high okay then it I don't even know if I can put the this part in there but either way when it's on the at the bottom you know there's even in enough space for you to insert the extinguisher through here but when I use this fire roll burner I have to put it at the very top as it is now put it in the center and that's about it now it's not very convenient in the sense that I'm not going to use my fingers to try and extinguish it like that so I just leave it open honestly it's fine it really is I mean this is kind of nice but you really don't need it for most things because even a cup like this just fits you don't really need it it works just fine like that so just to conclude I measured it several times on different I suppose expeditions because it's like that against the Trangia in windy conditions both of them obviously need some kind of a windshield honestly I haven't seen very much of a difference which really surprised me I thought of the Trangia will be so much better ok I mean takes time to prime know that but once it gets going you kind of think okay I mean it's doing its job and and it does but honestly I haven't felt very much of a difference again like I said well what is the difference really 10 20 seconds one thing I forgot to mention and here's the kicker one meter of this fire rope cost me one pound fifty including shipping if you buy it in black it costs a little bit more but in the end of the day who cares first of all it'll probably become black and honestly who cares and I don't consider the cost of this thing because I used it so I just have this thing so I would say that one meter is probably sufficient to make about three of those you see I made this and this and this is the leftover this is probably enough for another one of these ones so let's say about 50 P - you know just to make this this is what as far as I'm concerned what this cost me 50 P if you want to be Petty and say okay you have to buy this as well so it's two pounds everything together so two pounds or 50 P in my opinion if that's not the cheapest alcohol stove out there I don't know what is it also so it's the cheapest it's effective it's lightweight and it has a flat profile honestly no-brainer
