There are at least two Amsterdam's for guests to explore a touristic Amsterdam, loud and welcoming and the local one, respectful and intriguing so I asked entrusted locals to help me creating an insider list of the top things to do in Amsterdam Here is our first suggestion from the locals Get up before everyone else and have the city for yourself And observe how the Old Town is slowly waking up in front of you Right Silvino? Well, waking up is the hardest part but trust me it's well worth it! I would recommend doing it on Sunday though as even at 8 in the morning the city will still be asleep For safe cycling in Amsterdam don't stop in the middle of the road and use your bell That's it, you'll be fine! Otherwise get off the roads and into the canals! When hopping on a boat skip the touristic offerings and trust the locals Slowly soak in the view of picturesque Amsterdam and let your local guide pilot you through a maze of winding canals Kids will absolutely love it! And trust me a sunset boat ride will surely become a highlight of your visit! Amsterdam loves arts For all your art & culture needs Museumplein is the place Literally meaning 'museum square' it is bordered by the Rijksmuseum for Dutch art and history exhibitions, the world's largest and most visited Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Modern Art Museum which is located inside... Well... Inside a giant bathtub! At least that's how the locals call it! For more tips on unique and less touristy museums make sure to check out our other videos and subscribe to our Channel! And apart from museums and galleries, art is out and about on the streets and walls of Amsterdam particularly in a less known hip area called NDSM So how to get there? Just hop on one of the free ferries that will take you from the Central Station to NDSM in only 15 minutes! So the NDSM area is this former boat factory where today is this artists' hotspot with amazing local initiatives cool cafes looking out off the water and amazing street art everywhere! Time for some food! Eat a delicious Stroopwafel! Of course when you're in Amsterdam the one thing you have to try is the Stroopwafel a very famous Dutch delicacy and where else but to do it here on the Albert Cuyp Market At this place, one of the oldest on the street My personal favorite! Wow look at all that syrup! Wow that is a real stroop waffle! After the sugar rush go for some shopping! In no way Albert Cuyp is the only market in town Chances are there's a smaller street market happening somewhere in your area For instance in Amsterdam West Whenever shopping I usually go to local markets like this one, the Ten Katemarkt one of my favorites! And also you have the Foodhallen nearby This place is filled with more than 20 international food stalls From street food to Michelin star concepts and vegan choices! For us Dutches city parks aren't just a leafy retreat but a big part of our culture As soon as the Sun shines through grey skies and especially on the weekends parks are full of people running away from the city bustle Vondelpark, the biggest park in Amsterdam is full of attractions and art pieces here you will even find a real Picasso sculpture! Looking for a smaller park? Head over to the Wertheim park the oldest Park of Amsterdam and for a more local vibe visit the Westerpark This is the Westerpark, this is where the locals come! If you want to escape the crowds this is the place to be! Number three: taste some fine Dutch cheese! So the Dutch cheese tasting it's all about the smell, the structure, the flavor so in combination with some Dutch wine that's of course the best! Cheers! Cheers to that! Number two spend the day out of town! Just like with the bikes train journeys are an essential part of Dutch lifestyle so jump on one heading to Harlem and within 20 minutes you find yourself surrounded by quaint buildings cobbled streets and even a windmill! It's like Amsterdam got shrunk into a more manageable cuter version of itself! While you're in Central Harlem visit Jopenkerk, a former church transformed into a modern brewery and restaurant And number one! Explore the red-light district differently! My suggestion would be not to follow the main streets but to cross them you'll see a completely different Amsterdam by going left where the others go right! Tucked away in a side alley you'll find brewery De Preal where you can enjoy a fine taste of local beers Visit the old church for beautiful, artwork, peace and silence and a few canals away there is even a Buddhist temple From there it's only a few steps to LGBT friendly cafe 't Mandje the oldest gay bar in town that's worth a visit at night So what else to do at the end of the day? Here is a bonus tip! Get higher! And observe this beautiful city from a rooftop! If it happens to be a sunny day head over to Hopp a modern and casual beer garden in Amsterdam East and the choice that works in any weather is A'DAM lookout which is located in Amsterdam north the view is unbeatable but if you are a brave heart pay an extra five euros for Europe's highest swing to peek over the edge! From early morning hours to long into the starry night Amsterdam has something to offer for all of us Hopefully these local insights will get you inspired to find your own Amsterdam gems and experience the city like a local!
