going to be shooting at some targets that that I have more of an interest in this is Bill Buckner who helped us lose to the mats I'm from Boston you can understand why I want to shoot at him and of course we have the NBC Peacock here and the ape we've strapped a lot of paint cans to them so this fao schwarz ape will really fly apart the bill is not going to ever do any good with you but we've done we strapped lots of paint to them when we're gonna light up like a Christmas usually there that blows up now if you have appropriate chemistry we've had up a flare that we could see on hunter is just requested a propane canister he was brittle at Bear River that man was holding ash machine gun about 15 minutes ago we try this for a bit and then we're getting the grenade launcher attagirl move with it well I can cut bill buckner down with this machine gun we're gonna go in flows forth at each of the strangest conversations I believe I've had in a while Oh excellent I gotta get that bear all right you know for its very very good punch ah that'll be said very thank you it's about losing your anything yeah you got a I like the safety guy just said move your whiskey before you start shooting elusive animal yeah what Bill Buckner gonna think when he's watching at home and yeah he's like you know if I shoot the NBC logo there were there were corporate ramifications but if you do it I could say you were a loose cannon yeah well oh wow that's a new promo for must-see TV yeah if I cite it on that on the right shoulder sort of yeah yeah I think you're getting yours oh yeah that is that little better than this check it out the proud Highway all these letters until 1967 vol 1 you gotta see it we're gonna take a little break when we come back I am from ABC my name is Thompson and I've been paid yet so if we have any weird or apparently melancholy or sideways slips don't be surprised right and uh I'm very excited I've missed Atari the Keith Richards my old rusted friend in a sense of history and you dope it's on his key we've been talking about history we've gotta make music and he's better at music than I am at plugin so why don't we go to my friend these records who refuses to come out heard properly for the central tonight ABC in concert takes you along for an evening with Keith Richards and the inimitable dr. hunter s Thompson and they said it couldn't be done now we've got Keith sheltered in his room and I'm sort of refusing to come out until hundred comes to the hotel and turns over this check cake is fine we show the packs yeah I think that what do you think this is fax can written by Keith Richards we can read it here doc I am here but he crossed out disappearing vanishing I want your feet in cash or No Deal doc we should give it to hunter and and let him deal with give it to Keith I think that's what he should do you know and then letís look at me back to hunter right cool that was good first online right going on so I did all right how you doing I've done this on the whole I guess puzzle it yes home blade machinery nasty crowd I'm a doctor of everything except medicine ABC in concert brought to you by Sears they can touch right nuts no earlier organs whoa I've changed my eyes oh my spine what is wrong with the past three years well yeah yeah what else would be true though oh the one I never did know that was a leading edge of a great party I threw that joke out because I was going to clean up the dirt you know and all but it changed the blood I thought that would be a great blind friend but I'm stuck within illness the precision my dad wouldn't allow me and no I mean it wouldn't change me blunt - nothing like a boyfriend I mean you are unchanged this blood I mean who'd want it where would I put it it's all about the next world you know means open it's like what are we looking for a promotion demotion and and why do we know here living this life what's the whole speculation about the next one it'll either be there or it won't but I want to be blocked there you go Zealand platform who was there that you were already in the next world or something every great yeah there are I mean you're the guys all our friend we're getting got lonely old man a lot of friends are gone right and you say but it'd be nice to see them up in heaven but I don't gots cutting around on clouds plane yeah does everybody look at you had you know uh what about Hoover the change what would he call my girls I think basically you know if I had my way yeah yeah probably what would have wormed it [ __ ] the dorm does okay the lady my bird little but uh this denise is only useful and it flies he'll be there too much fun for Hoover I said impact as a yeah you might be right reason stuff and I'm actually excited back to the saving feet if you're an FBI director but with his fidelity no no I don't he didn't he probably I mean his fate very not to come back as anything afar you did a deal yeah yeah razzle rolling stones really was who do you like the Beatles who know you had got one answer was very little I mean on the surface at least these are only all started little very little difference in the Beatles and ourselves because a bunch of kids that wanted to play black American music you're like Peter but yeah but yeah because they came off you know they were from it at the same time they had to break in the door he said without there be no stones without being I mean I have to take my hat off to John yeah you know I was the strong man in in the Beatles we didn't if they had to kick the door in there's no way we that you know got in because they already look too bizarre where were you on those so Christmas Eve my dreams it to you to smithy at play negate Pro in and they let it be in London they would be working that night soon brutal yeah I probably get paid like half as much as usual to Christmas Eve no we advertise either they did 6662 pigment coffee well no let me think about it 66 oh boy sixties a Christmassy six is flat on my back after working solid I guess everywhere fair yeah since Christmas Eve suit other drug traffic's we learned well just look at it well 69 about just getting over autumn on but you were gonna wreck a little of it right yeah I'm standing there and I'm watching the Angels shove people around and I'm seeing one freaked out speed black guy do the wrong thing it really favorite green suit oh yeah greens you know we just wanted to do a concert and and Grateful Dead's have done hundreds of them ranges disco they run this they run the show there and so it slowly we're on the road working and but we'd like to do you know one of your famous free comes as I said thank you to everybody and it will just move them so we leave it to them and they say uh no security and blah blah uh and they say well we usually use the angels and they're called in nobody ever deal with them and blah blah I was truly one to work yeah they did you know any and and and everything they pulled off up until then has been very peaceable but this thing just got too out of hand for them and for the frisco you know a the city kept jerking them around like where you can hold it this park you know that park and so we end up and ISM in this desert yeah there was there are half a million people out there in a net feel or a woman those five understand I mean there's five I mean I mean face it I mean I know III counted for 1000 personally okay three people are big diver so I did one ride and one was born out in there yeah so the same people the same amount of people laugh but just came in I'd rather just play the blues yes but what do you got I mean a painter has got a canvas you know but there's got to be a frame around it somewhere you're the problem you know the writers got a yeah reams of empty paper which is supposed to fill with words and brilliantly put together right okay and a musician as silence poor baby and now back to in concert wide-body I get a kick out of here well we just tell what's what better of your taste you know stealing is that wrong I call it yeah I always like to credit people when I lift their stuff boom comes up on stage is mine the hack Hunter Thompson nice to see you how are you oh I'm terrible what's the matter you don't I've been going to court every morning for two weeks at seven o'clock yeah that uh for me to go anywhere at seven o'clock is real hard so I had to stay up all night yeah so I've never stayed up all night for two weeks that makes sure you don't sleep at all do it's about $188 yeah so I'm type I want to prove something you know yeah whatever what I'm not sure what but you feel like you're now in the middle of a mission and you will have proven something uh I probably will have yeah what is over yeah all right well then why I came here but yeah all right something I didn't I couldn't talk this morning all my voice was gone but I called to say I can't make it I couldn't say anything uh-huh also originally you thought you called it you called here to cancel yeah yeah microphone on or you did something a sandbag tripper you have a microphone and I don't that's right I'm I'm the only one in the building with a mic on nobody hears anything we go Chicago Chicago uh okay uh now when you come on miked it all right no no really you taking everything under this thing oh I see okay you're hearing every word you say paranoia though yeah so your a doctor under Thompson can I ask you what that what these that we why don't we read out the discuss fees you don't want to discuss it I could discuss your childhood and you know your teeth and stuff like that but really is really grab we're not into an academic credential thing well no I didn't I just assumed it why is this on the use of the term doctor yeah at certain times but the and Becca my doctor chemotherapy of the journalism and of constantly divinity yeah divinity divinity here well I would have guessed that let me ask you about you can berezino had many doctorates it's like being rich yeah well no I mean if you went to school and earned it you shouldn't be embarrassed by all but I've worked all my life for these things yeah wellthen doctorates uh-huh why shouldn't I be a little sensitive about you display namond something a sleazy you know TV little guys whatever fun I know I know and you just that's what we're doing here trying to have a little fun uh now tell me about the goings on home beach let's talk about something else for a second here what you brought your uh you brought is this a gift hunter or is this innocence yeah that's a good uh huh that's a bomb uh-huh we have here two or three thousand the firecrackers huh well know enough that money really see it's a it's a light thing I really I brought it out to us at all no you're not gonna be setting these off in here would you well you know no we'll just maybe like it same thing maybe later at the buffet upstairs well we'll set those up come put it back over here no no you get it you get it close to that cigarette no what happens I said don't worry it's going through but it doesn't one of it you uh tell me about you you your correspondence with the American Express Company about what did you have in mind for those folks I got offended frankly that the an American Express was offering the gold card to the rebel uh yeah what I considered a fairly loose funded sort of greedy kinda way and you have a gold card no I know see that's what I mean that's the but uh it's being offered in a way I consider the greater the gold car you do you have one yeah yeah now what is that what is that supposed to represent I have one of those what does that mean I don't think I can go anywhere I want and get money huh yeah yeah I can well and her limits of this and there are certain the dark aspects of that that contract but basically if I like I left the red Chrysler convertible Tauber Long Beach in hotels and beach houses I can just you know it's like [ __ ] cards right yeah I had it I didn't have to register in hotel just wave the car dinner and they call me doctor uh yeah tell you whatever you want really yeah the gold card but I didn't feel like she offered uh to uh do the NASA's yeah how does the Palm Beach I've been trying to look I've been uh educating myself to think like the Palm Beach life hmm and I've come to some prizes and surprising life stances in this I've been taking it driving up and down the beach and I've read Chrysler convertible with lesbians at like just naked people in the drugs oh this is the power of the gold card what you have to do but I thought that I found be I mean the the American Express image what I was kind of sullied by the idea that anyone could wander around like this red convertible by lesbians all that trumpets with a gold card so I would have a letter saying that - look I have a better idea and look that is it I should do your heads from now on for the gold court the Green Berets I don't want any part of it I've got put it down in a very forceful and I persuasive style and it was a rejected hmm well the swine that I wrote it was in with Johnson no no no all right there's a little frog shop somewhere so it would be an effective campaign I think you are or the American regress card yeah yeah whatever yeah let's put this yes I'm sure you have people here can work on it yo sure we do we have a full staff of folks who are let me get you commercial work that's all they do night morning I really worked in the court houses and stuff yeah I'm a reporter yeah let me now speaking of reporters is it true that you one time were a bowling reporter for a porter Rican newspaper well that's a low blow yeah well things I've done to bring that oh is that the truth though it is true yeah how does how does one get that position well I was writing a novel uh at the time about San Juan I decided that no actually reverse it I went to San Juan I decide to write a novel about it and what I wanted to do was work on this uh a new english-language paper this in one store and I presented my credentials and I immediately was horrible to rejected all my several friends men were hard start with the editor a letter saying uh you're a swine of fool and the UH and I do man pretty much the same letter you wrote to the American Express guy I said it was worse and I said I'm gonna find somebody come down here and get your biz and lo and behold and the UH like then way back in the personals ad you know call him to the New York on Sunday was a like a three glein ad that said famous international puerto rican sports magazine seeks a chic editor you know something like that hello i'll call that and it was some swine really it sort of comes down to who was starting a what he calling the Sports Illustrated of the Caribbean and sounded real good plus it gave me a kind of vengeance I liked yeah I like the subtle he scores uh to the best of my ability and I with it hey any live us this life yeah you want to settle scores yeah people get sloppy other one so I went down there to work in this magazine which I really thought was gonna get slick sports magazine head turn out to be a bowling sheet a horrible thing where I had a hanging on bowling alleys at night can report the scores of the federal lien yeah you know Harold's real estate sales and the Fernandez look how long did you is that fun for you noise who the man pseudo good good as long as you got the vengeance yes yeah yeah okay it's still going on listen Agatha I want to ask you if you can come back and see us again I'm sorry that we're running short on time I'd like to continue this discussion and there's no I don't like that you don't think you'd be back well that saves us making phone calls tomorrow alright thank you very much under the present after Hunter Thompson we'll be right back of Margery what Ian the next time you change it could be the year 2001 kodak introduces whole ships ultralights with the imbalance a suite may help you as Regina here Regina well we'll get her hang on I'm gonna have to put you on hold well there isn't a hold button sorry our next guest is a writer reporter lecturer and columnist ooh invent it and practice the gonzo form of journalism folks please welcome back to this program dr. hunter s Thompson hunter good to see you again yes how long ago was it that you were here well it seems like only yesterday yeah nice yeah you know time my family yeah it was fun yon winter was here a couple of weeks ago and we were talking about the 20th anniversary of Rolling Stone magazine and so on and so forth when when did you first start working with him and the magazine uh almost from the very beginning right from the mean what did you do before that where did he find you where did you find him well I was a people don't believe this but I was a respectable straight journalist you think I'll have the trick Karen thing but that's gone there goes your mom oh okay all right and so the money just continued talking there look around here yeah okay yeah yeah let me help you with your mittens all right it's right now you're fine your players put it on there all right great so ya know well how did you two happen to get together actually you three yu-yan in the magazine well let's see let's take it from the top here and be real straight let me ask you question uh-huh why didn't you take off your jacket before we started taping I wasn't here if it's cold behind me here and I've had the fun of me and I wasn't sure which one was gonna prevail all right okay having a clued around here we might get showers and I'm right here um all right so anywhere you and the magazine well I was looking at the time for I was into politics as I am though and I was uh gonna run for uh for sure of love where of picking cutty Aspen Colorado and as politicians will I was looking for uh constituency which we called freak power at the time freak power feature well we had run one campaign earlier for mayor and lost by six votes this was on the 3 power ticket recall yeah well you'd be surprised the old days had worried I suppose it did yeah and it might still work with honorable term and I notice that we had trouble registering our people for the mayoral and which we lost by six posters and I thought well this won't happen again and I'm gonna run for sheriff we're gonna register these buggers I looked around I thought who's gonna talk to him and I found this obscure magazine Rolling Stone I noticed that they were reading you know and uh they didn't they weren't into politics and uh I thought well I will talk to Rolling Stone I won't but that was the beginning of the relation yeah I put my uh literacy wonder but Mary program in there what are you printed you're still right for them uh yeah yeah yeah I have a well not open yeah you know young he's become a little giddy he's his old age now what is it I don't know no how do you how do you feel about what the the magazine is evolved to at this point I have you know a punt hold got the run hog yeah and uh it isn't is that as much fun huh well Brad really probably the same feeling about you remember your morning show yeah you remember the morning shelter that's amazing with that that was I do remember that um so what he been doing lately you're living in Colorado and Adler therefore live there most very extremely stable person what do you tell us a little bit about the the 88 the presidential camp oh hell I'll weave him to the mother Oh heaven alright now we're all right yeah we're what do you think we're testing equipment here hunter no I don't know the Japanese are sewing all kind of thing well let's talk about the the presidential campaign what does it look like what about the Democrats what about Gary Hart he's a friend of yours right yeah yeah Gary it's been a friend for a long time well tell me about his situation how did it strike you you know I could you like to Winston Churchill thing and see what times you have you know uh how did it strike you it's not means if as they really are that's head saying it's often a part I gotta watch myself there but uh it like a lot of people doing because uh Gary was as close as we've had in a while to a president in waiting and a lot of good people work for the campaign yeah and they're not there are good people in politics you know more than things people page was just kinda he's feeling hopeful yeah well I get a good pan out of this uh now Gary was he was running like 42 percent the polls over 22 per different Bush did you know that he was flirting with this kind of difficulty of this kind of problem well this been a problem well he did we have a date out of the race I mean so they I think we can't describe it as oh yes it is yes right all right yeah the dipped you had a problem with that the good a date that took you uh totally out of television uh provide a date like that I couldn't write anymore you know it's like yeah come to think of it yeah uh so who do you see now I do that uh yeah what's the problem and I had I don't graze that say for long but it's like you people talk about me if you don't dr. Thompson for a while did you realize he had a drinking problem well of course haven't written songs you know it's uh it's right here in front of us and uh you know all right but let they tell us just I don't agree like a silly and uh almost tragic kind of uh so you don't think that that situation should have taken him out of the race I am is one of the what a few people who counsel uh staying in insane to hold it yeah and as for the polls is it pointed out recently that people are very forgiving about that keep from horrific giving about the Ginsburg the pasta joint do you think if he didn't work and try perhaps at least publicly that he'd still be in there running today I don't know man I I think people like to see in a president at least and I've been this way myself and I still him you want to see somebody who can mind the store right and if Gary has that kind of trouble with one of his dates uh you know what's gonna happen when he goes to Russia and makes the Russian girl boy and I think that that strikes the red-nose Marines over there and are they all on Cornell court-martialed and uh I don't know people may a against Berg yeah let me let me interrupt here because I want to get your thoughts on on who we're looking at for candidates both sides of the aisle here who do you think it's gonna be coming out of the Democratic situation Oh young I keep all over there we don't know you know uh I was gonna show you Paul and TV rather than do this sort of thing I haven't I know sadness a myself that's like Richard Nixon uh huh well I'd uh just quickly now okay who is it gonna be contesting for the highest offer on Iowa it looks like Paul Simon Paul Simon with the bowtie guy yeah yeah I like the man you like him yeah he's from your neck of the woods Illinois yeah well Indiana right across the board yeah right just you're gonna person there yeah you think so I think so oh you for you know I've really haven't given it much thought that is what that's where we were at now because uh I read your book right now everybody immediately I vote for Jesse always always Justin Jack yeah I like Jeff be he's he brings a kind of a hard rock uh honesty but don't you think people are waiting for somebody to drop out of the sky as a popular frontrunner so we can then say oh yeah that's the guy well I know I'm a handicapping person you know I'm a gamma gambler and uh I could talk to you about a gambling and I could probably tell you for and I would bet with you at 11 to 1 right now that Teddy Kennedy's gonna busy oh really yeah well no it's just that I look at it as a gambler yeah and uh I'm not sure exactly why I see that baby okay with candy who beat four for instance here the main man Biden got blown totally out of the race for some another cheap scramble when it come under [ __ ] I get interrupt your we're out of time that upset you always yeah what will you come back sure David Koch will be back thank you thank you very much family affair nicely done featuring I haven't never won you don't even celebrate Thanksgiving because in Canada it's it comes it's like in June isn't it was earlier in Canada because of course the harvests is earlier and they're right cool so do you celebrate to Thanksgiving do you celebrate only once it's earlier in the season that's in October but I mean since you are Canadian but living in this country do celebrate I celebrate yes and I have two Thanksgiving dinners every year that interested our next guest has been called the most accurate and least factual reporter working today his latest book right here is entitled generation of swine tales of shame and degradation in the 80s ladies and gentlemen please welcome back Hunter Thompson hi nice to see you how you doing come on over thank you very much for being here how you been oh why is it very much everybody me good yeah where do you make you your home these days so same please either they get it for last 20 years many years where's that what do you Greek anybody's out there realized I'm your America we were yeah yeah any you were born in that area no I'm from Kentucky Kentucky originally where you vote yeah Indiana originally yeah and what is your life like there is Colorado you said peaceful you're up in the mountains you juggled yeah what kind of a day do you have to pick any day for example do you spend you get up early and write and stuff or what yeah I'm regularly in the morning I work all day long yeah yeah then I got the grass you know that got chopped wood mhm yeah what do you do for recreation there that's what Griffin it work give her a hike up into the mountain oh yeah I'll do that for I looked at kills and when you say kill you're talking about what neighbors what we don't love it Judy people dunno what you're using when you say you like to kill right uh yeah no I'm not teasing I used to like to kill when I realized that I was running uh you know you like hundred well I do it they look good yeah but I know that when you besides I quit because I realized I was not running for me so I was uh neither like to kill ya have you talked to anyone about this stuff huh but I I know I have to yeah III found right time burrows like what I found it interesting that in traveling here to be on the show you brought with you on the airplane a rifle is that correct was a letter to talk to you but they wouldn't let me do it yeah but I found it interesting that you could travel with a weapon on an airplane okay but I've told you repeatedly if you're innocent you can do anything yeah I am innocent and why shouldn't I rebel yeah but explain the procedure to me because it's nothing all you doing if you do is sign the ribs hey I wish we brought the damn gun haha they prevailed let me not to burn it's a beautiful park vibe weather we created magnet and collector's item no it's a working visa vote did we aren't killing Jim come into the scene yeah well uh uh little make yourselves known guns are killing with you yeah I don't have the easel my good but uh it's comforting to know that you can get enough of that um now let's talk about the who we think may be the new President of the United States even I heard you earlier do you think it's gonna be uh or was George Bush yeah before but you know it's uh it went right down to the wires and they're still having trouble counting the votes and so but let's eat it was George Bush how would you feel a bit earlier let's just say if it was if it is now George Bush how would you feel about that well but the dominant thing here is I won't be in the country for two years I beat him like my friend seems like I said I read it in stepchild and yeah I was right honey Bush was a UH booster like which is hard to get your hands on well he's not really there and uh I beat him and I uh love things about him you actually said threatening things about him did whitening well what secret service given something that I didn't really know I expect us to go back to that the Secret Service came to you and said what well I was in Milwaukee uh you know how my religious families we've discussed this was work I have a cover more room for all the religious uh knio knio religious like the cogs in the over verbal and I I'm speaking at a Catholic University of Milwaukee and I uh Marquette and I said these gentlemen who were after me for uh they were talking about politics and uh guilt Catholics here very much in the NGO you tell them you know but I'm certainly into guilt if it it if it'll help the story I mean you do not I'm not as well that's the whole point yeah yeah I'm into justice and I uh I said that he's uh what are you doing I don't know man get rid of it I said when new people when talking about politics and guilt let me tell you something we get was a shortcut plan in fact that uh George Bush is the guiltiest in politics therefore we have our subjects crossed and uh is the Jesuit you know I like just what though they're a smart and mean smarten mean you like the Jesuits characterized as being sorry you don't like to talk like argue with dizzily I see although excuse me I've just with up here yeah we get her in a large conclusion bring his own I'd like that he's nothing better than talking to a good mean Jesuit okay anyway yeah I get this is the story about how the Secret Service yeah okay they're uh there's a real story no and uh oh you don't hear too many of those no well I had a pretty good one earlier about a raccoon that no one seemed to enjoy but that raccoon yeah correct lien is a weird animal ball tell me about it have you ever we ever had one yeah we're glad even a minute I'm looking may give me a little jumpy hunter it's good for you yeah okay you're coming me done okay we have to we have to move along here now so finish the story we don't know good right all right shutting okay and uh I said to him all right uh let me tell you something it's a theorem as it were and uh if you people take her to those dolls of them your religion seriously you would uh George Bush is a goatee Ximena politician she would have to come up your Lesage with me and stomp him to death I see uh well that's true wouldn't you say that I mean if if I meant it's only guilty and if they believe that the Bern have you gotten young badly so now my golly school the Secret Service has a Brett took a booth table you would want it on two - one two - one it's good over join me in coming live the vice president to death on stage one zero oh you know we could take a vote here now we know one take any votes but so what did you get me know what are the Secret Service say they came to you the hope you Journal next day when a front very gentle and saying that the praise guns will alter advocate stumping brilliant vice president death pageants not I didn't do it I said if you believe you know if you don't talk about guilt when talking about religion I'm just a hillbilly I don't know too much about my religion but we share one thing in common which is a sense of justice I see and they but the Secret Service then Cano they came to me I was fine it wasn't in a de Coverley iran-contra hearings and I kept hearing I get been called physique reserve a time I've had to return one I said what this good whatever is what do you probably have is it gonna affect my address with until the wasn't no I don't think wanting to stomp the vice president today however you would never pretty whichever doctor by President ur I need these weevil uh-huh okay wait yeah you know I'm telling you we're we're out of time I'm sorry hey I know where we want to want to hear more about this killing machine no I know but we have to the gentleman the musician is something to live it up so I I have a Thursday no well III think it's my fault we wasted a lot of time and it's I hope that's it I was like you were a little late sure anyway the book is a generation of swine hunter s Thompson hope it does real well for it nice to see again Happy Thanksgiving absolutely we'll be right back speak English tomorrow at 9:00 reliability Hell's Angel I am pleased at long last to have honor Thompson on this program welcome great to have you here to do this to write these letters as well as they are to keep them to make carbon says to me two things one you had a sense of warning that you were going to be something and be somebody and this was your way yeah I think I had to be I never thought I had him as a writer I think it opens up my head here because that was backing to be another way he's no longer in service blessed asked me why were you why your writer he took a good beauty Oh see I tried cab driving I try to put it on the railroad you know no I didn't even get a job was my son I was evicted from a pirate-movie Java head basically that live so eventually a pittance would be to I moved to Colorado I've only had to buy the place because I couldn't move anymore there's just too much with a good epicenter and yeah I'm gonna kind of call in the water some other had some Gin Fizz he had some he didn't forward to this book give is talk about is is wine crystals all right pay me for that yeah but uh but you had two copies and you kept them and you kept them in that truck trucks proxy is rock oh boy why did you keep on trying to think I guess because as a sort of a break-in journalist at that time I was taught and I thought that what you want to do is keep copies of your stories of your byline yeah I thought your passport for your next job and I guess I figured that what the hell I'm going to keep loving the stories I may as well keep the letters we can know more about the less Hunter Thompson from these letters than anything that he has written outside of letters or anything he's done in his life he'll usually having every page of your life for any one letter here they're 12 or 15 enough but I'd listen to these things for a year with the editor Doug Brinkley and my son and his wife parading these things in front of my son and say well how about this 100 calm down yeah and it was just who is that variety and to break my memory and yeah I was like this is your life in space and she went back and reviewed had to who in the correspondence you know he's a real I've ever he looked at these things until they came up the basement like some kind of a genie in the pizzelle nur writing was the only thing that you knew you could do that satisfied well like a good painful I said it paper yummy yeah and then edit and then when I learned about these different works I learned that you to work for morning paper he's in work late at night you can work at 10 o'clock and you know get off the bed Baker's well what'd you learn up I said I get a wedgie way back yeah I went to I did a a actor newspaper that's right on the air for Jesus Christ I didn't know the difference totally anyone working at 7:00 morning and I didn't last one time did you create a persona for that you thought would serve you through that was you I'm afraid the in I created them you know crafter that made it it's not that give me too much credit merely ol Billy uh the lazy person physically I had to stick with what I whatever it was hi this document then why you just documented what you were well but by doing a logical things on keeping letters yeah I did ever since and it's clear in this book that I was going to be a writer and if the reason was well I can't do anything else well so because you tried what and just give you a job as a stockbroker now I'm going to personally until a news source that's the point of the old Hazel's but I found myself winding up at 4:30 in the morning in San Francisco down on Howard Street with the winos you know literally and to be selected and I was lining up for the selection process to eat picked out as those worthy to be allowed to deliver Safeway you know handle all around the neighborhood in every household a lot of be concern I was rejected I was rejected why you didn't measure up politically I uh and I thought what the hell is that giving people you know beer all forward help forward is in the [ __ ] of the wedding yeah I knew that uh and then was gonna work I couldn't get a job as runners because I had been there long enough as a registered voter yeah oh I tried every conceivable thing there was winner me what writer had taught you the most who have you learned the most from maybe the most important lesson I was trying to learn early was that since I wasn't desperate and this kind of uh you know playing limited qualifications or anything else I kind of trying to set my fate and figure out if I can get away with it and what I learned from anyway mainly I think anyway is the best lesson for him and worlds of some of his pros ready you know you're there but what he taught me was that you can want to be a writer and anyway you can't be a writer and that was very important it wasn't like I was trying some that wasn't a dilettante now I wasn't playing around I had to be a writer and that that helps oh you know that's not a failure yes ahem for us your design is that it's doing a choice it's a give me the commitment a long time ago it was very resistant to find out that maybe something that no it was and after that I began to look at anyways prose but it wasn't me lesson that it was looking at prose for no no it is he he taught me that you can't be a writer and you can use each other you don't have to you know pinky slings and arrows forever I'm sorry to zelich since october president but no doctor get away with it is very important getting away with it yeah to be a writer I can throw that anyway would yeah but there's this story I heard the story long time ago about you and and it the care the writers changed but the stories you pouring over whoever it might be Hemingway or Faulkner or Shakespeare and this legendary story of you pouring over in some one thing under what the hell are you doing and you think I'm trying to get the however times I would type it from that just do you give me surprised as the city type somebody else's wine a friend of Care Act's poetry I get what I do it feel like a different ring rhythm but if you typed on somebody's work you learn a lot of us basically his music going yeah and oh no some typing up parts of welcome here anyway this drill these are just think Oh these are writers that were very big and my life and the lives of people around me so yeah I wanted to learn from the best I guess and that was one way to do it but I was quite serious when you run talker I guess you did right box in here oh he would and what did it come from he just wanted to connect and say send me some money oh cool I didn't say that remember this yes you did no I was a joke the guys are taking us know but I think it's part of how money I was part of a the thinking hubris of the necessities even before the thinking we have what okay that glowing eyes I connected previously with uh-oh I will call Jim James rest of you like dream worry is heaven in Virginia yeah and the times where it's all the times it give me his number and ask him why the Soviet Army chorus what to being wetter than country via well there that was outrageous what you learning to do it it got like month yeah I like this to go pitching I'm trying to get yeah but I'm funny at the other side of it now yeah until you get into all Jake my phone's ever every three days but because of this book or because oh no middle they want to talk to you well they is a public good but I think that slays the six things were Tywin like when I applied for a job and as governor American Samoa are you this was a letter to son Lyndon Johnson you know well why not exactly what but and without a price something as he just is now I really believe that I was a bad person son yeah well isn't he could probably make an argument I did I know I thought I was doing the running until when I got this off about his Vietnam policy yeah to hug you and say take my name off the list and if that was hubris well but I think of the sixties was it wasn't it what was it I mean it says all right it was a row hubris or something else or I got an episode where you believe that the authorities are really high on your side yeah I don't remember four times we will it with Kennedy George arity get a belief that if you could get over the White House fence you know what a fight to it and run crazily across the yard dodging Secret Service people then if you made it to the White House but surely would say come on you know who are thank you they were safer in other way if they didn't get you before we got to the door you are home for the guy on the top as I was really gonna be your son like if you can run through that yeah of course well I was excited as these winners of this book I was just it was my way of running through it I believe that was a Johnson would get even well Larry O'Brien into them yeah exactly no it's not too general yeah that's Emily is a special assistant right right a professor Jack Canyon State on him and the daughter always better general in the Jewish world so do you be a right well brighten every grace done to you but there's no but when he wrote back I thought he was serious you know what having to try to charge up some white linen suit now do you have any it sounds like I'm your priest but here goes plays role for yesterday room well I don't know but I just I can't even I'll try you says all that talent there has it been used well or squandered give me could I have been even a harder and brighter I could have been no no I hired Brian I just you know I read these letters and read these letters and they're huge talent I would have to say I did it so it's like to be identified recently on Twitter recess of loquitur yeah and I have probably still miss Phyllis you can imagine how many Corrections I've had before where Department of languages all other people say with me on the idea over all right you know at the final day of reckoning he says or she says honor have you done everything and the best with what I gave you have you could i hide black gesso under a bushel yes probably or chief head ah I gave you the did you hold brought away and what's your best evidence know that you used it well well but then I suppose I'm on trial nobody trying to get in I got the key no you know the voice is not gonna have it either I wasn't had the key well I'll just tell you now just between us I don't even open a mine right here with that I am a old man I why I rode man the road man for the Lords of firm yeah the great whole yeah
