i love the m1 macbooks that should come as no surprise to anybody that watches this channel but what are the best ways to get the most out of your macbook what are the best tips and tricks that i've discovered over the past few months let's find out [Music] i don't even know why this is here what's up everyone i'm everyday dad and if i can figure it out you can figure it out so there are a lot of cool things that the new macbooks can do this is my macbook pro 13. so today i'm going to go through my favorite tips and tricks for how to get the most out of them here we go let's set it all up can you see it you should be able to see it over there we got lots of angles today because that's just the easiest way to do these things that's the way to make it the most exciting my very first tip is if you have a messy desktop like i do you know sometimes we don't have the best file management on our desktop there's a really easy way to clean this all up it's called stacks all you have to do is right click hit use stacks look at that it moves it all into such a nice managed way it takes all your images and collapses them on each other takes all your movies and collapses them on each other and if you like gary but i really want to go back and forth between this nice neat view of stacks and the way that i had it because that's how i know how to find everything you just unuse sex and it goes right back the exact way you had it isn't that so nice i like that i use that all the time when i'm making youtube videos and i don't want you all to judge me too harshly for how messy my desktop gets i'm like no this is how clean i'm always this neat and nice that's probably that's definitely a fabrication so that's the very first tip the second one the most annoying thing about mac os big sur bar none are the notifications i don't know what it is about them but i they just drive me absolutely crazy they're always coming in all the time check it out like here will will force us to get a notification so you can see what i'm talking about see they come up there's no way like if you have a whole bunch of them there's no way to clear them all out you got to go through and click on this x and sometimes when you go to click on the x the x magically vanishes and then you accidentally click on the thing itself then it brings up the whole thing that you didn't want and so that's kind of a pain in the butt but there's a few things you can do to take care of those so one we can go over to notifications and you can see for each individual like app or function the computer does you can change how each and everything actually shows you notification i really like this because i like having control over what my computer is doing and this really lets you see like okay facetime i do allow notifications i allow them on the banners i allow them on alerts you can see all the ways that i let them happen i will keep them on banners because that's what i like firefox is not allowed to have notifications but let's say you do want notifications but you don't want them to be as annoying as they normally are there's another way that you can do this where if we bring up the widget screen you can see we have all of these notifications over here and this is what's called quietly so it delivers them quietly where you still get the notifications but it shows them to you where you have to go looking for them so if i'm just sitting here using the computer and i'm trying to find my latest systems notifications i go over to my widget doc and i can see all of these cool things i really like this deliver quietly is probably one of my new favorite features inside of mac os it's it's a long time coming that we should have been able to do this but something else i want to mention while we're over here is the widget dock you can check this out you can set it up to do all sorts of cool stuff much like on ios or ipad os we can have our calendar we can have weather you can see all of the different time zones over here check the stock markets if you're checking out stocks i'm not really a stock person screen time i don't really want to see screen time and you can see here all of the cool widgets you can get you can choose between small medium large widgets i like widgets i like that apple is starting to embrace widgets you can see for the folder and the notes world clock and you can set all the stuff up look even your photos check out that handsome devil right there who's that guy right there that's uh that's the everyday dad what he's running because i run to keep myself sane and yeah i like widgets and here's how you can use all of the widgets but this dock does a little bit more than just widgets but there's also cool things that you can do with like the banner header up here you can already see already in the command control system area up here where you just click on this it brings up a whole bunch of options which you can even customize what you can see in here and you get all sorts of great things that you can control your wi-fi your bluetooth your airdrop what it's set to contacts only to everybody and here's a really cool one and this is kind of like a mini tip but this is keyboard brightness you can change and manage how bright your keyboard is i like just the standard default thing where it's basically turned all the way up you can also change how it works it'll bring you straight into the keyboard options in here where you get even more and that's what i really one of the things that i like about mac os big sur is when you click on like a quick icon if you want more customization you want more functionality in regards to that topic it really brings you there quite quickly so you see i clicked on the battery but from right there we can go straight into the battery preferences where i can see everything from usage history the battery itself power adapter i can even go in and check like battery health so if i want to see how healthy my battery is look it's still at 100 which i would hope because this macbook's only a couple months old but you can also see that i've got the battery percentage here at 100 and there's a really cool way to do that so we go to settings dock and menu bar so you can see we've got all the options from the dock and the menu bar up here we go down to battery and you can show percentage you can even show in the control center if you really want to the control center right here 100 but this allows a whole range of customization inside of your macbook you can see you can customize the wi-fi how it shows up in there you can customize the bluetooth the airdrop do not disturb which is a another phenomenal thing that my phone's basically always on when work's over when i'm done with work for the day do not disturb zone because i don't like that we have already had the conversation about notifications right keyboard brightness again screen mirroring display you just from here you can change all sorts of stuff and then it's it's this symbiotic relationship right where the doc controls that like command bar thing and it's all like interwoven and which it's so nice because you can go from just i like how that button looks that's what i want and then you can dive right into the menus so quickly and that's how you get the battery percentage up there long story long i like giving you the context for the tips too not just the tips specifically the next tip is you saw when i went to widgets all i did was i pressed into this corner to have the widget shows up and here's another really cool thing this is called hot corners i don't know why they call them hot corners but it's really cool and it's kind of weird how you go in to find them so you got to go into desktop and screen saver and you go to screen saver which you can have screen savers now and then you go down to hot corners now that means when you take your mouse and you put it into one of these corners an action happens and you can set it for all four corners so you can see i've got start screen saver when we go up to upper right hand corner starts the screen saver when i go to the left it brings up all of my active desktops and then you can set it to do start screen saver i don't know why it has disable screen saver maybe that's just to set us that the screen saver never turns on that's kind of weird you can set it to mission control so now we've got mission control up you can see it pops down mission control notification center launch pad i put the display to sleep lock screen all sorts of stuff so i really like this because it's is it that big of a deal no you can always use your keyboard to set a lot of these notifications but it's just nice to okay hey there's my notifications hey i'm getting ready to go let's set the screen saver going i come back hey i need to see all my desktops it sounds like such a small thing but i really like these little usability features if there's one thing that i will say about mac os big sur that i've really enjoyed it's usability they make it so nice and you get so many cool things to do inside of the system and here's something while i'm here i want to show you i get asked questions all of the time where i get the wallpapers when we make these videos i only ever use the official wallpapers for whatever brand we're talking about so if you're looking to see how to get all of the macos wallpapers that i talk about or even this wallpaper right here just inside the mac os wallpapers you go to desktop you go to change wallpaper and then you can pick all these cool things i really really like the wallpapers from big sur they're probably my favorite wallpapers that mac has ever had this one you see in basically all of my thumbnails because this is one of my favorite backgrounds of all time i love i don't know what it is about this background but i love it but i've also really enjoyed going through these like cartoony kind of landscapes i enjoy them an awful lot and you can see they'll dynamically change throughout the day so as the day goes on the wallpaper will change to be kind of like how it is outside the next tip has to do with your online security like your online safety to find out like what websites are tracking you i use safari the mac os browser and in that you can see you get this little thing right here this is the security settings where if when you go to a website you click on it it will show you if that website is containing any trackers and you can then go in to see what websites are currently tracking you you can see that when i go to techradar.com we've got 114 trackers and you can see what trackers they're doing so google analytics basically follows me google it seems follows me throughout the the entirety of my internet um traveling but it's really important to know which websites are tracking you and why they are tracking you what i really like about apple's new push for privacy is they give a lot of this functionality and a lot of this information these tools to you to one prevent websites from tracking you you can see that in the last 30 days how much safari has stopped websites from tracking me and two it shows you what trackers they are so it's nice to know you got it like internet security your information security is starting to be very very very important not just for us online creators who have like these brands that we're trying to protect and we don't want people to like hack our accounts and stuff like that but even just your own normal like track like when my son's watching youtube i don't want websites tracking him so i really like the security tools inside of ios but you know for example here mac os okay just a couple more tips to talk about and this one you've heard me talk about in a lot of these videos i've mentioned how with the new m1 macbooks you can use both iphone and ipad apps well here's the tip is how to do that so we go to the apple app store let's say i'm looking for luma fusion which is the video editing software that i use on my ipad you can see mac apps there is no lumafusion there's no what are you doing gary gary there's nothing that but you can see here we have mac apps and we have iphone and ipad apps you just click on this and now you have access to apps that you would find on the ipad i'm pointing to my ipad here because it's controlling my camera you can find apps that will run on the ipad or run on the iphone and you can use most of those some developers do not allow their ios apps to be run on mac os but for the most part look here's lumen fusion you can find it right there boom it's so so handy it's so handy you don't need to have an ipad to run ipad os stuff you can have your macbook do it for you value i love it okay and the last tip that i want to talk about today is if you've been in mac lan for a while you're going to be like gary while you can talk but this is not even a tip or trick this is just something that people know but if you i don't only talk about apple stuff here i talk about both windows and i talk about apple so if you're new to apple welcome welcome to the team this is one of my favorite things ever you saw me doing this earlier this is called spotlight search all you have to do is hit command space it brings up this little bar this bar will let you do everything inside of your computer you're looking for settings you're looking for a specific file you're looking for an application you can run everything through this once you get in the habit of hitting command space to search for stuff this is the only way you'll interact with your computer from now and you saw we went to settings by just typing in settings brings it right up let's go to firefox i don't have to click on firefox let's say i don't have firefox in my dock down here all i have to do is hit command space and i can find it that way close tabs let's find a program that i don't have open right here davinci resolve i have to know how to spell it i guess there you go boom davinci resolve and now it will open so seamlessly and so easy windows does have something similar with their little search bar in the lower left hand side but it's not as functional and it's not as easy to use as spotlight search i really i'm telling you this is how i operate my computer basically period so yeah these are all of my favorite tips and tricks the way that i interact with my macbooks every single day but what are some of your favorite tips and tricks leave me a comment below leave absolutely right now go ahead and leave me a comment below and let me know your favorite tips and tricks because i would always like to find new ways to make this even easier to use i'm telling you i am telling you i don't know everything i 100 do not know everything and i learn a lot from interacting with you all the comments so please let me know what your favorite tips and tricks are maybe you'll be able to share some with somebody else and somebody else will be able to find their new favorite tip and trick and if you like this video and you'd like to see what
