cooking with a through hiker another episode where we don't actually cook anything and still wind up with one of the best hiking meals you've ever seen except this time we're making a tasty trail snack well through hiking you don't often have the time to really sit down and cook you have 2,000 miles to hike so you snack and you snack a lot people who run marathons or even up to 100-mile races and more frequently consume all of their calories or at least most of their calories through a liquid form now I'm not saying don't eat that's pretty silly but why not include some of that into our hiking world isn't it a really efficient way of consuming calories to both have the hydration and the water we need but also to be getting fuel from that which is going to strengthen us for the miles to come so today we are making a molto mix [Music] maltodextrin is a flavorless carbohydrate made from starch and it is both very easy for your mind and body to use as fuel [Music] [Music] it provides you with a steady stream of energy that also helps you avoid bonking or hitting the wall as you transition into burning fats from other foods that you are consuming and since it isn't sugar like what most hikers are consuming for snacks you don't crash from it either [Music] in other words it's an extremely efficient fuel source so let's make some now I use about two ounces of the Malto dextran for every one ounce of Gatorade powder today I'm just using a small little propel packet the Gatorade is nice because it provides electrolytes to an otherwise nutritionally void energy bond also since the malted extern has no flavor the Gatorade or propel or whatever you so choose adds that as well typically I would put an entire bag like say three ounces worth of malt oh and Gatorade into a one and a half liter bottle but today I'll just use the smaller bottle and a little bit less and then I usually give it a good shake and let it sit for maybe a half an hour after about just a couple of minutes most of this will have dissolved and I'll start drinking it I'll drink about half of it right then and then after the 30 or so minutes the rest of it will have completely dissolved and I can finish my drink now when I fill up an entire one and a half liter bottle with three ounces of my concoction here my Gatorade and my malt Oh two parts malt oh one part Gatorade it's about 700 calories that I can drink throughout the course of the day so I usually start my day with something like this and it truly is an energy bomb places you can buy the Malto dextran is online and you can get bags upwards of 50 pounds which is what I got which is a crazy amount of this stuff which looks like Coke you can also buy bags that are a lot smaller like 4 pounds or 5 or 7 pounds I definitely think this is a worthwhile venture for anyone who is looking for like a very easy snack while on trail very easy calories to consume I personally loved the stuff I thought that the Malto itself was totally tasteless so it just tastes like you're drinking Gatorade powder and then the result is ridiculous amounts of energy so while other foods are really hard to get down because you're climbing mountains you're exerting a lot of energy maybe you're in a hundred degree desert this will always be something that will go down really easily really smoothly and provide you the energy you need to keep moving so I first heard about this through reading some trail journals about a guy with the trail name Malto and I guess he was on that really kind of made it come to be but honestly all this is is the same thing as what runners you see are consuming those little gel packets or goo packets or there's tailwind that you put in your drink it's basically the same thing but a lot cheaper and something that you can essentially mass-produce yourself but when I was first reading about molto the guy I thought what he was doing was possibly something really complex and at that time I didn't realize truly how simple this is and it's just two ingredients that are both very easy to find and come by so if you wind up trying this stuff which I hope you do then I hope you enjoy it as well it's really simple to make really easy to find I don't see how you couldn't enjoy it because it just tastes like you're drinking flavored water and you wind up getting like 600 700 calories out of it in the process [Music] so thank you for joining me on another cooking with the through hiker or cooking with Jupiter maybe next time we will actually cook something now it is raining and I'm a few miles away from my car and I got a skedaddle but first check out this turtle hey turtle bye turtle
