in this video we're gonna go over my backpacking gear in detail gear that i've spent six years and three thousand miles dialing in this backpack has a fully enclosed two-person tent a 25 wider air pad a frame pack with a half inch of padding a sleep system that goes below 30 degrees a gas stove full rain gear and extra clothes and it all just weighs seven pounds without food and water if that seems impossible to you then just keep watching we'll also go over gear that i sometimes bring and lastly ultralight gear can sometimes be expensive so at the end of the video i'll go over some ultra light big four items that are still great but less expensive and will still get you to an amazing eight and a half pound base weight [Music] okay let's get you going deeper to the back country seeing more things without destroying your body starting with the tent the tint this year is the zpax duplex what's great about this tent is the great cross ventilation you get from having two doors which is important on hot nights and also helps limit condensation the dyneema fabric is up to 30 times more waterproof than woven fabrics and the extra two-person room is great when it's raining the major downside is cost it's expensive but i have an alternative at the end of the video that's much cheaper the backpack again is the ks40 from ks ultralight no other pack this light can carry 27 pounds of weight the ks40 carries this weight well due to these frame stays that run the length of the pack and transfer forces to the hip belt and also from this pad pocket where a half inch of cushioning lives 27 pounds is the max weight i'll carry on five day trips so i see no need to buy backpacks rated to 35 or 40 pounds an example of this is the hyperlite 2400. the pack itself weighs 2 pounds and carries 40 pounds so it's way more packed than an ultralight hiker actually needs ks also has 30 different pack customizations no other pack maker does that now then i sent him this white pack material that he does not carry so i recommend the 200 denier dyneema that looks like this my sleeping quilt is the 30 degree noon attack rql quilt there's a reason they have a four month waiting list and it's in the details it features baffles that are narrower tapered and well stuffed ensuring the down insulation is locked in place keeping you warm all night details like differential cuts foot shaped foot boxes and waterproof necklines also push them ahead of competitors to me quilts are better than sleeping bags because they're strapped down to the sleeping pad leaving you free to toss and turn without disturbing the loft of the down the next is the sleeping pad a 25 inch wide therm-a-rest uber light i use this pad but it has the thinnest material ever used in a pad and i still feel like it needs a 1 8 inch foam pad underneath it to protect it regardless of which pad you use i like 25 inch pads which are 25 wider than normal sleeping pads good sleep to me means tossing and turning so blood can move through my tissues which is something i cannot get on narrower pads full comfort means not skimping on sleep gear real quick do me a favor and hit the like button if you hit it every time i pass a hiker blasting music on a bluetooth speaker i will slap them just for you okay that was a big four so let's now go through the rest of my packed gear the next piece of gear i think will never be replaced it's the gossamer gear 1 8 inch foam pad it protects my air pad prevents my air pad from slipping around on the tent floor adds sleeping warmth and as a backup pad if my air pad pops during the day i grab it out of my ks40 and use it as a sit pad a pad to nap on and if things get real cold i can wrap it around my torso or legs to keep warm no other piece of gear does so many things yes it is true the stakes i use are the rutalocura sorex stakes and the eastern nanos stakes are variable though and i change them up depending on where i'm going also for the duplex tents two extra tie outs i always use a rock or log to tie them off for my pillow i use the big sky pillow it's only 1.5 ounces but has great surface area height and durability use your buff around it to make a pillow case it can also be turned into a cam planer by strapping your head lamp to it and pointing the light into the pillow and turning it on next let's go over my rain gear and my extra clothing new this year's the skylight gear sil poly rain jacket this is perfect for brief afternoon rainstorms in the mountain west it weighs three ounces and even at that it has room to layer underneath it and has great mechanical venting from large pit zips for rain pants i use the mont belle versa lights they're warmer than wind pants allowing me not to bring long underwear on a lot of trips they have a warm leg closure they offer rain protection that won't limit the miles that i want to do and they can block mosquitoes as well i use rain pants mainly to keep warm in cold temperatures if it's super rainy i'll do about 10 miles call it a day set camp listen to podcasts about scary things it's what i do for walking and sleep insulation i use the discontinued patagonia lightweight kapolein tights if i was buying today i would go with rab forged leggings as they're almost as light and they have enough insulation to hike out on a 25 degree morning for insulation while walking or sleeping i use the skylight gear alpha direct hoodie the hype surrounding the alpha direct material is mostly justified under a shell can be very warm almost so warm you can leave your puffy at home for most trips but it can also dump heat quickly when ventilated on a cold morning i put my hiking shirt right over this and start walking until it's warmer out the one downside is that it will shed a little bit over time and do not attempt any bushwhacking in this as the material likes to catch on branches for installation when i'm sitting around and to help out my sleep system is the bora down jacket this jacket has 3.3 ounces of 850 fill insulation and that's a good amount of down for three season use make that your target when getting jackets be sure to get jackets that have wide baffles and infrequent sew lines count here on the board there's one two three four five six so lines this allows the baffle to get more thickness and loft away from your body it also means less so lines and that's good because at each of those sew lines there's no insulation they're literally cold spots so shy away from all those jackets that have a bunch of sew lines this jacket is discontinued so look to timmermade noon attack goosefit gear or if you need easy ordering look to montbell new to me this year are patagonia midweight liner gloves they're perfect for keeping morning cold off my hands and they also help in windy situations my spare socks and my hiking socks are in gingy liner socks i recommend using the thinnest sock you can get away with as thin socks keep foot sweat low and thin socks dry more easily next is my mosquito head net i also use it as a stuff sack for all my spare clothes and if i'm cowboy camping i'll use it in the evening if mosquitoes aren't too bad next let's go over my ditty bag items that's all my little accessories miniature kits and just little teeny tiny things all of this goes in my zpacks cuban ditty bag which weighs as much as a plastic bag but will last for years my headlamp is the nitecore new 25 i like it because it has enough battery and brightness to safely night hike for four hours if i need to when you night hike carry the headlamp in your hand and hold it low so it casts shadows over the rocks you're trying to avoid and also cast shadows over the cougars you're trying to avoid no not those cougars these cougars westcott scissors are all i've ever needed and they're super lightweight if you're looking for something more like an actual knife pick up the ultralight victorinox little vicky it's only 0.83 ounces i use dr broner's soap when you really need to clean your hands like really you need to clean your hands soap cleans way better than hand sanitizer a bamboo kids truth brush here there's no need to stick your fingers in your mouth while you're brushing your teeth there's no more need to cut down toothbrushes i always take matches and sometimes a bit lighter i've had lighters break on me that's why i carry high quality matches leukotape is special because it breathes and sticks to skin almost too well i use in conjunction with these sterile pre-pack gauze rolls for any cuts i have this is far more effective than the weak holding power of a band-aid the drugs i carry are anti-diarrheal antihistamines and ibuprofen in six years i think i've used four ibuprofen that's it i usually keep it just to help others my sew kit consists of some high quality guterman text 40 thread and a needle with a large eye try to pre-thread the needle so you don't have to fumble around with it when your hands are cold to push the needle through tough fabric like a thimble use your spoon it will give you leverage on that needle i carry cuban tape to repair my shelter but it sticks well to many things and i always carry one larger patch for shelter repairs to repair my air mattress and if my be free bag ever gets a hole i use tenacious tape flex tape it needs to be trimmed to shape so it's another good reason to have westcott scissors lastly i have a small compass and thermometer for general orientation if my gps app should fail i almost always carry paper maps and i make sure to look them over before the trip and honestly looking over maps after dinner is something i love to do okay let's go over my electronics now the extense battery weighs only 3.5 ounces but can give my phone almost one full charge which is enough to keep my phone going for four days on airplane mode and it can be fast charged in just under two hours if you need more power i also use the ten thousand milliamp nitecore nv1000 this anker 18 watt fast charger only weighs one ounce i recommend it through hikers to carry two of these instead of getting one two outlet charger it will help you find an open outlet in crowded trail stops it's lighter than two outlet chargers and you have a backup should one fail now let's go through my food and water system this year i switched to a gas stove mainly due to alcohol stoves being banned almost everywhere i like to hike but i still have my 500 milliliter tokes ultra light pot my rooted liqueur lid and now the brs 3000 the brs 3000 is not the most efficient stove but for most trips it's great to cook behind a wind block and it will boil water quickly lastly though this is a little expensive this is one of my favorite pieces of handmade backpacking gear this pairwood spoon from handmaderecycle.com is light has great bite volume and you can even order a custom handle length from them for food storage i use the 12 by 15 ply more food storage bags per bag these bags are way cheaper than the lock sack op sack and have done well keeping food odors down plymouth steel only sells them in packs of 50 so get a friend to buy these with next is my water filter system the catidin be free which is the lightest and fastest filter available with a 600 milliliter bag and a 1 liter plastic bottle i can walk 7 to 10 miles which is usually all i need to get to the next water source the wide bag opening makes it easy to scoop from low flow water sources and the bag is tough if the bag ever gets a hole in it i can patch it with the tenacious tape i showed earlier unlike the sawyer squeeze there's no o-rings to lose and the catidine doesn't tip over in my side pockets okay that's it for all of my gear now let's lay it all out see it and go over some of the things i sometimes bring on colder trips where i can't have the uber light fail on me i bring a thermarest x light the pad has double the toughness and double the warmth the x lights have gotten much quieter since their inception so don't let that turn you away in general the x-lite's main competitor the nemo tensor is more comfortable but you cannot beat the warmth for weight of the x-lite also a down jacket isn't always the best if it was in super rainy areas or in fringe seasons where i might hike in the coat i would carry a synthetic jacket instead of down there are great options from enlightened equipment and noon attack speaking of down jackets their hoods are not the best for sleeping in weather under 35 degrees because they leave too much of your face exposed that's why i use a down balaclava on cold trips they cinch down tight leaving just your mouth and nostrils exposed and balaclavas provide much better lateral face coverage if you have to hike in super cold and windy conditions when i finally replace my borah jacket it will be with a hoodless timbermaid jacket and the balaclava will come on every three season trip for all day cold rains i would not go with the skylight gear seal nylon jacket i would bring the mont belle peak dry shell which has gore-tex shake dry material that will never wet out in extended rain in hot and humid conditions i always go with an umbrella also variable is bug spray sometimes i don't take it i like to use mechanical means like pants and shirts to cover for bugs but sometimes i do bring bug spray lip balm i only bring when it's cold out and sunscreen stick always goes with me in very sunny locations sunscreen sticks are far better than lotions you're a hiker you're going to have dirty hands you don't need to get lotion on your dirty hike or hands instead use sunscreen sticks and apply it directly where you need it next when i can't get reliable phone service i always bring a garmin inreach mini it's great for letting people watch your progress messaging trail angels for rides and calling for rescue for yourself or others i always cringe at the thought of needing to help somebody but you can't get them help that is a really bad feeling next if i'm unsure if i need pants or shorts i'll carry the northwest alpine volo pants they're made for rock climbing so they're tough they breathe well at 50 cfm and they're dense enough to stop mosquito bites they're almost a hybrid piece for me where they can act like long johns or pants okay if you want to see more trip dependent things check out my ladder pack below lastly i know the ultralight gear has a reputation for being expensive and sometimes it can be but ultralight is really about bringing fewer things so it can also be cheaper so let's go over some cheaper but still very good items for a tent the six moon designs lunar solo weighs only seven more ounces than my tent has a lot of internal volume barn doors for great venting has a great storm resistant shape needs only one pole to set it up and uses seriously strong materials that can last thousands of miles for a backpack i recommend the 160 drop 40 backpack by dan durstan dan is an ultralighter who does ultralight sensibly his pack is a perfect entry-level backpack for those building ultralight skills the best part about his backpack is it will hold its value well so if you want to sell it down the road you'll get a lot of money back for a sleeping pad i recommend the climate insulated static v light it's 23 inches wide is usefully warm has my favorite 30 denier fabric for durability and is still under 20 ounces for sleeping quilts nothing still beats the hammock gear economy quilts they have a great price point vertical baffles a roomy foot box and the option to add overfill one thing i like to bring up in these huge gear videos is that the gear that you have is good gear so the more important thing is to go out and use that gear treat the trails well donate to your favorite trailer organization my favorite trailer organization is the pct association it's linked on my website and overall just have fun okay if you don't know me i obviously like to do gear review videos i'm a brand new doctor of physical therapy and i cover some physical therapy topics here and i'm starting to do trail videos so that's what you'll see here so please like and subscribe it's a huge favor to me it lets youtube know that you've liked this material you can also follow me over on tick tock where i sometimes do just little bit different things over there and of course i'm also on instagram where i post behind the scenes stuff and like little hints about what i may be doing in the future okay so that wasn't so bad go look at my ladder pack my website get a pen paper start thinking up some new gear ideas all right thanks for watching
