[Music] if you google the term beginner guitar thousands upon thousands of results come up with people's opinions on what a good beginner guitar is well here's the thing there's no such thing as a beginner guitar I'm hearing advanced music in Burlington Vermont on the guitar store tour and this is a really big store full of a lot of different awesome guitars and I thought that it would be the correct time to address something that is just incorrect there's a fallacy in the guitar community created by those who don't actually play guitar I think this preconceived notion that if you've never played the guitar before then you need to buy a cheap guitar and in an expensive guitar this is just wrong and I think it promotes people actually giving up the instrument for example one of the first articles that comes up on google suggests that a beginner should start out with an acoustic guitar under two hundred fifty dollars with steel strings that is the worst advice possible first of all inexpensive acoustic guitars in that price range are generally hard to play so if you've never played a guitar why would you try and play the hardest one possible it seems a little backwards and this isn't to say that you can't find a good guitar in the 100 to 200 dollar price range nor should you just completely reject those guitars however if you are starting out on guitar there is no reason to target that price range which is what I am trying to convey the difference between $150 guitar and a $350 guitar is massive the difference between a $350 guitar and $1000 guitar is not quite as big and then after that it's all pretty much up to your tastes but that one tear up if you can just save up a couple hundred extra dollars which is not a lot of money in the long run then you will have a more enjoyable experience learning the guitar and that is why I think the phrase beginner guitar and it being synonymous with low price inexpensive guitars that is just wrong and unhealthy and I condemn it so now that we've learned that there is no such thing as a beginner guitar and you should buy the best guitar you can for the best price you can and not necessarily break the bank but also not just target the less expensive guitar just because you think oh I'm a beginner that's what I have to do which brings me to the three P's this is how you evaluate what guitar to buy whether you're a beginner intermediate advanced or guitar God everyone can follow the three P's which is price playability and prettiness if you want to start playing guitar and you buy the least expensive one possible thinking that well I might quit then guess what you're probably gonna quit if you buy something that is a little bit more expensive it gives you this little thing called accountability which is important as any musician would know who has worth their salt it's important to be accountable playing an instrument as a discipline you have to have discipline in order to be a great musician in this case a great guitar player and that means being accountable to practice and having motivation to do so will be a lot easier if you enjoy the instrument that you pick up instead of oh that's just a hundred dollar piece of crap I I'm gonna quit anyways so let's break down the three P's and understand that this applies to any musical situation any genre any style of guitar any type of guitar player there are no beginner guitars there are no expert guitars there are only guitars so in this video I'm gonna walk through advanced music here and pick up a variety of different guitars and let you know what I think about them and what you should look for in a guitar while keeping in mind the fact that no matter what skill level you are there are certain things that you should look for in a guitar that applied to any genre any style most importantly any person so the first thing we'll focus on is price like I said between the 275 to $700 range that's why I would recommend if this is your first guitar buying journey but there's also some great guitars if you are looking for your second or a third or seventy third guitar so let's put it to the test I would say if you can afford an extra couple hundred bucks from a two hundred dollar guitar to a four hundred dollar guitar is a pretty big difference so this one's 200 this is the bear the bear minimum now we're gonna find one for I don't know 150 or 250 bucks more I got this one let's see if we can tell the difference between these two so since we have the price 200 bucks that's obviously a nice price for anyone's wallet but we're then gonna move to the second P which is playability and the first thing that I notice is the frets are a little bit I don't want to say sharp but I can feel them as I run my hand up and down the guitar neck so that is just something all the negative aspects of a guitar you're going to see increase over time and especially if you're a beginner and you're not playing as often as guitar sits and collects dust the parts of it that you don't like are just going to become a little bit more annoying so between the frets and the feel of this wood I don't know if you can hear this but this would kind of feels a little sandpapery the one thing I will say is the guitar setup is great it's definitely gonna play in tune because it's new [Music] [Applause] [Music] actually plays really nicely as the strings start to wear this feel of the neck is going to become a little bit more difficult to tolerate I would say so that brings me to the next bump up in price range so immediately we have a more rounded neck I don't have any of the issues with the frets that I felt on the previous guitar and this one is a little heavier honestly I like to look at this one better but that last one the prettiness factor that's all completely subjective we'll get to more of that later the neck feels a lot better under my fingertips I don't feel that kind of composite wood feel I know that the previous neck was I think real wood laurel wood but this is a maple neck and I prefer this feel [Music] now if you notice a lot less hum even with the single coil let me just give you a quick comparison the subtle difference there but something to keep in mind could be an electronics thing that again with a more inexpensive made guitar that tends to be one of the first things to address is a dirty pot or a crackling somewhere in the guitar and that is absolutely something that can discourage a beginning player so let's hear what this one sounds like [Music] [Applause] the playability on this one is better it feels more sturdy and more reliable and I think that's the difference between an inexpensive guitar and a guitar in like only $150 more and I think you have at least tripled the quality of that $200 price range so what's gonna happen when we move up to say the five to six hundred dollar price range so here we have a $450 jazz master and this is a squire but it's like one of the fancy Squires so there's an association with some of the brands of the big guitar companies like PRS has their se line fender has their Squire line and Gibson has well Epiphone so with all these lower echelon guitar brands you don't have to think of them as necessarily lower quality because like I said once you get into this price range I think this is really the sweet spot for quality so whether it's a Fender Squier or a PRS SE which we'll get to next or Epiphone which is a lower tier of Gibson the association that any of those brands are in some way lesser or cheaper is inaccurate and said they're just less expensive but still made with the same quality in mind to deliver a good end product and this guitar is a great example of that because again a nice girthy guitar this neck feels much better than even the previous two necks and I think you're starting to see a pattern that the first thing you should really look for in a guitar is how the neck feels because that in my opinion is the most important part of the guitar is the neck itself and I think that when you have a great neck that's going to really dictate how well you play so with this guitar not only does the construction feel great but there's a variety of different tonal options [Music] now a guitar like this 589 still in that sweet spot price range for a beginner guitar or just a great guitar overall this is a PRS SE 245 and let's see how it feels [Music] this is uh Scott some sauce [Music] the difference between this guitar and the $200 guitar that we started out with $389 and understandably that maybe a lot for some people but really if you think about it if you want to play the guitar for the rest of your life this guitar would be the only one you need whereas the first one that I showed you probably wouldn't be able to get you past a certain point as far as the playability as far as the enjoyment and that's really I think the crux of my whole argument a little bit of extra money goes such a long way in the very beginning price range of guitars so right there is where I would stop if you are actually just a beginner starting out looking for a guitar and you don't have all the money in the world I think a sweet spot right in the four to six hundred dollar range because keep in mind you also want a nice amp some guitar cables things like that you can start to spend a lot of money and that's actually where we're gonna go next because I classify things as 200 below probably not even worth it 400 to let's say 800 is the medium to perfect zone and then there's everything else because everything else when it comes to playability is pretty much going to be spot-on when it comes to price it's pretty much gonna be a lot of money or no money depending on your financial situation and as far as the prettiness goes well again that's something that is up to you maybe you do like the look of that orange $200 guitar and there's nothing wrong with that but we're gonna see what advanced music has to offer in the absurd price range just you know for comparison so we've dipped into the $1,000 price range this is an SE pauls guitar one of the new ones from the PRS SE line and well I think it's pretty it's pretty 'no said an all-time high and you could feel the exact opposite but that's what makes the subject so subjective so the cool thing about when you get into certain price ranges and this can actually be seen in the jazz master that I played a little bit earlier where there's a ton of different variety when it comes to the tone capabilities so not only does this guitar feel great I have a lot of experience playing this particular model the settings are really versatile so you can use this guitar for clean ethereal type things or you can use it for hardrock humbucker type things for example [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] as you can hear there a lot of bite but then when we go down to the clean I can actually pop this into a split single coil [Music] ah [Music] or a full single coil [Music] so when you get into the thousand dollar and Beyond Price ranch this is when the difference between the guitars is primarily going to be from a personal taste as you'll see moving forward all right so this is a Fender 60s style tele with a $2,000 price tag and you can definitely feel it in just the overall design of the guitar in the way the neck feels it's got this kind of lacquer approach on the neck however keep in mind this is the third time I've had to tune this guitar since picking it up I didn't have to tune any of the previous guitars more than one time always be wary that just because the guitar is expensive doesn't mean it may have some things about it that are less than ideal it does sound awesome though [Music] all right this guitar is $3,000 and this actually might be worth $3,000 because it sounds pretty awesome even compared to all the great ones I played already there's something about this one that just maybe it's my ear perceiving things differently because I know this is an expensive guitar that it sounds different but you be the judge [Music] [Music] [Applause] so the moral of the story is that there are no beginner guitars there are just guitars some guitars play a little better than others but that doesn't always have to do with the price one thing you can be sure of is that if you can at all muster an extra couple hundred bucks you know it may seem like a lot to some people but if you just wait to start your guitar journey until you can get to that first echelon of price range that I think is the sweet spot then you will have a much better experience and if you're already a great guitar player or a hobbyist or whatever you are the next time you go in search of a new guitar maybe consider the three P's the price the playability and of course the prettiness and of course if you're ever in the burlington vermont area go check out Lake Champlain it's pretty sweet and of course come here to advance music it's really really cool keep shredding [Music] [Applause] [Music]
