my next guests have had quite a career most successful the singers and songwriters and as well as their own hit recordings their compositions have been recorded by people like Frank Sinatra Elvis Presley Mandy Williams Glen Campbell Tom Jones hundreds of others they're currently on a concert tour in the United States and they're appearing this Thursday night at uh Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and they're going to be hosting NBC's Midnight Special one week from Friday here on NBC this is their latest album called life in a tin can it's always a great kick to have him on the show would you welcome the Bee Gees [Applause] [Music] thank you maybe there's a reason why we broke up my life to something new but I must have been asleep but then I woke up working out my eye we're still with you all the things the things I wish I wish I could not be someone or someone and I would be respected in the prime of my life I'll do everything right I'll begin wouldn't that be something or something I would get a reputation [Music] in the prime of my life I'll do everything right I'll begin [Music] foreign [Music] now the head's all gone I pushed it all behind I am the world is [Music] someone [Music] and now what beauty is in the prime of my life I'll do everything right I'll begin wouldn't that be something or something around in the prime of my life I'll do everything right I'll begin [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] thank you all of a sudden I saw a new morning [Music] my friends are waiting for me 16 people are waiting to get me hoping to take me outside [Music] [Applause] [Music] desperately I must keep on we'll always hope entertain me sad Ness [Music] tonight [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] all of a sudden I saw in your mind [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome back those are two fine numbers are those both from the current album no one is the first the second one we did yeah which is also the new single and the other one we is on the newest album which will be released about Mitchell you fellas compose all of Europe yes all of your stuff don't you I got to get the name I know if Marie's Robin and Barry Morris Robin and Morrison Barry you do a good deal of the uh well welcome to take uh Robin and me take a major part in that in the writing Morris helps a lot with the melody line and uh Rhythm instruments he plays a lot of instruments he plays piano and bass you were messing this there's so many groups around and you guys have given up more or less playing what you call the Stadium large places because you felt that um you weren't giving the audience really what they came to see because you lost all that intimacy that's not that what the biggest thing is that you get an A Stadium of 15 000 people and uh you get about three thousand three thousand really listening right and the rest are out of touch because they're not in because they're not in uh really in communication right with you on the because you are just a soldier on on the on the stage I'm not as salty necessarily yeah but a person on the stage in which they are not they are only listening vaguely because they can hardly hear you they can hardly see you so they they tend to to carry on with their own activities yeah and uh with the other people they're really cute but you you also must enjoy it more when you have that rapport with the audience because if you're playing with somebody vaguely sitting 100 yards away do it you guys now you guys have had uh fantastic success and and well deserved how did it all start your family did it come from you've been in a musical I was nine and Morris and Robin was six when we started we started doing matinee theaters you know where you work after a film or before a film we used to get a shilling of time things have changed a lot of time what was the first big breakthrough was because you you came into popular at a time when there were hundreds and hundreds of groups we got our first big break in Australia 1962 the Chubby Checker show hi this is Chubby Checker remember me just think guys in 30 years you'll be selling those records on television remember no thank you you'll be coming up we're the Bee Gees remember this one they say where the whole record stars go when they die now you know where you're gone you'll be Nostalgia time you know in 20 years yeah are there any more uh youngsters in the family small the younger younger brother uh who's 15 and uh her sister who's older than you he didn't want you to say how old he was he didn't oh God because you see when he goes on tours with us he wants to get all the girls you know and now I've blown it so telling me he's only 15. well he tells him he's 18. does he also hope to to join in the group or get his own uh yeah eventually eventually it may happen because Andy is riding and he's singing you know so he's and he's playing a guitar so there's a chance in the future he'll develop and we'll be able to get a four-part Harmony in high school you're right now not all of you are married yes room you're all married yeah so do you have the well I don't think no there's a problem or not uh but uh when you were single you know a lot of a lot of the groups had the groupies it's a pleasant problem our road managers get them they get them before we do do you still have the fanaticism that a lot of the groups had in the early days the almost uncontrollable uh no amazing because they listen which is a good thing you don't have a lot of Screams they listen very much so during the songs and they show their enthusiasm afterwards and it's very nice then they really go mad absolutely mad after the song Because for a while you go to a concert and nobody could hear anybody from the opening number yeah so we had that you know but some of the fans that have grown up with us come and see us they like to listen right yeah that's good so we like that too they show their appreciation after the show you know which has been incredible on this tour I believe in New York right through what's your name do they carry on like this all the time no only on this show the atmosphere of the show you uh do you do you miss the Rapport you have with an audience live rather than television do you feel that it cuts oh we love it because then when you go on stage and you're actually working in front of say certain matches six thousand people or something depends on what you know place you're working you're actually seeing the people appreciate what they liked on the record you're actually seeing them to make friends with the audience that's the whole right oh he goes through the oil shake hands with everybody we like to do that we like to make friends then you have a wrap up all the way through the show right nobody shouts at all heckles you because that's great it's great all right we're gonna take a short break here and uh we're coming right back stay with us [Music] we are back now somebody mentioned something about a an acoustical number uh that you can do just uh just casually here you said it's tuned up your way what do you mean you play baseball tuning you play bass guitar mainly right he plays he plays bass it's the same old face can you tune in other words you don't normally tune it as a six-string guitar Tunes yeah well you know turns one of them down I don't know which one it is yeah you've done it again that's about as far as I've progressed on the guitar anyway is really getting it in tune you know we're getting any other uh the other guitars oh yes no more tuning all right okay we got one we got one here we go copies Now quickly okay we're gonna do a song called uh Massachusetts [Music] [Applause] [Music] three four feel I'm going back to Massachusetts [Music] some things telling me I must go home the day I left [Music] the light to San Francisco [Music] thank you and the lights all went down in Massachusetts they brought me back to see my way with you [Music] about the life in Massachusetts [Music] Massachusetts is one place I have seen [Music] thank you guys what is that little short naps are wonderful when you have to lay out aren't they that's why you see I stay in the background I wear these suits so everyone can see me I should mention before we have to say good night I'll do it when we come back we're gonna take a short break we're not coming back I want to mention that Richard Buck will be with us on Thursday night's show when we'll talk about Jonathan Livingston Seagull fellas I thank you very much have a good go at Santa Monica hope you come back and see us Bob thank you and we'll talk about that picture someday tomorrow night Charlton Heston and Rex reads UB Blake and Richard box thank you good night [Applause]
