if you've checked out tick tock lately you may have seen this recent trend [Music] and at first glance you may think to yourself hold on did the beach boys actually record apple bottom jeans before the version that we actually know the answer is obviously no this particular version was the youtube genius work of an individual named salvador peralta but in finding out about this it really kind of made me want to go okay the beach boys that's a group that i really have not checked out [Music] already this is super cool it's a basa kind of feel which is pretty rare coming from the beach boys let's just take a look at this intro because it's really really nice what do we got here [Music] beautiful oh [Music] nice that's really cool to give us a place to start for the melody not what you're expecting to hear interesting i had to fix a lot of things this morning cause they were so scrambled but now it's okay [Music] is that what that was i had to fix a lot of things this morning because they were so scrambled oh oh i get it i get it [Music] yeah there's a little tritone substitution thing going on right there right two five one or in this case it would be like uh three six two that's what we expected here and instead we get we've talked about tritone substitutions on the channel before but really quickly i'm just going to play the same exact thing in the right hand and i'm going to change the bass note 2 5 one right and again like i said in this case it's really more of a three six two but it serves the same purpose moving around the circle of fifths but watch what happens if instead of instead of f on the bottom we change that for its tritone i'm going to do the same exact thing in the right hand now i'm going to switch the f for its tritone which is b what's this it serves the exact same function but it gives us a nice little chromatic motion in the bass line beautiful instead of right we get that's a tritone sub it's beautiful it works great this is a great application of it i had to fix a lot of things this morning because they were so scrambled but now it's okay i tell you i've gone yes so we're using a sequence of two five ones but with the tritone subs right here this is a very very common usage in bossa nova you'll hear a lot of this stuff in the antonio carlos jobim a lot of the classic bossa nova standards imagine girl from iphoneima this is maybe a great application of this if we were to put this in the same key what carrying a flat so it'd be uh right and listen to what we have here same exact chord progression this is a great usage of some typical sounding bossa harmony so this is super cool and it's one of these things that like i never expected to hear from the beach boys i'm just not that familiar and when i heard this i was like whoa absolutely beautiful check it out let's move on to the next one [Music] yeah chromatic movement in the inner harmonies wow absolutely beautiful so this is our prayer it was composed by brian wilson in 1966 and it was originally intended for the album smile which is sometimes considered one of the most legendary unreleased albums in modern music history and philip lambert described this piece as every technique of chromatic harmony that brian wilson had ever heard or imagined we can hear so many interesting influences in this piece the counterpoint and a lot of the inner voice movement are just incredible these are not harmonies that are moving in the vertical stack so like when we write often times i'll take a melody and we kind of create a vertical stack of every melody now the problem here is that oftentimes you can get parts in the middle that are completely lifeless and boring i mean if we look at what i just played even that c was played for every single one of those melody notes that means that somebody would have had to sing that would have been their part that's not very interesting instead of that we hear every motion every voice is creating a movement is singing its own melody that you could probably pull out and isolate on its own and it would be interesting this is considered to be a more linear style of writing one of the great examples in jazz of this is the thad jones mel lewis orchestra thad jones had a way of arranging for the entire band where rather than writing a melody with all the parts underneath it can break each part as its own melody and that's how we wound up with so many really beautiful interesting harmonies in the thad jones mellows orchestra if you cut out a section of the vertical stack there are some times where notes don't make any sense and you're like well that doesn't really fit right there why was that put there but the reason is actually more of a melodic purpose and we're hearing a lot of that in our prayer we're hearing a lot of these inner voice movements that are creating their own melodies in and of themselves and especially a lot of these chromatic motions that really give a direction to these lines like listen to this absolutely beautiful writing beautiful composition work beautiful arranging we can hear there's some really interesting things there where like the melody moves from one note to one note and the harmony stays the same and the harmony moves while the melody holds we're having all these like back and forth call and response type of devices while utilizing a chromatic motion to create this resolution on that oh we're in between keys again but where the a to b flat somewhere in there minor chord that it resolves to and everything just kind of works its way down all with interesting parts no matter what part you're singing absolutely beautiful choral writing and not exactly what i necessarily expected from the beach boys [Music] now this is a style and it's a very beach boys i mean you hear this and you just you know it's the beach boys to be honest it's always been a style that i've not had any interest in at all i've always just been like oh god stuff like this and that's one of the reasons why i just never dove into the beach but to a lot of you i'm sure especially your fans of the beach boys everything i'm saying you're like yeah i know this is what this is what i've been saying to everyone i hear you now because here's what i love about this song in particular it's setting the stage for a sound that i was expecting to hear and then i didn't hear that sound and i heard something that made me go whoa check it out [Music] did not expect that something about [Music] you need any more proof that i don't have perfect pitch it makes so much sense but yet i don't know why i just with the setting the way that the song is set up i expected something simpler it's not that the harmony they used was complicated it's just if we're looking at b major right we're expecting that f sharp to be a dominant chord because it's the five in b major one two three four five right so that's the expected sound in all of the diatonic chords that go with it what we're not expecting is that oh it's such a smooth chord especially coming off of this right i i don't know to me it's just like using the chord based on the flat seventh here this a major seven wow i mean what a chord and then to drop the bass down to that f sharp to create an f minor seventh sound that is not what we expect to hear there of course that wouldn't work either but like i said in b major that f sharp is normally r5 chord it's normally a dominant chord which has a major third but here we've turned it into a minor seventh chord [Music] it's it's so good let's keep going [Music] everything is the avengers that's what it all comes down to like literally just everything is the avenger because we have uh we have c minor we have a major which is a really interesting change and yet again somehow we're getting to that a major so we're winding up on the v chord here but check it out watch this inner voice movement [Music] that can be along with the bass line the only thing that moves we start e and c sharp with the g sharp this makes c sharp minor right we go from here we move that up one to the a now it's a major move it one more and now it's f sharp seven our five chord leading back to our one chord that inner voice movement creates the entire chord change what is the avengers thing well if we take those same exact chords it's like you can find it and everything whatever let's keep going [Music] yes so beautiful here's something really interesting so if you guys are familiar with jacob collier's record in my room this is literally the title track on it now what's fascinating about jacob's version of this is how much he didn't change because obviously you know we know and love jacob for doing these crazy uh harmonic things and he definitely does some of it [Music] but so much of the song he just left exactly how it was in the original just with a little bit of a different groove and some different you know rhythmic things going on inside of it i thought it was a absolutely fantastic version so tasteful in the recognition of how sophisticated these harmonies already are [Music] [Applause] we love hearing vocal harmonies like this and this is just such a great usage of them i think it's a really great representation of why the beach boys are in some ways shockingly complex and sophisticated there's this sort of outward packaging of a happy-go-lucky carefree kind of sound and there are plenty of instances of super popular songs by the beach boys that are pretty simple but then when you start digging in and you find so many complex things like the few things that we've talked about today it just blows me away i'm like wow i did not know that this level of depth was here i would highly highly encourage you if you're not already a beach boys fan at least check out some of their maybe lesser-known things and search for that really complex sophisticated harmony because it is there and it's brilliantly used the composition in the beach boys is phenomenal and maybe they didn't write apple bottom jeans in 1964 but they wrote a lot of incredible music that is worth your time to check out even if you haven't
