seriously [Music] you can have so much fun oh okay does anyone want to buy a slightly used model three hello and welcome to another out of spec reviews video you join me with my Dad how's everybody doing uh this is out of spec Dave on YouTube of course we have a few out of spec channels and this is the cheapest Tesla you can buy today it is a model 3 standard range rear wheel drive with arrow wheels black interior white paint literally no options ticked absolutely but it comes with so much out of the box and there's actually so many benefits to this car over even nicer model threes so in this video we wanted to talk a little bit about why I think maybe you should consider buying this as really the best cheap or I should say entry-level Tesla it's not necessarily cheap but we'll get into the pricing in a moment and this is really kind of the best option on sale right now so let's talk about the model 3 standard range specifically with the lfp battery pack we'll explain that in a moment and why I think it's it's the one most people should buy well you join us in Pennsylvania with the cheapest Tesla on sale inexpensive not cheap cheap inexpensive it's not cheap and it's not really an expensive it's still 42 Grand we'll get into the pricing here in a moment all right um but tell us where we're at we're in Pennsylvania where you went to high school yes we are so we actually drove down Kyle and Anna flew in this morning from wherever the heck you were Denver to Newark Airport and we drove down to Wilmington Delaware for a different reason well that'll be on your channel that'll be on my channel um but we're so close to where I actually went for my Junior and Senior year of high school I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Westtown School here in West Town Pennsylvania and it's a beautiful campus here and I Kyle you've never actually seen Westtown School you've only heard about it forever so we just did a little tour of the campus and we decided to maybe make a little video about the uh the model three year old over here yeah well we were in the car talking and you know you've owned four model threes and you've owned a long-range rear-wheel drive a performance a standard Plus would not lfp with the NCM chemistry an older one and now this as your fourth model 3 you've owned two Model S's or no three Model S's three a model X and two model y's or one model y something one model y yeah and I've had two model threes and we always just keep coming back to these cars and yeah they are just now the gold standard so in this video we kind of wanted to talk about why I actually think this is the one to buy and it's the best one to actually ever come out on sale truly and they've just refined this product into truly The Benchmark we were chatting earlier about how imagine telling BMW even just 10 years ago that 3 Series would be you know not necessarily not competitive but just you won't see them anymore people aren't buying them uh they're buying these instead as a premium five-seater pretty large interior space vehicle yeah it's it's amazing we just on the way up on northbound on Route 202 here we stopped off at Otto's BMW and Mini which is an amazingly large dealership now but back then in 1979 my dad bought a BMW 320i and that was a huge deal you drive down the road people would flash their head like that was the common thing you would do because they were so rare um and and so you know had a white 320i was a four-speed rear-wheel drive and no one knew what they were they didn't understand that and then that became sort of the gold standard you know the car that everyone would would drive right mom actually owned the I would say most popular 3 Series generation after the E90 became the f-30 and I remember she had one of the first f-30s 328 with the four-cylinder engine that those were on every corner within two years of start of production like everyone had that new generation 3 Series here on the East Coast yeah and now everyone has model 3. the model 3s are super popular I keep coming back to this car because it's such a um it's for me they tend to be the place to go home to and and I'm just super comfortable with this car as much as I like the model y there's the posture the seating position everything just feels great in this car and so uh and the seat is very comfortable so so now you know our take where Tesla enthusiasts coming at you from a Tesla Enthusiast standpoint as to why we think the lfp is the way to go I mean we could we have and we can do and we should do more uh Tesla comparison test model 3 versus other electric sedans ionic six I'll be driving here in just a week or so and then you know of course model Y versus the very hot growing SUV electric segment but let me just take you on a tour of model 3 for those who might just be shopping now I know a lot of you are familiar with the car but of course it's a fully ground up uh platform that's electric but a lot has changed since startup production I would say almost every part on the car has been refined or changed or upgraded or improved over time so even little things like the wheel Arrow design has improved the cameras have improved since startup production the headlights have changed the way that the body panels fit the glass and you know double pane glass even on the standard base car there's so much you get value for money here so let's talk about the specs dad range is 270 miles two yeah two what shows up on the indicated range is about 272. and that's EPA rates EPA rated range if you charge it to 100 which you can do because it's an lfp and we'll talk about that in a second yeah yeah and uh but the efficiency is the real story here because when I'm driving this car at speed 65.75 allegedly maybe plus I'm in the mid 250 uh one hour per mile one hour per mile and so it's you know 3.9 kilowatts no miles per kilowatt hour I knew that I was just I was just quizzing you yeah you know what I mean sure so not quite four but easily so this car is super slippery but in the city you can get north of five miles per kilowatt hour if you're super gentle on it yeah absolutely I mean it really is crazy that a five-seat electric vehicle with as much performance as this and storage capacity and safety can even get close to five miles per kilowatt hour that's like Leaf numbers or original ionic it's crazy but one of the reasons that I bought this particular car is because I think this is the car that there's so many new cars coming out on the market whether it's the vws whether it's any of the egmp platform cars and to me if you're going to go off brand and when I say off-brain I mean off Tesla's brand this is the car that you should make sure you do the comparison against is it worth going off brand from a Tesla the base our rear wheel drive car to another different brand this this is the car to compare it to I believe right so you're saying if another vehicle can't match the specs or usability of this why even why even consider it and then there's another Factor here which is the charging which I know we're not really going to get into so much on this video but I think it's a it's a Tesla just it's just everyone knows it it just works every single time um or 99 of the time right not 100 not 100 okay we'll get into all of that ownership stuff so specs on this one battery pack capacity battery pack capacity this is 60.6 kilowatt hours total I think 57 and a half usable um and you're you're because it's an lfp chemistry let's explain that first of all no Cobalt you know big deal for just making sure that everything's ethical in the car not to say I don't know if it's I'd really be curious to do a whole deep dive on is Cobalt actually that bad half the story say it's terrible half the story say ah you're only complaining about it on your phone which contains Cobalt but good news this doesn't have any you don't have to worry about it do you know what lfp stands for lithium iron phosphate wait but I doesn't that's not an F sure but the answer is the word ferrous is equal to iron so this is a lithium iron phosphate battery and um from what I can tell it takes a little bit longer to heat up the battery pack when you're pre-conditioning that's actually not due to the lfp chemistry it doesn't talk about that that's only because you have a single motor to do this single motor okay I got you but but the good news is that you can charge this car to 200 well to 100 which is roughly 270 indicated range well let's explain that for new viewers most electric cars really love to be between 30 and 50 percent that's the sweet spot for ultimate longevity most people charge them to 80 percent every day seventy eighty percent every day I'd say is what our audience does some people follow Tesla's recommendation charge them to 90 every day you'll still be fine I mean the cycle life of these things are pretty incredible for me I'm a nerd so I never charge my cars much past 50 or 60 percent unless I have to uh this because it's an lfp needs to be fully charged not necessarily for a reason that many people might think it gets nerdy to explain why but lfp the way this battery chemistry is laid out there's very little voltage difference between dead and full and so for the car to know sort of what state of charge it's at for the BMS to be calibrated it needs to see top charge I see but the big benefit to lfp is you can do whatever you want to this battery and it will Outlast NCM for a while right there are downsides though so you can pretty much full charge this thing drain it supercharge it all the time Drive the crap out of the car and the degradation reports on these will be really interesting to see but I bet much better cycle life and degradation performance compared to any other Tesla the downsides which you've experienced are very poor charging performance when cold yes yeah I I would say the downside is you've got a really precondition the car way before you arrive to the destination Charter and in my case when I did this recently on my channel I wasn't far enough away from from the uh from the Supercharger so it didn't give it ample time to charge up the battery pack you mean heated up right to to heat off the battery the way model 3 does battery heating uh primarily is using the motors as waste heat right so in a dual motor model 3 if you live in a cold climate that'd be an all-wheel drive or performance they use both Motors running inefficiently to create about seven kilowatts of waste heat I know this sounds like jargon and new viewers but our nerds will get it this can only do about three and a half kilowatts of waste heat from the rear motor but I believe the Octo valve the crazy heat pump situation in this can also Spike even in the battery pack now I'm not sure if that's just on dual motors this is my first time really testing a model 3 lfp but I'd be really curious when you pump up the battery preconditioning do you hear the heat pump it gets loud so it's very loud extra juicing and and the other thing that's really interesting is you run this battery pack down to a very low state of charge I do I didn't I didn't lose any performance and I know you would explain this to me is because I don't think the battery I don't think the car knows what the state of charge is in the battery that's because the voltage level doesn't really change across the battery so you still have the same discharge performance yeah so remember when I rented that model y uh from Hertz yes and they told me you can't charge it less than nine percent right and I took it down that thing was like crawling up a hill and and recently I didn't see any NCM anything right but so anyway this car will will go just as fast as it at one percent state of charges it did at 90 and what's funny is the only other time I've driven a model 3 lfp was actually on the Nurburgring doing laps in lars's car and I had Robin in the car and timing was with me and Jordan and I forget who else but we had five people in that thing doing Nurburgring laps and we didn't get power limit from thermal overheat until 70 of the way through the lap it was really incredible actually right which is unusual for lfp lfp is not as energy dense as NCM and um you know so that's why it doesn't have as big of a range but um the thermal performance was amazing one thing I wanted to bring up is that when I was looking at buying this car there were only two choices in the model three there was either the model 3 Performance which was pretty expensive and then there was the model 3 rear-wheel drive with the lfp the model 3 long range non-lfp battery pack which I think they say is about 350 has about a 350 mile range as opposed to 270. you can't even buy that car today well you can in inventory so they'll they'll stock some inventory dual motor cars really you can't order it that way okay well it's my understanding I couldn't find one sure they might be hard to find given the certain time but yeah I believe you can still buy some inventory ones one of our viewers has a 2023 long range all-wheel drive uh that that we might actually do some testing on he lives in Colorado Okay um so here's the reason we're actually suggesting this I know we said a couple downsides to lfp cold climates the car drives fine in the cold you just really need to pre-condition it as soon as you know you're going to a DC fast charging station you know set this thing to a supercharger immediately for 99 of the time this is a car you charge it home to a hundred percent you actually get almost very little difference between a model 3 Performance at 90 charging every day and this at 100 that Delta I think it's about 270. I think it's probably not it's probably a little bit more but I really don't think in Daily driving you'll notice a range difference between the base and the Max and the model 3 lineup and you save 10 grand yeah so this was how much was this okay so this particular car because I didn't pay extra for the paint or for the wheels or for the interior this was 42 990 plus what is it 1200 1200 1300 for delivery yeah plus tax but if you live in New Jersey or some other states you don't have pay sales tax but this car also qualifies for a 7 500 federal tax credit as long as you do here in the states and then this car also qualified for in my state of Connecticut a 2250 what they call a cheaper rebate that's right off the hood so the dealership well Tesla took that right off the price of the car so if you look at the deal holistically this whole thing thirty seven thousand eight hundred dollars for a brand new Tesla with autopilot with 270 miles of range with access to the supercharger Network they're built really solid there was a dark period in model 3 where they weren't built very well I think my car falls into that to be totally honest mine's creaky and rattly it feels like it's never never really felt totally put together this thing feels solid I mean you have some panel misalignments that we actually hadn't seen on some other new model 3 production so it seems to be varied by car yeah which is a little I saw this I put this in in my delivery video the alignment here um was was really not good and and that's okay and it's a trunk alignment but also if you come over here you'll see a little bit of misalignment here and some other things but minor things that Tesla knows they know how to fix them this is a daily driver not a showpiece yeah it's a car that you just get you drive you do your daily chores in it and you get out and you know do whatever you this car you can pile the miles on not feel bad about it there hurts rental cars by the way if anyone's going on vacation anywhere just rent one they're 70 bucks a day yeah and um you know what they're they're totally killing it with this product you can do anything you want to the battery pack charge it however or whatever you want it does like to see full charge once a week that's their recommendation um and uh let's go for a drive in it sure what else is there to say I mean it just it comes on great tires Michelin primacies I mean that's like an OE spec Michelin pretty high quality Tire I mean for performance it's not but you know balance of longevity and ride quality and noise I mean they did a pretty good job here has a full glass canopy I mean what's crazy is this car standard comes with autopilot and a lucid air is nine thousand dollars to option Lane centering all right and that's more expensive tycon thousands of dollars to get Inno Drive yeah one thing I do want to show you is you see these wheels if you don't like these things check this out you can just go like this now I'm going to try to do this without put it in wide view in case he falls over there you go and then what you can do is get the center cap with the tee and you can get caps right here to put over and those Wheels look pretty good honestly I love the idea that I I mean I encourage you to go no options on this car you wanted to get white seats and some other things and but I really like the idea of just seeing what a zero option Tesla can be 18 inch wheels and it's incredible value for money now there is one caveat I've been saying for a long time it comes with the four frisbees might decapitate some of that yeah serious it does yeah it's got some metal spikes out of it and everything yeah the one caveat is the Chevy bolt EV if you're just doing commuting and you just want a new basic car to drive that thing at twenty six thousand dollars before the tax credit is still way cheaper than this and you get a lot of range and you get a pretty nice car you've owned a bolt I I love the bolt um however for road tripping it's it's just going to take a long time you can charge it I mean we would never recommend someone to buy a bolt to road trip I mean you can do it I've done it before it's not a problem but we'll hear 50 people in the comments saying they drove across the country and it was no problem as they waited an hour at every charging stuff one of the things that I do want to say about this car is that you know how the v3s will charge upwards of 250 kilowatts the most I've seen uh this car charge is 171 kilowatts that is its peak charging rate yeah and it will do that with a CCS adapter and it will do it I did it right and that's just you know that's the thing you can you spend what is it 250 bucks 180 bucks for a CCS 250 from the Tesla web lowered it now oh they did yeah oh wow all right or maybe that 250 was a loader I think it's less than 200 dollars I did too but get the CCS adapter and you can charge this thing anywhere you want yeah out in the public and it's just it's the ultimate uh sort of I even charged this car at a magic dock using CCS right just to see like what's going on with that and it was 170 actually charged faster with the with the magic dock than it did I mean only one kilowatt so it was basically the same the battery was a little warmer but look here they're great cars they're really reasonably priced they're solid and I love it I love driving this car you know what it is it's easy to drive if this car's in the driveway you just get in it and you go super easy totally and I want to talk about just some of those things that that we take for granted as Tesla owners because we're so used to having Spotify integration and you know me never even seeing this car until today because I have the car in my Tesla app all my settings loaded up it loaded my Spotify right away just remotely everything is so interconnected where it's like if I have a friend that's borrowing my car which happens all the time I can just text them the key to my car yeah like so many little things like that that no one else can do every automaker has a bit of pieces of what Tesla can do they have a little bit of like tycon can show you charging speed you can pre-condition cars from certain apps no one has the full technology ecosystem that Tesla has and love or hate Tesla Love Her hate Elon that is a unique and awesome feature to owning one of these cars and the barrier to entry it's like no longer the base ones aren't bad it's just like this is the one to buy and let's talk more about that as we drive and you install your center cap I got to figure out how to put this well you've got to line up line up your valve stem oh yeah look at that yeah that was smart yeah here we go I can't tell you how many model threes I see with that jammed on there we go think about the range increase you just gained back to this car beautiful touchdown half a mile let's go well you join us in the model 3 lfp o and Dad I know you've been driving this car for a little bit but it's actually my second time driving the model 3 lfp as I talked about earlier the time before was on the Nurburgring so my only experience with this car was driving it around the track and that was actually a Shanghai produced model 3 uh lfp car and this one was built in Fremont right yep so that was pretty cool to experience that car and that was just as it came out Lars had one of the first ones in Europe and we were like how do you charge this thing we were all like really curious about all of that because again 100 charging is a new thing for EVS one thing I'd really love to hear from maybe some battery chemistry experts is you know typically with NCM or the battery packs and other electric cars can charge them to 100 but you don't want to leave them there very long and he of course is an added source of degradation I'd be really curious if although Tesla says they need to charge it to a hundred percent so the BMS can calibrate if it's actually good for the car they do say in the manual quote manual but they do say It's weekly they would like you to uh charge it not every day they say you can but they recommend weekly charging so that the battery management system can figure out something like that just took nowhere just to know where it's at but where's the daily limit that's what I would like to know if I want to absolutely do the best possible job of taking care of my battery pack should I charge it to 50 and leave it for a long time that's probably what I would do either way but I'd be really curious to know if that actually helps the longevity yeah I think we need a battery expert for that so that's why we are asking the YouTube commenters yeah yeah because we do have battery camera you can go straight down here by Cheney okay so um go straight great uh so okay driving the car first of all model three all the good stuff applies here great seating position awesome little steering Wheel cars really fun actually to hustle around the suspension systems they've put on the newer ones have really gotten I would say a little bit softer and less performance oriented I like that yeah sure but I was driving Dominic Joni's uh Drive electric with Dominic I was just driving his long range rear-wheel drive model 3 which he purchased used it was an early one it actually had the original stiff suspension on it okay and that car hammered through some Corners it was awesome really this I can tell like when you really load it up it kind of floats a little bit it's also got the 18 inch wheels bigger sidewalls right yeah the sidewall's not playing too much of a role here it's definitely under tired I mean like if you're gonna go model 3 track build you would get uh you know Mountain Pass Performance Suspension or kwv3s and then just some 10 10 and a half inch wide wheels and that's all you need to do right it's pretty amazing how what's amazing is how like to me you just you just gave it the beans there and it goes pretty good it okay I mean it's okay it's a real differing opinions to me it actually feels really slow but like look at it coming through okay so wait wait Kyle Kyle seriously you can have so much fun not that fast oh okay does anyone want to buy a slightly used model 3. um okay so this is this is interesting the car is very slow I agree with it yeah I mean it's fine it gets out of its own way for rear-wheel drive would you say it's underpowered for the average person I would say like forget about performance driving I'm talking if you've got you've got 38 000 to spend after all the taxes assuming you can get the 7 500 I mean would you you know would you use are going to get a performance car for that no no it's not like it's slow no no it's not slow the one thing I wish Tesla would do a little bit better job of actually is just giving you full power from zero so for example especially here at let's just say five miles an hour I floor it nothing really happens you have to build speed and then it ramps on the power and they do this for all of their non-performance models where they Nerf the acceleration at low speed to give it an artificially lower zero to sixty so you buy the performance but at speed this thing actually goes pretty good once you're at 50 60 miles an hour the performance is strong all right you heard everything Kyle said for the average consumer especially if you're buying an EV for the first time go drive this car you will not if you say this is underpowered you then go ahead and get the performance one but to me this thing is is fun it's quick around it's very light in this in the front end yeah because you don't have the annular Corner the extra power or the extra weight yep um of the front motor so you know I I think it's really a great great value I really do I'm super happy I got this car and I came out of a Model S right which you know was a beautiful car but this thing's more fun so one thing I noticed is living in Colorado the cold weather state is I'm seeing a ton of model 3 performances right now new ones on temp tags and the reason is that's the only all-wheel drive version you can order from the factory that's true my recommendation is unless you live in the mountains of Colorado or you know maybe in Alaska um Montana sure but unless you really live up there this car rear-wheel drive get a set of gnocchi and snow tires on it you know some r5s or maybe even the 10 EV studded versions you're going to be pretty much Unstoppable in the snow the balance of the car is great having that weight on the rear axle with the rear motor really helps push you along it's the 911 effect and you know I've had model 3 rear-wheel drive in Canada in the middle of winter your original long range rear wheel drive I took up to Montreal and did a whole bunch of stuff around Quebec and yeah that was actually fun back then because I was showing that was one of the first model threes ever in Canada well Kyle remember when Mom and I went on in search of the magic docs to Upstate New York just a few weeks ago just a few weeks ago and when we got to Albany we it started to snow and by the time we hit Utica on 87 the New York State Thruway I was in a downright blizzard in this car for over an hour and it felt great now these are not even snow tires these are all season tires not even all weather tires right do you not have fog lights on this car no fog lights what the other thing they took away were our sensors so when you back up we're going close the 2023 model 3s they killed the sensors Tesla's taking things away from cars there's no sensors complete Vision based as you know no more no more radar but I heard now 11.3 software which might be waiting to download the sensors are coming back but I want to try that out actually there's no sensors okay so we're going to aim for this mailbox you'll hit it it's not going to stop me no it's not even gonna no there's no sensors wow we're like right up on that thing 105 Creek Road's gonna have to get a new mailbox all right that dude's ripping in the RS4 nice one of my favorite all-time cars actually manual V8 4.2 liter revs to like 7000 RPM and guess what we're about to go do uh chase down that Civic which is going to hold us up I was gonna say let's go chase down the RS4 and the model 3. one thing you have to do whatever you want to drive quickly is enable slip start um yeah I do that all the time so let's finish wrapping up the video more or less thank you model three is a from a performance standpoint probably the most fun electric car for the money you can buy no question and uh you know before you get into taikon territory or maybe ev6 ionic 5 you know n or gt versions this thing at 37 000 after tax credit or whatever let's just say 42 Grand before all of that um I I don't think you can find a better put together truly the build quality has improved so much from the early cars unlike Model S and X model 3 and Y have gotten better um you know you get unbelievable charging you charge at home to 100 you charge it a supercharger whatever you need to uh you know you get wonderful driving characteristics the best one pedal tuning a quiet car with great driver assistance that you can activate anyway heated seats heated steering wheel glass roof I mean backup camera which is Beautiful Everything is it's unbelievable the amount of features you get yeah the Spotify integration the app integration is truly the best out there you can load up you and all your friends Tesla's in your app and just you know choose what car you're at phone key it's it is the easiest car to live with on a daily basis and so many of those little things they just do a great job that that no one else can even come close to matching at the moment so um big positives here and this the reason we are suggesting the model 3 lfp as the one to buy is because the 10 000 more you're going to spend for a performance you're gonna get bigger Wheels which some people are into them The Styling wise but for 99 of people the arrows are the most efficient uh you're getting you know of course a less efficient car chemistry that will degrade more than this we're told at least we believe and it's not bad the the degradation conversations really played out on EVS my car has my model 3 is 130 000 miles on it with you know 10 11 12 degradation somewhere in there it's not bad but it's noticeable and I don't think we'll see that with these cars I think we'll see less you know this I was just in California this past week yeah I left the car at I believe 73 percent came back seven days later it was still at 73 pretty amazing there was not not one percentage difference when I met when I rented the pole star and I was sitting in the car at Hertz the other day it went from 80 to 79 while I was sitting in it yeah it's like what's going on while you're running oh I know I know I had I had something on there probably but you know look Workhorse car great car check it out make sure you drive these cars it has to be on your shopping list yeah it is so good that you know I guess some of the comments we that are really popping up recently is I wouldn't drive a Tesla because of Elon and look I'm not here to convince you to drive a Tesla buy whatever you want I mean I I think the ionic six is going to be one hell of a cool car I'm really looking forward to playing around with that and trying that car out by what car makes you happy however if you just want to look at numbers on paper Driving Experience and overall daily livability truly and objectively there is no better one car solution than what this vehicle offers yeah including price I would say model y but that's so much more money 10 grand that's a lot of money 10 grand more so what I would rather have a model y non-performance than a model 3 Performance I think for me personally for most people out there I totally agree with so if you're going to spend 10 grand more or you're willing to before you go out and buy the model 3 Performance just drive the model y everything is 10 bigger um it's it's a little bit higher pot you know a higher seating a little easier to get in and out of uh this is a little bit low but you know me being six five I got tons of room Headroom in this car it's not difficult to get RS4 oh yeah you found them yeah no he said he said look at that look at that model 3 lfp back there I wonder how who's driving that thing I gotta find out the license plates o o s Dave wow what are the odds so he's probably like who's us who's Dave yes who's Dave well thanks for watching another out of spec reviews video thanks for joining us here in the model 3. it's not a perfect car but when you factor in the price at 42 grand for the range the charging the driving the quality everything else the service experience is Bar None it's amazing they've totally you know fixed all of their services under nightmares in my experience and yours it's just it's the car it's the Benchmark and it should be everyone's Automotive reset at least when I review cars it's mine if it can't match this then you know there's got to be something else really good about it yeah that I'm glad you finally got a chance to drive my lfp I think I'm gonna borrow it for a few months maybe over the summer or something like that and do some tests and comparisons sure just let me have the rivian that's all sure but we'll have this out in Colorado for a bit and then I'll bring it back absolutely you can what's mine is yours thank you thank you is what yours yours mine absolutely all right there you go all right see you all in another one take care enjoy bye-bye
