[Music] the Atomos ninja 5 is a 5-inch external recorder and monitor capable of recording 4k at up to 60 frames per second in the small and well-designed box you'll find the usual paperwork as well as a lovely welcome message from atomos underneath that is the ninja 5 itself the power supply dummy battery and multiple power plugs are included in the box below all of that is the SSD caddy the aluminum and polycarbonate body of the ninja 5 is extremely light weighing in at around 12 and a half ounces about the same as this soup can on the chassis you'll find the HDMI IN port where all information and recording takes place and the HDMI out making pass-through to video village or a larger monitor possible on the other side you'll find the headphone jack line in and microphone in and an area to connect a remote controller and of course the power button the bottom and top of the body both have 1/4 20 threaded mount and at the top is the fan exhaust port the fan is quiet and has never been an issue for sound when shooting although I never use a mic mounted anywhere near the camera and at the back is the battery mount the Atomos ninja 5 thankfully uses an NP F style battery they're cheap and easy to come by I get a little over two hours of constant use for mine the master caddy holding a solid state drive slides into the back here which is where you'll be recording all of your footage the Ninja five is an extremely bright and crisp 5.2 inch HDR 10 bit 1080p display it's maximum brightness is 1000 nits an it being equivalent to the brightness output of one candle so it's bright enough to shoot in broad daylight and still get a good read on your camera settings it's an extremely easy to navigate and intuitive display if you want to change a setting simply click on that area on the screen it will immediately take you to the submenu where you can navigate to other areas to remove all text and graphics from the screen and get a good look at your framing simply touch the screen anywhere the ninja 5 carries with it all the necessary features to enable a cinematographer to fully succeed on set waveform vector scopes and zebras are available and the focus peaking display gives the user color and intensity options safe areas and cinema guides help with framing and the zoom option is indispensable when nailing focus it should be noted that a common issue at the Ninja 5 is trouble syncing audio when using the mic in I have it set to a 3 frame delay to ensure the sound is perfectly in sync your results may vary playing back video is wonderful on this beautiful screen it almost makes me want to watch netflix on it the Ninja five supports up to eight Lutz that can be uploaded from the SSD these lots can either be used as reference for white balance and exposure to be later laid in and post or it can be burned directly into your footage on the fly I prefer to shoot everything in s log too and use the LUT for reference just in case I need to make any broad changes in post but if you need a quicker workflow or to turn over client work quickly this is a great way to eliminate one step down the road provided you nail exposure and white balance on the day which I rarely seem to do hence the need for as much latitude as possible this could be a two hour tutorial if we went over all the features of the ninja 5 so I just want to emphasize its importance in my own workflow as a Sony shooter let me show you some of the more important features if that also applies to you [Music] currently as a user of the Sony a7 t3 and as a filmmaker who now finds himself in predominantly documentary style shoots the 30 minute recording limit of the a7 3 doesn't suit my workflow terribly well enter the add most ninja 5 as an external recorder I'm able to get two and a half hours of continuous footage on a 500 gigabyte SSD recording at Pro res 4 - - and using Pro res lt you can achieve over three hours of recording time this makes the length of sit-down interview shoots only a matter of battery life if mains power isn't available this is the number one reason why I purchased the ninja 5 if you shoes Sony than the benefit to introducing the ninja 5 into your workflow is the ability to record in ProRes now I'm a PC user but Adobe Premiere supports Pro res and it's a lifesaver the a7 threes internal codec is a little harder on my editing system but pro res is a dream to work with even at full resolution playback color grading pro res footage is noticeably easier and I feel I can push the colors just a wee bit harder this was the second reason I purchased the Atomos ninja 5 [Music] that said the Sony a7 3 only records 8-bit four to zero internally and a ninja five will only record what the camera is sending it so the final image quality of my videos isn't greatly affected by the use of the ninja 5 but as I mentioned the dynamic range and ability to push the colors and post just a little further seem to be a benefit to using this as a recorder should the next Sony camera have 4k 60p or raw capabilities then that will certainly change the conversation you'll find links to Gerald and Duns videos on the subject in this video's description his understanding is much more thorough than mine and they have been extremely helpful [Music] the newest Sony cameras have active face detect and eye autofocus in video mode but the ninja 5 actually makes face detected during video possible externally since you'll be recording in the atomos and not with the camera face detect remains active due to the fact that the camera isn't recording this came in extremely handy on my last shoot when following an interview subject around comes in handy with kids too the one downside to the ninja 5 is that it doesn't shoot 120 frames per second if you're like many other Sony shooters and you use the 120 frames per second option frequently then the ninja 5 isn't really for you that said if you don't have a monitor that you love yet then it may well be for you at around $700 you can have the monitor a couple of batteries and a 500 gigabyte SSD and that's really only $200 more than a decent small HD monitor plus you're able to use it as a recorder for non slow-motion shoots and potentially as a recorder for the next iteration of sony camera the third reason I purchased the ninja 5 is that it's a fairly future-proofed piece of technology especially with its capability of recording raw from enabled cameras one can only hope for that level of capability from our next sony camera [Music] for lighter rigging and setups the ninja 5 sits easily on a ball mount and makes for the perfect way to simultaneously record and monitor interviews in a cinema rig whether mobile or mounted the ninja 5 is perfect for pulling focus and running handheld it also makes for a perfect way to record and see yourself when making vlogs or YouTube videos if you're a Sony shooter and you're looking to get around the recording limit of your mirrorless camera want to introduce pro res into your workflow and want one of the best pound-for-pound monitors around then the atomos ninja 5 is a great buy it does stand a question though why did I buy this recorder to extend recording time when I could easily just switch to something like black magic and get arguably better or more likely similar results two reasons one I do shoot stills as a part of my artistic endeavors and as a part of my creative business so mirrorless is still the best bet for me as a hybrid shooter and two I absolutely love the Sony lineup of lenses and in particular the G master lenses and I've invested greatly into the ecosystem it's a matter of economics as much as art so if you're like me and you have a similar lineup of gear then the atom most ninja 5 is a perfect addition to your kit that's why I have two of them [Music] [Music] you
