The Art of Screen Printing

you [Music] so [Music] i've been making posters for just over a year now i hand draw everything scan it in and use photoshop to edit the rest into a gig poster or album artwork depending on the commission it's mostly a digital process [Music] i've always wanted to print every poster i make but i just don't have the facilities [Music] i was asked by the rough trade gang in east london to create a poster for the legendary proper planet who's doing a q a session in store so we thought it'd be ace to make a special limited edition poster for this event [Music] after spending many weeks bouncing around with ideas something finally dripped down my brain [Music] but i didn't want to just scan this in and leave it there wanted to make this a physical copy like a record something you can hold something to touch my old man andy wilmsley has never been for quite some time over 20 years now working in the creative scene he's been planning to make a short film about the screen printing studio for a while it made perfect sense for us to use my piece as an example of ben's printing talent and his incredible studio space [Music] [Music] this poster required eight colors all hand mixed or precisely sectioned up into their correct layers a photoshop job that took a bit of laboring over ben dodge's studio is based in the quaint town of kendall just on the outskirts of lake district an old mill layout for artists and creatives to mingle a space to experiment and produce wonderfully crafted work his studio oozes experience and passion ben's love for music and art combined together to create a studio atmosphere that wraps around you and tickles you with inspiration [Music] i arrived casually late bed had already printed the first six colors here it was a joy to see how much focus went into printing paint onto paper using the squeegee to effortlessly spread the rich colours over the screen to the paper below sound man joe graham reclined in the sound of that noise there's something special about working in a studio being surrounded by past works and pieces you've collected sticking your favorite record on and getting stuck into whatever it is you're making you're lost in time and nothing else matters all your focus and energy flows directly into the it feels like you're dancing around the room using all the facilities available using both hands flipping from side to side as you weave your way around the studio to access the tools you require ben dutch opened my brain to the prospects experience can bring how knowledge allows you to create something you once thought was impossible to collaborate and create a new friendship with a fellow artist so your piece of work becomes a communal [Music] laughter the end result of this poster is just remarkable ben's talent is really showing through the printing in his artwork it's a craft that is so enjoyable to do and the result excused the artwork into a new life [Music] stuff mr dodge's screen printing studio is certainly a place to hang out [Music] don't [Music] you
