hi Hiram here last week I did a flame test on this acosta copper coil alcohol stove this is one that I bought on eBay it was just a flame test I tried burning it without the wind screen that it comes with it's a combination windscreen potsdam I tried it outside I filled the thing up with methanol and tried a flame test like I said but it only burned for about eight minutes before it went out at first I thought that maybe it was just consumed all the alcohol but when it cooled off and I opened it up the thing still had six ounces over six ounces of methanol in the tube with that I thought maybe something's wrong so I took the coil part off checked it that all seems to be there's a and int there's a wick on the inside of this that seemed to be okay so thinking about it I think I screwed up the test where I tried burning it without the windscreen or a pot on it I think maybe it needs the thermal feedback from all of this stuff let me like this get it going I think that just being yeah that just being out in the open all of the heat was escaping and it just didn't keep it hot enough for the coils to work the coil to work so I'm going to do a little boil test kind of a modified boil test the thing that with this the windscreen that it comes with is about seven inches across and about six inches tall I don't really have a pot that I can put on this I mean it's for a really big rig I guess not exactly camping gear it's kind of like for I guess for emergency types up so with that I could either make a smaller windscreen pot stand out of something like a can I could easily do that that way my regular Boy Scout pot that I used for tests would fit on here but I thought for today what I would do is there are these cutouts here I'm just going to use some heavy wire run it across like that and then I have a pot that's six and a quarter inches in diameter and about three and a quarter inches tall I'm going to use that for the test I have four cups of water in it setting at about 76 degrees I'm not going to try it at the 60 degrees that I usually do okay there the flames are going let's put on the pots ten combination Potsdam pot holder here's the four cups of water sits right on there leaves space in between start that so four cups of water starting at there was 76 degrees real temperature is seventy nine point five it's raining outside so first we'll see if the water comes to a boil and when and see if how long if it lasts longer than the eight minutes I got my fingers crossed so let's see what happens okay we're a little more than two minutes into the test the temperature is up to 97 98 99 degrees I don't know if you can hear it on this camera but it's not real loud but loud and that's about the best view I can get of the flame so let's see what happens from here one thing I forgot to mention is that the primer cup I don't know if you'd be able to see it here there we go the primer cup itself is still burning be interesting to see what happens this time when that goes out but we'll see now eight minutes into the test temperatures up to 177 degrees this is wanted it gone out the other day hopefully you can see that the primer cup has gone out you can hear me it's quite loud the Lisa seemed bigger so I guess maybe the problem might have been the verbal feedback all this heat was escaping you're not heating up the stove and now we have it eating it up so let's see how long it takes for this water to get to a boil and then see it open keep on going there we have 212 it was about 12 58 or so I think because I don't have a lid on this pot that's goofing it up so let's just see how long this runs throat you know how long this runs on what alcohol I put in here I think I filled it up I didn't really measure it because this is kind of a just a rough test okay so that's been burning now for 16 minutes about 3 more minutes this is a rough test because I didn't measure any alcohol but what I want to try now is see what happens if I take the pot and the wind sheep the windscreen off see if it does make the flame go out which is what I thought might have been my problem in the first time pull this off you can see that's a much better flame than what it was last week but I really thought it would be bigger with this size foil I think you can see that the primer pot underneath where you put your alcohol to start this is definitely out so I'm going to let this go and let's see how long it takes that maybe this shuts off because all these heats getting away okay we're about eighteen thirty this has been dying down it's not hardly making any noise anymore still trying to keep in there the rest of the stove all of this is definitely warm so it is acting as a huge heatsink without that windscreen and the pot to keep the temperature in it's just soaking out everywhere I'll open it up to this cools off and everything I'll open it up and see if there's alcohol left in this and I'll put it on the screen but there is or is not but it looks like it's about ready to go out on its own let me just see but I can't tell if there's anything in there this is going to be an alcohol hog I mean it's going to eat it up like it's going out of style but this should hold a fair amount of alcohol in there I was thinking if you wanted to use this like in a big situation where you're doing large pots of water or whatever you could make this a remote yeah it's trying to die here I think another minute or so and it'll kick the bucket the important thing will be to see if there's is alcohol left over and I'm just kind of rambling here right now let me cut here and I'll come back when it dies okay here we are on thirty minutes this has been surprising because it would die down like it it is now the flames would get lower heat up the tubes and then it would take off again up and down up and down this is really surprising now the one thing that I don't have inside here that I had outside is a breeze to push the heat away so that may be what's keeping this going but it would really it would die so you know they're starting to spurt up again it would die down to where I thought it was going to quit the heat would get down in the coil because the flames would be less and then it would take off again but I think now it is on its last legs okay so interesting little stove ought to see if there's alcohol left in this when it does go out but that was water came to a boil that was four cups of water starting at about 76 degrees room temperature was 80 I think came to a boil at about 12 minutes 58 seconds and then it's still burning here at 31 interesting little thing so I thank you for watching I'm sorry I goofed up the the first test where I didn't have the wind she windscreen on it excuse me but I thank you for watching I look forward to your input questions remarks helpful suggestions and as always watch for my buddy max bye now
