[Music] what's up guys every NFL team has its own unique history some of it is bright and some of it is dark with regards to the ladder these teams have all made some awful mistakes that their fans wish they could have back whether it was a bad draft pick a miserable trade or a brutal hire every NFL club set itself back at some point with one awful transaction let's get into the absolute worst decision in the history of every NFL franchise Arizona Cardinals drafting Matt Leinart the USC product won the 2004 Heisman Trophy as well as many other awards during his time in college the QB desperate Arizona Cardinals drafted Leinart with the number 10 pick in 2006 but he didn't come close to replicating his college success at the NFL level he suffered numerous injuries during his time with Arizona and fortunately for them Kurt wanna revive his career and led this team to a Super Bowl 43 appearance the Warner retired after the 2009 season and it left the Cardinals scrambling for a QB over the next 10 years Arizona could have drafted a perennial Pro Bowl talent over Leinart michael o de nada Chad Greenway Tampa Holly bore Antonio Cromartie one of those guys could have made a huge difference in their Superbowl quest Atlanta Falcons trading Brett Favre the Falcons drafted Favre with the 33rd pick in 1991 they only had four passing attempts in his rookie season Atlanta quickly decided that Farva wasn't for them and they traded him to the Green Bay Packers for their 1992 first-round pick Favre would go on to win three MVP awards in Green Bay and he led them to consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the 1996 and 97 seasons winning it all in the former year Baltimore Ravens rebuilding after Super Bowl xlvii championship the Ravens won Super Bowl xlvii Ray Lewis swansong year and rather than keep the band together for another run GM Ozzie Newsome decided to rebuild the Ravens didn't retain Pro Bowl safety at read who signed with the Houston Texans they traded top receiver Anquan Boldin to the San Francisco 49ers for peanuts and they chose not to re-sign cornerback Corey Graham or stud linebackers Paul Kruger and Danelle Irby all three left and free-agency the Ravenswood misty playoffs in 2013 and in four of the next five seasons altogether what up Newsome kept the bulk of their team together after the title maybe they could have won another Buffalo Bills drafting Tom Casas no number one overall the Buffalo Bills earned the first overall selection in 1979 from the San Francisco 49ers as part of the OJ Simpson trade buffalo used the pick on Ohio State linebacker Tom Cosmo but instead he went to the CFL for the sake of earning more money he was a star in the CFL and eventually came back to the NFL making stops in San Francisco and Cleveland Buffalo never got a single game out of him and they passed on the likes of Phil Simms Otis Anderson Kellen Winslow and dan Hampton Carolina Panthers cutting Steve Smith senior Smith is arguably the greatest Carolina Panther of all time here in five Pro Bowl selections and led Carolina to a Super Bowl 38 appearance as well as the 2005 NFC Championship Game despite helping Carolina win the NFC South in 2013 Smith was released by the Panthers after the season and he signed with the Baltimore Ravens Smith showed he still had it by recording another 1,000 yards season in 2014 and he performed well again in 2016 the Panthers offense struggled without Smith in 2014 a year later Cam Newton won MVP honors and guided Carolina to 15 wins plus a Super Bowl 50 appearance but they lost the Denver Broncos what if Newton had Smith for that game maybe he could have been the difference no clue why they released a player who was still extremely effective but anyway whatever Chicago Bears trading Bobby Lane the Hall of Fame quarterback joined the Chicago Bears in 1948 but the Bears never gave Lane much of a chance which led to his trade request after just one year in Chicago he was traded to the New York Bulldogs will also gave up on Lane after one year Lane finally found his home with Detroit and led the lines to the NFL championship in 1952 53 at 57 he was the six-time Pro Bowler and was named to the 1950s all-decade team Cincinnati Bengals drafting Kijana Carter 1st overall the Bengals took Penn State running back Kijana Carter with the first overall pick in 1995 he was the Heisman Trophy runner up and looked primed for a special career in the NFL but unfortunately injuries completely derailed his career Carter missed his entire rookie year due to a knee injury and he only suited up for a total of four games over the 1998 and 1999 seasons Carter lasted just four seasons with the bangles and totaled 747 yards and 16 touchdowns not enough production for a first overall pick that's for sure Cleveland Browns drafting Tim Couch first overall no team has made more mistakes than the Browns in the Superbowl era but taking Tim Couch first overall in 1999 was the king of Cleveland Sports miscues couch lasted just five years in the NFL and compiled 22 wins against 37 losses and he had 64 touchdowns against 67 interceptions so yeah the Browns obviously didn't get what they bargained for certainly a waste of a first overall selection Dallas Cowboys firing Jimmie Johnson Gary Jones bought the Cowboys in 1989 and made the gutsy decision to fire the legendary Tomlin replacing him with Jimmie Johnson it turned out to be a true franchise changing move and Johnson rebuilt the Cowboys into a dynasty leading them to a pair of Super Bowl championships in the 90s but Jones wasn't happy when Johnson has to have more say about player personnel and their working relationship was fractured beyond repair Jones refused to listen to his Super Bowl winning coach and he drove Johnson straight out of town Jones hired Barry Switzer to take over as head coach the Cowboys would win a third Super Bowl in the 1995 season though it was mainly Johnson's players that shaped this championship team Denver Broncos hiring Josh McDaniels Mike Shanahan was head coach of the Broncos from 1995 to 2008 he led the team to Superbowl 32 and 33 championship and recorded a point six one six of winning percentage but following a woeful collapse in 2008 the Broncos fired chata Han and hired Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to take over the Broncos started out six NO under McDaniels in 2009 only to drop eight of their final 10 games including their final four contests missing the playoffs entirely McDaniels was fired during the 2010 season following a miserable 3 and 9 start firing Shanahan and hiring McDaniels led to quite the coaching carousel in Denver John Fox would take over for McDaniels and stay there for four years then Gary Kubiak came aboard for two years before health issues forced him to retire then man Joseph took over for two years before getting fired then big Fangio was hired in 2019 Detroit Lions hiring Matt Millen as GM the Lions hired Matt Millen as their GM in 2000 want even though he admitted too late owner William Ford that he wasn't qualified well melon turned out to be quite right he made numerous draffa stings including taking Joey Harrington third overall in 2002 as well as Charles Rodgers second overall in 2003 and Mike Williams 10th overall in 2005 the Lions never made the playoffs in the middle and era and they managed to go 116 in the 2008 season the lines record under milind tenure which spans from 2001 208 31 and 97 the real question is how he lasted so long Green Bay Packers drafting Tony Mandarin the Green Bay Packers drafted Mandarin with the number two pick in 1989 he was hyped up as the greatest offensive lineman ever amanda rich had a major attitude problem and put himself before the team he also didn't sign his rookie contract until days before the start of the regular season the packers gave up on Mandarin and released him after three seasons the Packers by the way passed on Barry Sanders Derrick Thomas and Deion Sanders who were taken with three picks right after Mandarin ouch Houston Texans drafting David Carr 1st overall the Texans joined the NFL as an expansion franchise in 2002 and they were granted the first overall pick that same year Houston used the selection of Fresno State quarterback David Carr but it wasn't able to live up to the expectations car could only absorb so much of the blame as he was sacked 76 times in his rookie year a record that stands today car posted a 22 and 53 record in his five years with the Texans and had just 59 touchdowns against 65 interceptions the Texans moved on from car in 2007 and he spent the remainder of his career as a backup Indianapolis Colts trading John Elway the Baltimore Colts drafted John Elway with the first pick in 1983 but he refused to play for the organization and forced them to make a trade the Colts gave in and sent out way to the Denver Broncos in exchange for offensive lineman Chris Hinton as well as QB Marc Herman and a 1984 first-round pick which was used on Ron salt Hinton was a standout and a Pro Bowler for the Colts but he and the other two couldn't bring the same impact that Elway brought to Denver the latter guided the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances and they won back-to-back titles in the 1990s ninety-eight seasons the Colts were a mess for a decade following the relocation to Indy and the franchise wasn't saved until Peyton Manning was drafted first overall in 1998 Jacksonville Jaguars drafting Blaine Gabbert / JJ Watt the Jaguars were desperate for our quarterback so they traded up with Washington to snag Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert with the number 10 pick in 2011 gabber lasted just three seasons in Jacksonville and won just 5 of 27 starts while tossing 22 touchdowns against 24 interceptions who went right after Gabbard at 11th overall some guy named JJ Watt never hear of him Kansas City Chiefs drafting Todd Blackledge the 83rd draft class maybe the best ever for quarterbacks the Broncos took out way first overall and two more future hall-of-famers followed Todd Blackledge whom the chief took 7th overall was not one of them by taking him the Chiefs passed on Jim Kelly and Dan Marino to Hall of Famers who also played in Super Bowls Blackwood spent five seasons in Kansas City but only suited up for 40 games and he had a total of 26 touchdowns against 32 interceptions with the Chiefs obviously not as good as Marino and Kelly Los Angeles chargers drafting Ryan Leaf the Chargers moved up via trade with the Arizona Cardinals to take leaf with the number-two pick in 1998 right behind Peyton Manning like the sheriff leaf was considered a can't-miss prospect who would change the landscape of the NFL but injuries and a major attitude problem including a hot temper and pure selfishness led to a disappointing career for leaf he lasted just two seasons in San Diego winning just four of 18 starts while tossing 13 touchdowns against 33 interceptions he was out of the NFL after the 2001 season Los Angeles Rams replacing Jerome Bettis with Lawrence Phillips the Rams had a young and dynamic running back in Jerome Bettis who had a pair of 1,000 yard seasons on his resume but the Rams were set on Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips ahead of the 1996 draft so they said Bettis of the Pittsburgh Steelers Phillips had plenty of well-documented problems off the field and he was a disaster to deal with on the field the Rams caught him after two seasons while Bettis embarked on a Hall of Fame career in Pittsburgh that saw him win Super Bowl xlix dolphins taking daunte culpepper / Drew Brees the San Diego Chargers chose to move on from Brees after the 2005 season and moved forward with Philip Rivers Brie's entered free agency and began negotiating with the Miami Dolphins however Miami was scared away because of his shoulder injury and Brees would sign with the New Orleans Saints Miami then traded for Minnesota Vikings QB Dante Culpepper surrendering a second-round pick in return Culpepper made for just four starts in Miami and was gone after the 2006 season Brees won Super Bowl 44 with the Saints and became the NFL's all-time passing yards leader you think the Dolphins would take a do-over here Minnesota Vikings the Herschel Walker trade the Vikings were high on Dallas Cowboys Provo running back Herschel Walker and they decided to sacrifice the world to get him many cent Dallas five players and a bundle of draft picks including three first and three seconds this started out the Cowboys dynasty of the 90s Dallas used their pick on cornerstone players like Emmitt Smith Russell Maryland and Darren Woodson the Walker trade produced three Super Bowls in Dallas and the Vikings would simply regret this trade Walker wasn't horrible by any means but he didn't exactly start up a dynasty in Minnesota New England Patriots missing out on Jerry Rice 49ers head coach Bill Walsh won and Jerry Rice but the Dallas Cowboys also reportedly had their eyes on him Dallas Vicks 17th so while swung a deal with the Patriots to move up and snag the 16th spot so he could get rice who only went on to become the greatest wide receiver of all time the Pats use two picks they obtained from San Fran on Trevor mattock and Ben Thomas neither of whom became stars rights became the final piece San Fran needed the former dynasty leading them to three Super Bowls New Orleans Saints Ricky Williams trade ahead of the 1999 draft Saints head coach Mike Ditka had his eyes on Texas running back Ricky Williams the Saints gave up their 1999 draft pick plus their 2000 first and third-round picks to the Washington Redskins receiving the number five pick in return so they could draft Williams with the strong haul from the Saints the Redskins drafted future hall-of-fame cornerback Champ Bailey and standout offensive tackle John Jensen now Williams was productive in his three years with the Saints but the franchise was still a mess with him Ditka was fired during the 1999 season and Williams was sent to the Miami Dolphins in 2002 it's never smart to trade your entire draft for one player especially one that only spends three years with the organ near Giants drafting Cedric Jones the Giants elected Oklahoma defensive end Cedric Jones with the number five pick in 1996 passing on a handful of future superstars and Hall of Famers Jones spent five seasons in the NFL but only totaled fifteen sacks over that timeframe New York passed on all-time greats like Jonathan Ogden Marvin Harrison Brian Dawkins Terrell Owens and Ray Lewis whose Ravens crushed the Giants in Super Bowl 35 Terry Glenn and Eddie George were among the other future standouts that the Giants could have taken over Jones New York Jets letting Bill Belichick get away Bill Parcells resigned from the Jets after the 1999 campaign and set up a plan for longtime friend Bill Belichick to take over for him the Jets hired Belichick all right buddy held a press conference and announced his resignation one day later Belichick was then hired to take over as head coach of the Patriots in 2000 and owner Robert Kraft gave him player personnel control as well the Jets got a first-round pick in exchange for surrendering Belichick but uh the guy won six Super Bowls in Foxborough one of the Jets done in the last twenty years Oakland Raiders drafting JaMarcus Russell first overall the Raiders took Russell first overall in 2007 but he simply couldn't perform at the NFL level Russell only appeared in 25 games over a three-year span he posted a record of 7 and 18 and had just 18 touchdowns against 23 interceptions [Music] the Raiders moved on from Russell after the 2009 campaign and has come back to temps in 2013 and 16 were all for nothing Oakland by the way passed on perennial Pro Bowlers and future Hall of Famers like Calvin Johnson Joe Thomas Darrelle Revis Adrian Peterson Patrick Willis and Marshawn Lynch big yikes Philadelphia Eagles 2011 offseason spending spree Michael Vick revived his career and led the Eagles to an NFC East Division title in 2010 so the front office decided to build around him and go all in during the 2011 offseason they signed to lead cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a five-year 60 million dollar deal veteran pass rusher : jenkins earned a five-year twenty five million dollar contract Pro Bowl pass ROG Jason babban received a similar five-year deal worth twenty eight million dollars filly also added Vince Young to backup Vick young infamously proclaimed the Eagles as the dream team well the dream team finished with a mere eight and eight record that may not seem horrible mother had to win their final four games just to salvage a 500 season Pittsburgh Steelers cutting Johnny Unitas the future Hall of Fame quarterback was a stud at Louisville and the Pittsburgh Steeler selected him in the ninth round in the 1955 draft united student last long in the Steel City as he was released shortly after being drafted the Baltimore Colts on Unitas in 1956 Unitas was the best quarterback of his era leaving the Colts to three NFL championships and one Super Bowl title Unitas was a 10 time Pro Bowler n13 MVP awards completely revolutionising the quarterback position San Francisco 49ers trading Charles Haley to Dallas Haley was a stud pass rusher for the 49ers and helped them win two Super Bowls but head coach George Seifert and the players grew tired of Haley's attitude and sent him to the Dallas Cowboys in 1992 receiving second and third round selections in return well Haley turned out to be the final piece of the Cowboys championship puzzle he won three Super Bowls in Dallas and Haley's Cowboys took down the 49ers in 1992 and 93 NFC championship games what if Haley stayed with San Fran for the entire time maybe they would have added more championships to their dynasty while thwarting the Cowboys Seattle Seahawks throwing the ball from the one-yard line the Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl xlviii over the Denver Broncos and they looked poised to become a dynasty with a powerful rushing game and dominant legion of boom defense Seattle met New England in Super Bowl xlix facing a 2nd and goal situation from inside the one with the game on the line the Seahawks just had to feed the ball to Marshawn Lynch but they didn't instead Pete Carroll told Russell Wilson to throw a slant and it was picked off at the goal line by Malcom Butler and you know the rest the Patriots continued their dynasty the Seahawks core would break up over time and they never became the dynasty that many had expected things would have been oh so different if they had just fed the ball to Lynch Tampa Bay Buccaneers trading Steve Young the Bucs drafted young with the first election in the 1984 supplemental draft but they never gave him a chance young lost 16 of 19 starts over his two seasons in Tampa Bay and they wound up sending him to the 49ers for a second and fourth round picks temple would draft Vinny Testaverde with the first overall pick in 1987 but he didn't live up to expectations as for young he wound up becoming Joe Montana successor and kept the dynasty going in San Fran leaving the team to a Super Bowl 29 championship young one to MVP awards and is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Tennessee Titans trading Steve Largent this move took place when the Titans franchise was based in Houston the Oilers selected the Tulsa wideout in the fourth round in the 1976 Draft but they didn't like how he performed in the preseason he was traded to the Seahawks for nothing more than a 1977 eighth round draft choice he embarked on a Hall of Fame career that saw him earned seven Pro Bowl selections he led the league in receiving yards twice he finished his career with 819 receptions for thirteen thousand 89 yards and hundred touchdowns Washington Redskins signing Albert Haynesworth after earning consecutive Pro Bowl and first-team all-pro selections defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth left Tennessee to sign a seven-year 100 million dollar contract with Washington well the Hainsworth experiment in DC was a mess from the get-go he was at a shape failed tests clashed with coaches and openly criticized washington's defensive schemes he was suspended by the team in 2010 and traded to the New England Patriots in 2011 but even Bill Belichick couldn't save his career the Pats released Hainsworth midseason after he confronted a coach on the sidelines what do you think the worst decision in the history of your favorite team join me
