[Music] hello guys welcome back to our Channel today we'll be doing a video on oldest submarines ever built in history beginning in ancient times mankind sought to operate under the water from simple submersible to nuclear-powered underwater behemoths humans have searched for means to remain safely underwater to gain the advantage in warfare resulting in the development of the submarine from an all powered prototype to the original u.s. Navy submarine here are the nine undersea vehicles that were among the first in history to take the plunge USS Holland 1898 is at number nine USS Holland was the United States Navy's for his modern commissioned submarine although not the first military submarine of the United States and we will come to that at number two spot on list built in 1898 the 54 footer took its name from its inventor John Philip Holland an Irish born engineer who was one of the most prolific submarine pioneers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries the ship's armament consisted of a single torpedo tube and a pneumatic cannon known as dynamite gun it was powered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine for surface traveled but also included a 160 horsepower electric motor to move on the water while Holland never saw combat a debt served as a training vessel and experimental craft for the United States first crop of several wieners by the time it was decommissioned in 1905 the Navy had brought half dozen other attack subs into service Argonaut 1897 is at number eight Argonaut was a class of submarines built by engineer simon lake when use without clarification Argonaut generally refers to the second build and larger submarine launched in 1980 Eltham or she was 36 foot long cigar-shaped and built of steel she had a gas engine a propeller dynamos searchlight and pumps for air and water the subs most unusual feature was a set of wheels that allowed it to drive on the sea floor and it also had a Paris a diving chamber and a floating hose to provide air for the engine and the crew lake initially used the Argonaut to salvage sunken shipwrecks and the Chesapeake Bay but in 1898 he used it to sail from Norfolk Virginia to Sandy Hook New Jersey a trip that has since been called the first open ocean voyage by a submarine the journey earned Lake widespread acclaim and congratulatory letter from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by author yields Byrne he went on to develop dozens of underwater vehicles for the US Navy and produce more than 200 patents a tenure to 1864 1802 at number seven was a pioneering submarine launched in 1864 by the spanish engineer Narcisse material it was the first air independent and combustion powered submarine and was the first submarine to overcome the basic problems of machine powered underwater navigation the 1802 was 46 feet long 6.6 feet wide and 9.8 feet high her displacement was 46 tons and her interior volume was 29 cubic meters she was built of olive wood with oak reinforcements and a 2 millimeter thick layer of copper for ballast tanks of eight cubic meters capacity were located symmetrically on each side in the free flooding areas between the streamlined outer light hull and the inner pressure hull ballast tanks could be flooded at will to submerge and surfacing was achieved by forcing air into them with the pump pitch during diving was controlled by a weight which could be moved longitudinally or along a rail remotely controlled by the helmsman the submarine also had emergency mechanism intended to jettison the ballast to allow it to surface quickly and now at number six the diver 1864 the diver Orla Plummer was a French submarine launched on 16 April 1863 she was the first submarine in the world to be propelled by mechanical power rather than human captain Simeon Burgess who made the plans a naval constructor Charles Brune began working on the design in 1859 at rush for one of the first submarines to use mechanical power the diver was a French made craft designed by naval officers Samir Burgess in Salzburg rather than relying on hand cranks foot paddles or treadmills to move its propeller this 140 foot behemoth he used a piston engine powered by compressed air stored in tanks the air also help provide the crew with oxygen and served as a means for automatically emptying its ballast tanks the diver made several successful dives but it's limited air supply and dangerously unstable structural design led to it being removed from active duty in 1872 many of its problems were later rectified in 1888 with the construction of the French submarine Jim node a Niblick craft that ran on electric power at number five Cs as Holly 1863 HL Hunley often referred to as Hunley was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War only demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare and she was the first combat submarine to sink a warship USS Housatonic although Hawley was not completely submerged and following her successful attack was lost along with her crew before she could return to base the Confederacy lost 21 crewmen in three sinkings of honey during her short career she was named for her inventor Horace Lawson Hundley shortly after she was taken into government service under the control of Confederate States Army at Charleston South Carolina Hawley nearly 40 feet long was built at Alabama and launched in July 1863 it sank on 29th August 1863 during a test run killing five members of her crew she sank again on 15 October 1863 killing all a darfur second crew including Horace Handley himself who was aboard at that time even though he was not a member of the Confederate military both times holly was raised and returned to service at number four the sea devil 1855 William Bower was a Bavarian inventor and engineer who built several hand powered submarines he built his first submarine in 1850 but only narrowly escaped with his life after its sank in 50 feet of water during a demonstration I'm debtor the Bavarian inventor continued experimenting and eventually received funding from the Russian government for a new vessel after traveling to st. Petersburg in 1855 he constructed the sea devil 52 food submersible capable of carrying a crew of dozen men the ship boasted several technological breakthroughs including multiple ballast tanks for a turbulence II a crude airlock and a propeller that was powered by crewmen operating an internal treadmill the same devil would eventually make more than 130 successful dives before being lost at sea at number three Nautilus 1800 Nautilus was a submarine first tested in 1800 Fulton built the first submarine of copper sheets over iron reps at the Perry boat yard in Rouen it was 21 point 3 feet long and six point four feet in the beam propulsion was provided by a hand-cranked screw propeller the hollow iron kill was the vessels ballast tank flooded and emptied to change buin see two horizontal fins diving planes and modern terms on the stubby horizontal rudder controlled angle of dive overall Nautilus resembled a modern research submarine such as the NR one having a long-term hull the design included an observation dome somewhat similar in appearance if not functioning to the conning tower of later submarines when surfaced a fan-shaped collapsible sail reminiscent of those popular on Chinese ships could be deployed air beyond that enclosed within the vessel could be provided by a snorkel constructed by waterproof leather number two turtles 1775 turtle was the world's first admissible vessel with a documented record of use in combat it was built in 1775 by American David Bushnell as a means of attaching explosive chargers to ships in a harbour for use against Royal Navy vessels occupying North American harbors during the American Revolutionary War Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull recommended the invention to George Washington who provided funds and support for the development and testing of the machine turtle resembled a large as much as a turtle and it was about 10 feet long 6 feet tall and about 3 feet wide and consisted of two wooden shells covered with tar and reinforced with steel bands it dived by allowing water into a bilge tank at the bottom of the vessel and ascended by pushing water out through a hand pump it was propelled vertically in horizontally by Hand Crank propellers and it also had 200 pounds of lead aboard which could be released in a moment to increase Bullen sea Manton operated by one person the vessel contained enough air for about 30 minutes and had a speed in calm water of about 3 miles per hour at number one drebbel 1622 1624 Cornelius drebbel was a Dutch engineer and inventor who built one of the first navigable submarine in 1620 British mathematician willem born make some of the earliest known plans for a submarine around 1578 but the world's first working prototype was built in 17th century by Cornelius drebbel drebbel sub was probably a modified rowboat coated in grease leather and manned by a team of oarsmen sometime around 1620 he used it to dive 15 feet beneath a rivet Eames during a demonstration witnessed by King James and thousands of astonished Londoners unfortunately none of Troubles plans or engineering drawings has survived to today so historians can only guess about how his diving boat actually operated some accounts say it was submerge via a collection of bladders or wooden ballast tanks while others suggest that a sloping bow and a system of weights were used to propel the boat underwater when it was rode at full speed and with that we've come to the end of our video for today but if you liked the video don't forget to hit that like and subscribe button and thank you so much for viewing in we'll see you in our next video bye bye
