[Music] good morning folks and welcome to a beautiful post Labor Day Canyon morning I hope everybody had a great weekend out there I spent most of it driving this Ferrari 812 superfast and boy is that a presumptuous name but let me tell you in many ways this vehicle does live up to presumptuous names I've had this thing for about five days now today is my last day with it it makes me sad but I have learned some things so we are gonna go for a lovely drive but there's a lot of information here and I don't want to have to try and remember it so give me them here's some quick facts okay this is the the a12 super fast it's the replacement for the f12 berlinetta and tour de france that went out a couple of years ago it has a six point five liter v12 making 789 horsepower it is the most powerful naturally aspirated engine ever produced for a production car it is one of if not fee great engines it makes 530 pound-feet of torque at 7,000 rpm and then peak horse powers at 8500 s so your peak power band is incredibly narrow but it makes so much power that you can really use a lot more outside the peaks Ferrari says zero to 60 and 2.9 seconds which is probably traction limited given the front-engine rear-drive configuration the top speed of 211 miles an hour aided by an active Aero system in the rear diffuser that reduces drag at high speeds the gearbox is the Getrag 7-speed dual-clutch more or less shared with the 488 and four five eight they just move it with a torque tube to the back the the 812 looks really long in actuality the footprint is only about the same size as a Corvette but the front engine v12 is actually a front mid-engine v12 the entire 12 cylinder engine is behind the front axle and it comes like halfway into the cabin and it gives you that very exaggerated long nose look I'm almost sitting on the rear axle there's 20 inch wheels all around with 275 s in the front and 315 s in the back the brakes are from the laferrari they're Brembo six piston for piston ceramics 15 point seven inches in the front and fourteen point two in the back and the reason they're so big is because by Ferrari standards 812 out of a Parker its 3,800 pounds and change which by Ferrari standards is heavy and big tires big engine big brakes all mean one thing that you're fighting big weight so let's have a drive and see if those things can overpower Ferrari only makes this car out of tradition they know the rest of us know that at the top tier of performance in the exotic sports car game mid-engine is really where it's at but they remember their heritage building these front-engined GTS back to the GTO back to Enzo Ferraris original plan and so they keep making this out of tradition it is not the best way forward it is however fabulous excuse to continue making this engine right now we're in race mode this has the titanium exhaust tip it's formitz at all but it does help make it sound real crazy these front mid rear cars it's hard to get that very exotic very special feeling because they're all they all drive in sort of a similar way you know from at a high-end Viper to a Corvette zr1 to this the real difference in those cars is not how they feel so much as their engines these supercharged v8 of the bed the Viper the v12 of this and it's really where a lot of your that and the fact that you've got a dual clutch gearbox here the Viper is as fast as your hands move for something that's a point for for something that's going against and then the Corvette the automatic is terrible although the main engine one is on its way out both GM and Ferrari stuck with the front-engine formula probably a few years past their prime just because that's what the tradition is of their cars now let's hope that this tunnel here does not mean roadwork right now and we can get a little bit just a little bit 4000 rpm that's like me in the tunnel in Monaco I'm crazy this engine is such a jewel I mean if I if I could build myself the perfect car I'd have a Ferrari 488 but instead of the twin turbo motor I would just stick this in the back and then you handle that hybrid system you get laferrari that's how you end up there so the engine is just an animal it's got such long legs such a wide power vanity right now I'm between four and 6,500 and even then I'm probably making weird of making use of life five on a horsepower light you can short shift this thing like crazy and still be just tearing us adaptive suspension with with the default being sport actually in here on Angeles forest highway where the tarmac is really good sport is fine you can press a button on the steering bumpy road mode and that's sort of my default for driving around the city it's it is actually quite comfortable although it does need to be said that no front-engine car will really ride as well as as a well-set-up made a rear-engine car because of the geometries but because it's front mid this is about as good as you're going to find anywhere in a crazy-fast the brake feel is really good a steering is literally the quickest steering ratio I've ever used in a in a front-engine car I mean the the mid-engine Ferraris have maybe a little bit quicker steering ratio than this but this is really really fast we have a Tesla in front of us and it looks like they're going to turn off that gives our or ma'am engage is the license plate good for you yeah the steering's really fast the ratio is really short and even to make like a 90-degree corner in the city you just go 180 degrees with the wheel you don't even have to actually take your hands off the wheel Ferraris newest on wheel blinker system where you can actually talk to them from the back as well as the front which I like [Music] is that engine that is just magnificent I had to say you know although it feels like the front tires are a million miles away in my hand it really doesn't steer that way it steers credibly sharp that's the upside of having 275 tires at the front is it good the sharpest in your spirit the downside is if the road brought it out of it you do yet travel the gearbox is very good as I said in my 488 review it's not like PDK PDK is like having a personal road exactly the same thing every time this is like having a really really skilled Italian artisan that does close enough to the same thing every time that you're like oh you're good at your job but different enough that you're like this has charm to it so it has a variation of how it changes gears and what it does what it does why it does it rather than pdj or Aaron's version of the gearbox which is formulaic and robotic and less freestyle whoo this tearing really is crazy and I love the steering wheel is great I don't love flat bottoms but this thing is really really race-inspired and so when someone does it in a car that's really not deserving the Audi s3 is not race-inspired you know what I mean this will I ever tire of this engine probably but it's also hot they got a bump of like 45 horsepower this the old-school way they punched out the motor they went from a 6:30 to a 65 who's just punching out in a displacement in 2019 but I mean the car D is a little grampa light in turn you understand that this formula does not have a lot of life left in it goddamn suspense whoa it's hard to argue with the sound like that really really what's the difference between this and exotic feature of the engine fact that it makes all that power and that beautiful sound with almost no vibrations in Canada a dual clutch gearbox that handles that kind of power I mean I have I have zero quality nor should I was a time when you can have a Ferrari and maybe the Porsche or whatever other friends I think that's over extremely high quality automobile befitting its first time [Music] that's the first time I hit a red line it's hard to do that there's so many reps this has the optional carbon buckets which are good unless you happen to have lower back problems like me in which case there is a lie and it sort of curves your spine in a way that's not for cholitas and comfort join norms stores bananas dead and what's crazy this is the performance right the screaming v12 the unbelievable pace 211 mile an hour top speed and then it's a total pussycat I mean it's a total puss again cranks radio sounds pretty good Bluetooth works finally got us beat got a real trunk although it's not huge considering the size it's a totally normal their dislike I wouldn't you wouldn't buy one of these as a special weekend car because that would almost be a disservice to it it's like a normal car it's a totally normal car when you want that in terms of parking it in terms of just just ease of daily use there's nothing weird about it and then come on here and it's it's it's Looney Tunes it's just bananas now it comes at a price an awful big price price so egregious I wrote it down the base price is three hundred and thirty six thousand dollars okay that's actually it's expensive but it's actually pretty reasonable considering what you get this demonstrator has and I'm not making this up a hundred and thirty seven thousand five hundred dollars in options two of those options it's about four fifteen options two of those options might affect performance forged wheels titanium exhaust tips that's it the rest of the options package and again we're talking Ferrari we're talking options and we're talking very complex shapes of carbon fiber but some of the most egregious offenders before we get out of here Alcantara interior carpet $4,200 carbon fiber under door cover ten thousand dollars carbon fiber interior door panels 7500 carbon fiber dashboard inserts there's one two three four five of those well I don't know what it was just beeping at but that's $7,500 front and rear parking cameras six thousand and then the riser which is a manual ratchet that allows you to raise this seat is twenty five hundred dollars so there's more those are just the most egregious offenders so you could buy it base eight twelve even an eight twelve with a couple of options and a Ferrari 430 or a 599 you could buy a second pretty awesome for a hook with the amount of options so option your cars wisely do I know what it's like to be able to spend five hundred thousand dollars on a daily driver Ferrari no I can't put myself in that mindset but if you can I'd still advise you to take it easy on some of the carbon-fiber because it can get out of hand lastly before we get out of here Hannah my wife and I have discussed the car and we have a list of things we don't like and they are small because it's a $500,000 awesome Ferrari but things we don't like the HVAC directional arrows are very hard to read there's a strange Creek noise which I heard in the both the Ferrari 599 and 612 and I drove them when you go from zero to three miles an hour it might be the diff engaging it might be a normal sound but it sounds like a creek and I don't know what it is maybe someone can explain it to me but the car is not broken it just makes a noise you know a Nissan GTR does those clunks this has a creek it's weird but it's there if you put the car in reverse to park it and then you sit there that camera will be stuck on reverse it won't let you do anything else until you turn the car off and the start/stop really stinks on this and the button is hard to find it's up here next to the rearview mirror and it took me like three days to find it so those are the sum total of my criticisms oh and it's not a criticism but its objective I got 7 miles per gallon having 200 miles around the city in this car seven that is actually tied for worst of all time with the Jeep Grand Cherokee track hawk congratulations so thank you to Ferrari for letting me have a go this thing is really really awesome even if it does have a couple of little quarks and I hope they continue to make this car even though it doesn't really have a place in the world it certainly has a place in the Ferrari canon and thank you to you for watching and I'll see y'all later
