could machines ever be capable of thinking and reasoning exactly like a human artificial intelligence is not merely a science fiction concept but an Ever evolving reality that has progressed through different stages over the years each stage marks a big step forward in machines being able to think and even outsmart humans in different ways the question is where do we stand now and where are we headed let's explore the seven stages of AI stage one rule-based artificial intelligence systems back in the early days of artificial intelligence there were these systems based on rules that set the stage for what was to come these early systems sometimes called single task systems worked by following a set of rules or instructions written by programmers picture playing a game of chess against one of these early smart machines it knew every possible move an outcome thanks to its strict programming it could figure out the best move to make but it couldn't learn or adapt Beyond those set rules that's what happened with deep blue in 1997 it was made by IBM and it beat Kasparov the world chess champion after tying in a match the year before that win really changed how people thought about computers and showed that there was still a lot of untapped potential in this technology the these systems were great for tasks with clear patterns like spotting mechanical problems or sorting out tax forms they were reliable and did their job well but they couldn't understand context or deal with situations that weren't already programmed into them they just didn't have the ability to learn and think flexibly like a human can even though these early AI systems were pretty basic they paved the way for the cool stuff that came later they showed that machines could handle specific tasks intelligently but it was obvious that to really mimic human smarts we'd need something a lot more advanced stage two knowledge and context aware systems the next step in ai's Journey was all about grasping something really important context these improved systems weren't just sticking to strict rules anymore they were able to remember information and use it to shape their responses in a more flexible way giant databases began to be constructed storing all sorts of information about the world from historical facts to how things are connected inspired by how our brains work neural networks allowed machines to learn from data and make guesses and natural language processing made it easier for us to chat with them we saw glimpses of this earlier with Innovative tools like Eliza a computer program from the 1960s developed at MIT but now we see it best in Virtual assistance like Siri or chat GPT ask about the weather in a city right now and you'll get an answer follow up with and tomorrow and without needing more info the AI knows we're still talking about the same city it remembers that detail to craft an appropriate response while they're not quite thinking for themselves yet these systems made a big leap by going Beyond strict rules and understanding context that's why our chats with machines are getting a bit smoother nowadays stage three specific domain systems as artificial intelligence moved forward a new stage came up where these Technologies became really good at specific things instead of just knowing stuff these systems got really smart in particular Fields one notable example of this phase was IBM's project Watson back in 2006 IBM publicly announced Watson an artificial intelligence Endeavor aiming to develop a computer capable of understanding and responding to questions in natural language the goal was to go beyond traditional data processing and provide machines with the ability to comprehend human context this endeavor took five long years culminating in Watson gaining worldwide recognition in 2011 when it participated in the renowned TV game show Jeopardy and defeated two of the top human contestants this Milestone demonstrated Watson's capability to process vast amounts of information understand natural language and provide accurate real-time responses one of the fields where Watson has made a significant impact is Medicine by analyzing loads of medical info Watson helps doctors diagnose and treat complex diseases it can look at a patient's symptoms compare them to a huge database of medical cases and give doctors Smart Suggestions for treatment these highly specialized artificial intelligences acquired knowledge and understanding of their particular domain that far surpassed what any human could achieve thanks to their ability to analyze vast amounts of data identify complex patterns and make informed decisions or predictions at staggering speeds and though we're impressed by what they can do they still don't match up to what we typically think of as artificial intelligence stage four thinking and reasoning this is where things get really interesting once a machine had the ability to mimic the thinking and reasoning processes of the human mind we could begin to talk about true artificial intelligence but this is a big challenge for us humans because if a machine can match or even beat human smarts do does that mean it can act just like us and what about reasoning our ability to think logically and make smart decisions how do we even know if an AI can do that the answer came in the form of the cheering test during the cheering test evaluators engage in various text-based communication games with both real humans and artificial intelligence programs machines or chat Bots it's a blind test so evaluators don't know if their mess ing a human or a chatbot if AI programs succeed in generating responses similar to humans to the point where evaluators struggle to distinguish between the human and AI program it's considered that AI has passed so if AI can grasp complex Concepts solve novel problems and even generate creative ideas it's said to have logical reasoning processes just like a human current generations of AI i programs like Google's Lambda and open ai's chat GPT for example have come close to passing the cheering test thanks to techniques such as machine learning and deep learning that enable them to learn from experience and improve over time but as I said it's still not quite there let's see what's next stage five general artificial intelligence AGI now we're talking about something that's it's mostly just an idea General artificial intelligence or AGI this is like the ultimate goal of AI where these Technologies could do everything a human mind can do and maybe even more in recent years generative artificial intelligence models have been a real phenomenon but these systems have limitations and for years companies and researchers have been working in an even more ambitious field that of General artificial intelligence unlike previous systems focused on specific tasks or domains a true AGI would have the ability to learn reason and apply knowledge comprehensively regardless of how diverse or complex the intellectual activities involved may be not only that artificial general intelligence or AGI would be able to make judgments and reason in situations of uncertainty based on learning and training as well as communicate in natural language plan or learn in other words it would possess all-encompassing and self-aware intelligence an artificial general intelligence would be capable of Performing all tasks that humans do and even others they are not capable of over time it is estimated that such AGI systems could replace humans in virtually any field and render human labor obsolete which would have enormous enous social and economic implications but all of this remains as more theory for now well at least as far as public knowledge goes stage six artificial superintelligence ASI now we're getting into even trickier territory we're talking about artificial superintelligence a level of cognitive abilities that would far surpass those of the human mind this term was coined by Ray curtz director of engineering at Google advocate of the term Singularity and a well-known figure in this field according to his view machines will surpass the touring test by 2029 but his predictions go further he explains that once we create AGI that system will improve itself at an exponential rate until it reaches a point where its intelligence operates at a level incomprehensible to human understanding standing at that point The Singularity will be reached and he has a date for the arrival of this hypothetical superintelligence 2045 so with ASI AI wouldn't just be as good as humans it could be even better it could do things faster better and more efficiently an ASI could tackle really tough problems like climate change or diseases that we haven't been able to solve it could come up with ideas and innovations that we can't even imagine right now giving us insights into the universe that we can't even dream of but this also brings up some big worries what if this super smart AI gets out of control or does things we didn't plan for it raises some really important questions about who's in charge what intelligence really means and even what Consciousness is it's kind of scary but it's also really really exciting now let's talk about the end game of AI Evolution stage seven the AI Singularity we're talking about a hypothetical future point where technological progress becomes practically uncontrollable and irreversible causing big changes in human civilization or to put it in a slightly more alarming way the technological singularity will be that moment in history where technological development reaches an unprecedented point a moment absolutely different from anything before because machines will match and surpass human intelligence this will lead to what Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom calls an intelligence explosion machines will enhance themselves so that each new generation being smarter will be able to improve its own intelligence giving rise to another new generation even smarter and so on trying to guess what happens next is pretty much impossible who knows what these super intelligent machines will want and that brings up some big worries will they take over the world and if they do what happens to us will they see us as a threat and get rid of us or will they let us stick around like we do with wild animals in the jungle but hey let's not panic the a I Singularity is still just an idea some people think it could happen others think it's just science fiction we can't know for sure what will happen until it happens what is sure though is that the Journey of artificial intelligence will continue to amaze us and shake up what we think we know it'll grow and change in ways we can't even imagine right now can we live alongside it or are we heading towards the end of humanity the only thing we can do is to wait and see if you like this video
