[Music] in 2010 the largest Manhunt in modern British history was launched when R Mo declared war on North Umbria police for somebody to actively hunt a police officer it's so sick in just one week the 37-year-old excon murdered and maimed in a vengeful Rampage you would have seen at least one policeman at any time full body armor gun the lot for 7even days the former bouncer evaded over 500 officers we had no idea where he was and this man still had his gun sending a wave of Terror through rural North umland I thought I'm sure to be next at this rate I was just petrified but what caused this father of three to snap and embark on a deadly Killing Spree there's really only one way it's going to end I'll come to get you I'm not on the run I am coming to get you [Music] [Music] [Music] the third of July 2010 Newcastle upon time England a city known for its industrial past and vibrant night life over the years Newcastle has acquired a real reputation as a Party City it's incredibly popular with stag dos and head and dos um uh and it's a really vibrant night life it's got a reputation has been a very friendly place and it's a sort of city where you will run into the same people and in the same pubs and clubs it's by no means a crime hot spot in fact it's a really safe area to live so to to to experience what we experience in July 2010 was way out of the normal for this area as Friday night became Saturday morning revelers filled newcastle's clubs and bars unaware that just 7 miles away one party was about to come to a tragic end 2:30 a.m. bertley the sound of gunfire was about to ring out through the quiet residential streets following a night out at a local bar Samantha stobbart and Christopher Brown visited a friend's house Samantha and her new boyfriend Christopher were uh enjoying a social evening with her parents and friends the young couple were unaware that an armed man with deadly intent was hiding in weit outside as their evening Drew to a close Samantha and Christopher prepared to leave when both Samantha and Christopher emerged for the house they confronted them he immediately shot Christopher in the upper body and then as Christopher tried to run away he shot him a second time and while he was lying injured he reloaded the gun and shot a defenseless injured Christopher on the ground the third shot proved to be fatal he then turned his attention to Samantha who was by this time inside the house and he fired a shot through the window and then he calmly walked [Music] away with one dead and another critically injured local journalist Sophie Dy was one of the first to report on the deadly spree the 3rd of July in 2010 was um a normal Saturday shift for us or or so we thought when we came in we rang around the Emergency Services got caught up with anything that had been happening overnight and told us that there was an incident going on in in bertley when police started releasing details they described it as a domestic disturbance when we got to the scene local people were were telling us that um a a man had been released from prison come out there shot his ex-girlfriend and shot her new partner as the morning wore on we were asking people do you know who her ex-boyfriend was and the name r Mo was mentioned born on June the 17th 1973 R Thomas mo had an unstable childhood he's always been looking for his dad from being young and his man would never say who his dad was he said a lot that he lacked a father figure he lacked a a standard normal family life his early years were further Complicated by his mother's mental health issues his man was never there who was always living with his gr she used to show more like the good qualities of life and look after him the idolized too and that was his main like happy own his mother remarried in 1986 and Ral Mode's teenage years were marked by a fractur relationship with his stepfather the stepdad didn't like R too much and used to be off with him all the time I don't even think his man was there really looking after done too well either so he wasit getting a bit more withdrawn at the age of 24 Mo severed contact with his family and after a series of failed relationships met Samantha stard in 2004 the one thing that Realo was was desperate to have was a stable Family Life the one thing he didn't have as a child and this he thought he would get with some of the stubbar but their six-year relationship broke down in 2010 when Mo was imprisoned for the assault of a [Music] relative the 1st of July 2010 11:00 a.m. Her Majesty's prison Durham Mo was released after serving just over two months of a 16we sentence devastated by his broken relationship with Samantha stobbart that time in prison gave him time to think his jealousies were emphasized his feelings of mistrust to towards Samantha were Amplified immediately after being granted his freedom he began to meticulously gather supplies for an attack and armed himself with a saof shotgun modifying the ammunition to make it even more lethal a normal shotgun cartridge would contain um an amount of ball bearings on top of the the the explosive charge mot removed a portion of those ball bearings and packed in smaller items of of metal in there um and I guess his mindset behind that was to cause maximum damage at 2:40 a.m. on the 3rd of July just 48 hours after his release Mo put his plan into action gunning down his ex-girlfriend Samantha stobbart and her new partner Christopher Brown on the surface a vengeful attack by a jilted lover but deep down a festering resentment remained and Ral Mode's bloody spree was just beginning lost everything through use I've comeing to get you I'm not on the run I am coming to get you the 3rd of July 2010 bertley tin and Weir watched over by the iconic Angel of the North overnight this small town had become the scene of a violent crime less than 48 hours after being released from prison 37-year-old R Mo had shot his ex-girlfriend Samantha stobbart and murdered her new boyfriend Christopher Brown in a deadly Killing Spree Mo had met Samantha 6 years earlier in 2004 he was a 31-year-old bouncer working in newcastle's thriving club scene she was just 16 years old ID to get in cuz she was under age and then he just met her from there that's when he started meeting her and he just see fell L he was a bodybuilder so he used to wear these cutout vests that showed that showed everything off so yeah he he was really proud of his muscles and he thought he looked great she was young she was good-looking she had a fantastic figure and he was a lot older than her and I think all his birthdays had come at once cuz he met her after six years together Samantha gave birth to a baby girl and mo became a father once more having also won custody of two daughters from a previous relationship I think being a father was very important to ret was something that he aspired he aspired to be a good father he had children from previous relationships to Samantha and things hadn't worked out there he hadn't achieved the per perfect family he had difficult fractious relationships with girlfriends he had difficult relationships with his children and he had an incredibly difficult relationship with um Samantha stobar he was a big uh character he was a big figure he's intimidating Mo has admitted to domestic violence in previous relationships specifically with Sam stubbert he did that in a way where he portrayed her as being provocative as if Sam made him do it and this is something we see very commonly with domestic violence perpetrators it was always Samantha's fault Samantha shouldn't agitate him or Samantha shouldn't do this or he would hit her she would come over here and then he would come over here and sweet talk her and she'd go back and then she would be back for a few months and he would have an argument and he HT her again so she was back again they position themselves to be the victim of emotional abuse or provocation and they say they lash out because they tried to be reasonable they'd done everything else they could yet again this is just an example of a narcissist manipulating the truth on the 10th of June 2010 whilst he was behind bars Samantha took the opportunity to put a definitive end to her abusive six-year relationship with Mo fabricating a story that her new partner was a police officer when moat shot and killed Chris Brown of Point Blank Range Mo was still of the belief that Chris Brown was a police officer Christopher Brown wasn't a police officer that was simply something Samantha had used to try and keep Mo away he was a karate instructor and he was delivering leaflets around the doors when she met him it just seemed like a normal lad who was trying to make a go of it and his only sort of mistake if you can call it a mistake was he started a relationship with ra Mo's EST stranged girlfriend she thought that by telling him her new boyfriend was a police officer it would persuade R to keep his distance she couldn't have picked a worst professional in the world he had a long running hatred and paranoia about the police and this was yet another way in which he thought the police had taken something away from them mo had a history of dealings with North Umbria police the Vendetta he thought the north police had against him stretch back many many years um largely based on fairly minor incidents the police are always pulling them over for the slightest thing and he was just absolutely sick of it he say every time I pull into a petrol station and there's a policeman there the stoppers or they would just pull him over they check his fuel they check his tires it was just like a Non-Stop harassment who was who always on edge he became very paranoid about the police his house had CCTV cameras around it he recorded all his phone calls with social servicers and with the police he BL blamed them for his businesses going bust he blamed them for constantly being harassed I said well must have some reason you just I've never done anything I think for Mo that was his default setting when something didn't go right in his life he blamed the police and he only had one route left to take in his eyes which was to take revenge 29 minutes past midnight July the 4th less than 24 hours after the shootings in bertley Ral Moe made a chilling phone call to the Communication Center at North Umbria Police Headquarters hello there this is the gunman from Bley last night my name is r m um what I'm talking about is to tell you exactly why I've done what I've done right now my girlfriend has been on Affair behind my back with one of your officers this gentleman that I shot last night Nora police had received uh one call from R Mo effectively making full admissions to shooting Christopher Brown uh admissions to shooting Samantha but more worryingly and Sinister uh declaring an effective War if you like on North Umbria police officers and you police have took to much off me over the years I'm coming to get you I'm not on the run I am coming to get you I've lost everything through use right just just won't leave us alone right cuz I am off us now earlier that evening traffic officer PC David rathband was starting his late shift with the force under heightened alert for the Spree gunman from the previous night David was a very proactive police officer he completely understood the job it's what he wanted to do it was his calling I think 45 minutes past midnight moments after Mo's phone call to the police PC rathband was sitting in his patrol car unaware that his life was about to be turned upside down David had uh decided to sit up on the the A1 one of his favorite stopping points um to sit up somewhere where it's very busy where there's a High um a high volume of traffic coming past and waiting that's that's what it all comes down you're playing the waiting game there may be that opportunity for that vehicle that one vehicle you're looking for will come past um unfortunately for David the that night it did PC rathband was unaware Mo had changed vehicles and was now traveling in a black Lexus the vehicle he was expecting or or hoping to see had had been dumped earlier on that day that intelligence hadn't got out yet um and so David was effectively sat there waiting looking for something that wasn't going to come past the individual he was looking for did though in another car and that's when it all went horribly wrong just moments after making his call to the emergency services Mo's threat to the police became a brutal reality as his sickening spree continued moat it transpires drives past and sees David sat in his police car on his own um and decides to stop just on the ons slip for the motorway he got out and carrying a sonof shotgun he crept up to a marked police car PC rathband was aware that somebody was around his car he turned looked and saw this large man holding a gun pointing at him through the passenger window and his last thought before he was short was oh no it's R out and for that Split Second he knew was about to [Music] happen David had been horrifically injured he'd been shot twice in the face he was left blind there and then it's not the done thing is it to shoot a police officer there's a line there that people don't cross for somebody to actively go out and and hunt a police officer it's it's so sick leaving his third victim fighting for his life rote disappeared into the night amidst fears that his spree was far from over there was a real sense of um concern that PC wrath band wasn't going to be the final victim minutes later an agitated moat called North Umbria police once small just don't Newcastle yes abely not going to stop you're going to have to K right stop he rang again making it clear that he was responsible for shooting David rth Pand and again emphasizing that he would be willing to shoot more police officers he will come looking for us the gunman's Behavior was becoming increasingly irrational North Umbria police called an emergency press conference in an an attempt to reach out to Mo you have told us that the police are not taking you seriously I can assure you we are I want you to know that you have our full attention innocent people have been hurt this must stop now with one dead two in a critical condition and with clear intent to kill Again The elusive moat needed to be caught before his Killing Spree claimed further victims we had no idea where he was we had no idea where he was hiding out and every inquiry that we made that was an attempt to secure his arrest was going to involve specialist Firearms officers there was a major Manhunt then was launched and it became apparent that you know it was a story that none of us had ever experienced uh before in our careers in the period when we didn't know where R Mo was you know there were armed police raids going on all all over town side and it was moving all the time but but still there was no sign of real mod and I was completely terrified that week the police were looking for him and I just never went to bed I slipped on the set for the full week it was just [Music] terrifying less than 24 hours after the shooting of PC rband an unexpected twist emerged and Mo's ruthless spree threatened to escalate further late in the Sunday afternoon was two reports two separate reports which suggested that he may have had hostages with him and those were coming from the family of Carl NES and the family of kamaan as is typical in a hostage situation the police request to the media that we don't report uh that information because it may affect the safe recovery of the hostages of dynamic became very very complicated because we had an obligation to those hostages to try and save their lives that caused some issues in terms of how we proceeded with the man hunt the police were now aware that Mo was traveling in a black Lexus and the net was closing in on him we made a distinct of engine noise it was quite uh noisy and when we appealed to the public to help us find that car very very quickly it was identified and its location was identified and our Focus moved from almost a tin and Weir conurbation to the rural Countryside of Northumberland to Rothbury as the search moved into a new area and with the lives of two hostages in his hands the need to find Mo took on a new urgency his Savage spree was potentially spiraling out of control this man threatened to kill police officers this man had already shot a police officer and this man as far as we knew still had his gun 29 minutes past midnight the 4th of July 2010 R Moote called the emergency services and declared war on North Umbria police I'm coming to get you I'm not on the run I am coming to get you moments later he ambushed traffic officer PC David rathband as he sat in his patrol car shooting him twice at Point Blank Range before Vanishing into the night with two hostages police had released details of Mo's vehicle a black Lexus and sightings were quickly reported in the community of [Music] Rothbury less than an hour outside of Newcastle this small Market Town sits in the Rolling Hills of Northumberland if you drive north through Newcastle rothy is the first nice place you come to it's everyone's idea of a little village in the Hills it's quite quaint everybody knows everybody else it's a really tight Community it's just a lovely wonderful place and it's um yeah it's just it's just beautiful but Rothbury was about to become the focus of the world's attention until the police car rode up the street it was just an ordinary day and I think the last thing we expected was to have anything to do with the whole Mo Saga at all on the morning of the 6th of July 3 days after Mo spre had begun the black Lexus was found abandoned in a local car park just got to the office and I got a phone call to say uh raot car has been found in rth Brey get here now I just thought oh my God this is big this is huge this is something that's never happened before in our paper's history the hunt for the gunman and his hostages intensified as police resources poured into the immediate area when it first started um if you look down here you would have seen at least one policeman at any time full body armor G the lot The Manhunt would soon reach unprecedented levels involving over 500 officers a 2-mile exclusion Zone was set up in the Rothbury area anything that involved sighting or any arrest of RA Mo was going to involve the use of armed police officers there was no other way to do it with the police on high alert for a potential hostage standoff the story was about to take an unexpected turn realm mode had already revealed that he had taken some hostages but it became apparent as well that the police were unsure as to whether they were hostages or accomplices Carl NES and Karama onean were in fact in collusion with Mo they had each delivered two messages to their families one appeared to be a genuine hostage letter but the second was a note explaining that they were actually in the safe hands of their friend Ral Mo their concerned families submitted these letters to the police while we were quickly trying to get our resources moved Mo was able to melt into the countryside whereas Ness and aan tried to make their escape along the open road uh the police helicopter was very quickly above them one police car drove past them with an officer in to possibly identify them once he did that he radioed to colleagues who followed in a second police car on Mark to throw a Thunder flash at their feet this momentarily stunned them and other officers came out and arrested them uh at gunpoint with NES and Awan in custody the full extent of their involvement in MO spree started to become clear rot and car mes were close friends aan less so but they um they went with him on his um exercise of Revenge and murder they drove him around on the night that he shot PC wrath band car Ness was with him and drove him to Samantha stobart's house so there's no doubt that they were fully involved footage emerged that revealed the movements of Mo and his accompli before and during his spree they're caught on CCTV you know buying in things from Tesco and and places they even you know to them it seemed like a bit of an adventure they were buying like barbecue sauce and and all sorts of of everyday items to help moat but what led two men to assist R Mo in his vengeful Rampage he was highly manipulative he was able to make people feel as if they were in the wrong as if they'd wronged him and that gave him leverage and purchase to get other people to do what he wanted them to do they were very unusual characters in this because they didn't seem to gain anything other than in a way looking up to Mo they wanted to impress him they were more than willing to help and carry out these horrific acts and there was nothing in it for them Carl NES a bodybuilder and former nightclub Dorman had known Mo for several years having also worked as a bouncer in Newcastle during Mo's incarceration NES had been in regular contact with Moe through prison visits and telepone calls but one conversation was really interesting in that he asked NES to get a particular individual to visit him while he was in prison because he was an individual who could get him what he described was a car car with six wheels and when we looked at the people involved uh my only explanation for a car with six wheels as a gun and the associated [Music] ammunition the 7th of July 2010 Rothbury North umberland the day following the arrests of Awan and NES with Mo still at large police discovered a makeshift campsite where he'd been hiding out amongst the debris a disturbing message from Mo was found forcing the police to take urgent action the police called us all in for like an emergency press conference and told us that they had found a Dictaphone that that Mo had left in one of the places that he'd been camping out on that he gives dets of the fact that he's been following the media coverage that he'd been angered by it he was getting very very agitated by the way he was been portrayed in the press and he decided that or he declared on that dictaphone that for every lie that was told he would shoot an innocent member of the public information has now emerged that Mr moat has made threats towards the wider public fearing for Public Safety a media blackout was imposed police told us about this threat and the request to um not publish the material that might upset rote when they explain the reason why I think it was a collective draining of color from faces because none of us wanted to put anyone at any further risk than they already were [Music] at the 8th of July 2 days after the arrest of NES and Awan and Moe was still on the Run he no longer had a car he no longer had access to uh to money or as far as anyone knew no longer had access to the outside world he wasn't in touch with anybody else um so his ability to move around had clearly been reduced but how was this former nightclub bouncer evading capture in the north umbrian Wilderness we knew he had a l Rothbury he holed frequently in in Rothbury he enjoyed camping it was an area that was familiar to him we actually spoke to an ex-girlfriend of his who lived in the village um he used to go fishing there he knew the area so he knew what he was doing you always feel more comfortable in an environment that you're familiar with uh you know you can relax get in tune take stock and make a plan from there despite the 2-mile exclusion zones set up by the police the challenging terrain provided Mo with plenty of opportunities to remain invisible it's quite rugged terrain there's lots of farms there's lots of fields there's probably lots of places that you could hide out that a lot of people wouldn't know about if you look at the amount of forest around here that's a great place to be straight away because the helicopter can't see you the police can't see you there's New Monic we use when we're looking at hides and that New Monic is bliss and the base stands for Blends you've got the look at a place and you want to try and blend in with your natural environment the L stands for low when people are looking for you there's almost like a natural tendency to just look at eye level the eye is a regular make it a regular stay away from straight lines the S is for small keep it small anything too big and it's just going to jump out at you and the last one the second s is secluded once you get out of here you are in the middle of nowhere that's a good place to hide out people aren't going to see you there's nobody there to see you as the police search continued with no reported sightings of moat tension in the Rothbury area was Rising people were scared everyone was conscious that there was an armed and dangerous man on the loose rumors were Rife and fears were growing that the gunman could even be living amongst them there were rumors that Rite had gone into the center of the village during the man hunt just over here is a storm drain um where it's thought that raite was hiding out people were saying that there are storm drains that lead underneath the village that you could go from remote area and actually end up coming up through a drain in the village so you can nip in in the early hours of the morning and just become a scavenger Scavenging and in the bins in allotments green houses these are the gardens behind the wall wall where it's thought that raite was going in to steal vegetables and food like the guy at the bottom of the village who found that this Tomatoes were going missing I mean there were different sightings and in different places there was a house that he potentially went into and laid down on the bed because a a resident had reported like an imprint of his head in their pillow as Mo continued to remain one step ahead of the police local residents were becoming increasingly unnerved well I think there was a little moment of panic because obviously when the police are telling you to get in lock the doors stay away from the windows you're assuming there's going to be bullets flying all over the place no one quite knew how much ammunition or how many guns he he had possession of and it was there was a real sense of fear throughout the area when Public Safety is your priority the police had saturated Rothbury so that in the event of any sighting or any confrontation between a member of the public and mo the police were only the heartbeat away at 7:25 p.m. on the 9th of July 6 days after the vengeful Rampage began a member of the public reported citing a man answering Mo's description on the banks of the river near the center of Rothbury as armed police descended a standoff developed as Mo raised the gun used to carry out his deadly spree but this time the weapon was pointing at his own head it was his intention that it would end in that field in Rothbury that night at 2:40 a.m. on the 3rd of July 2010 Ral Mo embarked on a vengeful Killing Spree leaving one dead and two more critically wounded Mo's car was finally found abandoned 3 days after his Rampage began in the quaint North umbrian Town of [Music] Rothbury 7:25 p.m. the 9th of July Rothbury Riverside having evaded capture for a further 3 days a member of the public reported sighting moat on the banks of the river kakat reports came through that he'd finally been cornered in an area on the edge of Rothbury Town [Music] Center press and public were immediately cleared from the area as armed police descended on the scene ladies and gentlemen for your own safety I need you to move back move back raote was just in front of the tree over there police were kind of on this um Road here being local we knew straight away where it was and we knew he wasn't going to get away he sunk to his knees put the gun to his head and uh the next Final hours of Mo's life were played out on the River Bank as the standoff between police and R moot unfolded the nation was captivated by Rolling 24-hour news it was a waiting game during the the hours where there was a standoff between Mo and the police it was live on every News Channel that there was and as journalists at the newspaper all we could do was was watch and wait just been glued to the television at night and waiting for things to happen the whole world seemed to be transfixed on what was happening in Rothbury that whole process of getting him to surrender was was happening uh and it went on and on this is um where the standoff took place um it was around this area here it's where rote was with the gun underneath him our armed officers or negotiators were there for the Long Haul behind the scenes police had been analyzing Mo's Behavior throughout the Spree preparing for every eventuality Cosmo had made contact with us a couple of times on Telephone there was always the light hood that we were going to confront him face to face so a team of negotiators had been working all week for that eventuality the new his background the knew what made him tick and the knew what annoyed him the he spoke emotionally about close relationships he he he was immune to any requests that they made of him and start try to persuade him that killing himself was not the only option after 6 hours of negotiation the mood of the stalemate changed as Mo became increasingly agitated you couldn't really see what was happening but you could hear that there was a commotion at that point it was clear to everybody present that he had made his mind up that he was ready to finish the whole episode the police attempted to incapacitate Mo with a shotgun style taser atly about quar 1 in the morning about 6 hours now after the um the standoff had started um there were a couple of sounds which clearly sounded like gunshots and there were a couple of [Applause] shouts it wasn't quite clear at that point U as the story broke as to what what had happened uh was it Mo committing suicide was it the police trying to take action at approximately 1:15 a.m. almost immediately after the police tasers were discharged Ral Moe fired the final shot of his Killing Spree shortly after an ambulance um crew took him to um Newcastle General infirmary and shortly after his arrival there it became known that he was actually dead um and he'd taken his own life with um the shotgun that he'd had with him throughout that [Music] week after the biggest British Manhunt of a generation involving over 500 police officers and costing North Umbria police in excess of 1 million pound R Mo's ruthless Rampage was finally over with him it seemed to though it had come to a point where he didn't have anything and when you get to that point when you start feeling like that then there's really only one way it's going to end and he had actually said to the the negotiators that uh it was his intention that it would end in that field in Rothbury that night once you come out to an environment like this particularly on your own it gives you a lot of time to self-reflect come the end of it I think because he'd been out for three days in a while I think he kind of thought hard about what he's done and who he's let down including himself and uh I think that's why it ended the way it did I think that they' finally come to it and he'd uh he he' just hit the point of no return in the wake of Mo's bloody violence one question remained what drove the former Bouncer and bodybuilder to commit these terrible crimes Mo was an individual who could not cope with all of the things that were happening to him that were going wrong and there often tends to be a triggering event something that happens in the immediacy that they can't cope with that tends to push them over the edge jealousy pure jealousy that I think he's done it um jealousy that he couldn't have Samantha so he's going to make sure nobody else had her he couldn't change his situation with stobber there was nothing he could do to win her back she'd replaced him with what he was fearful of was a better man he didn't want to go quietly he thought if I'm going to lose everything I want everyone to know that I want to get revenge on people that have wronged me but also I don't want them to forget me I'm not I'm not just going to walk away I'm going to make people notice me that's the key Hallmark of spree Killers with narcissistic backgrounds they blame everybody else they blame society they blame the authorities and other people need to be made to [Music] pay the 29th of February 2012 19 months after the devastating spree having been shot and blinded by Ral Mo PC David rathband took his own life at his home in blle North umberland David is gone um I missed my friend I still can't quite bring myself to delete his number off of my phone it's still there would David rband have taken his own life had he not been blinded by Roy Mo I I personally doubt it very much Samantha stard still Bears the scars and I'm sure she probably finds it difficult to move on and Christopher brown lost his life Christopher's mom Sally uh feels like her son is a forgotten one here and and I tend to agree with on the 11th of March 2011 Mo's accomplices Carl NES and kamaan were convicted of the attempted murder of PC David rathband and conspiracy to murder police officers NES was also convicted of the murder of Christopher Brown when you look at Carl NES who was given a 40e life sentence and a one who was given 20 year life sentences you think what would Mo have got and I think I'd rather see him uh accounting for his criminality for the deaths of Christopher and David I'd rather see him accounting for them in prison rather than taking the easy route which he did which was cly in 1997 world famous fashion designer Giani Vace was gunned down in the street he was entering his house we just heard sh outside's on the steps of the house who would have done something like that it was the culmination of a 3mon 2 and a half th000 mile Rampage I quickly realized that this was much much bigger than anything we had ever dealt with as the knock ticked the body count Rose he was like right there boom it was horrifying even 16 years doesn't change things and with it the question why had Andrew kunanon a good-looking and popular young man embarked on this devastating Killing Spree to think that Andrew killed Jan Versace was just about the most Preposterous thing that anybody could ever tell you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 1997 Miami Florida a city enjoying a Renaissance after a period of decline the neighborhood of South Beach leading the way a new reputation as a flamboyant and glitzy playground for The clubbers fashionistas and Playboys of any sexual orientation was developing in a sense and South Beach do not go hand inand I mean it was a place where people hooked up and it was a wild scene 1997 Miami Beach was a very upand cominging Place South Beach had been discovered in the early 9s and uh people were starting to flock to Miami Beach it was like the place to be people were paying big money for rooms that were once uh a dollar a night there were hundreds of dollars a night so it there was a big change in this area it became the the mecca for for modeling it became the mecca for um the the the designers coming down from from New York from Europe and this was where you know this was happening it was right here Miami was made desirable by one man in particular Giani Vace Vace was a household name in the fashion industry he dressed everyone from the opera stars to this film stars to royalty he was without doubt the most famous fashion designer in the world Giani faace was famous for his fashion design but here in Miami Beach he was famous just for being verace I mean where he went people took notice he was part of the Glamour and Glitz that was becoming South Beach Johnny was a a regular um uh whenever he was in town he was here about every day to get his newspapers um and and a cup of coffee uh the vachi mentioned is about four blocks away about a 3 3 minute walk everybody that you know came they always wanted to see the house and the the house of Versace built one such onlooker was 27-year-old Andrew [Music] [Applause] kunanon 8:40 a.m. July the 15th 1997 South Beach was waking to another perfect morning within half an hour one of the world's most brutal spree Killers would claim His Highest profile victim yet today is a day you never forget it's early morning Miami Beach there are joggers about a few news vendors have set up stores race uh had come in first newspapers and I said good day and he said good day and he left and went home 8:55 a.m. kunanon had spotted his prey he's already decided what he's going to do he's got the gun in his pocket he's not drunk he's not high on drugs he's just high on what he's about to do before Versace reached the safety of his home the killer made his move Vace was allowing himself into his own gated quarters he snuck up behind him and shot him at Point Blank Range man's shot please immediately please shot Versace we just heard gun shot waying outside on the steps of the house who would have done something like that well it was something like something out of the movies you know he was just uh he was gunned down right on his steps there was uh blood everywhere Mr bace was laying there on the steps uh there was magazines that he was holding in his hand on the floor uh we had bullet casings in the chaotic aftermath cunanan escaped once uh Mr Versace was shot the killer fled Northbound on Ocean Drive he came running right behind me he went right across the street into the parking lot policeman on a bicycle came right by I hadn't even moved from where I was standing and um he asked if I had seen you know Mr Versace I said yeah he just left and I said why and he says something terrible happened it didn't take long for the celebrity murder in Miami to become breaking news this whole area was filled with the satellite TV dishes a dozens of them I've never seen anything like it before or or since and it soon began to emerge that Versace was victim number five of a killing spree that had begun 3 months earlier at the opposite end of the country I quickly realized that this was much much bigger than anything we had ever dealt with in mi be despite the Global Spotlight days after the bace murder Andrew kunanon was nowhere to be found how did an Infamous Rampage killer end up in Miami on that hot summer day and how did a boy from San Diego suburb grow into America's Most Wanted Man Miami Florida and the brutal slaying of fashion designer Giani Vace has rocked America he is the latest victim of a 3-month fstate bloody Rampage what had driven Andrew kunanon to commit his killing spree and as the Miami Police tracked him in the aftermath of the Versace murder would they catch him before he killed again again 9:41 p.m. August the 31st 1969 National City California Andrew kunanon was born the youngest of four indulged by his parents cunanan was brought up in modest surroundings to a Filipino father and devoutly religious mother in a crimer ridden suburb of San Diego County they were not of of terrific means by any any stretch of the imagination U Pete kunanon his father was a was a stock broker his mother maryan kunan she was a bit of a doting mother it was only when his mother Maryanne inherited some money from her father the family were able to afford to move slightly up Market to an area that wasn't as dangerous wasn't as dirty from the start his father in particular encouraged the young Andrew to be status conscious and instilled in him a sense of self-confidence that would last a lifetime Andrew cunanan's first day at high school was not in rough National City but in one of California's wealthiest Seaside communities like many immigrant parents they wanted their son to have a better life than they had had in the home country and they were willing to sacrifice and be sort of submissive and subservient to Andrew so that he could have the lifestyle that they they would wish for their [Music] preny the esteemed Bishops was one of the country's top college prep schools and a breeding ground for future movers and shakers I remember Andrew uh at Bishop's I remember hearing his laugh and we immediately hit it off he was uh he was really kind of a card he was determined that his classmates who came from Rich families wouldn't know how poor his own family was cunanan's school fees were in fact stretching his parents' finances to the Limit and that meant that he created more and more uh stories about himself and tried to give the impression that he came from the sort of high upper class family that of course he didn't come from Andrew lived in a bit of a fantasy world for example he pretended like uh he was Sebastian from Brides had Revisited uh he'd carry a teddy bear around campus this need to conceal and to act basically and be on stage uh all the time continued through the end of our friendship at Bishops cunanan's Charisma and good looks were powerful and he wasn't afraid to use either he had the ability to to charm and he became quite a manipulative young man the warning signs of the man Andrew kunanon was to become were already there his Psychopathic Tendencies started at that early age because he became Adept at being a shallow face a different persona for what the situation required Andrew had a a gay veneer um that was part of his uh um Persona uh so the uh eminate uh or um androgynous even perhaps uh look that he had was all designed to to convey the impression I think that he was gay if you think about um Andrew taken to his logical conclusion Liberace comes to mind Elton John comes to mind he was basically the center of the universe on campus uh he was a giant explosion of personality but soon the stage at Bishops wasn't enough for Andrew kunanon after graduation cunanan gravitated towards the predominantly homosexual neighborhood of Hillcrest in San Diego the Hillcrest area is very Lively it's a great place to be uh gay and at the time was a sensational um opportunity for anybody uh coming from anywhere else in the country to uh be out and proud hungry for the high life and worshiping Fame and celebrity he began dating wealthy older men Who provided for him Andrew loved that freedom and uh reveled in in the opportunity to uh parade young men old men uh all sorts of uh companion Andrew kunanon had years of successfully negotiating his way through Californian High Society thanks to the patronage of his sugar daddies and well-meaning Friends Andrew Canan actually used um being gay as a way to climb a social ladder through his ability to seduce or be seduced by older men in powerful jobs he seemed to have quite a bit of money oftentimes would pull a nice fat wat of cash out uh buy drinks for everybody at the bar uh he didn't hold a job to the best of our knowledge he had a nice car that he would drive around he wore very nice clothes always put together well for almost 10 years he had enjoyed being a fixture in the San Diego gay community a charmer who talked big and parted hard Andre was a showman he had a story for everything he had a hellacious little laugh it's somewhere along the lines of a of a belt of a hyena perhaps getting poked in the rear with a pin we'll give it [Laughter] a you know but a lot more crazy than that but as he headed towards his 30s cunanan was faced with more beautiful younger men fighting for their place in the social spotlight as Canan progressed into his late 20s he realized he was slightly over the hill for the gay party scene canan's Fall From Grace began really when he dropped by one of his richest benefactors and now people were rejecting him they were turning their back on him they were starting also to not believe all of his lies he had this underlying insecurity compounded by an act that he had that wasn't working for him anymore cunanan was feeling increasingly isolated he may have had a wide Social Circle but he had few true friends to make matters worse Jeffrey Trail someone he was particularly close to had moved from San Diego to start a new life in Minneapolis Jeff was well-liked in the community he was uh witty bit dry humor I could see where he and Andrew uh we're we're close friends closely following trail to the North Star state was another of cunanan's ex-lovers David Madson the one he called the love of his life Dave Was An Architect he had a nice demeanor it was all American uh kellogs cornflakes box grin uh quite an easy going good guy cunanan felt abandoned he saw the friendship between tril and Madson as the ultimate betrayal the happier they seemed the angrier cunanan became he wanted a [Music] confrontation cunanan prepared to leave San Diego by holding a final get together with his friends an event that has since been dubbed the Last Supper Andrew had a very unique personality uh he was quite a grandstander he was uh one to uh leap up from the table if anybody should join the table introduce him with first and last names he was uh a gregarious individual he would always insist on being placed in the front room which looked out onto the street so that he could see and be seen the usual life and soul of the party was uncharacteristically subdued it was not a typical uh Showman's dinner table he didn't leap up he didn't chase people around he was uh softs spoken thoughtful contemplative perhaps um be fitting of the occasion kunanon claimed he wanted a new start instead it was the beginning of the [Music] end April the 25th 1997 Minneapolis Minnesota and kunalan arrives from San Diego for a weekend stay at madson's apartment Madson picked him up from the airport many people were concerned and warned Madson that Canan didn't seem him himself he said that he just needed to sort himself out and needed a place to stay Jennifer weberg was the caretaker of Harmony lofts in Minneapolis where David Matson lived I actually encountered David Matson and his friend that he introduced me to who was Andrew Andrew was nonresponsive David seemed rather irritated that he was being so aloof I saw this kind of puffy guy with a attitude that I can't see why how or why anyone would ever have been impressed with him or wanting to hang out with him sometime on Sunday the 27th of April something had finally pushed cunanan to the point of no return bitter with betrayal and driven by jealousy a vious argument ensued between Jeffrey Trail David Madson and Andrew kunanon with fatal consequences kunanon found a claw hammer in that apartment and started bludgeoning Jeffrey Trail following this attack kunanon calmly rolls Jeffrey tr's body up in a rug and pushes it unceremoniously behind the sofa as if no one would find it some spree Killers who are killing in a state of frenzy uh aren't interested in hiding the evidence after two days holed up in the apartment and with no apparent plan of what to do next kunanon fled the gruesome scene with Madson kunanon spontaneous murder of Trail happened so quickly that Madson was unable to comprehend what had happened or to even intervene that's the kind of thing that psychopaths are able to do with their powers of [Music] persuasion a few days later Jennifer weberg received some worrying news Tuesday I came home and there were two messages on my voicemail from co-workers of David mats and and they were very concerned because he had not shown up for work and people were looking for him knocked on the door David David are you in there are you in there and no sounds so I did have a master key and I opened the door it was horrifying she didn't know it at the time but what she had discovered was the beginning of one of America's most famous spree killings Jeffrey Trail had become Andrew kunan and's first victim May the 2nd Rush City shaso County I was on patrol in the morning and I got a call from our dispatchers they told me to meet uh two fishermen they were scouting an area to put a tent so they could come up to fish the next weekend and when they looked down by the lake they saw what they thought was a body this is the crime scene the fisherman stopped right about here and just pointed down toward the lake where they said the body was he was like right there boom so we didn't know who the who we had here until we put out a uh teletype to surrounding agencies that we had an unidentified deceased white male and Minneapolis Police called us back shortly thereafter and said that they were looking for a person that matched that description by the name of Dave m David Matson was now victim number two police on the scene piece together how events unfolded they drove their car down the hill together and David was still alive at the time they turned this way and then backed in here and had a conversation in this area for some time at some point in the conversation David must have realized that um he was in some sort of trouble with with Mr kunan and and so he jumped out of the car and ran this direction Andrew conanan shot him in the back he fell face down under the ground at which time Andrew kunanon turned him over and shot him you think you know somebody the person we thought we knew was uh longone less than a week after leaving his ex-lover dead in Rush City cunanan's Rampage gathered pace and took him 450 Mi Southeast to Chicago and to the door of 72-year-old property millionaire Lee miglin and his most vicious Slaughter so far Andrew kunan and's Killing Spree had begun in Minneapolis where he had bludgeoned to death his first victim Jeffrey Trail 60 Mi North and former lover David Madson had lost his life on the banks of Rush Lake now cunanan's Rampage would take an even darker turn May the 3D Chicago Illinois Lee miglin was a wealthy property developer well respected and well recognized in the city no one is sure what drove kunanon to his door although some speculate that they had met years before in California whatever cunanan's motivation Revenge retribution or simply robbery at some point over that may weekend miglin succumbed to what his elderly mother described as a worse death than Christ Canan overpowered Mr miglin tied him up put a sheet over him and tortured him this was a very cruel death in fact in some ways much crer than the death of his two friends earlier the way that Canan killed Mr miglin is quite different from how spree Killers often kill their victims this was not an indiscriminate shooting this took thought and he took pleasure from this and he engaged in Overkill he'd now crossed the Rubicon and was killing for the pleasure Lee miglin had become Andrew kunan and's third victim and now the FBI had entered the chase three dead bodies had earned cunanan the label armed and extremely dangerous he continued to evade capture despite the trace on miglin's car phone Canan takes off in miglin's Lexus um police are able to establish the movement of the car through its um phone which kunan started using a Countrywide APB had been issued for cunanan's arrest radio news reported that the killer was traveling in miglin's distinctive Lexus kunanon needed another vehicle at any [Music] cost May the 8th pensville New Jersey 765 M from Chicago a resting place for hundreds of Civil War soldiers and a hiding place for a spree killer on the run Vince point was so secluded um Miles and Miles off of the main Highway that drove through that through that area fence Point Cemetery is normally very quiet and [Music] peaceful cemeter caretaker William Reese had worked at fins point for 15 years bill and I did a lot of stuff together together uh we hung out together performed Civil War reenactments and long drives long talks bill was very uh special person he was kind uh very dedicated person also he he uh he he would he was very faithful he would be here right at 8:00 in the morning and he would spend the full day here bill was just a part of us bill was was there for us and we were there for Bill we were more like siblings than then we were you know workers enormously funny and a laugh that was infectious beyond words he was and his face lit up when he laughed it was a cold dark day that I remember and and it was uh you know I I had when I left I I don't know why I had a feeling but I had a feeling there was something wrong I was sitting in the living room and my wife and kids were on the couch it was near evening um uh Bill's brother Bob called and I answered the phone and Bob said I don't know how to say this but Bill was shot and killed um and then just kind of went numb Cemetery caretaker William Reese had become cunanan's fourth victim as William Reese is locking up for the day kunanon stops his car jumps out and asks William Reese if he could possibly let him have a glass of water cuz he's not feeling very well William ree invites kunanon in but within seconds kunanon pulled out Jeffrey tril's gun and shot William ree Dead with just one bullet where Bill was murdered was in the basement of the house I haven't been into that building since this happened um I don't think I could go back into that building after Bill was was shot and killed there even 16 years doesn't change things bill was not just a victim he was not just a um a cemetery caretaker he was loved he loved the family he loved people bill was a human being huge void in the family Andrew kunanon had gone from killing friends to murdering Strangers In Cold Blood this time there was no torture this time it was a quick death it's like kunan was trying to use different modus operandi to perhaps challenge the agents who were chasing him no one knew where kunanon would strike next what was driving him and who would be his next victim May the 12th 1997 Andrew kunanon had arrived in Miami Florida he was getting ready to shock a generation Miami was the perfect place to Harbor a chameleon like kunanon you know every killer who commits Multiple homicide has a comfort zone uh most spre Killers uh don't travel uh they stay within their own Community because they know that place they understand it better and they're able to get away with murder there are exceptions Andrew Canan was no multiple personality but he had a skill that very few people do have and that is he could change his appearance to look like dozens of other people Canan is America's Most Wanted Man yet he hides in plain sight he makes no attempt to disguise himself he makes no attempt to hide out in in the latest car he stolen it's hard to say if Canan was asking to be caught but I certainly think he was asking to have a showdown he was asking to have his day of Glory he'd paid for a month's rent in advance staying at the Normandy Plaza a once swish hotel in the ' 50s and he was living in plain sight around the beaches of Miami he needed some funds and he decided to go to a porn shop where he would exchange one of the gold coins he took from Mr miglin's house for $200 cash he was obliged to provide two pieces of ID the only idea he had was his real name and the real address where he was staying at the Normandy Plaza which he gave yet again cunanan had taken a risk and got away with it the porn shop passed on the forms as required to the Miami Police where they lay on a desk unnoticed there was really nobody looking looking for him here nobody thought he was here he really was here out and about like a normal citizen uh minding his own business for for at least two months that we know Andrew kunanon lived and loitered in Miami until the middle of July now he was ready to claim the most famous victim of his notorious spree during cunanan's Heyday in San Diego he was often heard boasting about his time spent with famous fashion designer Giani Vace Andrew had always talked about celebrities that he rubbed elbows with and he couldn't wait to tell us about his chance encounter and meeting fashion designer Johnny verace we laughed and we said well good for you isn't that isn't that something another tall tale did he really meet him did they hang out in the limo and Club it all night maybe yes maybe no it could be seen perhaps that Canan targeted vasari because it was an argument it was an element of self-loathing against being homosexual and the gay community that he'd now turned against there was also the belief that Canan thought he had HIV and he wanted to take it out on a on a on a symbolism for the homosexual culture Versace would be an ideal Target that would bring everything together in waltimo a storm at 8:55 a.m. Andrew kunanon shot dead one of the world's most famous fashion designers at Point Blank [Music] Range kunanon was now the most wanted man in the world and a massive police hunt had begun the clues weren't hard to find William Reese's truck had been left in a nearby car park we discovered that the clothes that the witnesses had described was laying on the ground next to the truck and he went out the fire exit and got into a taxi cab and fled before we were able to secure that garage the impact of the Versace slaying continued to grow it was a big deal that this was not just some you know a random celebrity this was a this was going to be international news this was going to turn the city upside down and it did when I ran by that day I looked over to the east here and I just saw these news satellite dishes all over the place maybe uh I'd say dozens of I managed you know to kind of run by and see the blood on the steps was everybody talked about the blood on the steps and it stayed there for a long time played out in the spotlight of rolling news the global media soaked up the breaking story We quickly shut down the city before Andrew Canan was able to leave so we were fairly convinced that he was still in Miami Beach it was a huge Manhunt everything stopped in Miami everything was focused on this Manhunt and everybody descended upon South Beach international news and we uh basically uh stayed at the police station you know 24/7 it was just crazy I mean it it was became a media circus I mean the police were coming in asking questions um it was it was so much activity on Ocean Drive and the cameras and and the and the people and and there was still the fear the warmth of the Miami streets was replaced by Cold dread and panic well we didn't know what happened we don't know why it happened if it was random or the guy knew him there's a lot of un certainty you know people were worried about is there a killer on the street um you know if he was shot are they going to come shoot other people it it was it was scary we all had the news on then all of a sudden I hear that he's killed other gay people in different cities a lot of the gay people felt they were in danger from him that he'll kill others you know people were just like on edge the whole time by murdering one of the most famous people in the world kunam was now going to be headline news in every sense of the world as the world watched on could kunanon be caught before he killed again in 1997 a vicious spree killer had been terrorizing America on a 2,000m 3mon bloody Rampage Andrew kunanon had just claimed his fifth victim gunning down the world famous fashion designer Giani Vace on the steps of his South Beach mansion in broad daylight you couldn't pick somebody more important to a person like Andrew and yet had his own hand he saw his demise but 8 days after the murder the trail had gone cold putting his face out there was a difficult task I remember we came up with a photo lineup of about six different Andrew kunan and we put it out in a poster for the media to help assist us with locating him and that's how the leads came in it was just a a massive Manhunt and it was almost unfathomable that he could not find this guy yet he was such a chameleon and Blended in so well that there was more than one or two times that I thought I saw him uh was it him I don't know yeah I saw down and the beach was really kind of empty nobody around and this one guy was sitting on the rail and he was just sitting there staring at me for a good 15 minutes 20 minutes it was kind of eerie in a way so I opened my window and I said you have a freaking problem and he just looked at me and then he walked away and uh when I went home that night I uh looked on Channel 7 News and I looked and I saw and that's when I knew it was him his head was shaved so he didn't look like the picture in the paper so that's why I didn't recognize him Wednesday the 23rd of July 1997 Ocean Drive Miami time was running out for kunanon caretaker Fernando Carrera had stopped by to check on a vacant Indian Creek houseboat m 2 and a half miles from versace's mansion on Ocean [Music] Drive he had stumbled across an unwelcome house guest this was where Andrew kunanon had sought Refuge I don't think that there was any attempt from kunanon to move out of Florida he stayed hiding in a in a in a broken house boat that he'd found whilst the owner was away he was almost making his last stand but I don't think he had much faith that the police would catch up with him because he had a very low opinion of law enforcement they were clearly inferior to him and they'd not done a very good job of catching up with him so far as Carrera ran to alert the authorities a shot rang out when that call came in it was a shots fired call everybody just knew this had to be it the authorities respond incredibly quickly this time and are swarming all around the house booat within minutes of being alerted to it by the caretaker I was there on the island when they finally cornered him at the at the house booat and when I got there there was I don't know hundreds and hundreds of people there hundreds and hundreds of reporters police all around this house boat after a a standoff of a couple of hours during which there's no reaction from Anan they decide to lob uh tear gas into the into the vessel it was live media coverage you know 24/7 almost everyone was glued to the news it was crazy to watch we were watching that on TV kind of you know sitting in in the uh conference room watching that on TV as it unfolded cuz uh we didn't know how it was going to end at that time the nightmare ended caught on a thousand cameras in the full glare of the media Spotlight myself and an FBI agent were the first ones inside he hadn't shot at the caretaker he had killed himself kun's death he shot himself before the police could get to him and he shot himself wearing a pair of shorts in a double bed with a single gunshot to the right side of his head he was in control over how he would go nobody else was going to take his life or take his Liberty and he chose a very Hollywood glamorous almost Homer erotic way to die rain of terror brought Upon Us by Andrew kunan is over I'm exhausted I'm the adrenaline has been pumping for hours and uh I'm realizing that the story that we basically been living with is is [Music] over I think he was on a suicidal Rampage to begin with I think kunanon had intended from the beginning to kill himself but first he was going to get even with all those wealthy men and those concepts of wealthy men like Versace the kind of things Andrew wished for the kind of places that he put himself the kind of stories he told us they were stories of somebody else's life somebody that I guess we'll never know cunanan's death brought with it a mix of emotions for those who had been affected by his brutal spree we were not unhappy that kunanon committed suicide and that we did not have to go to trial and and listen to lies and and the other kinds of things Andrew kunan was a man that caused misery for many people everybody was pretty uh relieved that he wasn't on the loose anymore well I'm thankful that the taxpayers are not keeping him alive in prison Andrew kunanon had journeyed from being his father's precocious prodige to the class clown with a fabricated family background to the enigmatic life and soul of every party he attended and finally to one of the most brutal spree killers in American history Andrew kunanon had to be the center of attention in his school yearbook next to his picture he prophetically wrote a delu simply put after me the storm yet the question remained why did Andrew kunanon have murder in mind and what drove Mo him to his Killing Spree Andrew was over the top in every way he was over the top in his affect his personality and he was over the top when it came to killing well Andrew Canan was a a a unique spree killer he had created a false identity he had created a False Image in his mind and when that shattered he shattered and he kind of left pieces of himself as he went from murder to murder to murder he couldn't handle the fact that he'd once been the Glamorous doen of the gay party circuit and now he was alone putting on weight slowly losing his hair and possibly had HIV he was clearly very angry but he wasn't to blame and other people were going to pay the price by killing a well-known celebrity like Versace and then committing suicide uh kunan and was assured of having his place in infamy and that's exactly what he wanted in 2006 a campaign of murder was carried out on the streets of suffk something was happening you know every 24 hours the discovery of five bodies in 10 days would leave the community stunned and authorities overwhelmed this was a which was completely unprecedented as the clock ticked the body count Rose make me wonder you know how many more are they going to find and with it the question what had driven Steve Wright this quiet middle-aged man to commit his Killing Spree not in a million years you think he's ever capable of that why did this happen I mean that's the $65,000 [Music] question [Music] Sunday the 10th of December 2006 the Tranquil Market town of ipswitch was gearing up for the holiday season there was late night shopping and Christmas parties um and uh yeah very much the lead up to the the festive period however despite the festive cheer there was an undercurrent of unease in early November two girls had been reported missing from the streets of the red light district by the 8th of December both their bodies had been found dumped in a nearby Brook the disturbing discoveries separated by just 6 days senior investigating officer Roy Lambert would receive a phone call that would thrust him to the center of the newly unfolding drama Sunday the 10th of December I was at home about 4:00 when I got a phone call from Stuart go he said we've got a bit of a problem so I said what's happened now and he said we've had another another body has been found of a young woman on arriving at the location on the edge of the nearby Village of nacton he would encounter a haunting scene I remember when I arrived uh it was about just after 4:00 uh it was it was then dark it was really really windy and the rain was absolutely lashing it [Music] down although the scene of this Sinister crime gave no immediate Clues to the identity of the killer that of the victim was soon established quite early on we we could see from the scene some there were some tattoos which gave us an indication who this person may be uh it wasn't a formal identification this early on the Sunday evening but we sent some family layers and officers to the mother of uh this young woman who turned out to be Anna Le Alon when I looked at the video which had been taken by the the crime scene investigator of what uh the position know how the body was I was actually uh shocked to to to see the image of anal lying uh naked and and posed in in the middle of these uh these Woods the Killer's public display would give investigators an insight into the Disturbed mind of the man responsible for this sadistic spree she'd clearly been laid out by the offenders she was in a cruciform position so uh her arms were were out wide um and her hair had she had long peroxide blonde hair that had been pulled back in a conical form and um she was pristine she was very clean and she was naked um but clearly the offender had spent some time laying her out I was thinking what are we in the middle of here this is the third girl taken off the streets of ipswitch um uh found on land now in Woodland so we didn't know what was happening really the uncovering of a third body in only 8 days would prove unnerving it was almost a public display by the by the killer because her body was left so close to the road um it was clear that she'd be found pretty soon um it seemed at that time almost as if the killer was perhaps taunting the police things W me so quick it was actually difficult to sort of comprehend and get get a handle on what in fact was happening to us in suffk the genuine shock and fear in IP switch was ramped up 100 times pretty early on we found that anal was living in Colchester with a boyfriend initially we sort of said to him well why haven't you reported a missing and he did say well analie sometimes would go missing for two or three days at a time he wasn't concerned about it they the last time he saw her they were on good terms and in fact he said she said she was going to go and see her mother uh that afternoon and take some Christmas presents to her son and in fact uh when we relay that to her mother her mother did confirm [Music] that when we found out from Anna's boyfriend that uh we were going to that she was going to go to Harris to see her mother on the train obviously a lot of trains have CCTV these days and uh so we we looked and in fact we did obtain some footage of her actually on the train coming back back from harage towards Manning Tre on that Sunday night the 3rd of December it gave us our starting point from when she was last one of the times she was last seen alive uh also gave us a description of what she was wearing and what she was carrying uh which is important or asked that if we found any clothing uh subsequently and in fact we got her uh not only on the train we found further CCTV of her at the railway station and also later on the outskirts of the red light area later on on that Sunday the uh 3rd of December while the inquest into analie's death continued the results of the autopsy would provide police with a new piece of the puzzle the pathologist was able to give us a cause of death and uh he descri he described it as an interference with the airway um either fixation or strangulation news of the discovery of analie's body would travel fast we're all scared of our wits thinking who's it going to be next Who's it going to be next the media uh interest just went into the stratosphere suddenly resources right around the country were coming to it switch to really try and nail down who was doing this yet the killer was closer than anyone could have dared [Music] imagine in 2006 ipswitch will be struck by a killing spree in only 6 weeks five girls disappeared from the streets of the red light district their bodies found over just 10 [Music] days the 1st of October 2006 London Road Ipswich 48-year-old forklift truck driver Steve Wright moved into a flat in the heart of ipswich's red light [Music] area wri's younger brother Keith recalls a quiet life in their early years suppose my earliest memor I can sort of really remember he used to walk all to school and stuff I was probably only about five or six I think and Steve must be was he about 14 was always good I mean we was always quite close as a family that way they had obviously had arguments where between stepmom and stepchildren or whatever Steve Wright's natural mother had left the family home in 1965 I think his parents divorced when he was quite young um and he didn't see his his mother particularly was brought up by his father Conrad um who was in the services his father would have lived by strict rules and he would have expected his son to do so so if he ever stepped out of line then he would have been very quickly and strongly put back into line and so I think Steve's uh childhood was spent moving around in different parts of the country as his dad was uh dispatched to different um parts of the the UK to work what he did become quite Adept at was putting on a Persona an easygoing affable almost every man Persona so that people could get along with him easily that may not have necessarily been the real Steve brigh so his early years were ones where he clearly learned to talk the talk and those were skills that he used to lethal effect later on the exceptional story began in Earnest on the 1st of November 19-year-old Tanya nickel had disappeared without Trace Tanya was first reported missing I think it was the 1st of November 2006 uh when she's reported missing by her mom she caught the bus into town at just after 11:00 p.m. I think it was Monday evening um clearly with the intention of uh operating as a street prostitute Roy Lambert will be called upon to review the facts of the case Tanya would stand down here on this uh corner of this Junction uh and cars would uh would come around and and they would stop and speak to the girls uh and they would discuss Services uh the girls were getting the car and off they were going to do whatever they were going to do but um this was very uncharacteristic and uh Tanya's mom subsequently reported her as missing with detectives puzzled by The Disappearance concerns would grow for Tanya's safety and the alarm Bells began to ring at that early stage um and T literally disappeared off the face of the Earth just 2 weeks later on November the 15th concerns were raised for the safety of a second missing girl 25-year-old Gemma Adams She too had been last seen in the area surrounding London Road initially it was only one girl gone missing so there's nothing to really as a force to get too concerned about it was when the second one was reported missing the 14th or 15th of November we thought this is a bit usual gemer Adams was reported as missing to US during the early hours of uh that morning her boyfriend had taken her down into the uh red light area to to to do some work uh and he was anticipating seeing her after after a period of time and I think what happened was that she didn't come back you know the sort of girls who would just go away and not come back for days and it's like oh they've just gone on a bend that they doing whatever but you knew the girls who were sent principle had their Partners or whatever they wouldn't just that's not their normal routine to do that friends of Gemma were becoming worried for her safety I know Gemma was a really kind person she was a really nice person to talk to she weren't a person who would double cross you who would like be proper like nasty towards you or backstab you steal off you or anything like that she wasn't that sort person she was the opposite polite nice as the authorities gathered more evidence the their concern would grow also because of her lifestyle and the fact that uh uh she might have gone off with a client initially there was not great concern for that first couple of days but then when the phone went off completely off the network I mean that was the big indication that something uh serious might have happened to [Music] her the 2nd of December 2006 11:40 a.m. hintlesham the developing story would open a haunting new chapter the weather was exceptional for that time of the year everywhere was in flood I got into the lakes and because the floods had receded the first thing I done was well not the first thing I just check the grounds check the Lakes then got me waiters on and then patrolled the Brook and I suddenly noticed like a mannequin yeah a dresses m is dumy upon closer inspection Trevor would find himself horrified at the true nature of his Discovery there was not until I'd got into the brook and got up right beside her and just moved the hair a little bit moved the debris away from her hair then that is when I suddenly knew or realized that now it's a young body and me first thought was it's one of the missing girls well at first a shock and sort of maybe jump back a little bit and then I had to sort of take control of myself and got straight out of the brook still shaking and found the police up you know the know the exact time where I found them at 11:45 before when I found them I just found them up and said who I was where I was and that I've just found the body of a young girl faced down in a Brook Police would descend on the scene and begin their efforts to determine the identity of the unfortunate victim when the report first came in uh because of the the body had been in the water that long we didn't initially know who this was uh not until uh we taken the body out of of the water and got them back to the hospital and started to conduct our our examinations did we identify who who it was the body was that of Gemma Adams who had last been seen some two weeks earlier on the 15th of November friends had long suspected the worst GMA when she first went when I first knew that it had been a murder because she'd have never just gone off that weren't her style she wouldn't have just left and her boyfriend followed her about every night so if you saw her boyfriend you knew she was out because he'd be a couple of steps behind her and for her not to come back that weren no way that wouldn't happen I'll never forget it I she'll never forget that day I should never forget the timings of that day I shall never forget the night when they um it's something that's never going to go why with detectives now on the trail of a killer they began looking closely at the emerging pattern people say if you find out about the victim you might find out uh how they've died the clues and list of likely suspects however were few and far between when you get into this area of the sex industry dealing with uh men who travel from a long way away there's also some really interesting individuals they were starting to look at clients friends and victimology of of of Gemma to find out you know how she lived who she associated with there was no indications at this stage of who was responsible for her death since moving to London Road only a matter of months before Steve Wright was already known as a regular client of the girls who work the streets surrounding his home his history of indulging in the world of the sex industry was long established Steve Wright wasn't somebody who just suddenly woke up one morning and wanted to explore the sex trade uh or go to a massage parlor to see what it was like this was a man who'd been dipping his toe in and out of that life his whole life we saw the first uh example of that when he was traveling around the world uh working on the QE2 to places that opened his eyes to these sorts of things Wright would join the crew of the famous Cruise liner in 1980 working as a steward and traveling the world when he was on this sort of QE2 he was thought it must be quite a smart old job it tell us all the things that the traveling they got up to and obviously a lot of hard work on place like that in that kind of job one's got to be affable and one defers to the customer he'd do anything for everybody he' always help anyone out if you wanted anything he'd try and help you out with it I'm very confident that he would have learned how to be a lady's man he would have learned how to be sociable he would have learned how to make people feel a tease and relaxed about him I met Steven Wright probably in the summer of ' 81 he was had this sort of grin like a like he was laughing inside um and I was always a little bit uneasy around him he kind of fancied himself to a degree he was a bit of a sort of ladies man I don't think he dated any any on board women because there was you know very few ladies on there anyway so um whatever female company he wanted he made use of it when we was uh on the shore a lot of the ports of C that we used to go to uh were all in the less salubrious parts of the Town sort of thing so the ladies that he met were ladies who wanted their payment as it were ladies of the night kind of the strains of a life at Sea would eventually take their toll on right having divorced his wife he would return to England in [Music] 1987 some 19 years later as the news of the Grim discovery of Gemma Adam's Body broke the story began to gather momentum initially when the two girls were missing the the interest locally certainly with the media was mixed they were two girls uh from the the sex industry got missing but of course when one was found murdered now uh the interest with the media particularly was H local crime reporter Josh wari would be assigned to cover the case it was a Saturday morning and police got in touch to say that a body had been found any murder is headline news in the uh in the local press um and so for two girls to be missing one of whom had been found by that stage was uh was really frightening and really shocking however few could have prepared themselves for the next turn in this Twisted Tail we then started to search the beled brook we used a police dive team to do this and on the 8th of December the police dive team had worked their way from hintlesham towards cop do which is down Downstream towards the river Orwell and unfortunately came across uh the body of another uh white naked female and this later turned out to be [Music] Tanya Tanya had been missing for nearly 6 weeks the discovery of her body leading detectives to believe that they were now looking for one man on a killing spree so we Now quickly move from what was to missing vble young women to a double murder inquiry I heard about it as soon as she'd been B because the police had their incident Vans and the rest of it at our place at the fisheries and when I got down the next morning they' all disappeared and that's when I found out that they had found Tanya a few miles Downstream just six days on from the discovery of Jimma Adams the revelation of a second body being found would make waves across the country got a phone call from the news desk my news editor said look you know this doesn't look good don't pack for a night you know I would pack for the best part of a week we don't know where this is going so I arrived up in uh cop do to the uh scene of where this second body uh had been found Tanya nickel it was pouring with rain through the sort of of windshield of the uh car you could see in the distance the uh police car lights the blues and twos flashing the road was blocked off and suddenly what had once felt like perhaps a very short trip for an isolated very tragic death of a young woman now took on a slightly more Sinister angle [Music] as Christmas approached in 2006 ipswitch would be plagued by a killer on a ruthless spree beginning with The Disappearance of 19-year-old Tanya Nickel in early November by the 8th of December Tanya's body and that of Gemma Adams had been found in a brook on the outskirts of ipswitch while the town came to terms with the grave situation an ominous atmosphere began to envelop the area a little bit of an started to creep in like not wanting to walk out on your own over night time once it got dark and making sure your children were okay and escorting them everywhere it was a culture of fear in many respects um there were more police on the streets handing out rape alarms to women Friends of the street girls noticed the increased police presence was not welcomed to be honest a lot of the girls was pissed off about it because you couldn't get the money so with the police being there they couldn't go and get what they needed to get anyway so yeah you felt a bit safe but at the same time they're all shouting at them because they want them to go away because they want do you know I mean they want people to be driving around so because otherwise you're not going to you're going out there for nothing really then on the 10th of December just 2 days on on from finding the body of Tanya nickel a third horrifying Discovery was made when I got a call from the force control room to say that a motorist had driven through the street at nacton and this motorist reported finding what appeared to be the naked body of a of a female my mind was racing when I got this call cuz you're immediately thinking you know who is it um and as we now know that was the body of Annalie aleron found laid out and posed in a cruciform position the disturbing ritual demonstrated that the killer was becoming ever Bolder unlike Tania and Gemma before her 24-year-old Ana had not been reported missing making the revelation of her untimely end all the more shocking I got a phone call um from the news desk and and they said something on the lines of you know you're you're not going to believe it um but the police have just announced that they've found the body of a third woman suddenly attention raised several notches Are We Now talking about a serial killer are we talking about somebody picking off young women right from under the police's noses living in the heart of the area from where the girls were disappearing in Steve Wright had a history of violent Behavior towards women he had a track record for being uh brutal for being violent um against his two previous wives we've got an individual who would would would batter his partners and we know that that's usually a Hallmark symptom of men who feel inadequate who feel they can't cope who feel they're not in control of the relationship and they don't feel uh terribly manly that they they lack something in their machismo Steve wght was all about trying to be something he wasn't uh trying to live out or find excitement in his life and it was pretty tough it's tough for a lot of people to to find excitement um he found it in in prostitution he also found it in gambling it meant that he built up debts by the year 2000 Steve Wright's life was in steady decline with drinking and gambling taking their toll Wright had acred £40,000 of debt yet he continued his habit of paying for sex graduating from the massage pars he would formerly frequent Wright began to take his fantasies out into the open money gets tight you have UH responsibilities bills to pay suddenly it makes more sense to be out on the streets where you can turn a trick for 20 quid uh rather than 50 60 70 in a massage parlor and so that's how we find eventually Steve Wright coming out onto the streets rather than doing what he did to get his kicks behind closed doors later that same year Wright would hit the bottom of his spiraling depression he tried to top himself at one time just for everything got to him and uh then he sort of came back like they have done when they ever get in trouble and normally come back home to see your dad and that and he came back here Dad sort of set him up this was a man either crying out hoping he'd get caught uh or being an attention seeker on the one hand uh or this was a man who genuinely felt that his life was that tragic that he just needed to be here no longer after working in a succession of smalltime jobs Wright eventually took employment at the Felix Stow docks when he C come back here he just went more and more silent about things and he wouldn't sort of chat about nothing really he went more into himself and quiet and non-confrontational to anybody dad set him up at his then he got the job down on the docks everything was going well sort of what that's him sort of sell for now he was now involved in another long-term is relationship and she has a normal job where the evenings are spent together but then there's a change in job suddenly his partner is now working night shifts so Steve Wright finds himself sitting in London Road in the middle of the red light district with an opportunity to fulfill his fantasies while Wright struggled with his personal life the pace of the unfolding story playing out on the streets of suffk continued to accelerate by this stage three women have been found in the space of little over a week that that speed at which things were developing um just meant there was shock upon shock upon shock the 12th of December 2006 levington 6 weeks on from The Disappearance of Tanya nickel the first girl to go missing just 24 hours after uncovering the body of third victim analie aleron detectives would be struck by a sickening double Discovery I became aware that another sex worker called Paula cenel had been reported missing by her boyfriend he was concerned because he'd naturally heard what's on the radio and seen what was on the television and then what happened again there was another sex worker reported missing Anette Nicholls was reported missing by her mother she'd been trying to get hold of Anette by her phone no reply so she became very very concerned about why she couldn't get all of her net so she reported a missing I can remember going to the police headquarters after anley alon's body had been found and identified and it was a press conference we were handed a press release uh which we weren't expecting telling us that there were two more women who've been reported missing um and I can just remember phoning the news desk and saying this is not just about the third girl who whose body's been found there are two more missing what is going on here what are we involved with this is like a a whirlwind of all these incidents keep happening I mean something was happening sort of you know every 24 hours close friend Sarah grimwood had been one of the last people to see Paula before she disappeared me and another friend and Paula and at the time my boyfriend we were all in the house together I thought she was staying in I didn't think she was going to go out and then I said to her are you going to stay in tonight now she did say yeah but then when her stuff was gone she changed her mind and then the next day she didn't come around mine and knock on the door like she does every day eager to locate the newly missing girls the police would appeal for information I would ask either the girls themselves or anyone with information as to their whereabout and I can remember appealing certainly throughout that Monday for anybody that knew of the whereabouts of Anette or Paula to make contact with us they quickly ascertain that certainly uh as it turned out both Paula and Anette I think they both been last seen alive about the 8th of December so we're now the 12th of December so there's four sort of days there which uh this window we got to sort of try and close down and probably naively I thought that they'd make contact with us or somebody would their appeals however would prove [Music] futile the 12th of December a member of the the public is's walking along the old A14 at levington which isn't far from naon and uh he sees in the foliage about seven or eight yards in from the road what he believes is the body of a white naked female we've got a force helicopter and in Major Crimes like this it's a it's good practice they asked the helicopter to have a fly over the scene and have a look around so they went the helicopter was put up we quickly able to see a video down link on screen and I can remember seeing the crumpled body of a of a naked female um and as it turned out that was the body of Paula clenon the helicopter goes up and sees where the member of the public is and sees that first body and then they naturally they they then start to slowly work their way out from there and what happened then is unbelievable I will need you at some point to go all right and I could remember turning away from the screen and speaking to the inspector um and then turning back to the screen and a second image caught my eye and I could see that it was the image of a naked female but it was in a different form to that of Paula and um this female was in a Cru form position much like anae had been found and it takes a few seconds for the brain to catch up with what the eye is seeing um and of course it quickly Dawns on me that this is a second body and as we now know that was the body of an Nick Nichols I mean I've never known anything like this in over 40 years of been in the in in the police [Music] so Paula was that in fact the first one to be found on the the 12th on Tuesday the 12th and this was the one that uh the member of the public found and Paul was found just seven or eight yards in I didn't cry first because I didn't I didn't believe it do you know what I mean I didn't you didn't believe it first because you're so scared yourself you don't want to believe it you know what I mean because that's a big thing that's a big part of my life which that's really hard really do you know I mean it's to think about that's where uh the tributes are to where a net now a net was found not obviously right by the side of the road but uh about 10 yards in detectives were faced with the reality of chasing down an increasingly Reckless killer one believed to be responsible for the murder of five young women it was almost seemed audacious you know it was almost a killer mocking the police in a way and saying I can get away with this right under your noses were the offender offenders were they enjoying this or were they being panicked into uh some sort of activity was it all com into a crescendo whoever this was he was losing control pressure on the police was enormous we just didn't know what was going to happen next with the stakes of this Savage spree escalating ever higher the Killer's deadly designs would be undone by his previous sins the only way they were able to track him down was through DNA evidence of a crime that he committed you know dozens of years [Music] prior in December 2006 an elusive killer stalked the streets of ipswich's red light district preying on the girls who pled their trade disappearing over 4 weeks the bodies of five vulnerable young women had been found in only 10 days with detectives under increasing pressure to close their net around this violent Predator DNA evidence would prove the key that would crack the murderous code we' managed to obtain some DNA from the anal scene and when the forensic scientists had processed this through and looked on the national DNA database this same DNA uh profile came up as being Steven right he'd been dealt with for theft whilst employed as a ban at a hotel in Felix to in 2001 I think it was so here we are five years later and uh all the indications are that he's a Serial murderer that DNA sample was his big downfall had he never taken that money had he never got into debt uh then the police quite possibly would never ever have found him with Steve Wright now now firmly in the police's sights they would move to get their man with regard to the arrest of Steve W uh he was arrested in the early hours of the 19th of December it was about about 5:00 a.m. he was arrested at his home address he was up he was getting uh prepared to go to work so he was arrested and taken into custody it was interesting his reaction he uh he didn't he didn't say much at all uh was was quite shocked and in fact he needed to be given some time to recover the prime suspect would maintain a steadfast silence in the face of questioning he certainly never said uh you've got it all wrong I'm innocent he was uh he didn't hardly say anything at all he was taken to a police station in suffk he was interviewed with it with a solicor by trained officers uh but he made no comment all the way through we've got the last skel to go missing with your DNA and the one before with your DNA both on their naked bodies how can that be no comment here was a guy who had been arrested on suspicion of five murders uh who was refusing to comment which didn't fit with the uh the kind of profile of an innocent man wrongly arrested as news spread of the arrest Steve Wright's family would be astounded by the accus ations well I was totally shocked to be honest I mean I was at work the night before we were all talking about it and to wake up sort of that morning to find out that your brother had been sort of Arrested I suppose unbelievable is the only way you can think that from just having a run-of the mill normal sort of family setup as such to now know that one of your family was suspected of this serial killings with people are going remember for years as the face of the so-called suffk Strangler made the front pages people were surprised by the vision of a man who appeared to be the very image of ordinary pictures began to emerge and he didn't look like perhaps the the killer that we'd imagined he would look like a middle-aged Man Slightly overweight um slightly boarding fairly regular looking guy one of the reasons why right was able to operate efficiently in the way he did is that he didn't look act or seem to be a Serial murderer he had a job he had a partner he had a domestic life that ordinariness is what allows him to literally get right up close and next to the girl and persuade them to get into the car it's the banality of evil the police would begin to gather evidence and build a case against the man they believed responsible for the slayings of five young women and of course you know for the police the arrest was almost the easy bit it was the work that would come after that that was the um the real challenge for them you know to prove that they had got the right man beyond all Reasonable Doubt there was no smoking gun I think the prosecution admitted that but uh there was a real picture that was painted by the prosecution there was DNA evidence there was fiber evidence uh taken from his car I he had a a a dark blue Ford Mondo ztech which we took possession of and conducted forensic examination of that this vehicle did in fact become relevant was seen on CCTV in different parts of the red light area during sort of November December 2006 he was confident enough and believed he was clever enough that some risks such as using his own car were acceptable risks but it was CCTV that got him I mean that is that is era 101 in your serial murderer handbook is CCTV so when you put all this together we had all this evidence which linked all the girls and Steve Wright and it like Clos the circle the trial would be keenly awaited yet Wright would offer little defense in answer to the prosecutors probing questions I remember really clearly in the trial when Wright took to the stand to give evidence under cross-examination there were dozens of questions uh the evidence was put to him you know is this just a coincidence all his answer was it appears so yes he said it 20 or 30 times and it just continued to kind of paint this image of somebody who was who was guilty after more than 5 weeks of trial the jury would deliver a unanimous verdict finding Steve Wright guilty of the murders of Tanya nickel Gemma Adams analie aleron Paula clel and Annette Nichols he would receive receive a sentence of life imprisonment with a recommendation that he spend the rest of his days behind bars when the five guilty verdicts came back there was there was clearly a huge relief on the part of the police definitely the members of the public um but I think probably most of all family members were just so relieved that uh that Justice had been done although the man responsible had been sentenced questions about the motivations of this most complex of characters remained the five murders that Wright was convicted of were all committed in his late 40s which is statistically speaking a very late age for a serial killer there is a possibility that he could have a very long offending history going back many years I think my God you know I I I drank with this guy went on a shorely with him and now he's a a serial killer you know just killed five women within four weeks you know you don't just do that you know I mean then your mind goes back and races back do you think was it possible that he he started when he was on the ships uh and then you think well my feelings I had towards him with the uneasiness was he was he doing it there and then it could be that that living out these sexual fantasies he'd held for a long time could be the the one last role of the dice he might have of of achieving something of doing something interesting that most men couldn't possibly imagine doing despite his conviction the mystery of why Steve Wright chose to take the lives of five innocent women in just 6 weeks remains a riddle only he can answer because he's never made any comment we don't actually still know to this day how this all happened how did he get control of these girls how did he manage to isolate them and murder them and and get away with it until he decides to tell his son side of the story and tell us what happened I don't think we're ever going to [Music] know in 2011 22-year-old Jared lner would embark on a Swift and brutal rampage that would make world headlines congresswoman Gabrielle gford was among those shot men all of a sudden I heard a bang women there was multiple people shot and children oh my God would die at his hand as the seconds ticked the body count Rose it was just an eerie scene of people dead taking their last breaths and with it the question what had driven this youth from the Arizona suburbs to commit his deadly Killing Spree this is my genocide scho [Music] [Music] January 2011 Tucson Arizona a thriving City set amidst an arid landscape in the southwestern corner of the United States in a downtown shopping M recently reelected Senator Gabrielle gords was about to begin a session of Congress on your corner an opportunity for a meet and greet with the local residents Gabby is my congresswoman and um she liked to make herself available to her constituents people didn't have to come to her office she would announce where she was going to be and invite people to come and talk with her many had been looking forward to the morning and with an air of anticipation a crowd gathered for the 10 a.m. start it was a beautiful crisp clear bright blue sky Saturday morning and we went out to uh the Safeway just to pick up a couple of small items I pulled into the parking lot and I could see the big sign up there that said Gabby gords everybody seemed to be pleasant enjoying talking to each other I was enjoying EAS dropping Spirits were high but unknown to those gathered a danger lurked amongst them there were 12 chairs sitting in front with 12 people mostly couples sitting in those chairs so I walked to the end of the 12 chairs but just moments in and the lives of those waiting in line were suddenly torn apart within seconds of us walking into the store that the pops started I was standing there talking to this couple and all of a sudden I heard a bang and then a series of Po bang bang bang just like that people started running into to the Safeway bloodied screaming they've shot the congresswoman they've shot the congresswoman I could see the shadow of the gunman walking down the sidewalk and at Point Blank rain he was shooting everybody in the head pop pop pop pop pop pop and when I dropped to the sidewalk I felt the bullet gets the back of my head 911 where here 91 was shooting at Gabriel was was somebody shot her yes the guy like guy had a semi-automatic pistol he went in he started firing was is anybody injured did you say Gabrielle Gord was hit uming okay and there's other people that are injured there's multiple people shot okay oh my God 584 the call came out and we heard the audible tones saying that there was a serious incident that was going on and what I was told next was there was a shooting at the Safeway car is reporting shooting out with a semi-automatic weapon he shot at people and he was last seing headed towards the Walgreen he ran Northbound out of the store wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans and uh we have a caller who believes that Gabrielle Gard was shot that's a multiple victims there was lights and Sirens the entire way in just 17 seconds the shopping mouth had been transformed into a scene of bloody Carnage I couldn't accept even then even as I'm walking out that there was actually somebody out there shooting in the immediate aftermath the ruthless spree became a global news story we continue our team coverage on the mass shooting at a North Side Safeway congresswoman Gabrielle gford was among those shot the gunman had injured 13 people and brutally murdered six oh my god there are dead people outside that door right in your grocery store and the world waited to hear who was responsible for the unprecedented and ferocious Rampage we will have some more inform information on the person in custody connected to these shootings the Associated Press has identified the person the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Jared lofer but what have driven the young man from a peaceful Tucson suburb to turn his gun on his fellow residents and commit such a frenzied killing [Music] spree 10:10 a.m. Saturday the 8th of January 2011 Tucson Arizona has just been rocked by the actions of one young man 22-year-old Jared Lee Laughner all of a sudden I heard a bang they've shot the congresswoman they've shot the congresswoman in a killing spree lasting just 17 seconds lner had managed to end the lives of six people and wounded 13 more including the critical shooting of Gabriel L gords the congresswoman appear to have been his main [Music] target known to be one of the oldest cities in the United States Tucson Arizona is located just 60 mi from the Mexico border the culture is very influenced by the Mexican population so we have a lot of uh the Hispanic culture here you'll have a lot of great Mexican food um you'll see a lot of the Spanish dancing and in the music it's beautiful it's sunny people have no idea when they hear about Tucson Arizona and think that it's just a big desert Wasteland and they come here and see the beautiful mountains and our fabulous weather despite its recent growth the city is still renowned as a friendly welcoming place and we have a very small town fi even though there's probably about 800,000 people that live in the community definitely just a nice chill place um great place to raise a family you know I love that growing up just because I you felt safe one young resident's early years in Tucson began no differently to anyone else born on the 10th of September 1988 Jared Lee Laughner was raised and only child in a workingclass area of the city his mother was a respected and well-liked manager for the Parks and Recreation Department of Pima County and his father stayed at home restoring cars for money growing up in Tucson it's nice just because it's uh it's very quiet you you get to the suburbs and it's just a nice calm place um people they're still friendly though there's always something to do there's never a boring time during his his early years lner enjoyed a close-knit circle of friends I met Jared uh through mutual friend we were Middle School about like 12 13 at the time and uh the common Bond we had was music you know at that time I justess learned how to play the guitar so I was like I need to start a band I need to go do something and um mutual friend was like hey yeah Jared he plays bass like go go talk to Jared the the first time I met Jared um I believe it was at a party and um cuz we kind of all had the same friends although he demonstrated a rebellious streak in his early teenage years lner was far from a concern to either his parents or those around him I think we were with Jared um we were in my neighborhood and we're going up and down the streets and we're we're getting out and smashing all the mailboxes on the street pretty much just get into a lot of trouble drink go you know wreak havoc on neighborhood hoods kind of stuffff like that despite some episodes of delinquency his friends didn't consider him unusual amongst his peers he was on the same page as everyone else you know his conversations everything he was doing seemed absolutely normal but as Jared lner reached his late teens the friendly relaxed musician that everyone liked began to change for the worse it seems that a big big turning point in his life was he had a crush on a classmate in high school according to the gal he had a much much bigger crush on her than she ever had on him so she just gave him the door you know they broke up and according to his uh High School male peers that was when the guy just really kind of began to lose it I think he just really wanted to have friends and a girlfriend and stuff like that and I think that that never worked out for him so I think he felt kind of alone he started uh acting out in a way that in retrospect looks like the early uh part of an onset of mental illness he withdrew from school he withdrew from friends as an increasingly isolated teenager lner eventually dropped out of high school in 2006 his slow Retreat into a private world went relatively unnoticed but 5 years later he would grab the nation's attention with a [Music] Vengeance 29 minutes past midnight the 8th of January 2011 Motel 6 Tucson 10 hours before embarking on his Killing Spree Jared lner checked in to room 411 throughout the night lner carried out a series of movements that saw him putting into place the final preparations for an assassination attempt on congresswoman Gabrielle gords before the Spree lofa was clearly very busy he was no doubt suffering from what we would often call future for shortening he wasn't looking much beyond the next 24 hours in fact he may not have believed he would survive the next 24 hours as the night progressed lner made several short trips to a local convenience store at 1:00 a.m. he picked up a role of newly developed film containing photos he'd taken of himself only hours earlier there were several pictures of of Jared Laughner uh one of him in female underwear it was kind of odd and there was photograph of a 9mm gun on top of a uh a US textbook lner made the final return to his room at 4:12 a.m. with his newly developed photographs he logged on and entered into his familiar subversive world within the internet and began posting the bizarre images online he spent into we hours on the computer uh sending emails out and uh you know goodbye my dear friends you know stuff like that retreating into the online world was nothing new in recent months lner had been pushing away friends and family in the real world in favor of a community online where he hoped his increasingly irrational views would find a home a lot of his Myspace records showed that he was into revolutionary literature such as Fahrenheit 3 351 as well as mine Camp though he he was well read in a in a typical standard teenage way one particular site was a Gathering Place for conspiracy theorists and Skeptics and here lner hoped his odd views would find recognition he would often post long rambling comments often about currency about the constitution of America how high schools were an illegal act and how gold and silver were the only true currency to believe in lner's view began falling on deaf ears some onliners even going so far as to suggest he seek psychological help a lot of his fellow students and professors became really spooked very freaked out by the guy's very very bizarre behavior he seemed kind of irrational very irritated almost demanding certain things just just not calm anymore almost you know just the total opposite he was Chang in big time he had a very very bizarre temper and I think he was starting to do drugs with uh the guys who's hanging out with at that time he didn't really seem you know always to be like happy gol lucky or anything he seemed like he kind of had like a a dark side to him or maybe a [Music] sadness while he was at IMA Community College there were a couple of instances where issues is um is difficult to talk about his abortion or War would come up and at the most unideal times he would blurt out in laughter one of his pmo classmates was talking about her very very uh traumatic experience uh having an abortion and Lana came up with this uh remark like oh my God you're a baby killer and of course people in the classroom would would take exception of that and then would ask him what his problem was what are you doing are you trying to make a mockery of what we're saying and he would just always respond in kind by laughing and just saying you're all idiots you're all illiterate you don't know anything that's going on here s the students were very very spooked by his behavior in fact uh one of the girls who was in her 50s and she had been a mental health technician she took a seat by the door and she emailed one of her friends saying you know I I just have a strong guts feeling that someday this guy's going to come into class with a gun and start shooting that I just want to know I'll be the first one out the door we're examining the torture of students the final straw for college authorities came when lner posted a disturbing video online this is my genocide school where I'm going to be homeless because of the school the Puma Community College Police discovered a video he had made he took a a handheld camera and he walked around the campus of fima Community College and he basically talked about it being the biggest waste of money in American Education this is Pima Community College one of the biggest scams in America we're like this is from Jared like what like this this is creepy it's just it did not seem like anything it didn't seem like any of his interests that he was previously aligned with here's the best part the bookstore the bookstore the bookstore the bookstore it is so illegal to sell this book under the Constitution we are also centered by our freedom of speech it was a rambling psychotic video that uh set off alarm bells in the pum Community College uh police department if the student is unable to locate the external universe and the student is unable to locate the internal Universe where is all my subjects I could say something sound right now but I don't feel like it finally the authorities at Pima College had a meeting with uh ler and his parents and said you know enough is enough uh we're kicking you out of college they gave him a letter they said um that he was suspended from school and that he could not come back until he had a mental health evaluation and and a an okay from a mental health professional a psychologist or a psychiatrist he was never able to produce that letter of course thank you this is Jared from P College 7:04 a.m. the 8th of January 20 just 3 hours before lner embarked on his Killing Spree he again left his motel room and made yet another trip to a store this time he tried to buy ammunition for a recently purchased handgun he had attempted to purchase 9mm ammunition however his behavior was so erratic that the sales clerk denied him um actually told him I I'll go check the back to see if I can find any extra ammunition the clerk was hey something something wrong with this guy came back and lied to to Jared lner telling him he had no ammunition to sell the gun lner was trying to buy ammunition for was a high-capacity semi-automatic legally purchased by himself only a few weeks earlier he also developed uh an interest in Firearms which isn't that unusual but did concern some of his friends when uh he showed up with a gun here or there some friends had some concerns about him owning a gun at 7:31 a.m. and deterred lner again attempted to purchase ammunition from a different store this time failing to raise any suspicions he succeeded in buying eight boxes containing a total of 400 rounds he already had uh his Weaponry he had the uh Glock uh semi-automatic and which several several magazines which nobody needs you know unless you're in military combat with only hours to go before the arrival of his main target congresswoman Gabrielle gords lner was on the move once again this time he was making his way home as lner approached the front door of his house he was confronted by his father his father said what the hell are you doing here with this uh big uh bag there where you going in recent months the relationship between lner and his parents had become increasingly strained his parents had actually disabled his vehicle and at one point taken away his shotgun uh just because they feared that Jared might be doing something or might consider doing something uh that wouldn't be safe for him or or or anyone else both Randy and Amy Laughner were clearly concerned about their son's behavior um they tried to talk to him and they just couldn't make any Headway but that too speaks volumes it speaks to his parents being concerned just about Jared's state of mind they had no idea what he was about to Embark upon but they knew that their son was uh was battling something and he was he was certainly confused to say the very least outside the front of the home a standoff between Father and Son continued but his dad was evidently very smoo to the point where he prohibited him to go back and use the car grabbing a black bag from the boot of the car lner turned and fled from his home the guy rans so blocks away calls for cab on his cell so a cab comes down to pick him up in just a matter of minutes lner would embark on a killing spree that would shock the nation to its core [Music] at around 1010 a.m. on Saturday the 8th of January 2011 one of America's oldest cities was devastated by a brutal Killing Spree carried out by 22-year-old Jared Lee lner just 1 hour earlier Tucson Arizona and the sundrenched morning appeared to be as any other for the local [Music] residents it was a beautiful Saturday morning early January it's a time time of year that people who live in Southern Arizona cherish because it's usually 70° or so it's sunny uh it's a beautiful day to be outside it was an absolutely normal day for me it was a relaxed Saturday I didn't have to work I was going to do some grocery shopping go visit my mother Sunny warm uh just a glorious day and my husband and I went out on a walk I had woken up fairly early that day was just you know cleaning doing various things and I had gone to the gym January 8th uh was a day off for me it was a Saturday and I was at home with my family and enjoying the time that I had to be with my wife and my daughters for these residents their lives were about to become unintentionally entwined with the arrival of Senator Gabrielle gords what was supposed to be happening at the Safeway that day was what's called a congress on your corner and it's a program that uh congresswoman gords had installed in which she would meet on occasion with her constituents there were telephone calls made out to the constituents uh the previous day informing them of the of the event and it was just an opportunity for her to interact with with the people of Tucson and get a feel for what uh some of the items or some of the political issues they had on their mind I got a robo call from Gabby gords saying that she was going to have a congress on your corner event Saturday January 8th and I want to thank her for her hard work that she does for us unbeknownst to Gabrielle gords and her team what was supposed to be a very lowkey relaxed Gathering had in fact a very real and present threat attached Jared Lee LOF had a burning hatred for the congresswoman that could be traced back to an incident years previously lner had actually met Gabrielle gords at a rally similar to the one where he committed his spree he had actually been to a prior talk that our congresswoman gave and uh he raised his hand he had a question and he basically asked quote what is government if words don't have meaning Congressman gords obviously didn't really know how to answer that question because it's it's sort of without any context how would you answer that this was something he used to always say words have no meaning and she was kind of like you know not imp plus by that said well thank you and let's move on to the next question he took that slate very personally and it's something that grew in him uh over the months and years that followed and it it became not only a curious osity uh but it became a very directed hatred toward Congressman Gabby gords a later exchange would compound the hatred he felt towards her he also wrote to her office and her office wrote back to him but they made the mistake of addressing the letter to a Mr lne rather than lner and this angered him and proved that he was clearly intellectually superior to the people who were in power so he had no respon for politicians State teachers or authority this kind of Killing Spree is not political it comes out of Psychopathology not politics and Jared lofer would have opened fire under these circumstances even if he had never met Congressman GFS at 9:54 a.m. lner arrived by taxi outside the Safeway store lots of small behavioral Clues from lner's behavior before the Spree show that he was completely lucid and coherent he took a taxi to the supermarket where gords was speaking he had the money on him to pay he gave a bill to the taxi driver and insisted on the change so he clearly knew what he was doing and where he was just yards away lner's intended target was about to greet those who had been queuing to meet her when I went down there that day I pulled into the parking lot and I could see the big sign up there that said Gabby gford and so I parked the car and walked up there now there was probably 25 people in line there was a number of elderly women and men appeared to be Coupes some not there was a woman just slightly older than me with a little girl with her and when I got about six fig from Gabby one of her AIDS Gabe zberman who I'd never met before came out and talked to me and told me I'd have to get to the end of the line and sign in Gabrielle gords is there just about ready to start her Congress on the corner and I turned to my husband I said you know you're lucky that I'm not more political or I would make you stop right now while I shake her hand and he's like come on let's get inside and get get the Brussels sprouts and the milk and get out of here before it gets too crowded so we are walking in the shooter is walking out at the exact same time at 10:10 a.m. lner's Killing Spree began all of a sudden this uh craz guy comes charging barging his way through this line wayway up to the front takes out this uh pistol and bang he opened fire shooting Gabrielle gord's directly in the head Gabe Zimmerman who was one of uh Gabriel gord's leading AIDS he immediately ran up to her Aid and he took a bullet in his head which immediately killed him within seconds of us walking into the store that the pop started I knew immediately it was a gun I was standing there talking to this couple and all of a sudden I heard a bang I had no idea what that was i' never heard a gun fire before and it wasn't until people started running into the Safeway screaming they've shot the congresswoman they shot the congresswoman that my brain woke up and went oh my my gosh I saw him just as a figure walking as a as a shadow turning to his left facing the queuing line of now shocked attendees he rapidly opened fire again he pulled the gun up and he aimed it right at my head and then he brought this hand up to grab the gun if I ran to the North or ran to the West I might make myself a Target so I I laid down on the sidewalk hoping that he would not notice me when he brought this hand up to grab the gun I dropped to the sidewalk and when I dropped to the sidewalk I felt the bullet hit the back of my head and I went right on down and laid on the sidewalk as the frenzied attack continued lner turned his gun on the then District director Ron Barber another attendee Judge John roll leapt in between the the two in a moment of sheer bravery uh John Ro pushed him under the table jumped on top of him and took a fatal fatal wound in the back I walked out and the first body that I came to was Judge John R I couldn't tell where he was shot and I kept asking there were a few people crawling around where is he shot where is he shot I just started doing CPR it was feudal I I mean he was just gone he saved Ron Barber's life but uh lost his after emptying his first magazine lner attempted to reload his gun to continue his spree in the seconds that followed a bystander seized the opportunity and picked up the nearest chair hitting lner across the back and when this person tried to hit him with the folding chair his left arm flew out and that gave me a chance to grab his wrist and I grabbed his left wrist just like this and stuck my foot in front of his feet and hit him just as hard as I could with my right hand during the struggle that followed lner fell to the ground I hear get the gun get the magazine and I knelt up and as I knelt up I'm right at the small of the back of the shooter I took my hand and I grabbed that I had his left wrist with and I slid it right up to his throat like that lner again attempted to grab another fully loaded magazine out of his back pocket and in his haste he dropped the magazine and I was able to grab it before he could pick it up and I told him if he moved i' choke him and he went to roll little and I choked him and he went ow ow ow ow ow In the Heat of the Moment with lofa subdued one of the victims grabbed his gun another man actually took lner's gun and pointed it at him and uh threatened to shoot him and Bill Badger said Put the gun down and step on it right now put it on the ground and step on it and and so he did with lner unable to escape police raced to the scene requesting additional units shall I ask the other frequencies there are multiple victims we a lot more units here and fire is sending uh everything that has as I was heading there the dispatchers were giving us more information when the initial call came out and I heard those audible tones there were the only information I was given was that there was a shooting and as I was responding was when the updated information was given customers have tackled the suspect they are holding him down at the Safeway with the gunman restrained he was soon in police custody and news of his identity began to filter out one of my close girlfriends she calls me and you know answer at this time and I'm like where are you what's going on she's like I'm at Safeway and I'm like okay you know are you all right she's like I don't know what happened she's like but it was weird she's like I saw this young kid and he looked familiar and he had a gun just point blank shooting people I remember getting out of the gym in my phone I had like 20 Miss calls all these different you know text messages have you heard have you heard this Jared and I was like was he shot like like you know like I know there's going to be fatalities like was he one of them she's like no dude like he was a person who shot everyone and I was just beyond shock but what drove this lifelong resident of Tucson to commit such a devastating Rampage a ruthless spree that shook his local community to the [Music] core at around 1010 a.m. on the 8th of January 2011 Jared lner committed a deadly Killing Spree in Tucson Arizona in just 17 seconds he emptied a 33 round magazine of its bullets into a waiting crowd the ruthless attack would ultimately leaves six dead and 13 wounded customers have tackled the suspect they are holding him down at the Safeway in an act of heroism bystanders subdued the shooter ending the killing spree as quickly as it had [Music] begun it was just an eerie scene of people dead taking their last breath breaths there was some uh cries of panic nothing loud and um and then nothing 5 minutes after the last bullet was fired police arrived on the scene where lner was immediately placed in handcuffs and removed from the devastating aftermath of his Killing Spree the first thing he said to law enforcement is I want everyone to know that there was no one else involved he wanted everyone to know that this was him and him alone with lner safely in custody people began to take stock of themselves and those around them Jared lofer at this time was in the back of the car of one of the police cars um to be honest I didn't pay him any mind at that point because we needed to render Aid to the [Music] victims there wasn't that mass cha chaos a mass of people running like you would almost expect it's almost like they came together and began to help each other I had my blinders on and I was I was taking care of the people that were right here I'm Ling there my glasses are broken I grabbed my cell phone out of my pocket and I clipped my number here at the house and Sally answered the phone and I said Sally I've been shot but I'm okay but I need you here right away I actually said to him what do you mean I thought maybe there' been a robbery I simply didn't know he told me where he was and when I got off the phone I immediately forgot I was just absolutely in shock a 9-year-old child was also amongst the victims that morning well the the one memory that I don't think I will ever be able to purge from my brain is looking over and seeing one-handed CPR being done on a tiny little 9-year-old [Music] girl I realized how desperate it was when somebody came up to me and said there's a little [Music] girl and it doesn't look like she's going to make it tragically on the way to hospital she died amongst those critically wounded was congresswoman Gabrielle gords with a serious gunshot wound to the Head Jared lner's bloody Rampage had left 13 people seriously wounded and six dead Bill did what he did by knocking this man to the ground and holding him there was of absolutely no surprise to me whatsoever because because that's Bill's character that's that's how Bill's made along with the young child five adults were also victims of the brutal spree Dorothy Morris Judge John R Phyllis Sheek dorwin Stoddard and Gabe Zimmerman all lost their lives at the hands of one man Jared Lee lner the 9th of March 2011 Arizona Superior Court Jared Le Laughner was initially charged on 49 counts if he was found guilty he would face the death sentence at his first court hearing in May um 2011 he had an outburst he was he was uh disconnected from what was going on I think Jared Laughner was a a very confused young man who was spiraling into to Madness throughout the proceedings lner's Behavior deteriorated and he had to be forcibly removed from Court deemed unfit to stand trial he was remanded in custody where his mental health declined further he was in just terrible shape he was psychotic he was having hallucinations at one point he paced for 50 hours in his cell got open literally for 50 hours straight he got open sores on his feet those became [Applause] infected 26 of June 2011 diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia the trial judge ruled that lner should be forcibly medicated with antis psychotics there's there is a possibility that Laughner believed he was killing evil people uh he was doing us a big favor ridding the world of evil and this was just a an act that he knew he had to fulfill because these were very bad forces working on our society and he was doing us a favor after 14 months he was deemed competent to stand trial where the prosecution was seeking the death penalty I think he and his representation saw the writing on the wall he would have been executed in an eventual plea bargain lner admitted guilt to 19 of the 49 original charges including attempted assassination of a congresswoman the murder of two federal employees causing the death of four others attempted murder of two federal employees and injuring 10 others through the use of a pistol the shooting really shook this town and people reacted with grief mourning just utter shock I've always known that I was going to see things that most people don't see but never to the magnitude of this incident we survived so we try to be a voice for the people who will no longer have a voice by admitting his guilt lner avoided the death penalty that day will be forever emblazoned on my mind and in my heart and on my soul as the very worst day of my life Jared Lee Laughner was given seven consecutive life terms plus 140 years meaning under current law he will never be released now now this guy has got to spend the rest of his life living with the consequences of what he did since the shooting spree mental health and gun control laws have again become the focus of fierce debate throughout America I think for our people who have mental problems we need to help them we can't just push them out there and let them do something like this it kind of a line in of who do you really know you say you know someone but do you really know him you will not going to find the red flags in his childhood and that's because he had a genetically determined illness schizophrenia uh that doesn't appear in terms of symptoms until an individual is in his late teens or early 20s you get a different Jared Laughner at that point and this one turned out to be extremely violent in 1999 students Eric Harris and Dylan cold would embark on a massacre that would make history people are getting shot all around me and the name of one Colorado High School synonymous with tragedy children were running from the school at break neck speeds and I knew that the world had changed as the clock ticked guy is in a black French Co the body count Rose they would pop underneath a table they would say something like peekaboo and they would shoot someone and with it the question why had these two young men waged war on their classmates and teachers a bullet entered the side of my backpack spun around and actually sh shot me in the back and committed the world's most notorious Killing Spree what caused them to have so much hatred they were willing to walk in and kill as many people as [Music] possible in 1999 the area of Coline on the outskirts of Denver Colorado had been the epitome of ordinary it's a suburban area it's pretty quiet not a lot of crime it's um overwhelmingly white middle class which is is to say very homogeneous place but one spring day in 1999 would bring the unremarkable neighborhood worldwide [Music] notoriety you know April 20th of 99 was it was a typical day um I was eager to get my grades bumped up because I was uh I was 15 at the time so getting a driver's permit was definitely on the horizon the morning definitely was just a regular day starting my shift I was an emergency response specialist I just took uh regular phone calls to the Sheriff's Office as well as 911 phone calls normal day we had ran a couple you know basic calls U medical calls it was just like any other day went off to work I was leaving that day for a conference in another part of our state Tom's 15-year-old son made his way to Coline high school Daniel was um very shy kid very shy very reserved but very sweet a very lovable kid he was someone who even as a teenager was not ashamed to give his mom uh a big hug for fellow students 16-year-old Craig Scott and his 17-year-old sister Rachel the morning had not started harmoniously my sister was in the car she was uh honking her horn uh because I was making us late and uh I had to have my hair just perfect and uh we got into the car together and she was kind of get on on to me about being late and we got into an argument this is the road that Rachel and I were on together to go to school and Rachel would pull into here to drop me off she was just asking me not to make us late all the time and and so we were kind of back and forth in an argument and we pulled up to the school and I got out of the car and I turned and I looked at her and I slammed the car door shut and I walked in the school I had no idea that'd be the last time that I'd see Rachel alive [Music] around 11:19 a.m. Coline School West entrance sha Graves and his friends world was about to change forever for lunch there was three of us that day that chose not to eat uh Dan robah Lance Kirkland and myself we stepped out the side door like we typically would we'd usually grab a soda at the vending machine's right there and and we'd just jet up and take the path off um only that morning uh things were a little different we were looking up at the top of the dirt Hill and we saw two two guys that were wearing all black their black trench coats and with them they were carrying a couple of black duffel bags we witnessed them loading weapons um that we just assumed were were toys and that's when uh it it started they showered us with with rounds and Dan and Lance both went down one floor above in the library Craig and his friend Matt were sitting revising you know we we thought that we were hearing uh fireworks we saw students running away from the school they were tracking through through the the soccer field you know we thought that you know was a senior prank it's about that time for the uh the end of the year for for some silly prank to happen it was a tradition but this was no prank a nightmare that would Shock the World had just begun at approximately 11:19 a.m. on the 20th of April 1999 a deadly Killing Spree had begun at Coline High School in Colorado outside the school cafeteria 15-year-old student sha Graves and his friends Dan and Lance were being fired on by two teenagers dressed in black trench coats my body was completely uh behind a a concrete wall so I was protected the only thing on me that was sticking past that was my backpack a bullet entered the side of my backpack spun around and actually shot me in the back and shot out my right hip and at that moment um I lost my legs completely I was paralyzed from the waist down [Music] immediately what sha had originally thought was a prank was far from it I found myself laying halfway in the school and halfway out and at that moment I knew that my worst nightmare had come true uh months possibly years before the shooting actually took place I had a reoccurring nightmare of of somebody in my family or even myself being paralyzed it didn't make any sense then uh but the second I looked back at my legs I realized that that dream had come true and I was the one that was going to be paralyzed sha lay in the doorway of the cafeteria and for hundreds of students inside the reality of what was happening was beginning to sink in all I remember from that moment was just the fear in their eyes looking at me and I'm sure I had fear looking back and that's when the fire alarm went off and the cafeteria started to evacuate 911 yeah this is Shar at colik high school we have shots te par okay the guy is in a black [Applause] Co ins the temperature I'm out over the prior year the two mystery Shooters had made several extraordinary videos both spoof and serious that were chillingly similar to the Spree to come the violent merciless attacks played out in the videos had now become a reality the two Shooters walked down uh to try and finish off everyone and I watched um one of the shooters uh shoot Lance in the face at Jefferson County Sheriff's Department Detective Kate Batton was just returning from an early lunch I asked what was going on they said that there was a shooting at Coline high school so at that point I started driving towards colum line and that's when it became surreal because the dispatcher was talking about snipers on the roof they were talking about bombs exploding and I'm I'm just astounded that this is information that's being relayed in Suburban Littleton my secretary ran in the door was shut and she said there's been a report of shootings or gunfire and bombs expl I and I'm thinking what are you talking about I came out of my office and I ran down here and as I looked down the corridor I saw a gunman coming towards me uh with the shotgun when I was staring down and I made contact it seemed like the size of a cannon all I kept thinking is what it was going to feel like to be shot you know I thought of my family was I going to die quickly each time a bullet was fired from the gun then glass would chatter behind me I hear bullets exploding in that area and what really probably saved my my life is girls coming out of the gymnasium in this Crossing Hall they were coming into the crossfire and I wanted to make sure that they were not hit by the gunman's gunfire I ran down to this hallway and I was able to get the girls into the gymnasium Area emergency well we just got a friend and call from my daughter saying he's chasing us with a gun and hung up the phone and he could hear the screaming in the hallway yeah 6 weeks earlier March the 16th 1999 in the mountains south of Columbine the two Shooters recorded another video this time the weapons were real that's a slug I imagine that in someone's grade both were students at Coline High School just weeks away from graduating entry exit 17-year-old Dylan cold and 18-year-old Eric Harris no no no Harris was a young man that was in advanced classes um you know he had dreams of going to the military he was going to he applied or to en in the Marines calt was a kid who a few weeks prior had visited one of the state universities in Arizona so his plan was to go to college Cal was at prom three nights prior now both Harris and cold seemed intent on the destruction of the school and everyone in it by 11:27 a.m. the two shooters were in an area near the library where Craig Scott and numerous fellow students were working we're hearing the uh the the firecrackers we're thinking that it's a prank we're laughing we're joking about it um and then that's when a uh teacher ran into the room uh she ran out over to the phone she got on the phone to call the police Jefferson County 911 the phone rings and um you know I had a caller on the other end of the line who stated that something was happening at Coline High School there is a student here with a gun he get shot out a window there was children in the library and she wanted to obviously you know protect them and take care of them under the tables kid head under the tables she saw the shots happen she knew this was serious she knew this was real okay we've got help on the way ma'am okay okay oh God stay in the line with me oh God just stay down I got underneath the table with my buddy Matt um and then my friend Isaiah he came and he sat next to me still lying paralyzed in the cafeteria doorway 15-year-old sha could do nothing but listen I can hear explosions going off upstairs and I can hear people screaming and I can hear gunshots just echoing throughout the school and there's just chaos everywhere I've got every student in this library on the floor you better stay on the floor we have paramedics we have fire and we have police on route we were just setting down to lunch and the tones went off for a reported possible drive by shooting near Coline High School my partner and I jumped into to the medic unit and started heading towards Coline as we pulled up several students running by and and one young gal had a bullet hole in her I believe right C we treated her after several minutes shooting and throwing homemade bombs in the corridor outside Harris and cold now approached the library entrance where the teacher was under the desk on the line to 911 dispatch I remember trying to get her to close the doors and lock them to keep everyone in is there any way you can block the door so no one can get in I I do not right outside that door I'm afraid to go to the okay it was trying to keep her calm so that I could you know figure out what was going [Music] on every get up right now [Music] liary I'll rip off your goddamn head Dylan was a family friend of our kids for a long time he grew up here sort of Dylan was here a lot um the kids met each other in the first grade and became best friends hey what's going on dude this is Dylan there were never fights a lot of kids you have to send home after a while cuz you know it gets with boys it was great the three of them got along great he was a nice gentle young man Dylan cold was born in Colorado and at the time of the shooting was living in his parents Designer Home in a desirable natural area just outside the town Dylan's parents they were intellectuals and artists at heart they had met at Ohio State University uh in the art uh program they didn't believe in spanking um they didn't believe in guns they didn't believe in war they were pacifists Eric Harris's background was also far from underprivileged Eric's father was ex-military he was a decorated uh air force test pilot it required them to bounce around a bit from City to city as his father would get transferred but lived in Normal midle middle class neighborhoods not living in the inner city and subject to gangs or drugs or violence it did affect Eric however always having to move to another school make new friends again that was tough for him Eric Harris and Dylan cold were both deeply into computers and both complained they were victims of bullying by sporty students known jocks after settling in the colomine area Harris became friends with cold and as such also hung out with Dylan's friend Brooks brown but it would not always be a smooth relationship he had thrown a snowball at Brooks's car and cracked the windshield and a kid came up and said here's Eric's backpack I took it while he was throwing the Snowballs so I'm thinking what's this I'm going to take the the backpack back so we drove down in the car and I rolled down the window and I said to Eric um I've got your backpack meet me at your mom's house and we rolled back up the window well he started banging on the window crazy saying give me my backpack he was frantic that was the first time I saw that anger and it was very unusual it was it was quick and it was fast and it was unrelenting I will freaking kill you I'm going to pull out a goddamn shot the 20th of April 1999 11:29 a.m. Coline High School western side Eric Harris and Dylan cold entered the library where four staff members and 52 students were hiding as soon as they came in they were shooting off their guns they began to uh yell at students they were making some mocking comments comments nobody whatever their race sex or social status would be safe from The Killing Spree the first person that they killed was Kyle delasco who didn't know to hide he had a disability and he likes simple things his family said he liked um panda bears he liked coloring and they became the bully what would happen next in that Library would horrify the world throughout 1998 and early 99 Coline high school students Eric Harris and Dylan cold had made a number of Home Videos themed around violence on April the 20th just weeks before they were both due to graduate fantasy became reality at 11:29 a.m. they entered the [Music] library like his fellow students 16-year-old Craig Scott was hiding under a table with his friends Matt and Isaiah a lot of students were um were being were being quiet some girls were crying and some girls were begging for their life 911 dispatcher Renee Napoli was listening in to a phone line left open at the library desk I could hear um them speaking as well as the children in the library and I there was the the definite sound of gunshots they actually fired out the windows at the police officers and two of those police officers or Deputy sheriffs um fired back they then walked over and they started systematically shooting the kids they treated it like it was a game uh like they were having fun what one point they would pop underneath a table they would say something like peekaboo and they would shoot someone I think that they were enjoying themselves through a good portion of the shooting there was a lot of hooting and hollering and and uh um false bravado between the two of them three would be shot dead and four injured before Harris and cold worked their way towards Craig Scott they came over to where I was um and they saw Isaiah and Isaiah was one of the very few africanamerican students in our school and I believe Dylan called Eric over and using a racial slur we have an n-word over here at one point he was kind of backing up underneath the table and then they were one point he was being P pulled out and this is something that came up up in my memory later I remember Isaiah said I want to see my mom they shot Isaiah and then they turned their gun towards Matt and they shot Matt I had decided to uh pretend to be dead and not draw any attention to myself and so I um I laid there and uh I could hear their last breaths being taken five more students would lose their lives leaving 10 dead and 12 injured in the deadly Library spree before Harris and cold left the room at 11:36 a.m. and began wreaking further Havoc around the school Cas emergency yes we do can you guys send lots and lots of paramedics we have paramedics we have fire and we have police on R SWAT sniper sha Dugen was one of several Law Enforcement Officers with children at the school I got a page and it said uh all SWAT respond to a critical incident so I have all my gear and I'm trying to call my daughter and uh she's not answering her page and she was a senior in the school that day so I'm a little franic that uh she's not responding hundreds of emergency Personnel were flocking to the school there was ambulances and fire trucks and police cars and and sheriff's cars parked everywhere and children were running from the school at break neck speeds as fast as they could I was running for my life and when I got behind the police car I couldn't help but be thinking about Matt and Isaiah because they they were there was still there was still a little bit of breathing and I felt I felt a little like a [Music] coward my God I was under a table and people were getting shot all around me it was overwhelming to see the emotion on these kids' faces and I knew that the world had changed and there's so many people oh my God everybody was calling 911 from inside the school from outside the school so the information that we were getting was conflicting as a sniper um you ask what your Rules of Engagement are is this a deadly force situation and I was told if any any High School age kids come out in Black trench coats with weapons they were to be shot amongst the confusion the name of one suspect began to trickle out I suppose to Brook Brown as a student okay given me good suspect information I think this is the guy okay what's what do you got for name okay last name is Harris he was friends with him approximately two years ago but then he started acting really strange okay it would be revealed that Eric Harris's Behavior had already been seriously worrying some people along the way Eric did let out a different lot of signs he had on his uh his website talking about how he wanted to kill all sorts of people hundreds of people wanted to kill everybody in Denver um and in particular Brooks Brown his former friend disputes like the incident with the broken windshield had put Brown on Harris's Hit List Brooks was supposed to pick Eric up for school and Brooks was terrible with being on time and Brooks slept in and didn't pick him up and that was it that was it and I said to Brooks can you smooth it over and Brooks said it doesn't work that way with Eric and so that was the indication Eric doesn't forgive he was an injustice collector Dylan who was still friends with and had been lifelong friends with uh Brooks warned Brooks uh to go to the website and see what was going on he was posting threats about uh wanting to kill Brooks and that's the thing we took to the police and from when he started making the death threats he wasn't allowed in our house anymore we knew that Eric was dangerous we did not know Dylan when we turned them into to the police Eric was in into pipe bombs and he was talking about it on his website there was actually a search warrant drawn up um but then was never taken before a judge to search aric's house um that was never followed up on because there was another series of murders in the town where the person investigating sort of went off that case for a while and never picked it up again X but Harrison Cold's plan involved something much worse than homemade pipe bomb grenades as Shawn Graves still paralyzed IED and bleeding half inside the cafeteria door was about to experience I started hearing the gunshots getting closer and that's when I realized that they were coming down the stairs in the cafeteria they just kept getting closer and closer and closer and I started hearing explosions but every time there was a shot and then one of those larger booms went off I flinched Harris and Cold's Killing Spree had not just been planned as a shooting before they had opened fire that morning they had placed two large explosive devices in the canteen they had been timed to explode at 11:17 a.m. and the two students had planned to wait outside to pick off any survivors fleeing the scene Eric Harris had even gone so far as to study how many people were in the cafeteria at any given time during the lunch hour so he set those bombs to go off when he would have the mass casualty approximately 450 is what he was estimating and we had 455 kids down there the bomb's timers had not worked which is why Harris and cold had begun their Killing Spree with their guns however they'd not given up on their dream of blowing up the school well I didn't know it at the time there was actually a propane canister bomb essentially that was no more than 5 ft from where I was laying and they were shooting at it trying to get the bomb to go off their new attempts to detonate the bombs only succeeded in a relatively small partial explosion and fire but they were a sign of a highly planned premeditated suicide mission these two students did not just snap in this case it was clear they began talking about doing something like this just about uh a little over a year before Eric Harris's first entry in his journal in his notebook is April 10th 1998 the first words I read I think kind of set the tone and it was I I hate the effing world you know he's not talking about hating jocks he's not talking about um you know any kind of particular group he makes fun of just about everybody people who drive too slow in the fast lane people who say across instead of across or you know mispronounce words you know any trivial thing you know there's there's nothing too trivial for Eric to have contempt for you Dylan also had a lot of writings uh and notes that he left his centered around his emotions his feelings uh he clearly stated he was depressed he clearly stated that uh his his life was a mess Dylan's Journal went on for two years and the very first page he talks about killing himself he had a miserable perception of himself and often at complete odds with reality he was in my mind a classic adolescent depressive or going through an adolescent depressive episode when confronted with some of his inappropriate behavior he would get extremely angry whereas when people confronted Eric with some of his earlier misbehaviors he would respond in a classic Psychopathic way he would tell you what you wanted to hear promis never to do it again and would be looking you in the eyes and deliberately telling you what he thought you wanted to hear Harris had a personality disorder uh that made him uh lacking in empathy for the suffering of victims uh made him very manipulative and crafty you know he had a uncanny abil ability uh to present himself any way he wanted so he looked like a good guy to many people but actually he didn't have a conscience or what Sigman Freud called a super ego Brooks Brown's mother experienced Eric's excuses when his father sent him around to apologize for damaging her son's windscreen he looked at me and he said Mrs Brown I'm sorry I didn't mean any harm and I said look Eric you can pull the wool over everyone's eyes but you're not going to do it over mine I you come by this house you threaten my kid you do damage I'm going to call the police so you stay away from our house and stay away from me and he said are you calling me a liar and I said yes I am and don't come around the house again and he got bright red I mean he was so angry at me and he left the house together Eric Harris and Dylan cold had become a deadly partnership and the two killers were now wreaking havoc not only inside the school but outside too as parents feared for the fate of their children about the time I got to my sniper position my phone rang and it was my daughter and I said are you okay she say yeah I'm home and I said okay uh I have to go I love you and uh we hung up many parents including Daniel mouser's father learned of the unfolding events through the media there in on the television was news coverage it looked terrible but I said to myself well if there's something going wrong at the school certainly my son wouldn't be involved he was not somebody who'd be in trouble or being targeted by somebody when I got home my wife had a very concerned look on her face why wasn't he calling us [Music] so I agreed to go to another school where a number of the students were being taken in school buses after they escaped and as I was driving I was listening to the news coverage and at one point I heard them mention that they were taking some students to the hospital and one of the ones they mentioned was a 15-year-old boy who was shot so of course the first thing I thought was 15 years old that's how old Daniel is what if that's Daniel could that be my son at the nearby Elementary School many parents would be reunited with their traumatized kids I saw parents walking out with children and I just said to myself I want to be one of them I want to get this over with I want to be one of those people by 12:02 p.m. Coline High School cafeteria exit student sha Graves bleeding profusely had passed out meanwhile two medic units approached his location I drove around the souths side as we're pulling into the parking lot through all the cars see several students hiding behind cars several deputies with their weapons strained on the building I couldn't figure out what woke me up but when I did snap back to it there was some motion behind me and as I overlooked my shoulder the there was an ambulance sitting right behind me I saw two paramedics one jumped out of the driver's seat and the other from the back of the ambulance and they grabbed me picked me up by my shirt and my belt and they were dragging me out and I remember just looking down to see my arms and my legs dangling and that's when the shooters realized that somebody was down there helping us and I could see the concrete just poofs of white dust they were they were opening fire on us they were trying to kill us again holed up amongst the dead and injured in the library Eric Harris and Dylan cold now have their weapons trained on the paramedics and casualties below by 12:02 p.m. on the 20th of April 1999 Eric Harris and Dylan cold had been running a muck in Coline high school for more than 40 minutes leaving a trail of dead and injured in their wake then as fire department paramedics moved in to assist casualties like Shawn Graves and his friends Harris and cold began firing on the kids and Rescuers I found medic 13's crew were struggling to get sha Graves loaded up into the medic unit so I came up in the middle of him and one had the head the other had the feet feet and we stepped into the ambulance they threw me in first saw another young man laying by the fence and and he turned his head and made eye contact with me and said help me I scooped up and dumped the young man literally into the back of the ambulance so that they could get out of the gunfire I just remember hearing that the sounds of bullets hitting the top of the ambulance just the metal tinging and that uh take that away from all of that as being a sound that I'll never forget it would be among the last acts of Harrison Cold's Killing Spree they were shooting at the cops they were taking pot shots and police were firing back I think they realized the only Escape was going to be into the long arm of the law and a prosecution and jail and prison and I think there was a thought of let's end this the way we want it to end let's control our own destiny at around 12:08 p.m. Eric Harris and Dylan cold took their own lives but for the children of Coline high school and their parents the nightmare was far from over kids would leave Coline and they would be placed on a bus and reunified with their parents and as the night went on uh buses were not arriving and there were still parents left after nothing happening for a while they informed us that there was one last school bus that was coming one last school bus with students but for some desperate parents Clinging On To The hope that their children would return there was to be no happy ending later on the authorities confirmed to us that they made a terrible mistake there was no last scopus at the the end of the day we had 13 innocent people killed which were 12 students and and one teacher in addition Harrison clayball also dead uh by a parent suicide in the library so we knew we had 15 fatalities most of the fatalities in the library for Craig Scott who had suffered the trauma of having his friends murdered beside him in the library there was worse to come when he learned of the fate of his sister Rachel was the first one that was killed and she had been killed right outside the school library and I realized that when I ran out of the school I had ran right by Rachel [Music] and my son was one of the the last that was shot he was next to who was shot and from the reports that we have Eric Harris looked at Daniel and insulted him I believe it was he called him for eyes because he wore glasses and he fired a shot that went into Daniel's hand Daniel fought back he took the chair that was there and he pushed it uh towards Eric Harris and for that he paid with his life Eric Harris fired one more time and shot him in the face killed him so what caused these two students both just weeks away from graduating to have such disdain for human life these two kids did not come out of their mother's womb hating what happened from the time they were born to the time that they carried out this horrific act one thing that is erroneous is to talk about why they did this implying that it was for the same reasons they were too basically different guys in my colloquialisms I would say Eric Harris was filled with anger with rage he wanted to hurt other people and didn't care if he died Dylan on the other hand I believe was hurting inside and at various times wanted to die because he felt so bad he just saw no reason to keep on living people who study these called them diads and you know there's a long history of Bonnie and Clyde leapold and lobe and very often most often you have a stronger person and a weaker person in this case um Dylan had incredibly low self-esteem needed somebody to validate him make him feel good about himself some consider bullying at the school to be the primary factor once you hate the bullies and no one does anything to defend you you hate the people in the class that don't say anything you hate the teacher that doesn't say anything you hate the counselors that allow it to happen they in in essence end up hating the school not just the bullies they hate the school and they want to kill the school I think that they didn't see that they had a lot going for them they became isolated and that isolation and then exposure to a lot of negative influences in their life that they chose to focus on I think really took them towards a darker and darker Place Harris was the dominant person who inspired the Coline Massacre and I think Cleo went along to get along it was that chemistry that created this insane circumstance where they were able to kill lots of people uh with more impunity for the Coline teachers students and parents life would never be the same again I was paralyzed from the waist down I spent um months in the hospital they didn't foresee me ever walking again and I I was angry I was very angry about that but at the same time I'm I'm extremely stubborn so I didn't let that be the end of it I made a goal for myself to walk across the stage of graduation I wanted to be able to graduate knowing that I didn't let those two control my life I didn't let them ruin my life and I've actually been walking ever [Music] since for 911 dispatcher Rene Napoli who listened as 10 children were murdered in the library the enormity of what she'd heard soon hit home my first day off um I went to pick up my children from high school and I had a uh had a really hard time picking up my own children from high school so much so that my son had to drive home and that's when it really hit me is that I I'm able to pick up my children from high school and somebody else is not not able to do [Music] that the words that we have here were written by my wife she did a great job of summing up Daniel's life and what this means to us to have to have this here to honor him wow just like they did it for Daniel [Music] in 2011 during just one afternoon Anders brevik embarked on a murderous rampage that would send shock waves around the globe we all had this Sensation that an act of war was really taking place as the clock ticked the body count Rose we had no idea if there was 15 people shooting one person shooting death toll was just Rising all the time now I was convinced I was dead and with it the question why had brevic waged a 3 and a half hour war on his own innocent countrymen it's like trying to understand um Ted Bundy or Adolf Hitler and committed history's deadliest killing spree who did this who is behind this where did the hatred come from [Music] the 22nd of July 2011 Norway a Scandinavian country admired for its landscape High living standards and for having one of the lowest murder rates in the world in the capital city of Oslo the day had begun like any other 22nd of July uh is in the middle of the main holiday in Norway um and of course the weather was pretty bad as it always is um but it's still summer so most of the people were actually at holiday pretty normal Summer's Day in Norway actually we were in the office um and um it was quite a busy Friday um we were all looking forward to the weekend at 3:18 p.m. a white van is captured on CCTV parking next to Norway's government headquarters its driver is 32-year-old Anders brevik and cameras record him leaving the scene armed and dressed in police style uniform minutes later at 3:26 p.m. the country would be changed forever as the world's worst kinning spree began Yim ringstad a local shop owner would feel the ferocity of the explosion firsthand I remember just being in the office and um suddenly there was just like a pressure wave big pressure wave that just um kind of U felt like it just blew through the whole building there was uh debris and dust everywhere in the air I thought the building would come down as well local businessman Yan tanberg would be one of the first on the scene to witness the unfolding Fallout when the bomb exploded I was uh underneath this building here in my car driving uh actually I was on my way home had to lay down on the floor in in my car I thought the ceiling was coming down uh I was scared um it was a big air pressure through the tunnel my car stopped actually I started again and I drove out from the tunnel immediately when I got out from the tunnel I saw this U disaster that had occurred outside I started to film maybe 8 seconds after the blast or the bomb went off the massive deadly blast killing eight transformed Oslo from tranquil to terrifi [Music] I thought it was a truck that had run it ran into the building or an earthquake everybody around me just froze like they didn't know what to do and I just ran out to see what was going on and then I when I got to the door the the second I got out I saw glass falling down from the sky so I couldn't run out I saw people on the street people were laying on the street uh it was very quiet I can remember it was totally silent um only thing I can hear was um the alarm inside the buildings the fire [Music] alarms with authorities beginning to arrive the scale of the task facing them quickly became apparent Pi up the blast you could hear it all over Oslo up to 70 80 kilom away from from this spot we could people could hear the the bomb went off we could feel it uh uh even where I was living so I went outside uh and I looked toward the center of the town and there was smoke coming up where our government buildings are first thing I thought was um Norway was under [Music] attack one building I went into uh help some people out one building was so damaged so I I couldn't go into it I was afraid uh it will fall [Music] down it was a vacation it was a summer it was 3:00 in the afternoon most of the people were not at work thank God so most of the offices were empty the doors the walls everything was smashed in so we couldn't see that it has been an office people were really scared in town for more bombs or for who who did it the white van parked outside the government buildings had been packed with almost a ton of fertilizer-based explosives its detonation had left eight dead and more than 80 injured we all had this sensation of uh that an act of war was really uh you know taking place and we were wondering who did this who is behind this where did the hatred come from at 3:26 p.m. the 22nd of July 2011 Norway's capital city of Oslo had been devastated by a massive car bomb it was a day that Anders brevik had been preparing for for months and the bombing was merely the beginning of his Killing [Music] Spree the 13th of February 1979 Oslo Anders brevik is born to a diplomat and a nurse his childhood was marked by by the divorce of his parents and worrying behavior that would draw the attention of the authorities at a very young age he was under observation by child psychiatrist when he was at the age of three 3 or four years old uh and they all uh gave him a quite serious diagnosis uh that that that he was uh already different psychiatric setup than than than normal kids at the age of four brevic was a obessed by psychologists because they became quite concerned about the home life his mother was bringing him up in they thought that he'd been sexualized in some way and that his mother was projecting her own ideas onto him that weren't appropriate for a 4-year-old boy the family unit would quickly begin to dissolve leaving Anders in the care of his increasingly unstable mother and isolated from his father I think bik's father is is present mostly in the form of of his absence you know he was uh he was not there for bra he certainly didn't have much of a family uh to to live with I would say he was of a neurotic background he was an individual who was prone to outbursts or dramatic scenes and shows of of larges as the dust began to settle in oslo's City Center the investigation had begun into who could be behind the atrocity [Music] I actually thought about 9/11 something like that because uh it was like a disaster area because people were just walking around slowly like they were like zombies in the ense so what it for Oslo and was completely unprepared for something like this and U pretty much taken with their pants down one of the interesting things about brevik spree of course is that he bought himself extra time for a while the police are only taking calls about the bombing and nothing else for pictures coming through to the police control room would offer the first crucial clues in their hunt for the perpetrator for but the culprit was already one step ahead of the authorities and what he had planned next would dwarf the Carnage in the city and shock the entire world braik uh was driving out of town when the uh when his bomb exploded I think he enjoyed the deception he was absolutely relishing the Artistry of what he was doing he was driving for about 4 minutes until he came to the nearby lake of tun with confusion and tensions mounting across the country brevik would begin to execute the second stage of his plan the island of utoya was hosting a summer camp of young labor party activists and brevik was headed straight for them and he parked his car uh on the ferry Crossings over to UTA and he presented himself as the security police officers there to uh instruct them about security measures that needed to be taken in light of the the explosion that had just happened in Oslo and they sent the ferry over to collect him what would come next would be an act so Sinister it would strip a generation of its [Music] innocence located 50 minutes outside of Oslo the picturesque island of utoya is famed for its outstanding natural beauty Ura is actually like uh whole Norway just placed within a couple of uh thousand square ft playing host to the annual summer camp for the youth division of the labor party utoya seemed a perfectly formed Paradise from Air it looks like a heart just dropped uh into the ocean every year we've been using the island for a big summer camp Where We Gather maybe 700 youth one one week in in July I cannot explain it in any other word that a perfect summer camp [Music] but this island idle would soon be transformed into a nightmarish vision of Violence by Anders brevik people were playing football volleyball everything was just normal perfect suddenly um the one who was running the island we called her mother utab comes in with a look on her face that I've never seen before on anyone and she said something has explode in in Oslo of course we were shocked but and we saw pictures and it was like seeing a like scenes from a city in the war it was like someone switched the light off and took the breath out of everybody's lungs it was no joy anymore I remember walking up here and my mother called me she was worried something happened to me and I said no nothing happened I'm on I wasn't in Oslo and uh she should be just calm because I'm probably at the safest place on the in Norway right now no one could have imagined that The Man Behind the bombing in Oslo had his sight set on the island of utoya [Music] Anders bik's position as an outsider had been defined at an early age bra grew up in a very uh affluent part of town uh but he had a single mother and an address which was not kind of uh unpar with uh with his classmates and I think he felt uh rejected aged just 14 he had sought acceptance by joining a nationalist gang but his natural demeanor set him apart from the other gang members as I remember meeting this guy was probably on a party um I can kind of see him uh just sitting there U watching trying to figure out how to blend in however there was one aspect of youth culture that brevik did excel at one which demonstrated his ability to prepare and execute a plan in extreme detail he would also try to establish you know reputation as a graffiti artist so he he was uh apparently according to you know the people in you at the time planning his you know graffiti raids like a general extremely good with the logistics getting the number of cans and planning his missions he was definitely searching to get some recognition uh to be someone as it happened all the time with him uh he he worked very hard for recognition but he ended up being rejected by also by these people brevik has certainly made reference to being isolated when he was younger and in his teens but he's also showed Adept skills at belonging when he needed to so although he postures himself as being The Outsiders Outsider as a narcissist is also very capable of working on the inside when he needs to such capabilities would prove crucial in carrying out the second stage of a killing spree that has already seen eight dead at 5:17 p.m. on the 22nd of July 2011 the fery arrived at the island of utoya disguised as a police officer and claiming an obligation to keep butya's inhabitants safe from harm brevik was welcomed they sent the ferry over to collect him and They Carried his big uh suitcase with his ammunition at 521 the first shots were fired beginning what would be over an hour of unimaginable horror the first thing he did was to go uh and ask for the Guardsman of the island to come with him and the woman who was the head of the camp and then he drew his uh pistol and he shot them both in the head I could see people running and him shooting and I could see three people fall just right here at 5:23 Anders brevik approached the cafeteria a building busy with youngsters I were in the cafeteria and then I saw very many people were that were running outside and I called them because there were no reason to to to run like they were doing and one of them told me that a guy were shooting them um and I both took it serious because he had a very stressed voice but also I thought it was a joke I thought maybe this one was an act I thought this day has been already so absurd it couldn't get any worse I run outside of the building and then there were all already some people that were lying outside that were killed and then that was the moment that I understood that this was for real as confusion spread amongst the campers brevik maintained a menacing calm his singular purpose the intention to kill there was this girl approaching him from a distance looked like a policeman and this man walked normally with a normal speed towards this girl and this girl was just walking normally towards him he pulls up his gun that he held in his hand down by his ties he points it up at this girl she stops and slowly started working backwards he continues with the same speed towards her and a series of rounds goes off and he shoots her down into the ground there were around 500 young people gathered around the cafeteria and the campsite it was like nothing not even a single leaf or straw grass moved everything just stood completely still and at the same time that girl hit the ground it seemed like the ground just lifted itself up and started running away and that was all the people running at 5:31 brevik began working his way through the campsite towards the woods between the strings and the tents and the things lying around chairs it was like an obstacle course this was a obstacle course where if you fall you would die actually the gunman had already shot and killed 21 as he made his way through the woods towards the southern tip of the island he would take 15 more lives I just run and then I came to the to the Sea so there were no place to to to run anymore and then I just hide in the in the grass you could hear the trees crunching from the bullets that were fired away you can also see bullet holes we heard a lot of shooting uh so at the time we heard shooting it was of course terrible because we knew what was happening even though I never prepared for this and never prepared for running for my life or being attacked like this it's also quite impressing how the body reacts and the only thing the mind is set on is to survive before you even start to think about something your body and your mind has already done it before you realize you have to run you're already there before you start to think swim you're already in the water rumors of the atrocities unfolding on Nya began to circulate across Norway journalist Marius Anderson would be dispatched in a helicopter to investigate when we approached uto uh the weather was really really bad it's raining from kind of all directions and you have to go in pretty low like as slow as possible without breaking any any laws uh and I just told my pilot to start circling the the island I need an overview I need overview pictures I need to understand what's going on because I had no idea for many on the island the only option was to swim for their lives leaving my cell phone behind and my wallets in my pocket so I could be unidentified we started swimming I started seeing people in the water um and the the strange thing about your mind is that you don't expect people to be swimming away from an island like like scared this was a summer camp in my head and my head told me oh they're taking a swim and it takes like a second and you're no they're not swimming they're not baiting they're swimming away from the island I couldn't breathe so after 50 maybe 100 meter I turned back I realized this was going to be too far and uh I also realized that I was probably going to drown at that time we started to realize that this is a process that goes over time because it doesn't really add up your head doesn't really want want to believe it you think okay it's reported shooting it might be someone playing with fireworks on one side of the scale and on the other side of the scalea it might be a mass murderer but that's highly unlikely I remember water level was probably around my hip hip or or thighs somewhere standing coughing there was no one around me so I thought thought that there wasn't and suddenly the same man that I saw earlier comes out of the woods just right next to me 8 maybe 10 m away and started screaming that uh that I'm going to kill kill you and you must all die today at 3:26 p.m. on the 22nd of July 2011 the Norwegian capital of Oslo was devastated by a massive Car Bomb eight would die and more than 80 would be [Music] injured nearly 2 hours later a new horror had begun 25 M away when a gunman began running a Muk on utoya a small island packed with young people attending a leftwing labor party Camp journalist Marius Anderson was in a helicopter above the island but was as confused as the people on the ground at that point we had no idea if there was 15 people shooting one person shooting we didn't know that there was one guy dressed as a cop but I remember I saw a big tall character which I then thought okay that might be police the gunman dressed as a police officer was 32-year-old Anders brevik and he had already taken the lives of 36 people on the island at 5:40 p.m. he began shooting at the youngsters in the water he started shooting into the water after the people that were swimming and when you saw The Columns of water that were rising from the bullets you realized this is happening for real and after he finished shooting he turned around towards me and aims at me you can see into the barrel I don't know why I screamed but I did but I screamed that no don't shoot me in the blink of an eye he pulls down his rifle turns around and walks away later brevik would claim that he hadn't shot Adrien at that moment because he looked right-wing in appearance when he was 27 years old brevik had left his shared flat and began detaching himself from the world he moved into his mother's apartment and began immersing himself in a world of online gaming and extremist internet sites he was isolated living with his mother uh staying mostly in his room playing computer games almost incessantly visiting extremist websites he also started to uh behave um rather odly uh he would be sometimes very angry with his mother and uh when she was Ill he would use a face mask to avoid contamination somehow and he would go around in the apartment dressed up in some of these uniforms that he purchased which was really props for this uh character he was building for himself friends would notice a change in the anti-islamist describing him as increasingly withdrawn and reclusive many spree Killers have undergone a period of social withdrawal and social isolation in the few months before they actually engage in their lethal attack it could be that while brevik was in his period of isolation he began focusing more and more on his spree as the only solution but it could also have been a very canny way for him to go off the grid years later he would turn his violent video gaming into reality 6:08 p.m. the 22nd of July with Toya Island Anders brevik had already taken the lives of 49 people with police occupied by events in Oslo local residents took to the water in boats in a bid to begin a relief effort plucking those that had chosen to swim to safety from the freezing Lake one of those residence was local hotel worker Vigo Larson [Music] [Music] um the local loal police dispatched officers to the island Norway's specialist counterterrorism unit Delta Force would also be called into action I called the police several times and and they said they were on their way but um it took more than 1 hour so we were completely helpless at around 610 p.m. a large group of youngsters were at the pump house when a police officer arrived and informed them that the culprit had been caught as they gathered together he opened fire it was brevik and 14 would die at that moment the really striking aspect about the massacre on UTA is how calm uh braik was uh how methodical he was and how careful he was one of the common mistakes that journalists and media reports make particularly in the immediate aftermath of a spree is they believe that the killer was crazed deranged and shooting victims at random we certainly see time and time again in spree killers that they are focused and calm and very much in control of both their emotions and the situation for Adrien and those still trapped on the island the terror would continue I was there all alone I thought maybe lightning wouldn't hit the same place two times but it did and then suddenly a group of people arrived you could hear someone Whispering he's coming by 6:30 p.m. brevic had circled the island and returned to the southern tip where he began shooting again the moment was captured from the circling helicopter and the first shot was so loud before I even could open my eyes I felt something warm next to my head it felt like my head exploded now I was convinced I was dead Adrien had been wounded in the shoulder five of those around him would die from what I know the last bullet that was fired on uh here was the bullet that hit me the shoulder and still is there he uh was captured 1 minute and 20 seconds after the last shot after an hour and 9 Minutes of unchecked Bloodshed Delta Force would arrive on the shores of utoya to face down Anders brevik the last thing that we were actually able to see was the police uh walking like in tactical formations like terrorists like Terror cops do uh and checking out stuff then the man responsible for a massacre would surrender without a fight brevik spree was certainly different from many other sprees that have gone before it predominantly spree Killers either kill themselves or they are killed by law enforcement clearly brevik wanted to be taken alive so he could give his ideological views a platform [Music] although the violence may have been over for those survivors left on utoya the trauma would continue I was rescued by the police and they took me away and I was taken by a private boat but when we came to the hotel where everybody was uh gathered uh all those who survived I immediately understood that the numbers of the killed will be extremely high I'd like to say anything happened so fast but actually it didn't it happened very slowly seemed like we're trapped here forever and some part of me probably still is in one afternoon Anders brevik had claimed the lives of 77 of his countrymen 8 in Oslo and 69 on utoya island he claimed to have committed the massacre as a political act several months prior to the attacks the reclusive right- Winger had moved from his mother's Oslo flat to an isolated Farm 2 hours North all the while he kept a diary of his preparations these would form a significant part of a large Manifesto one that he intended to publish he played a very Savvy game of taking lots of media friendly pictures of himself posturing with guns posturing in uniforms looking very Aryan on some occasions showing his blue eyes and his blonde hair he saw himself as being suitable for breeding almost like a stud for future generations of the Aryan race so he's clearly a very narcissistic individual who knows how to sell the image of what he was trying to pass on under the guise of becoming a vegetable farmer brevik would use his seclusion to his Advantage Gathering ammunition and planning his attack this is when he researched and planned and uh got there with uh all of his equipment and started manufacturing his bomb on the 21st of July 2011 the day before his Killing Spree brevik completed a final wky in Oslo City Center before returning to to the farm one last time he was picked up at Raina station by taxi driver arold tangan I met the Brack in the train station and uh he stand there want Taxi so I ask him if I maybe drive him home since a farm is about uh 12 km from uh Ren Centrum big farms with a lot of space he had the the place and to do what he was going to do brevic has claimed that he spent 11 months preparing for his spree and bomb attacks he clearly knew what he was doing and he knew the best way to go about it he could effectively disappear while he ordered the parts and stockpile the weapons and bomb making equipment that he would need after uh I drive him home he went out of the car and uh he just uh stand in the middle of the cour yes when I let him out he we just standing there with this briefcase I think why don't you go in or do something but he just stay there so I took my time to just to see but I never been down to the farm before he had no intention to go inside the house because he was in a hurry brevic would wait for the taxi to leave before before driving back to Oslo at 2:09 p.m. brevi would make his motivations public sending out his 1500 plus page Manifesto to suppose sympathizers across Europe just over an hour later his Killing Spree the deadliest in world history would begin but what had driven Anders brevik to commit such an unimaginable crime on the 22nd of July 2011 Norway had changed forever Anders bik's attacks in Oslo and on utoya had left a nation in mourning it is sometimes easy just to talk about the number about the attack but I mean these were 77 individuals that are no longer with us most of them were very young the youngest was 14 uh the majority were below 18 so yeah that is that is what 22nd of July is about is is those who lost their [Music] lives I didn't feel anger I just felt sorrow I felt sorry for for the whole situation uh this guy I didn't feel sorry for but um all the people that he hurt and all the families that he destroyed um I just wish him dead in court brevik would attempt to use his trial as a platform to promote his Twisted ideology it seemed like the court was kind of a theater for him what the whole trial was about for him was to get recognition as a political uh terrorist as an extremist as a militant uh and not to be somehow written off as as crazy that picture of brevi giving the fisted salute probably did as much for his PR as his 1500 page Manifesto did and again that is one of the legacies of of pri's murders is that he's been allowed to live and allowed to publicize his deranged beliefs Anders bearing brevik would be found guilty of the murders of 77 eight losing their lives in Oslo and 69 on the island of itoya he would receive a 21-year sentence the maximum possible under Norwegian law a question that still puzzled however was what could have caused this man to commit such chilling crimes to try to understand people like this I don't think it's possible it's like trying to understand um Ted Bundy or Adolf Hitler uh it's impossible that's I guess the question that most of us has been asking us how can one person do this how can you be able to do it as a human being the core the essence of the hatred of braik stems from from from child abuse and uh was somehow refined over the years bravic wasn't mentally ill but but there is evidence to suggest he was either a paranoid personality type or indeed he was more likely to be someone with a narcissistic personality disorder if you think about you know could he have been stopped earlier is that the one time he was really within the system when when somehow the Norwegian State Authority uh recognized there was something wrong was at the time when he was really young when he was three or four years old but the system let him go for Adrien pron the court case had answered a disturbing question it doesn't make any sense for me and uh I don't know why I'm alive how can I be this lucky many spree killings we see some victims are shot others are allowed to live at Coline in Hungerford and again in your toy with brevik we see some victims are toyed with and they're allowed to survive on the whim of the offender he explained in court after a week that he remembered why he spared me and uh he said I looked like uh like one of his like a rightwing extremists I didn't look like a Marxist and he thought that I should stay alive despite brevik having taken aim at his own people and striking at their very heart their refusal to be cowed by their attacker Stands Strong one minute we are falling because someone is shooting after us and a couple of days later we're all standing in the streets with our roses and torches and Rising again and I believe that's the best experience uh a country can have with themselves to fall and Rise together although the innocence of itoya may have been lost on the 22nd of July its beauty will remain it affected Norway uh in the way that um uh Norway is not small and safe anymore my daily life is like before uh but of course uh it changed it changed Norway and it changed me as a [Music] person for Adrien pron the experience of that day may have been harrowing but his bond with the people that traveled there that fateful summer has survived I still say it and um the closest people around me also say it that I never returned home from UTA and um that's because a part of me is still struggling out [Music] there
