over the years movie studios have gone through great efforts to make their logos seem like the most epic thing happening in the movie theater let's check out some of the best ones wow how many times have we heard this and I've literally never even thought about how it's constructed you know what this is it literally is the minor four chord right because if you have B flat major and then we add these notes those two notes we kind of still have B flat and so that would literally just be E flat minor except we also add this oh it's the minor four chord but with its six right one two three four five six we get this and but we're just still leaving B flat in the bass right so we get this sound now you could look at this as you could say well actually no we have B flat major and then we move the whole chord to C half diminished or C minor seven flat five there's two different ways to look at that chord everybody always likes to fight over whether or not half diminished exists people are like well it's no it's either diminished or it's not there's no such thing as half diminished if it's half diminished it's not half diminished it's actually minor seven flat five I literally don't care C half diminished C minor seven five five I don't really give a but look how similar this chord is to that chord right one we might call C minor seven five five the other one we might call E flat minor with a six but it's the exact same sound this is the world of functional Harmony what things actually are versus what we would call them sometimes the naming part doesn't really matter as much [Music] is that right it might be that and then this next part I always thought was really cool [Music] really really simple C minor seven and then we have another and then we have E flat minor again right because we've talked about that earlier and it just resolves itself to dominant which which is the V chord of B flat major it's just got so much nice stuff in it ah [Music] if you've ever wanted to learn what lydian is this is the theme for you [Music] okay despite the horrible Out Of Tune for some reason I don't know this saw must have been slightly pitched down or something but we are in D flat major right here and all we do is we just play around with the d-flat lydian scale which looks like this it's just the d-flat major scale except instead of using the normal four we use a sharp four raise that four by half step we get G right that's d -fat lydian and this entire first part of this theme is literally just the d flat lydian scale have that little Piccolo thing and it's still lydian even when it goes ah this one is super cool actually because what a great transition I mean you want to talk about how to take something oh that was messy take something like that and really just brighten it up that's already nice right but then talk but it's just like it just opens up right it just creates this like ah right which is exactly what they want this to feel like as a theme as sort of I mean this is essentially an ad for the studio that made the thing right and both of them we just use the lydian mode that's it d flat lydian and then we use f lydian so it just goes like this [Music] thank you two chords but a beautiful usage of the lydian mode [Applause] widely loved one I mean listen [Music] it's perfect we're starting an E flat that inner voice movement there beautiful right and it helps develop because otherwise we're just sitting going right which is just boring if we just sit there so we move it that's really nice and then we do this [Music] foreign the way the melody interacts with the harmony here just makes it really really great so [Music] so the harmony we're using is just this very standard flat six flat seven one chord progression we hear it all over the place it's always used in just really epic things right because it just has a bit of an epic sound but when we pair the melody here the melody that first note on this section Falls over a B flat major chord but the note is G sharp now when we look at what G sharp is in context with B major it's the sixth one two three four five six and if you just build a Triad down from here you get C sharp major which on top of each other creates that lydian sound so you're seeing like the theme with basically a lot of these themes is that lydian is this very like optimistic like wondrous sort of sound which is what any movie studio wants to create as their sort of tagline audio representation because you don't want to create something dark and mysterious unless it's specifically for the movie that it's in front of but generally speaking you want there to be this sort of like ah yes Universal or Paramount or whatever it is I associate that with like epic wondrous experiences and the best way to do that is to give us a combination of two things this this epic chord progression but couple that with a little bit of Wonder with that lydian mode right and within the lydian mode we get these Triads that work really well it just uses the notes of the scale we have B major [Music] and we have C sharp major over top of each other so the first note of this phrase [Music] right creates this lydian sound and we're not on it for very long because we simply just resolve it [Music] they're dead simple they just have all the right tools to elicit certain emotional responses from the audience [Music] can we just appreciate the Brilliance of how to start that I love how this one starts because it's so subtle right but it still just gives you this feeling like we could just start on we could just start on that and that would be fine but how do you create even more of an exciting uplifting like ah yes this is the moment whatever's getting ready to happen is getting ready to happen in this case we're gonna watch a movie but like you see what they're doing here like we set up this resolution to B flat right we go four five right F and you think it's gonna go to B flat and that would be totally normal we could do that we could go foreign [Music] but we don't instead we set that resolution up and we transpose up a whole step and it just opens the whole thing up it increases the brightness of the feeling that we get when we hear that key change this is the result all right [Music] In This Moment too always I think it's just like such a beautiful kind of throwback moment right because we get there's two factors there that I think really really send this theme into the top of the greatest of all time lists one is the usage of the Celeste sound right so we get this that's not exactly how it goes but it's a very childhood kind of feeling thing which for many people watching Disney that's exactly what they want you to feel they capitalize on Nostalgia but the other thing is those background voices those background voices were very popular in the music of old Disney films [Music] and so same thing it's very nostalgic sounding very throwback it's very old sounding and it just ties this together so perfectly [Music] I think this one and the universal theme are tied for most iconic of all time and I would say from a music perspective I would give it to this one because I think the music is just more interesting than the universal theme but you can't necessarily fully count that because the universal theme is probably a lot more recognizable right off the bat ah yeah yeah yeah [Music] check that out a lot of people don't know this because normally what we hear is we just hear that it's that thing that after the credits of like every TV show ever it just like plays really really quickly and then it moves on but what that is is the tune as time goes by thank you foreign what you're hearing is it's just the end of the tune and in the full version we actually get to hear a little bit and then we get this which is a really nice turnaround it's a little way to add just kind of like a stinger onto it right make it a little more Epic [Music] [Applause] I want to know what your favorite movie studio theme is down in the comments below did we cover it in this video did we not covered in this video let me know thank you so much for watching this video and we will see you in the next one [Music] this is
