kazakhs resisting change at its finest ๐๐
Nazarbayev was waiting for the title of the prime minister [see edit] that Gorbachev promised him. Thatโs why he was so reluctant to leave USSR. His eyes were on a bigger pie.
Sadly for people of Kazakhstan, it meant that all soviet rubles no longer in use in other post soviet countries would flood to Kazakhstan and tank our economy by hyperinflation.
Edit: head of the federation council to prime minister of the union of sovereign soviet republics (ะกะพัะท ััะฒะตัะตะฝะฝัั ะณะพััะดะฐัััะฒ).

December 16 independence day, such a symbolic.
Could you imagine seeing Hungary open its border after being trapped under the Soviet system for decades, having no idea the USSR was going to collapse, deciding to pack up any valuables you have and leave your life behind for a chance to be free. Also having no idea if it would stay open, no idea how you'd survive on the 'outside'.
