uh good morning this is richard back at you today we're working on a 400 uh three speed in a uh turbocharged application uh big turbo i believe uh it's a three speed trans brake he said the last time he took it out the training was starting to fall apart so we're gonna take it apart and see uh what it's made out of and see what we can do to make it a lot better now he does have this converter right here i'm not sure whose it is not sure what size cubic inch motor needed so i don't know about the converter we'll check it out look at the hub hub looks really good feels good got a little staining but nothing really uh the way they run tractor oil and that's why you don't see any uh red color in the oil uh it's pretty much a clear color i believe i think that's what he said we've never switched over to it uh we haven't had an issue with overheating or anything like that so some people use it i think it works better it does have a higher boiling point though i know that for sure so now this does have an ultra bell on it uh it's just got a six bolt uh bolts in it holding the bell housing on uh we don't know if the pump uh just doesn't have the holes for the extra holes uh to bolt the belt housing on or is there holes behind the pump to the case that has them uh you can drill the pump out and run the bolts all the way through and add them to the case but if they're not there you can't do it so let's get this thing apart get this thing apart i think it's got about a little over 100 passes on it he was saying [Music] look at the yolk got a pretty good groove in there oh yeah it sure does didn't it see that groove all the way around it's really scarred up so normally your governor i would go here let's see if this has a trans uh application normally that cover comes off as a governor behind the factory cover but there's no dump valve that i see here or anything like that now you do have your trans brake solenoid here it's an o-ring right here uh when you put the trans brake button this cylinder right here pops in when you let it go it comes out it actually pushes the modulator valve this one here is probably a quick break because it just does have a spring behind the valve if i get it out there we go okay that's what that springs for it's not so much to keep the valve from getting stuck it's actually pushes the valve off and it gets a lot quicker reaction for the brake to come off so he does have a temperature sensor in the pan uh i think he might have a dump valve because i did notice in his cooler lines uh what the heck did i do and i did somewhere it uh has a fitting in it and here he could be dumping back into the pan right here so he does have a temperature sensor here looks like they had a leak on the tail housing or something that's trying to stop it without pulling the towel housing off or something i have to look through here and see if it's warped or got a hole and i got a little funny spot there i rolled him up somewhere did you yeah i poked that wall just has a funny smell to it doesn't it a whole lot of trash yeah not terrible that's pretty good it does have a screen filter high flow filter it's kind of got a funny feeling to it real slippery feeling but it's got a lot of correct material yeah those fins look like they had a lot of build up in them uh anytime you put the oil pickup tube in you always want to double o-ring this right here it's usually just single uh when you put it down then it seals really well they do make a metal one of these two if you can find them they're rare but they do make them i've never seen an aftermarket but i've seen a factory that's pretty now this is a pretty uh transparent valve body i don't see a name on or anything to identify anything but it looks pretty nice it's amazing what a cnc machine can do we get to open a lot of boxes of pretty stuff too we get a lot of customers ordering really nice stuff that we get to see and it's kind of like christmas every day even though it's not your stuff yeah it's not my stuff but we get to play with it before he does yeah before they do we get to play with it but most of the boxes yeah it does make it fun yeah so wow got a lot of building a lot of build up [Music] now we noticed we got two big check balls right here and both of them look like they'll fall right out so not much to that there's a lot of metal building yeah this is piston cover anytime you get a trans brake application you know i'll pretty much always leave these rings off i've never seen them left on socket here you got a 12.38 bolt that goes right in here got you too didn't it yeah anytime you mess with this area right here take this out and put it back in you always want to take a flat file and file this off again because you just messed up the edges right here and these trans brake valve bodies and stuff do not have any gaskets so you always want to take a flat file and file them down and make sure there's no bumps or nicks or anything like that especially after you just put it together no checkbox that i can see turn it over just to make sure nothing falls out just a bunch of pretty tractor oil now you can see how these bolts are missing here now we're going to go in here and see if we can either have to change the case or we can just drill holes in the pump or what we got going on now a lot of people on high horsepower cars they put these ultra bells on there because they'll rip the factory 400 case but when they just put them on with half the bolts they're almost defeating their purpose it makes it just so much easier for the bale housing to be ripped off the front of the so you always want to this is right [Music] nice tool you got there yeah my grandfather gave me that [Music] somebody didn't line the pump up real good we have a band that goes around that lines them up really nice to center them that way they just flop in and out but he tells like just a dry seal but it's not like the metal the metal type sounding [Music] now now this is where if you don't know what you're doing it's kind of a shame uh i don't even know what to say i'm kind of mind-boggling here if you notice we have an 8-bolt case we got every bolt that this bell housing fits every one of them are here yeah right here count them one so we got one two three four six seven eight yep if you come over and look at the pump you've only got six holes but all you had to do is turn this thing over it's already got the holes in the stator there and right there all you had to drill is to the those two holes all the way through the pump put your extra bolts in now you got eight volt pump now twice that's that's pretty obvious pretty simple to do guys come on yeah i mean at least we don't have to uh sell the amount of case we can actually uh use his case uh the pump's still good we'll look at it and see if the pump is good see if we can put gears in or something now we got a really nice looking stator here nowhere and if you notice they did do something really nice here they did uh plug the converter uh charge uh they shrink them down that way it doesn't push the converter out and take the thrust bearing out of the motor and these while we do this against ls motors anything like that this is a pretty critical thing in a turbo application so if it wasn't done we'd have done it for you so we're going to get in here look at these pump gears anytime you get a trans brake uh you have issues with these gears being taken out now if you notice here you have this little dimple right here now gm realized that they had problems with these pumps pushing these gears sideways this direction so the earlier versions didn't have this dimple right here and this dimple is is to hold put oil back on the back side of the gear that's all that's for because this gear is being pushed so hard this way that there was no way to keep it from happening and the transmit application it's really bad about it so this is a better pump but that's how you can tell a little bit later pump what you want to get this out if this hopefully this comes out come on come on be good feels really nice sweet now you can see it's a little darker shade over here when there hasn't been as much pressure you get it over here it's a little bit lightened but it feels really good we can just put a set of new gears in here and it'll be fine it looks really nice pump gears look good too there but look here make sure there's nowhere where it locks in the converter uh if you notice the converter could have been spaced uh back into the a little bit farther where it needed washers in between the converter and the flywheel so this is the number one reason these pumps fail guys if you don't get your converter shimmed right and this thing could have had an eighth of an inch washer put behind it and got that that mark up in here farther so can you see that trend yeah some yes yes yeah see it goes this way they should space the converter back this direction into the training yes that way it grabs the slug a lot farther you can tell it only had grabbed however they're barely grabbing it when these trans brakes are in there these things are locked down 200 pounds so it's really hard on that gear so we got a nice case thank god let me see here it kind of scared me for a second because i didn't see anything the input shaft is just a stock input shaft i don't see anything right there look at this a little bit now they did take the wave out that's okay uh when you have a real high stall converter if you don't uh if you put a low stall in there when you put it here it's going to be really harsh so when a race car application a high stock converter you can leave it out so it's got the really good uh input hub uh some of them come with a cast one this does have a 480 style or an aftermarket style it looks like a factory gm style though but just probably out of a e now this does have bonded pistons uh ben if this is a race car application you can actually leave the seal off in the drum so let me take this apart right here [Music] now if you look here see they did they left the seal off here that way uh you get the full piston applying the clutch instead of just a quarter of the piston so now it does have a really nice billet drum here uh we've been dealing with these drums for a while now um see what they got here now it's just got a stock gm clutch that's what that clutch looks like right there um now what we're going to be putting in it is a totally different clutch um a lot of people don't even know these exist but we've been doing these allison's transmissions for so long that uh we had the city school bus accounts for so long and we've done some of these allison's that this same clutch having allison 540 545 will fit right into 400. and let me tell you let me hit this with a little bit of fluid it starts soaking now look what that clutch looks like that is one aggressive clutch see the flake i mean you just see the metal embedded in the clutch this thing grips really good it'll actually eat the steel up before you eat the clutch up and that's what we put in all of our trans brake 4 hunters well david's mustang's got them in it uh all my guys all my gosh he's got him so now they did take the wave out of third gear too now this is kind of an odd piston that they use for this because these aren't a prone for uh cracking i'll look and see what else i can find to use to put back in here and and get rid of that piston but we do have a lightweight drum right at the top of some type of magnesium or something like that it's got a billet big old sprag in it that does have the uh snap ring tig welded to the retainer now we'll we'll take and just nick this all these little welds off real quick and and we'll get in there look at that spray clean it out and make sure it's really nice so and two wheeled it back yeah if you notice these drums do wear down in here a little bit uh me and a buddy of mine got together and and he actually designed it but he turned me on to the design of how to eliminate this wear right here in these magnesium drums and it was a genius idea so we start doing it but that is a top secret it'll be never [Music] told i mean i'm already amazed some of the stuff they put in is really nice and then just some of it's factory yeah well i don't know why you put that terrible clutch right in a pan and then you put some good stuff here [Music] now you do leave the band out in these units when you build a trans brake so there's no band that's going to be coming out so we do have a four clutch uh intermediate and we have to stay with that because uh this drum right here has a big sprag uh that it takes a special steel and a special clutch now if we were going to use our 4080 e clutch pack that's what we were going to put in there to start with but since we come out and this drum's in here uh we'll have to go with some new clutches and steels up here this will not fit on the steel don't it won't even go over it now this is out of a 480 e or a 400 but you go to these magnesium drums the steel is bigger in the center the clutch is bigger here different teeth to lock onto the sprag to me it's not so much a better idea the sprite's better but you get uh less friction on the steel because look at the size difference in the clutches you know so better go with a really good clutch yeah but make sure you go with a good clutch set your clenches up good and stuff like that so yes sir yeah let me see what they put this dude [Music] this is that beveled snap ring again make sure the bevel always goes out i see guys get them mixed up but the top snap ring down there this one up here but this one goes against the center support flat and bevel out so definitely now this doesn't have any really special rings we would never use these rings when we build these units this is a factory foil lady e ring it's a hard teflon style we always go back with the high pressure orange ring this ring is just phenomenal when it comes to sealing and stuff so this is a better ring it does have a brass washer down in here uh all the plastic we're gonna be taking out too if it hasn't been already grab my stuff see if they didn't leave something out that way we can kind of look at it coffee was good this morning a little shake going on we go to i hope pray like two three times a week in the mornings uh this just has a solid bushing uh make sure you don't put a groove bushing in a four-letty e so they make them just don't put them in there it's your lower sprag oh bushing's got like a piece of metal embedded in it right there see that that's crazy rotted it right in and i could push it down yeah it did wow make sure your pins don't come out we see that a lot of these pants coming out and getting this washer down this washer sets on here like this and when these pins come out it just starts shaving it now most of the time these have a plastic washer in here it has been upgraded to a brass washer make sure you look at your lower sun gear really good on both sides of the teeth for any pitting or chipping or anything like that it'll usually do it towards the edges okay not so much in the center yeah you can see it's trying mm-hmm kind of hard to see but i have to clean it up it is easy to miss stuff coming down like this we uh have to really clean them up and look at them really good get our rear band out starting to get a little bit of wear on the tips this thing just has a terrible smell it does [Music] now this snap ring says down in here right here this is for your support sits in here like this some cases don't have it if you have a thicker thin support right here have a thick one it doesn't take a snap ring you have a thin one it takes a snap ring so you want to look for that we have to look for everything because we get them in here they've had five hands in these units and we have to go through and make sure somebody didn't leave something out put something in backwards i mean just everything about it so we really have to be on our game uh when we take these units apart and look at stuff so you want to look for wear on these shafts now this doesn't have any upgraded shafts in it it is all stock shafts the only thing that i've seen that's been upgraded uh to me is uh the intermediate drum i'm pretty sure he said it was a salty turbo car too so i'm really shocked yeah well just like david you know when david had his 400 uh he went to turn that thing up more and more power you know you start getting over 1100 horsepower 1200 horsepower that's when you're gonna find this stuff in this 400 breaking right so that's why you're gonna have to upgrade this stuff so we'll talk to the customer see what type of real power that he really does make and how much he wants to make in the future and we want to build this thing right that way it lasts in the future too if you want to do some upgrades or turn the power up because it's really easy to turn that dial so if you don't need anything done give us a hundred percent transmissions y'all have a great day
