tf2's magical coconut that stops the game from crashing (jk, just a misconception being spread)

recently there's been rumor of a magical coconut within the game files that holds the fabric of tf2 together if the coconut goes missing disaster strikes all hell breaks loose and satan returns to have intercourse of your mom while there are legitimate examples of questionable coding by valve this time this isn't one of them first the coconut is actually real you can find it yourself by doing the following download gcfscape and open the tf2 textures directory then navigate to materials effects there will be a file called coconut.vtf that you can open with vtf edit everything else about the coconut isn't true though rumor 1 deleting or modifying the coconut causes the game to crash deleting not just the coconut file but every single texture in tf2 is completely okay the game will be literally unplayable since every texture would become the missing texture purple and black checkerboard but you're allowed to do it replacing or modifying the coconut leads to the same result if you change a default tf2 texture whenever you join a server the server will detect that you've edited the files and revert it back to a missing texture rumor 2 there's a code comment about it i searched through every file in the source code leak and there were zero mentions of the word coconut furthermore here is a post by bucket full of biscuits on reddit that explains that this was just made up and here's the original reddit post where it all started so what is the coconut actually doing in the game in june 2014 the love and war update was released which included a new soldier taunt the fresh brewed victory within the game files this taunt is called taunt coffee associated with this tan are a few particle effects that all have the prefix taunt soldier coffee there's a steam effect and a splash effect as well as some coffee bean effects looking closer at the coffee bean effects that's our coconut in game when you actually use the taunt there is this weird dirt effect and there is steam coming out of the mug but no beans or coconuts so that's what our magical coconut is just an unused particle effect that pretends to be coffee beans valve may not know the difference between coffee beans and coconuts but they don't make the game crash welcome to team fortress 2. after nine years in development hopefully it will have been worth the wait
