start recording okay so uh this is one of those things where i always for because i use b painter for all my personal stuff at home so when i teach i always seem to forget this briefly it's hilarious i know the problem and then i look at it for a minute or two and i figure it out so this is one of the cool things about going to shading right texture paint you really can only see the material controls from here right and that can be pretty useful and pretty simple but if you go to the shading workspace here it shows you the whole network for that material right so you can see the crab gear material here but you can see your images these are all your images plugged in you can see your normal map control right we plug that in between the normal map to give us more controls you will notice why this is having a problem is this it's one of those weird things that kind of i think i had alpha checked on when i created it and so unless it's a color map it plugs into the alpha channel so you'll notice that instead of the color driving roughness it's the alpha so what's cool about this and the shading network though is that i could just left click on the yellow color dot right you just hold down left mouse button drag and it drags out this line that you can plug into roughness and you see how it actually plugs it in properly it's like it's one of those things i actually know and i always forget when i show it then i have to go away for a minute and go oh that's what it was i'm just so used to be painter no take care of this stuff for me so you have to be careful when you create non uh a map that's not being plugged into your color channel that it's actually plugged in color instead of alpha right particularly for what we want so now if i go back to texture painting you can actually see that if i'm actually painting this right you see how we can paint metalness kind of all around these little rivets right so pardon me used to be painter so much that i always kind of forget that for like a minute or two and then go look at it and go oh yeah that's right the alpha was plugged in right and so we could easily go paint these rivets right and you see that's painting metalness right there so that's what's really really cool about this right is that you can actually go in and paint multiple material channels right it's texture painting isn't just about painting color you could paint metalness right in this case i'm painting the roughness uh and letting the metallic slider do the the work but technically you paint metalness too and roughness as their own separate maps i just find if you're trying to do something that looks pretty good without having more maps uh using roughness is a better option and then you just can kind of adjust the metalness as you kind of go with it right but this is just a neat way to kind of show you how you can actually go in here adjust those and if you over paint a little bit right see if you over paint a little bit just go up here to click color go to the eyedropper and just click all right and it samples that and in this case it sampled that white it shouldn't sample that um make sure that we're in cover rough we are come on sample you might sample over here once again used to be painter right so you might just want to go to sample over in the uv editor itself and then you see how we kind of sample that kind of uh white color that's the default roughness and this can let us go back out here and unpaint some areas right if like if we overdid it see how you can unpaint the roughness the metallicness so kind of neat right and i can go back in here and i could select the eyedropper and we can go in here and kind of just sample that color so this kind of neat little extra stuff you could do right and of course i go save image save scene so it's all plugged in that'll save the change i made right to make sure the colors plugged in so you get two short videos today right back to back um i'm just so used to be painter that it i always forget that and then i figured out like three minutes i'm like oh yeah that's right it does that right uh all right so just a neat kind of little thing where you guys can actually go in there and hey paint your different map types and you can paint stuff that isn't just your color map or your normal map and i can go to the little red sphere and i can easily go to metallic turn it up even more if i want to or down right to get different results and then of course if i want to turn on the crab body four for object mode we can kind of see everything and now we have kind of some cool crabness right all right uh so that'll be a great place to stop for there but remember it's just be careful when you paint your roughness map that the color not the alpha is plugged into the reference channel right that was that was all that was keeping it the map was painting properly it's just because the uh a different output right the alpha channel instead of the rgb was plugged in here and so it wasn't displaying properly uh with material preview right so keep in mind kind of some of those basics and fundamentals as you do this stuff all right
