tesla has always been a leader in the transportation industry the company's electric vehicles are a revolution not just for the automobile market but for consumers as well it's no surprise that when ceo elon musk announced the tesla semi way back in 2017 it got people in the transportation and logistics industries talking many key players admitted it would play a significant role in the logistics and economics of the market it has been two years since that game-changing announcement and even as the semi is slated for production in 2021 plans have revealed some changes and possible upgrades to the vehicle today we'll be checking out what the new tesla semi will mean for buyers and why it will change industry before we start make sure to give this video a thumbs up if you enjoy it subscribe to tech division and hit the bell icon for notifications now let's get into it the tesla semi as we know it the tesla semi is an all-electric battery powered class 8 semi-truck that will have a range of 500 miles on a single charge it will be powered by tesla's new battery technology which will use a solar-powered tesla mega charger charging station to enable the truck to run 400 miles on an 80 charge in just 30 minutes unlike some of tesla's cheaper electric cars the semi will come with test autopilot by default which will allow semi-autonomous driving on highways companies like coca-cola and ups are already using electric delivery trucks and many manufacturers are already investing in large electric rigs this is obviously one of the ways in which the semi is currently impacting the industry many believe that electric rigs will reach a 25 market share by 2025 however the semi is way bigger than other trucks and its introduction into the trucking market is evidence of how elon musk is now eyeing transportation infrastructure there is no doubt the semi will have the power to disrupt both domestic trucking and international freight the cost of the tesla semi the tesla semi will cost a base price of a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the three hundred range vehicle and a hundred and eighty thousand dollars for a 500 range one while production was slated for 2019 that has been delayed production has started as of early 2021. there have already been a number of orders from companies like ups walmart pepsico dhl and fedex walmart canada and the pride group of enterprises have given the largest orders at 130 and 150 trucks respectively changes in the design with the tesla semi the company is banking on the sustainability factor there have been some noticeable changes in the new electric powered truck from the time its concept models were showcased there has also been a shift in design from that of a traditional semi truck for example the driver's seat is in the middle of the cap which makes the cab slightly more narrow but improves the aerodynamics of the vehicle as a whole a narrow cab also gives the driver much better visibility and control the tesla semi engine is the main feature of the vehicle and it features an impressive acceleration of 0 to 60 in 20 seconds on a full battery when loaded with up to 36 000 kilograms without a trailer that same acceleration can be achieved in a phenomenal five seconds making it three times faster than a standard class 8 vehicle tesla has already done the math and stated that the maintenance cost of a semi will be 20 less than a diesel truck with such standout features many independent drivers and transport service companies have expressed their excitement for the tesla semi saying it will cut down logistics expenses considerably due to the low maintenance costs fuel-free power and reliable parts how the tesla semi will change the industry the tesla semi will undoubtedly change the trucking industry in terms of reducing emissions by introducing clean technology while this factor is important to many people it's not the main selling point for the trucking industry cost power and maintenance matter most in that business on that front the tesla semi scored very high the cost of power will be 70 cheaper than for a diesel truck while there seem to be many advantages to owning a tesla semi some have expressed concerns too the cons of owning a tesla semi are not yet clear so to truly analyze its impact on the industry we will have to wait a bit longer the problems the main problem with the tesla semi is the charging factor trucking companies have already asked the most important question which is if there will be proper infrastructure in place to ensure readily available charging stations throughout the country without a solid network of charging stations the tesla semi would be a hard sell tesla will need to address the demand for a network of charging stations on various routes in order to make the truck viable similarly they will also need a number of service stations in case a truck breaks down or needs maintenance the disadvantage here is that in such a situation only specialized service centers and workshops will be able to cater to that need then again this is another major way the tesla semi is bound to impact the industry paving the way for franchisee service stations to cater to the technical needs of tesla electric vehicles including the semi the weight of the battery is also a concern as the size and weight could impact the freight hauling capacity of the truck the question of range is also a big constraint although tesla feels otherwise tesla believes that because one-third of semi-trucks are operated regionally the travel distances are well within the capacity of the electric vehicle to improve on this factor tesla is also considering making a long distance truck too is the tesla semi a move in the right direction trick driving is a tough career and the advent of the tesla semi is a move in the right direction at least where the environment is concerned it's good news for planet earth but more autonomous self-driving vehicles could mean the loss of jobs which would be bad news for the economy those lost jobs could be replaced with other positions however like in administration service networks and more tesla has also promised safer vehicles which is a plus for truck drivers other motorists and pedestrians as well for now the trucking industry needs to watch and wait given tesla's less than stellar record with concerns to production it will be some time yet till the industry sees the first batch of tesla semis rolling out on the road will it be a game changer or not only time will tell what do you think is the world ready for electric vehicles to take over the logistics and delivery industries let us know in the comments below and don't forget to click the like button if
