From the youtube comments, it seems that everyone agrees that people who do this(in this case teenagers) are pieces of shit. I actually agree too. Taking selfies with homeless people is stupid, and making a homeless man degrade himself for money is a shitty thing to do.
However, I disagree with the 'conclusions' they draw. I.e. someone needs to stop them and/or kick the shit out of them. I know this is only an act, but let's assume it's real. You have a homeless man, who's probably hungry. And three teenagers who are willing to give him money. Yes, it is at the cost of degrading himself, but if the homeless guy decides that he's willing to degrade himself then who I am to get in the way? You can't eat pride. Dignity doesn't keep your stomach full. Food does. And to get food you need money.
Something I noticed in the video was that, many people were willing to 'help' i.e. shout at them and tell them to stop being assholes, but very few actually gave him money, which is exactly why he's begging in the first place. I'm not saying, the kids are saints and that we shouldn't be pissed at them. I'm saying, he needs money, and if he's willing to do it, then it's not my business to get in the way.
The teenagers also argued with people that yelled at them. The people would yell something like, "Stop being an asshole and give them the money." Some gave money after, some didn't. This is very cynical, but I suspect that these people gave money to not look like hypocrites. I started suspecting this after watching this video. Of course, this is just speculation. I don't know them. They might in fact be very generous people and the video "Fuck the poor" is not proof that they are anything like them. If this were true, you might be able to argue anger is more effective is a more effective motivator than empathy. If my previous claim is true, I suspect the reason for this is simply that people are not aware of this, perhaps an awareness campaign would fix that. But whatever, I have no proof it.
However, I also have another theory as to why certain people gave money. I suspect that bullying that homeless man(assume it's real), actually caused people to give him more money, because they sympathized with him. It's different than the other case, in that the victim can be seen. I guess, it's easier to empathize with someone when they don't feel like a statistic. In which case, you could argue, in a way, that bullying homeless people is actually a good thing.
