Team White vs Team Orange, 2021 Tennessee Football Spring Game Highlights

a gray saturday afternoon on the banks of the tennessee river in knoxville this fall will mark the 100th year of vols football at nyland stadium a history tennessee football fans can be proud of including their 13 sec titles and six national championships but for over a decade now that story tradition has hit a wall with frequent coaching changes and inconsistent play on the field but in 2021 vols fans are ready for a sustainable way forward and new head coach josh hypo believes he and his staff are up for the challenge great chance to demonstrate the basics for all three no kick we are ready to go it starts out with brian maurer as the quarterback and there's a run for d beckwith at tennessee he's going to throw on third down he's gonna throw deep out of reach going for he's gonna hand it off in a running play this is jabari small who's pulled down at the 40. but mark going back to the offense at ucf dylan gabriel was able to link a lot of plays off schedule buying time behind that line having his receivers on the same page and you saw just a little bit of that from hooker very small gonna give it right back to him and he finds a crease gets inside the 25 and has a first down because you're gonna get a chance to get right back up there and lean on him as the couple of these runs have started to hit in secession for this volunteer offense so after the false start it goes from second one to second down at six hooker fakes the handoff to jalen wright throws tillman he's gonna be brought down just about a yard quickly to the line and a quick snap and a handoff first down and more this is jalen wright's forward progress inside a guy who enrolled early in january [Music] right once again kicks it outside and there's a touchdown jalen wright [Applause] seven yard touchdown run for the true freshman from durham north carolina this is exactly the kind of drive this offense is designed to give you you see the defense trying to just get up there and get set identify the front and as soon as they think they've got it bam the snap gets set hooker's been able to manipulate this really well operate that tempo efficiently boys up front edwards on the coverage may have helped knock that away they're going to get a free play here as they got the defense to jump so he's going to take a deep shot this time touchdown long td pass from harris sebelius 73 yards for the orange team [Music] three play 75 yard bailey to jack janssen just great understanding and a beautiful ball puts it right on the outside like we saw earlier the receivers have done a great job of stacking the cornerbacks getting in front of them and getting separation perfect ball placement basically handed the thing to them a chance to be in here in a game time atmosphere lauer has come back here's a throw he's going to take a shot down the sideline and he drops it into jalen hyatts hey who had a really nice freshman season a year ago now i'm going to take it a shot towards the end zone double covered and incomplete for anderson kobe first but playing close to normal football here in half number one there's a quick tackle on the carry here says the back senior walk on bauer going to take off he's going to have the first down in back a chance those are the reps that are going to earn you more opportunities come fall cam after that 17-yard run [Music] goes towards the corner nobody there like the receiver cut the route short so they stack two receivers to the left handed off and marcus pierce met at the 12-yard line and driven down there by tyler barron 29-yard attempt just inside the right hatch and knocked up and true by mcgrath so three come out there's the play fake bailey's going to throw and he's got a man open it drops it into bayless jones offended by trail riley to save the potential touchdown 52-yard gain on the catch the bubble screens you see roll you to sleep for big shots like that plenty of time bailey's got him open again and jones is in the end zone touchdown 20 yard touchdown reception these perimeters these stacked receivers on the outside first just going straight downfield stuttering setting up like they're gonna block on that play for any of those out to the side wide receiver screens you've seen and what happens you see two defenders coming inside on the tight end five yards so harrison bailey's led a couple of quick strike drives and the extra point up in a couple of seasons you know exactly what josh hypel is about and what this offense is going to be about big chunk plays like we've seen so far today and a little bit more it's a transition to it also more attacking style of defense that they want to play instead of a lot of the two gapping and so these defenders are trying to put that technique on display while also going out here getting alignment getting ore finished that last run just shy of the first down and trying to get it there catching out of the backfield at 772 rushing yards second on the team with 30 catches here's running right and he'll ramble for a first down about the 30. this is kept by hooker he's wearing the great jersey so if they you can't hit him can't tackle him so if they think he could have been a pass rusher don't touch the quarterback get into a little and i promise no pun intended gray area on some of these quarterback runs i promise i didn't mean to do that hooker throws near side finds a wide open michael bittner guy who used to be here tempo mike so far it's looked really clean mark which is the really the only thing you want to come out with about you but when you get in a game like situations like this we were a tempo team when brian kelly first got to notre dame and i remember sitting around on the sideline during our first home game when we got to finally put it on display against someone else and all of a sudden you're like this is technically a white team offensive possession and they call it timeout or in the backfield he also had the tight end fans in the backfield and here's the carry for ore who's stood up at about the four and the mechanics in between plays huge in an offense that wants to move quick like this hooker can run this if he wants they're going to say he's in the end zone an efficient drive get out of the perimeter and there's no real conflict player but all of a sudden hooker gets to survey you've got the deal with a great quarterback run into the end zone well in his 21 game also played some quarterback when he was in high school there's a pass out to the far side that's jalen hyatt about two yards short of the first down expected to be somewhat of a savior and we see trying to manage this third in one situation there with that time out jalen wright is wrapped up by the ankles by denise 1-2 for 45. [Music] on the play fake going deep again along the sideline and allows another crack for maurer here now we're going to roll out throw on the move and throw deep jan sick again hit from behind had his helmet knocked off by william wright yanked it off this is kept in the throat touchdown to the tight end hunter salmon the nuclear engineering major a great guy for a quarterback to keep happy with that on his resume but this throw from now or just the icing on the cake and the tempo putting on display the gifts that we've talked about here his dual thread ability as an advantage in this offense we saw hooker use it down in the low red that is picked off warren burrell a pick six for the defense frustrated defensive coaching staff on the sideline just a great job reading the eyes breaking on the ball and then but nothing but green grass in front of them great extension on the play there mark and this defensive group having to make those flash plays that we talked about this defensive backfield 34 yard pick six there for warren burrell [Music] and that's more point dynamic player everything he does on the field in that new orleans offense being such a versatile piece for them might actually be overshadowed by watching the guy train in the off season you see all these videos of some of these prospects a guy like trey smith former offensive lineman who said this coaching staff told him hey if you need the facilities around here to work as we see another great deep shot this passing game going yard early and often but letting me around this program creates a great energy the last catch by callaway up 37 yards they go around the secondary but bailey's a great reminder don't think that there's just one type of quarterback that works well don't think you've got to be the most fleet of foot with uh what 210 yards passing and there's a touchdown run jimmy giving it up jabari small with a touchdown run of seven yards with this offense really well it's pretty easy to take when you've got a hole this wide right here an outstanding job by the group up front looked like javonta is spragging seven play 75-yard drum some other issues with the upcoming nfl drafts about four and a half minutes to go till halftime let's see we're going to mark him down at some point with that great jersey mower now a combined five for 11 through the air for about 120 yards he eludes the pressure of joseph and now he'll run towards the sideline and step out at about the 47-yard line stadium we'll see if this year they get a chance to fill it up it's the fifth largest stadium income to the end of the first half with the white leading the orange third down throw and a first down catch by d beckwith out of the backfield and falling awkward and looking like an absolute brick that is the guy you want clogging up the middle for you simmons was a two-time state champ in high school in the shot put out today recovering still from an off-season surgery aubry solomon so this defensive line group that's moving around a little bit that's being asked to do a lot of time home these guys we know going to be making a big impact this fall not able to be out here today bayley hands off to beckwith and at 12 through the air 250 yards gonna put in the air here and i don't nowhere near jacob got him to jump looks like a free play here for bailey took advantage of that earlier and this time he's going to find jalen hyatts when individual workouts can also begin and then of course fall camp will start that first week of august getting ready for the season and late flag and harrison bayley says 34 yarder first and goal from the two ty on evans now in there at the back and that's caught right near the goal line and kobe bumped out and then the hole right there a strong tackle and here's ty on evans he's in looks like for the touchdown evans who suffered two newcomers ucf by the way if you're looking for a cop averaged 40 plus rush attempts play 75-yard drive [Music] one of two maze on here cade certainly probably the best most versatile lineman on this team but cooper held it down really well at center is shot here and now we see a flag yes jimmy callaway number the clock we rolled right into the fourth quarter and i got a feeling the pace is going to go really quick from this point on a jungle and a catch brought down by cedric at the end of the play there by tillman staying with the defenses looked sharper in this half but it hasn't stopped the offense hits before the ball gets extended and he gets another one and he's into the end zone for the touchdown 48 rushing yards in the win lap davis 6-7 325 pound red shirt sophomore and left tackle [Applause] spencer smith is the quarterback and he hands off to fred orr spencer smith redshirt sophomore out of germantown tennessee in the memphis area or once again he called earlier apparently josh hypo felt the exact same way i did about that call it wasn't any good so he let him stick around for the end of this one debrucky that's tanner to brookie class here that group was recruited and came here under butch jones they've now on their third head coach and we talk so much about the transfer play and try and make a difference in this program as it goes forward you look at guys like matthew butler leaders on this team on the defensive line overall that are trying to make sure that tennessee volunteers football has a great foundation to build on wow what a strange little sequence their hands and go for it in college football that might work on sundays but saturdays that's first and goal from the one [Applause] and antonio malone getting a carry a redshirt freshman for murphy's borough with a one-yard touchdown run thanks easy counter run great job pulling and finishing by the off that aren't going to get as much of the action when we get to the fall but have an opportunity here in neil and stadium today so we're told this should be the last drive of the game hooker throws across the middle and a sliding catch there and earn yourself a few more reps as we head into the next phase during summer workouts booker connects again with keaton who has a first down [Music] hooker connects tillman pulled down by trayvon foster all into this last minute [Music] hooker taking a deeper shot this time to the end zone did he hang on tillman and get down in bounds he did terrific touchdown reception at 29 yards for a couple of acrobatic catches today able to hang on to it get underneath that's gonna do it [Music] treat it like a free throw shooter mark end the day on a make all right
