six years ago Team Fortress 2 released its last update ever Team Fortress 2 is done it's finished the cool thing about this game is that it is H completely unplayable it is because valve and more specifically the tf2 Team does not communicate it's hard to make your game popular when no one really quite knows how it's meant to be played random Critical Hits misleading confusing ridiculous I just want this game to get some ention I love TF2 and I miss it and yet it just became the third most played game on Steam how is this possible in a world where new AAA titles drop and die in the same few weeks how can this 16-year-old game remain consistently at the top in the industry of gaming standing out is extremely important which is something that game developers don't seem to realize because everyone is still making Ultra serious militaristic FPS with the same T art style and personality by the way I guess you can't guess how many different games I just showed on screen however some game developers put extra care in giving their game a distinct personality that makes them stand out from the competition and Team Fortress 2 is one of the most masterful examples of developing a personality in the gaming industry TF2 is absurd it's a saturated world full of cartoony characters and locations with extremely exaggerated physical [Music] features a nonsensical architecture it's a childlike world full of wonder which contrasts perfectly with extreme violence limbs falling all over the place characters with Psychopathic personalities and finger guns TF2 is stupid it's a dark comedy and it doesn't try to take itself seriously and I think that's part of the [Music] charm I first found t to through the meet the team videos these were cinematic trailers made by Valve to promote each character from Team for Su making cinematics to promote video games is a common practice nowadays but a lot of them seem to miss the point not showcasing anything of importance from the game They are promoting some even leave you wondering which is The Game's genre however the meet the team videos do not follow that Trend they not only encapsulate the F mentioned absurdity of TF2 but they also introduce each character perfectly both in terms of personality and gameplay these aren't your typical cinematics which give a small boring backstory coupled with a generic fight scene these are more like interviews where you go and spend a day with each class and learn all of their mannerisms and mechanics but if TF2 was all cinematics and personality then it would be a TV show or a comic series instead of a game so what makes TF2 a great game to play the best way I can describe TF2 is like an FPS sendbox in class-based fps it's common for each character to only have one or two unique play Styles however the developers try to make up for this like of play styles by adding new characters in each major update but this strategy can be extremely problematic because of one thing it's boring I know I've become known as the OverWatch hater and a lot of you are probably already sick of hearing me complain about this game but hear me out Reinhardt by far my favorite hero in this game I've played Reinhardt for hundreds of hours with that said whenever I play Reinhardt I feel bored don't get me wrong I still love playing Reinhardt but at some point you get bored of the same constant play style of Reinhardt thankfully there are a lot of other characters out there that I can just try out but what if I don't want to try out other characters what if I want to just play Reinhardt but in a different play style that is equally as viable well you can't do that it's either Reinhardt or no Reinhardt and nothing in between now let's look at Team Fortress 2 Soldier is one of the the most iconic classes in TF2 his main gimmick is that he has a rocket launcher he can deal damage with and also rocket him he has a shotgun and a shovel for Mele combat however if you equip the rocket jumper the man threats and the market Gardener you can now do [Music] this or take the demoan he has a wide range of different explosives and a bottle however if you equip the Loose Cannon and the tie Turner you can now do [Music] TF2 doesn't force you to follow a certain play style TF2 just hands you General guidelines and shouts go the fact that each team has 12 players instead of your usual five also helps with giving you more freedom because the more players there are in a team the less impact you individually will have and the more room you have to do whatever you want and play whatever you want and this this Freedom you have makes the game so much fun it's good not to feel like you must constantly give your maximum and fear that you will make mistakes and bring your whole team down as much as I like taking games seriously it's also fun to occasionally just blow up it's not uncommon to see other players rocking the worst load outs and guns possible just for the fun of it and some don't even bother to play the game correctly it's not rare to find friendly Heavies who are just there to give you a banana or entire lobbies forming Conga line TF2 has one of the best casual atmospheres in all of gaming but if TF2 is so casual why is it so fun to play competitively uh yeah good H from oh my God oh my God heavy down ooh just barely this is going to get C wow taken down by the and he gets the point over the second over the competitive scene in TF2 really is one of the worst I've seen nobody plays valves competitive mode because it's so fundamentally broken and unbalanced and the only way you can experience competitive TF2 is either through TF2 Center which seems to have its own issues or private competitive tournaments which take ages to organize which is a shame because if you trim out some of the fat TF2 could be an incredible competitive FPS TF2 is one of the only games that makes me want to master each and every mechanic to its fullest and it comes down to the same reason of freedom but this time it's not just about the freedom of what you use but the freedom of how you use it back in overwatch's release ghi used to have a lot of an intended Tech his Ash is an extremely straightforward ability however using it on Ledges would cause some unintended side effects and if you use it on a Ledge and grapped it you would perform an edge bug W Edge bug made Genji a much more fun and fluid character and it's allowed for some interesting strategies however instead of balancing Genji around this new tech they simply removed it and this would become a common blizzard practice tons of other Tech like Mercy boost and doom his slides would get either removed or work to be a lot easier and less satisfying to execute or broken because of small fixes that change the tech and an intended ways it's almost as if blizzard and other game developers are afraid of giving their games depth fearing that it will be too hard for an experience players to get into the game and choose to instead babysit their player Base by handing everything to them in the push of a button and not letting them have any fun meanwhile valve just lets you do whatever you want a single Rocket Jump as soldier can already be a very difficult thing to master for someone who is new to TF2 but the best of the best managed to do entire Rocket Jump roll outs that allow them to Traverse entire maps in seconds this gives the soldier class so much depth and an infinitely High skill ceiling there is always room for improvement and I think that's awesome and Rocket jumping isn't the only example of tech in TF2 watching a demo man trimp with her shield and slide across the entire map it's like watching water flow down a river and I love how surprising it is to have have an engineer one of the least mobile classes in the game mostly focused on keeping his sentry gun and other buildings alive take control of his sentry gun and shoot himself TF2 has tons of unintended Tech that players discovered along the years which give each character tons and tons of depth and instead of trying to fight this unintended Tech the devs actively embraced it and gave the TF2 player base the freedom of using it however they want tf2's most multiplayer mode is fantastic and a huge part of what made the game successful however there is also another side to TF2 one that we still haven't talked about and that is man versus machine is honestly one of the most underrated parts of TF2 less and less multiplayer games seem to implement Co-op PVE modes and the ones that do treat them more like an afterthought than an actual important part of the game but man versus machine proves that there is still a space for Co-Op game modes and multiplayer FPS upon entering MVM you are immediately presented with the best part about it the upgrade station not only does TF2 allow you to use multiple loadouts but MVM also allows you to upgrade and modify each part of your Arsenal in any way you want which allows for infinite gameplay possibilities the sniper can have explosive head shots the medic can create a shield the soldier can and even with all of these powerful upgrades the game always feels challenging ing each Squad of robots is filled with different glasses using different loadouts and status effects that serve to make each gameplay session feel fresh and fun MVM isn't afraid to let go of your hands the regular robots aren't much of an issue most of the time but the occasional giant tank and Sentry Buster can really put you on the edge and you can easily get caught off guard by a sniper an Ang or a spy if you don't pay attention there is also a certain map that's let's say more challenging than the rest but that's a for another day TF2 is honestly a great game and I would gladly call it one of the best class-based Shooters out there however I was very mean to OverWatch so it's only fair that we look at tf2's own issues but I'm sure there aren't many so for starters the default settings are a complete joke random bullet spread is infuriating the coach system is broken melee hit rag is broken some weapons are terribly balanced some MVM upgrades just don't work capture the flag is a terrible game mode some glasses like alternative viable play Styles the flog the gas baser the gas bter and MVM the replay system is broken the Cosmetics are getting more and more unhinged but oh this isn't even half of [Music] it random Critical Hits are stupid competitive mode is completely broken and turbine is part of the competitive pool what the hell is wrong with you the sniper is still the most oppressive class TF2 is filled with Bots and cheaters who can easily take over entire servers there hasn't been an update in 6 years and all valve does is ADD broken and finished Community maps in Holiday updates and sell crappy cosmetics and overpriced loot boxes while ignoring every major problem this game [Music] has as much as I appreciate valve and the work they put in always releasing finished products there is no that Val has ADHD on a corporate level the TF2 Community seems to have an extremely stupid beef with OverWatch for some reason saying that TF2 outlift its killer or TF2 has more players than OverWatch when in reality both games are in the exact same boat of corporate ignorance and while I think one is better than the other it's sad to see some of my favorite games dig themselves deeper in the ground however while one is constantly decreasing in player count the other one seems to be increasing why is that it's because of community content saying that the community Works more on TF2 than valve ever did is sort of a meme nowaday but it's actually true every single holiday update comes packaged with Community made Maps Community Cosmetics the new Saxon Hill mode was entirely made by the community and not only that accessing the server browser leads you down a road of practically infinite possibilities freak Fortress dodgeball slander Fortress all game modes that keep TF2 fresh and excited even if they are not official and Community content goes beyond just the game people have made entire fully-fledged hour-long movies like emesis blue people have taken forgotten game modes like MVM and updated them with new campaigns Community shops were created to circumvent loot boxes and allow you to buy items at a fair price hell some have even made entirely different games like tf2 classic or open Fortress but Community content can't fix everything [Music] the bot crisis is as bad as ever despite all that Val has told us the official servers are still riddled with aimbotting snipers that only serve to sabotage and destroy this game and although 2023 was a really good year in terms of content for TF2 let's not pretend like that was all valve's doing as much as it's hard to admit valve doesn't care about this game anymore they see it as nothing more than outdated garbage and sadly I don't see that changing anytime soon TF2 is an incredible game it revolutionized the industry it gave birth to class-based Shooters and the freid play model and it's so weird thinking that we almost didn't get any of this and instead we were this close to getting another generic militaristic FPS which would have inevitably failed because this doesn't last 16 years but it's grown old it's been mishandled by its creator and is by all means abandoned TF2 although amazing is a huge missed opportunity however with valve recently returning to making games on the new source 2 the future looks very promising for the TF2 IP so I guess only time will tell where we end up but in between the B crisis and Woodville I wouldn't put too much stress into [Music] valve for
