foreign why do you feel that you have to volunteer to me because I think that you are the most beautiful woman I've ever seen thanks I think it's very true to say that most of the best directors or artists in general just make work that discusses themselves basically one of my favorite writers of all time Charles Bukowski wrote a series of Five Books talking about the life of Henry Janoski and Henry chanowski was his thinly veiled Alter Ego they just changed his name Charles Bukowski into Henry chanowski in an attempt for him to almost therapeutically write about himself and it's not just in fiction if you look at one of the most influential African-American filmmakers Spike Lee all of his films are about the black experience in America and on the other hand as well you have someone like Greta Gerwig who whose two films that she's released are focusing on the female experience and what it's like to live as a woman if you if we look at someone like Martin Scorsese who is by far one of my favorite directives I think the reason I resonate so much with modern school saysi is because his films focus on the male experience something like Taxi Driver which was released almost 50 years ago still hit so close to home many of the themes at tackles are just always present the loneliness the Travis pickle feels the anger he feels towards the establishment there's so much of this present in a lot of young men almost all of mine's quesezi's best films are tackling this man that's fighting against his inner demons if even if you look at something like Goodfellas it's detailing a young man who goes from nothing in a sense a very poor family rising up and eventually falling down but beyond that it's not even the external I think the reason Madison's films are so good is because he TAPS in to the psyche of the young man and I think Taxi Driver many people say it's one of his best films and it's because it really TAPS in to the inner Forts and the inner demons and the struggle which in a sense is bigger than anything external in Islam there's a concept called lesser and greater Jihad and it always struck me as interesting because the Lesser was considered the external it's fighting for the Physical Realm it's defending the faith defending the country the people but the greater is inside internally fighting against your own demons and the battle to stay true to God and I think we can look at something like Wolf of Wall Street and Goodfellas and say and casino and say these films are amazing but they detailed the whole life of a of a man you know and the UPS the downs and everything that happens in between and you can say it's a very comprehensive but something like Taxi Driver It Feels So profound because it isn't that big of a story if there is no Jordan Belfort who becomes rich and goes on a yacht with all these hookers it's just one man coming back PTSD written after the Vietnam War and trying to come back into society it's a very odd four because since the dawn of man a young man had been sent out to war and come back and in a sense felt like they've lost their place in society they felt very out of touch and as if they weren't meant to be here and I think the whole film tackles this idea of alienation and even so many years later after the coronavirus pandemic and everything that's happened in recent times a young man who watches this film it really resonates with it because it's like it feels like hey nothing else is really talking about this loneliness this inner angst that I have just from feeling unfulfilled in a sense when Travis talks to the young woman at the shop Etsy it seems almost like he can be a functioning member of society he goes out on a date with this girl they talk she laughs at his jokes and it seems like everything's going okay almost like a glimpse of Hope in the city of Despair but eventually this Force through for Travis as well and it almost feels like because of his alienation and not knowing what is right and what is wrong and how he should be active he pushes her away unintentionally and Travis wallows in a sense when he loses his last tether to reality we see a lot of young men are advising figures that are sort of questionable and a lot of the time it's satirical but sometimes people actually look at these people and admire them but the truth is someone like Travis is very admirable in a sense because he's damaged and he finds it difficult to fit in and he's almost on the path to self-destruct you know to himself to hurt those around him but in the end he doesn't do that and he actually turns that around and does good for the world when watching movies a lot of the time we have this like hollywood-esque endings where but there's the good guys the bad guys and the good guys will always do the right thing which Travis isn't like that he's not like an anti-hero he's not a villain he's not a hero he's just trying his best giving the shitty cards that he's been about and when in a sense he really does win in this battle and does some good in this world and helps someone it almost feels like an even bigger Victory to Prevail in the face of the careless and unforgiving world and to do some good and help anyone really is the greatest thing you could do it's like he says in Chandler's list he who saves one Saves the World entire thanks a lot for watching guys uh I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next time [Music] foreign
