Taste Testing Retro School Dinners

hi everyone it's me welcome to the adventures in apps School of British culture and guess what I'm hungry today we are going to be taste testing real retro British school dinners so without further Ado let's go all right let's see what they have on the menu for Monday I hope you guys are hungry well today Monday we have mashed potatoes fried liver and onions with a bit of gravy and some milk of course okay here's the thing liver not something we really eat in North America mashed potatoes yes please certainly even fried onions wonderful but liver makes me a little bit nervous okay well let's just start with something easy first cheers everybody mashed potato what more can you ask for cheers everybody okay now this is the thing that makes me a bit more nervous so let's just have a little bit of everything a little bit of onion a little bit liver mmm delish you know what that's not bad I have certainly had liver in various forms especially when you're having like a proper like a pie you know maybe it's got liver kidney pie type situation I don't think I can say I've ever had it in this format before and I certainly did not have it at school I'll tell you that much I'm gonna eat the rest of this to be honest now any British people watching hi how's it going what would be your ultimate School dinner AKA school lunch I'm not totally sure why you guys say dinner but what would be your favorite make sure to leave a comment down below no I'll be completely honest liver kind of freaks me out but really it's actually quite tasty so if this is something that you had at school you know what I'm pretty impressed for comparison something that I used to have at school for lunch in Canada a chicken burger maybe maybe some fries maybe it's a side salad you know nothing too exciting nothing too crazy maybe a really sad slice of pizza but I can be 100 certain we never had liver and onions but it's pretty good cheers all right let's go see what's on the menu for pudding ooh all righty for Pudding we have a rice pudding with jam now I don't think I've ever had rice pudding before this feels like a very dare I say 70s dessert also why can't you guys just say dessert why does it have to be puddings it's so confusing all right anyway here we go some rice pudding we'll get a little bit of jam in there cheers okay so that is certainly a texture not sure about that okay here's the thing taste wise not too bad creamy the jam certainly helps to give it a little bit of something it's the texture it's the texture that I don't think I can get behind and yet here we are another spoon here we go no it's a texture it's the texture I'm going to give the rice pudding with a bit of jam two out of eight is there anything else it's just not for me the taste is good like the flavors are decent it's the texture that just really um upsets me for some reason so it's not for me well I hope you guys are hungry because next up is Tuesday oh no I just got home from school the video Happy Tuesday everybody okay on the menu today we have what appears to be a lasagna and boiled veggies I'll be honest I don't really remember a lot of how do I put this veg options at the cafeteria at my high school in Canada it just I don't really remember us having that option I'll just be just putting it out there so we've got a whole bunch of veggies and crinkle cut carrots how fun cheers everybody oh that's really good get some veg in there delicious can you go wrong with lasagna and veg I don't think so the fact that you guys had this as an option at school is honestly pretty cool I remember a lot of mozzarella sticks now mozzarella sticks are divine and a work of art but should you be having them for lunch probably not this this seems completely reasonable I'm gonna give this a perfect four out of four yes please I am more than happy to have this if you guys had this at your school I am honestly shocked and I'm gonna keep eating it and nobody can stop me okay one more bite and then we have to move on delicious okay now we really do have to move on okay okay I hope to save room for pudding oh what could it be okay everybody well who likes custard how about pink custard I have lived in the UK for almost seven years and I'll be real with you right now I have never seen pink custard but I'm so excited okay so we have coconut and jam cake with pink custard very excited look at it just and you know what I haven't gotten anything on this white shirt which is kind of shocking but I feel like that ends right now anyway here we go oh hot custard too by the way cheers that's delicious oh my God that's good foreign delicious then you got some Jam On Top lovely then you got some coconut on top even more lovely and then you have it submerged in a bed of hot pink custard I love this I'm gonna I can eat the rest of this absolutely no problem will I have stomach issues later yes but I'm gonna do it anyway wow that's good that's real good so a dinner lady just told me that pink custard is made with Blanc mange I don't know what that word means honestly this is so good wow you guys have this at school I'm so jealous North America really sucks in that for some reason we never really jumped on the custard train any North Americans watching when was the last time you had custard I bet you a real long time and here in the UK you guys are having this stuff at school are you kidding me I love it I'm so happy I've never seen this never had it I found a new love cheers our Jam coconut cake pink custard situation is once again Perfect Two out of two I need this every day for the rest of my life I love the hit this is so much fun I just have never seen such a thing before and I'm I'm having a great time can I just say a real quick huge thank you to cabbage and some mashed potatoes now what I am learning so far over the course of this video is that it seems that British school lunches are like proper meals I don't know if you had any of these at your school or we've done one of your favorites or whatever but these are like actually constructed meals and when I say to you that I had mozzarella sticks as a meal in school in Ontario I am not joking so these just feel like they feel like meals which is just like I don't know I guess I just didn't expect it anyway every school day okay cheers everybody that's really good you guys already know I love mashed potato let's get a little bit in there cheers this is like the height of luxury does this like real food honestly I'm just blown away by the fact that this is real food you know like I'm just I'm just shocked you guys had cabbage I don't think I saw a single green thing in my cafeteria almost ever other than salads I don't know why but in North America a side salad tends to be like the thing that you are offered to make it seem healthier North Americans love a salad but that's kind of like it or maybe like a like an apple sauce like a little pot of applesauce do you know what I mean like I'm just I'm just blown away this is great also don't forget to leave a comment do you want to see part two you want to see more of this kind of stuff or let me know a meal that I lunch and or dinner side note who says lunch and who says dinner is that a regional thing because I dinner to me is nighttime you have dinner at home you do have lunch at school anyway that's off topic I'm gonna give this four out of four and a half toasty pots almost perfect boiled cabbage while you know a veg not my favorite vehicle for veg you know the boiled cabbage um but almost a perfect score it's just because I'm being picky but we are not done next up we have Wednesday pudding and honestly if it's half as good as this we are in for a treat so while the dinner lady is serving up our next surprise I had a look to see what the Ontario School Board recommends for school lunches and I think this is absolutely fascinating so for Ontario where I'm from in Canada Monday hamburger Tuesday would you like a cheese pizza or a pepperoni pizza Wednesday popcorn chicken with fries or another hamburger Thursday we have spaghetti and breadsticks and Friday probably my favorite entry we have a corn dog so I think it goes without saying that Canadian school lunches leave um a lot to be desired and that's why it's so shocking that you guys seemingly had real meals like actual food like legitimate lunches I'm in awe so what did you guys get for pudding I got my very first Arctic roll now I have heard of such a thing but I've never actually had it until right now okay so this is some sort of ice cream with like a outer bit and it looks like there's Jam you guys really like jammed don't you we've had a lot of jam things so far cheers I do not know how to describe that so there's ice cream obviously and there's like a like a bread coding but it almost like melts in your mouth and then you get a little bit of that jam I've never had anything like it you know what this is actually delicious this is actually delicious I love it Arctic rolls signed me up I can't believe you had this stuff at school you guys are so lucky cheers I'm gonna give the Arctic roll eight out of eight Arctic Tundras with a couple of polar bears maybe a few little penguins this is delicious at first I thought I don't know about that texture but yeah it works it works perfectly I'm gonna have
