hi I'm Karen Edison and this is my G Q action replay of the Troubadour scene from Rocky then we'll tell Doug to refund everyone's ticket and we'll send everybody home hey ray so this was actually the first day of shooting on Rocket Man obviously playing someone like Elton is quite a daunting thing and I sort of got myself into a bit of an anxious State managed to convince myself the whole project was going to be a car crash at the end of this day for no other reason other than being neurotic the costume I wear is pretty much a replica of what Elton actually wore at this at this gig this this first gig in LA and my look but my look is different I have long hair which was a little actually a little bit a little bit earlier and I don't have a beard because it didn't work in terms of the chronology and I grow a really rubbish bit deep Spade your [ __ ] airfare now get out there and play you little [ __ ] eles not particularly camp bloke I go a little bit camp there ladies and gentlemen a rising star and rock'n'roll please well that Neil and troubadour sign is obviously really cool and exactly as it is in the the troubadour Club in LA which I visited after we shot and we were on set one day and Richard man turned to me and said we should say that home over in your kitchen and I did and it's still there all the way from London [Applause] [Music] Dexter had some really incredible ideas for this film the really key part about the sequence which you'll see in a moment was was one of Dexter's brain children and another thing that he thought of which I really love is that this sort of pivotal iconic moment you hear the sound of an orchestra tuning up as if something big is about to happen musically those dungarees made my ass look massive [Music] for a good few months before we started shooting we spent a lot of time Abbey Road with Giles Martin our producer musical director myself and Dex sat in a studio improvising lots of the songs and finding original concepts for them and this song out in himself has said that this isn't his favorite of his songs it has a kind of nostalgic cuteness to it but we really wanted it to feel like I sort of got busting rock number something browsing so we spent a lot of time playing with it and improvising and particularly getting into the song because we wanted Elton at this moment to show some real strengths and provocation which is how we came up with this thing of him entering entering into the song very slowly with one sustained note [Music] when Roque was young me I spent a really long time trying to get good at the piano and transpires it takes longer than a few months so what we tried to do was make me familiar enough with the shapes and the rhythm of the song and the piano part that we devised so that my hand is at the very least always in the right place and moving at the right rhythm so in the hope that that it that it looks the part when when people see it in the cinema but interestingly later in the song when it becomes quite physical and my foot goes on the piano all of those things were mapped out and choreographed before I figured them out with with a piano teacher and then brought them to the sound editors who included them in the track that we played during the scene so that there was a kind of choreographed routine that we would work through [Music] and skill mount stones [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] that's the first time in the movie you see Richard man which should place John Reed who was Alan's manager and for a number of years his partner his lover we had a really good time working together on the film [Music] [Applause] [Music] so Dexter knew that for this sequence he wanted to find something that would convey the feeling of witnessing witnessing something extraordinary and he came up with this idea of you know if Alton was recounting his life as he is in the film from the therapy room of his rehabilitation clinic just outside New York and he was telling the story of this gig how would you illustrate that visually if he said you know well it just felt like we all floated off the ground in our story because there's elements of fantasy that's what we do so everyone floats off the ground myself included for my part they put me on a wire and hoisted me into the air and then the wires are painted out afterwards but all of the crowd amazingly were actually on a series of bicycles or bicycle seats at least all strapped together so they all lifted in unison but they had to do that all day so I dread to think what they're in other regions felt like by six o'clock [Music] [Music] that's shot there where you see me floating sort of strangely from behind weirdly reminds me of the Marley's from the Muppets Christmas Carol because I feel like I look a bit like a puppet [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that was my GQ action replay of the Troubadour scene from rocket man thank you for watching
