hello and welcome to this demonstration of tableau software here at tableau our mission is help people see and understand their data we do this by offering three products tableau desktop which is our authoring product tableau server which is our on-premise sharing product and tableau online which is our cloud hosted schank product all three of these products are available for a free trial and I encourage you to do so after this demonstration let's start by looking at tableau server here we're looking at Cornell University's division of budget and planning website which has a tableau server view embedded in it here in this tableau server view we can select a date range to drill into a program to specify just so that we can get all the information that's relevant to us to look at graduates the graduate school program in only the more recent years all of this is authored in tableau hosted by tableau and then embedded in Cornell's own website this is just one example of how an end user can easily interact with a data visualization that's made available to them and get insight out of it let's look at how you could author something similar to this using tableau desktop for the next few minutes I'm going to be playing the role of a category manager for the furniture category at a large retail store named superstore I'm new in this job and I really need to get a good solid understanding of the overall business and furniture segment I need to understand how the overall superstore business is doing I need to understand how furniture my segment is doing and I need to understand what my first steps as a category manager are going to be ultimately I'd like to present my findings with my team and with my management superstore already uses tableau so I'm going to use tableau to explore my business superstore is a typical organization so a lot of data is in Excel I'm going to start my analysis by using data I've got in a spreadsheet I can see that tableau is classified in my fields in Excel as dimensions and measures dimensions are just categorical information that I likely like to drill down by and measures are numerical information information that I would want to add together or average or otherwise do math with so now the question is where to start with my analysis the great thing about tableau is you don't need to worry about the user interface just double click the elements that you want we call this keeping the users in the flow so as a new category manager I want to analyze sales by category and let's drill down into the subcategory as well it's hard to read so maybe we'll switch this around and let's sort it to identify the highest performers I've been focusing on my question table figured out that furniture sales seems to be strong with chairs leading the way but sales is only half of this story now I want to include profitability in my analysis as well and it's clear that tables are not profitable I'm selling lots of them but I'm not making any money which is not good it's also clear that tableau helped me stay in the flow I didn't have to think about how to best visualize the profits information tella made the decision based on its understanding of the data being used it even picked a red-green color scale because the numbers were positive and negative so far tableau has been choosing forming it's done a great job of choosing a bar chart but I'm not sure what what other way I might want to view this so let's look at some other options we could cycle through a few different ways to visualize this here and we can even see that show meas identified options that are not possible with my given configuration of dimensions and measures but if in the end we decide that tableau had done a good job of visualizing in the first place we can always back out to our original analysis I can see that office supplies like many kinds of data have a number of smaller categories that are just cluttering up my analysis I don't want to remove them because they may be significant in an aggregate sense but let's group them together so I can see them all combined it's important to understand that I've not changed the underlying data the original subcategories are still there but now I just have a group of subcategories as well you can see that there is a prominent tables since they're red maybe one of the regions in my tables business is particularly troubled let's dig into this a little bit more you can see that there are multiple problems but tables in the East is the largest let's focus on this problem area now that we're looking at tables let's look at individual products let's take a little further and look at the underlying data for the highest-selling table product in the east region at this point I have a list of unprofitable transactions that I can share with our product and logistics team my first action item is category manager you've seen how easily you can do some basic analysis of data without having to engage IT or otherwise wait for data or guidance now I want to look at data across locations to uncover insights which means I'll need to look at my superstore data by state and I'll want to see a map to look for Geographic trends let's open a new worksheet for this you can notice a little globe symbol next to state this means that tableau automatically sees geographic information in these fields no special processing of data is required tableau does this on the fly we recognize country's provinces states cities zip codes etc right now the map tells me that we've done business in these states but how much business how much profit have we generated in each state overall Texas looks like a challenging market for us but I'm focused on my category furniture so I'll filter just to see the furniture products I want to know more I like to understand both our sales and our profitability within each city Seattle San Francisco LA and New York are clearly sales and profit leaders Texas still looks interesting to me though I know our competitors are looking to open their and I'd like to stay ahead of them at the same time we seem to have profitability problems in Texas let's call this sheet revenue by city and move on to some other analysis so I've got a good idea of which products are troublesome and I know while we're some of those troubles exist but the next question is is the profitability issue recent can I expect it to persist in the future so let's look at our data over time I want to look at my sales history by the order date this just saved me a lot of work it changed to a line chart because we are now looking at trend data and line charts are best for this and then automatically summed sales by year table automatically understands time and automatically lets me analyze these intervals no macros no scripting I actually need more detail than the yearly sales results so let's add quarter and month a key aspect of working with tableau is that I can reorient my data in a fluid natural way now we read left to right top to bottom now we can easily compare all the years but let's stick with our original view I'm not running a wizard every time I do this just moving the data to where I need it to be let me get back to my analysis I want to be able to compare year-over-year sales growth it looks like we had some variability I can see points where my year over a year was actually negative what I'd like to do now is look into the future a bit what can't allo tell me about future sales now I can see an indication of where sales might land during each of the next 12 months I'd also like a quick summarization of this historical and trend data now I can see that my typical month sales have been steadily increasing since 2012 and are forecasted to do so through the end of 2015 as well I wonder how my most recent months compared to the average for the year now we can compare the average of these selected months against the averages for the other months so far we've been using tableaus built-in best practices to create our visualizations but we can also customize our visualization type as you can see time analysis is fast simple doesn't require me to write macros or any code so far in my analysis I've looked at revenue and profit as functions of category location in time but what else could be driving that low profitability we saw in tables in the East how about let's take a look at profit as it relates to costs here I can see our all-out profit we can see how each category contributes to our all at profit the challenge is that my cost information is in a different database fortunately tab will let me blend these two databases together on the fly this is an example of a report I get on a regular basis it's pre formatted it's pretty aggravated notice the header rows notice the fact that category is a merged cell this is not a clean simple regular raw data set tableau can clean this right up for me initially tableau reads the spreadsheet literally beginning with the cell a1 but with a few simple actions tab will will find the data that you need to analyze notice the data interpreter will just turn that on now notice that the category column is filled in the null values are gone but there's still one more issue I want to address I don't want to call them for each month I'd rather have just one column for my cost data compare this with what we just saw in Excel we've taken care of all the formatting that stood between us in our data now we're free to utilize the data in any way we please not just the way it was aggregated in that Excel report now I can compare cost against profit I want some more detail though earlier we saw that there were some regional profit issues so let's break this down by state finally I want to do a little bit of formatting we've been working for about 15 minutes and if we look back we've achieved considerable insight into our business looking at our data across time location and multiple numeric metrics now we're done with our analysis and I want to be able to present my findings and share them with others in my organization dashboards and storytelling a great way to share the results of an analysis so let's build a story around our findings first I'll need to create the dashboard then I need to include the key elements of the story I want to tell now I'd like to do just a quick bit of formatting let's have a look at that category quick filter notice that when I make changes here it changes only the worksheet that it was tied to the map in this case I'd like to make the entire dashboard reflect my selection with just a quick selection my filter now applies everywhere in addition to interacting with the drop-down filters like this I can also use the worksheets themselves as filters for example I'd like to analyze the sales trends for a selection of the cities on the east now you can see how tableau is allowing me to analyze a sales costs and profits of these selected cities using traditional tools and methods this takes quite a bit of experienced programming to accomplish but here in a matter of minutes we've created an interactive sales analysis dashboard I've created a compelling interactive analysis that shows my findings now I need to put this somewhere where others can view it and interact with it and find their own insights I'm going to publish this the tableau server so that others can do just that I want everyone on the server to be able to see my analysis but I don't want to share everything though just the final dashboard I created this dashboard is now available for others to view in tableau server let's take a look at what this looks like in tableau server switching roles we can see how an end user would consume this same dashboard in a web browser I've already logged into tableau server and navigated to the project where I published this workbook as you can see it looks just like my dashboard I designed in tableau desktop even when I'm viewing it in a browser like this you can see how responsive and natural the experience is for me if I want to share my findings on this dashboard with my manager I can simply click the share button it get a link which I can email to her she can then click it and come straight here I can also use the embedding code to embed the dashboard into any portal imagine having an interactive dashboard like this one on the front page of your company intranet like we saw with Cornell something to keep in mind is that the results will change with time I want to keep up to date with the latest view of my data and a good way to do that is to subscribe to this dashboard I can elect to have a snapshot of this dashboard sent to my email inbox according to a regular schedule if I want to share this dashboard with someone who doesn't have access to tableau server I can easily export it in a variety of formats for example as an image file to embed in PowerPoint or as a PDF I've been using tableau desktop to do my analysis but any superstore employee with the appropriate permissions can customize my work to fit their needs and again depending on the superstore employee's permissions they can either save this over the original version that I built or just as a new version you've seen a lot in the last 30 minutes we started with some basic analysis and drilled down into problem areas then we showed the ability to do fast and easy time series analysis by year quarter month we brought the power of geographic analysis into a workbook with tableaus built-in understanding of location then we showed how without scripting or IT support you can blend together disparate data sources and showed how simple it can be to take a series of analyses and integrate them into a powerful story with a dashboard finally we showed how to publish and share everything with a wider audience we did all of this with no scripting nor IT support no macros like I've shown you today our customers understand the time savings power and power much better when they have done the evaluations themselves since you'll be doing the long-term work yourselves you can use our full-featured trial software with your own data in your own environment for a self reliant evaluation to validate then it will save you time and allow you to use your data in ways you've never been able to before thank you for joining me for this demo
